George Washington Monument Vandalized By Pro-Palestinian Protesters

In 2020, I wrote about the toppling of the monument to George Washington on the campus of George Washington University, where I teach. The university was silent on the vandalism by far left groups. Now, after George was restored, protesters have again vandalized the monument by spray painting pro-Palestinian slogans on its base. It is a continuation of property damage seen recently on Capitol Hill, including the defacing of the Columbus statue in front of Union Station as police watched. A pro-Palestinian group heralded the property damage on GW campus this week and pledged more such action until the university cuts ties with Israel.

The beheading of George in 2020 was quickly brushed aside and the university avoided direct criticism of the BLM protests, which resulted in property damage throughout the city.  That included efforts to topple historic monuments.

Last May, pro-Palestinian students not only occupied our University yard, but a street was cut off for weeks and the law school effectively locked down due to the encampment. (I could not drive to my office or go into the building without special permission). The protesters at one point called for the beheading of university officials, including the university president, in a mock trial.

After the most recent vandalism with the message “disclose divest now” in red spray paint, the Student Coalition for Palestine at GWU posted on Instagram a statement supporting the action:

Last night, autonomous protestors sent a message to Provost Christopher Alan Bracey at his home, spray painting the message amplified and repeated by students, faculty, and the people of this city onto Bracey’s very own driveway: “DISCLOSE DIVEST NOW!” During the encampment earlier this spring, Provost Bracey himself violently assaulted two students. A statue of George Washington on campus was also branded with the same demand.

Let this be a message to Bracey and every administrator at this University. We will never falter from our demands. This administration has the blood of 186,000 Palestinians on their hands. The burn of pepper spray, the bruises of police brutality, and the mark of handcuffs and zipties on our comrades are forever seared into our memory and consciousness. Your crimes will follow you wherever you go. You will be confronted in your events, in your offices, at your homes. Every step you take we will be there to hold you accountable.

The students allege that Provost Chris Bracey committed assault last April when he slapped a phone out of the hands of a protester who was filming him.

The continued vandalism on our campus is often defended as free speech. It is not. As I discuss in my book The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage,” there is a difference between conduct and speech. I have defended the right of pro-Palestinian groups to protest on campus. However, occupying buildings or trashing property is criminal conduct that should be sanctioned or prosecuted. The problem is that the few charges brought against such actors were largely dropped.

As students return, protests are again ramping up around our campus and other schools.

As for George, the monument will have to be, again, restored. It is all being heralded as “a message to Bracey and every administrator at this University.” The question is whether officials will be equally clear and consistent in their own message that threats, property damage, and other offenses will not be tolerated on our campuses.

    And by all accounts, he still wants one of some sort. A “weakened” Hamas sill in Gaza.

  4. It is in large part our fault that these sick-minded people (of any type, group or persuasion) continue to loot, vandalize, destroy, harm people and worse. Why is that? Because we are teaching them how to treat us. When we allow one person or an entire group to threaten others, destroy what doesn’t belong to them, and in many cases assault others…they learn quickly that we have no self-respect, we stand for nothing, and we are okay with being abused. As I think of it, the do-nothing approach has characteristics of those of a battered spouse. Only a fool or complete idiot believes that the best approach towards people that seek to harm us is to do nothing. Get a backbone, GWU!         I keep following polling crosstabs and The gains Trump has made should result in a landslide.

        Trump is winning almost every age cohort – even 18-29 is actually quite close – which you would not beleive from the media.
        I beleive Trump is losing in the 40-49 age cohort and it is closer than it ought to be over 60.

        Trump is near parity with hispanics – I beleive he is down by 2 – that is a MASSIVE gain.
        Trump is still at 39pts with black men – remember Obama took them by 95pts.
        Trump is way ahead of any other past republican with black women, but has lost alot of ground with Harris in the race.

        Harris has LOST blue collar votes compared to Biden.
        The only education level that Trump is losing is people with gradiuate degrees – where he is losing badly.
        He is way ahead with everyone without a college degree.
        He is ahead with white. He is ahead with married women. he appears to have a significant problem with single women in their 40s. I beleive he is behind with women overall – but NOT by alot. He is significantly ahead with men overall.

        Regardless the cross tab results DO NOT conform to the overall results.

      Rasmussen has been polling voter integrity for a long time. I beleive that constitently almost 1/3 of polled respondents admitted to voting in some way that was illegal in the past couple of election cycles.

      They are also asking about citizenship in their polling. About 3% of those polled say they are not citizens, and half of those say they have voted.

    3. My “guess” is that Biden dropping out resulted in a large portion of RFK voters that were NOT going to vote for Biden moving back to Harris. There was a precipitous drop in RFK support when Biden dropped out. Most of that Drop went to Harris.

      With RFK dropping out of Swing states and endorsing Trump – of those RFK voters NOT in swing states, some will stick to RFK, and the majority of the rest will move to Trump – as the ones that were likely to move to democrats already did when Biden dropped out.

      In swing states we will see a larger swing to Trump as those voters will not be able to remain with RFK.

      The RFK thing is complex.

      First – RFK was going to slowly lose voters to the democrats and Trump as the election neared. That is typical. Undecided and third party protest votes “come home” as the election nears.

      So some aspects of the RFK decision would have happened regardless.

      At the same time RFK has endorsed Trump. He is appearing at Trump Rallies. Both RFK and his VP Shanahan have mader it clear they are REALLY pissed at the lawfare by democrats that has made their lives H311. Even Jill Stein has chimed in and pissed on Democrat lawfare trying to keep her off the ballot.

      RFK adds another major voice to the Democratic party is a party of lawless thugs that will do anything to win – and that is especially important with him – as he is Democrat Royalty.

      The next big issue is it is clear that RFK Jr and Trump are seeking common ground.

      It only matters a little what that common ground is. The BIG deal from the perspective of Voters is that
      RFK and Trump are agreeing to disagree on some thing AND working together.

      There also appears to be some kind of agreement between Trump and RFK jr with respect to a role in the Trump administration.

      Even the perception of that is a big deal.

      Many of RFK jr.’s top issues are NOT Trump’s top issues. But they are also NOT issues were Trump is at odds with RFK jr.

      As an example RFK jr. is a conservationist and an environmentalist. But he is NOT among the marxists that have taken over the green movement as a means to backdoor socialism.

      RFK Jr. and Trump are both a thorn in the side of elitists. They are both a thorn in the side of NeoCons. They are both Free Speech advocates. They are both targets of democratic lawfare.

      And they are making an effort to work together and get along.

      It will be interesting to see if this Unity approach sticks. If they can keep from taking swings at each other over their differences.

      If they can do that that completely discredits one of the many idiotic democratic party claims.

      Democrats are the party of division – they are incapable of bringing the country together.
      Their idea of “unity” is you do what I want.

      RFK appears to personally want to burn FDA, NIH, CDC to the ground – while Trump has other targets – they BOTH have a shared desire to disempower particular parts of government.

      I personally have significant problems with RFK jr – and with Trump – but those problems pale in comparison to my problems with Democrats.

  7. Jonathan: When I was a young sophomore in high school another student stole a jacket from my school locker. It was not just ANY jacket. My father had it made special for me when I joined a school social club. That loss was PERSONAL to me. So when DJT steals the music of others for his own private gain I can emphasize.

    Yesterday, DJT had a rally in Glendale, AZ and used the opportunity to steal Foo Fighters song “My Hero” and played it while RFK, Jr. was called up on stage. For those who haven’t followed rock music the last twenty years the 1997 song was written and composed by Dave Grohl, the drummer for Nirvana. Many think the song was a tribute to Kurt Cobain who committed suicide. Not so. When Grohl performed “My Hero” on Howard Stern’s show he explained his composition was dedicated as a celebration of the “common man”–to “working class Democrats”. So for DJT to steal the song to introduce RFK, Jr., the least likely candidate to be a working class hero, is a slap in the face of Dave Grohl and the heroes he dedicated the song to.

    DJT has a long history of sealing other people’s music dating back to 2015. He has stolen the music of Isaac Hayes, Beyonce, Neil Young and other artists. When he gets the inevitable cease and desist order he simply moves on and steals the music of other artists.

    DJT is a thief and a con artist. He will take the last dollar from common ordinary citizens and put it into his own pocket. He has no shame. And he will steal the music of hard working artists to avoid paying royalties. It’s DJT’s MO–always has been and always will be!

      They sell the publishing rights to their music under cvontracts government by those cartel rules.

      Those rules allow ANYONE to play ANY musicians music in return for payment of royalties to the publisher and then the Musician.

      First – with extremely rare exceptions musicians do not own the publishing and use rights to their music – PUBLISHERS do.

      If you sell your car to your neighbor – you do not get to tell them who can drive the car in the future.

      If Trump was actually using music that he did not have the right to use – he would be sued for copyright violations.

      But that is not how this works. Trump like radio stations and TV shows and plays, and pretty much anyone is free to use whatever music they wish. Groups like the RIAA track their use, as well as the likely number of people that the performance was broadcast to, and the party who used the music gets billed for the use and their audience. They pay the bill and we move on.

      We have seen this nonsense outside of the context or Trump. Many artists sought to have their catalogs removed from streaming services like Spotify. Must learned they could not. A few like Neil young did have sufficient rights to restrict the use of their music, pulled the music and very shortly (and quietly) returned it – because their royalties tanked, because not only weren’t they getting played on Spotify – but their publishers were pissed and other broadcasters were pissed.

      Musicians – but even more important their publishers – the people whop FUND musicians, who pay the costs to produce and distribute their music make money when music is PLAYED. They very much DO NOT LIKE musicians trying to restrict the frequency with which their music is played.

      If you want your album produced and distributed. If you want the royalties that come from those albums and from songs being played on Radio or TV or in commercials – then you do not F#$K with the publishers.

      The distribution rights to Music are almost always THEIRS not the artists.

      In other news SCOTUS rejected the AZ AG’s claim that election officials did not have to enforce AZ law requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote. This is a US Supreme Court decision and it will apply in EVERY state where state law requires proof of citizenship to register.

      Many states have laws that REQUIRE purging voter registration roles of non citizens (and dead people, and fake people and people who move elsewhere and ….) this ruling likely applies to election officials in those states.

      With rare exceptions NO ONE needs the permission of an artist to use music that has been published.

      In the foo fighters instance that you cited – the foo fighters have stated publicly that any increase in their royalties as a result of Trump’s use of their music would be donated to Harris’s campaign.

      I know that critical thinking is difficult for you – but the Foo Fighters are donating royalities from trump because:

      Trump is paying the royalties he is legally required to in return for the use of the songs. And artists do NOT have the legal means to stop ANYONE from using their music.

      If you are a musician and you want to be able to pick and choose who can play your music – either Do not publish your music, publish it yourself, or negotiate a deal with music publishers that allows you to pick and choose who can play your music.

      See how many publishing companies will take you on if you decide that you want to be selective about who can play your music.

      Finnally with respect to the artists who claim that Trump’s use of their music is somehow inappropriate.
      Musicians control the words and music they write.

      But ultimately it is listeners who decide what the music means.

      The messages in alot of popular music resonates with Trump, Trump supporters, and fits well with Trump’s campaign.

      If Musicians did not want their music to be used by Trump to communicate a message that appealed to Trump and his supporters – they could have picked another message.

      Bruse Sporingsteen as an example has been saying in his music many of the things that Trump has adopted as policies.

      Springsteen May not like Trump – but specifically in his case – the Message Springsteen chose to put in his music and the message Trump has put into his politics
      ARE THE SAME.

      It is actually Springsteen that is not true to his music – Not Trump.

    So long as Democratic Party progressives continue trying to thread the needle both supporting Israel and giving America’s pro Hamas agitators appeasement and credibility by excusing their assaults on civil society, university campuses will continue to be besieged, their administrations intimidated, and their staffs and students harassed and even oppressed. The victimization of universities and their populations would begin to abate once the victimizers are marginalized in the press with the realization that America’s pro Hamas activists represent but a minority of all Palestinians. Let them wear themselves out peacefully protesting and demonstrating if they will but come down hard on them with the full effect of the law whenever they damage property and threaten people.

    2. Not to disagree with Khalil Shikaki’s work or your thoughtful comment, but your words and his polls only seem to underscore the dilemma for the Palestinian people. The polls cited in your referenced article seem to have been carried out mostly, if not totally, before the Hamas attack upon Israel. Can we just assume the sentiments expressed in those polls are unchanged?

      Assume those polls are true. That would imply that the Palestinian people have been nothing more than hostages to Hamas for nearly two decades. And the world stood by as this travesty of a Hamas government was maintained (not to even mention that the PA cancelled their last scheduled election in the West Bank because of fear of loss)? And now the same world that stood by and watched Palestinians be abused by Hamas rushes to support Hamas (the world is soliciting the approval of Hamas for a peace deal) via recognition and aid? Such a confusing picture suggests a near total misrepresentation of the situation…either through incompetence or intent. And clarification of such a situation is unlikely to be achieved through ‘polling’ of a people seemingly held hostage.

      It would seem that initial step toward clarification would be for the Democratic Party to underscore that which has already been declared: Hamas is a terrorist organization. As such, any individual or organization providing aid or assistance to Hamas should be so identified treated accordingly as a terrorist sympathizer. Until the Democratic Party clearly, openly and repeatedly makes such a declaration, the lines of distinction between the terrorist group Hamas and the Palestinian people will remain burred and you can expect impotent university leaders to embrace the ineffective policies of the US government.

    3. There is a crucial lesson Americans can learn from places like Gaza — don’t let militant zealots get anywhere near leadership positions. Better to place your trust in boring, non-charismatic professionals who are guided by common sense. Germany learned this the hard way in the ’30s. Russia, North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela….they all let leadership fall into the wrong hands. Gazans voted in Hamas in 2006.

      Zealots are easy to detect…they don’t take any responsibility for things going wrong, they take credit for other’s accomplishments, they use deceptive, emotion-laden infowarfare, and live in a fantasy-bubble of like-minded fanatics. They are paranoid, and misclassify neutrals as enemies.

The British mandate was divided by Britain into Jordan, with the rest left as a Jewish homeland, in part because the Jews were the indigenous people with a history of a nation-state.
