“Slitting the Master’s Throat”: Fired Machete-Wielding Professor Leads Protesters in Chilling Chant

We previously discussed Shellyne Rodríguez , the machete-wielding former Hunter College professor. Rodríguez is back with a large following shown in a video with protesters chanting with her about “slitting the throats of the masters.”We previously discussed a videotape of Rodríguez trashing a pro-life student display in New York. Before attacking the table, she told the students, “You’re not educating s–t […] This is f–king propaganda. What are you going to do, like, anti-trans next? This is bulls–t. This is violent. You’re triggering my students.”

The videotape revealed one other thing. At Hunter College, and at other colleges, it seems that trashing a pro-life student display and abusing pro-life students is not considered a firing offense. Hunter College refused to fire Rodríguez.

The PSC Graduate Center, the labor organization of graduate and professional schools at the City University of New York, supported that decision and said Rodríguez was “justified” in trashing the display, which the organization described as “dangerously false propaganda” and “disinformation.”

Rodríguez later put a machete to the neck of a reporter, threatened to chop him up and then chased a news crew down a street with the machete in hand. Somewhere between the machete to the neck and chasing the reporters down the street, Hunter College finally decided that Rodríguez had to go.

Rodríguez denounced the school for having “capitulated” to “racists, white nationalists, and misogynists.” She explained that her firing was just a continuation of “attacks on women, trans people, black people, Latinx people, migrants, and beyond.”

The Cooper Union, however, refused to sever ties with Rodríguez, 47, and decided that she should continue to teach her students. Later it too fired Rodriguez after continued radical conduct. However, according to the New York Post, Rodriguez attributed her firing to her anti-Israeli comments. She declared:

“Cooper Union has fired me because of a social media post I made about ‘Zionists’… effective immediately. This is fascism. Ya’ll are learning about it in real time. Stay strong, [stay] brave, stay defiant, don’t bite your tongue, and drink plenty of water! Pa-lante!”

Before watching this video, it is important to keep in mind that the faculty members and administrators previously wanted Rodríguez as a colleague.

In a video on X shared by journalist Andy Ngo, Rodríguez leads a group of pro-Palestinian protesters in chanting “Our ancestors … dreamed of us slitting the master’s throat.” The scene shows a clearly unhinged Rodríguez who is not just supported by these protesters but clearly thrilling them with her rage rhetoric.

I discuss Rodríguez in my book The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage” as an example of the radical chic in higher education.

Rodríguez leads the pro-Palestinian protesters in anti-police chants:

“Our ancestors are horrified to see black people, Latinx people, indigenous people, children of migrants, and Muslims joining the slave patrol NYPD and [inaudible] plantation overseers in the jails and prisons.”

For a person who chased reporters with a machete, it is a curious choice for a speaker against violence. However, Rodríguez is clearly revered by the crowd.

The fact that she pleaded guilty to harassment and menacing charges clearly did not reduce her popularity. To the contrary, for some, it may have increased it.

This was the person that two colleges wanted on their faculties and resisted efforts to fire her, even after trashing a table in an insane diatribe against pro-life advocates. She is the person that the PSC Graduate Center declared was “justified” in her violence against those peaceful advocates.

She is the very face of an age of rage.

Jonathan Turley is the Shapiro Professor of Public Interest Law at George Washington University. He is the author of “The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage” (Simon & Schuster).

    1. Tampon Tim
Do you stick them in your ears or are they for guys with leaking rears? Tell us Tim what use are these, shoved up the nose to prevent a sneeze?
I think you’re crazy as a loon and your running mate is quite a goon.

  1. Machetties should be banned as weapons of war. She has a right to say whatever she wants but if she comes after me with a machette she will find two 9mm slugs in her chest.

    1. “She has a right to say whatever she wants but if she comes after me with a machette she will find two 9mm slugs in her chest.”

.357 mag in my case, but same result…

    2. Two rounds only. Sounds like a sentence from a Sean Connery movie.

Seems it would be more gratifying to go with a mag dump from the knees to the liver.

      1. “Seems it would be more gratifying to go with a mag dump from the knees to the liver

Two rounds to mid-chest of hollow point (or something like Hornady Critical Defense where HP is frowned upon), in an effective caliber, from the range afforded by some fool wielding a machete to attack a competent defender, should more than suffice. If there were no witnesses, emptying a full mag might provide satisfaction. Otherwise, it could prompt questions from LEOs that might tempt an ambitious prosecutor to investigate whether the defender went beyond the bounds of justifiable self-defense by the applicable de facto standards. Those standards vary greatly from location to location. The truism that it would be better to be tried by twelve than carried by six remains absolutely true; OTOH it would generally seem to be a good idea to be aware of the point at which the threat is clearly neutralized, and try to refrain from going significantly beyond that point.

  2. * Thank you for the post and exposing Rodriquez. The “masters” are morality and laws.

Parents can be aware of such dangerous people in colleges and choose another school perhaps nearby without such danger.

  3. After her machete wielding incident, Rodriguez took a plea deal that had her misdemeanor menacing charge withdrawn after she completed six months of behavioral therapy. Obviously, the therapy was of no consequence. No surprise. It’s what to be expected of an acclaimed Marxist and a cutthroat terrorist.

  4. . . .it is a curious choice for a speaker against violence.

She’s not “against violence.” She’s for violence. That comes through loud and clear in both her words and her actions. Perhaps she’d rather not be on the receiving end of violence, but who would? There are plenty of very violent people who do not want that, and she is one of them.

More broadly, the modern Left has absurdly reduced itself to a parody of its former self. Today, it favors practically nothing but violence. They do not articulate any rational arguments, they only gaslight the public, lie to the public, and name-call. President Biden says we must put Trump in a “bullseye,” the corporate media purposefully tries to promote assassination attempts through falsely repeating ad nauseum that Trump is a threat to civilization and Trump = Hitler. Their dutiful minions on the street respond by taking up arms to try and physically shoot him to death. Then, people like this demonized left-wing former professor trash peaceful displays and call for the slitting of throats. The Democrat party of JFK is gone; today it is spiritually desolate, the haunt of jackals and demons.

    1. old man, JT was pointing out the irony of her accusing the pro-life students with, “What are you going to do, like, anti-trans next? This is bulls–t. This is violent. You’re triggering my students.”

    2. OldManFromKS,
Just recently a man was arrested from Idaho for making nine calls to Mar-a-Lago, threatening to kill Trump.
“I start driving to the home of this multi person rapist PIG TRUMP to take him down single combat,” one post from July 31 allegedly read.
Pig Trump. Rapist. Why does that sound familiar? What other delusional person do we know who uses similar language? 😉

  5. Are we re-living ancient times, or a modern-day version of Pandora’s Box? The lid must have popped a crack judging by mayhem rousting about in America. If our modern-day Pandora does open the lid, curses will spread throughout, when the lid closes as it will, Hope will be lost.

  6. Jonathan: Does the Shellyne Rodriguez incident prove there “radical chic in higher education”?. I don’t think so. Context is always important in evaluating this case.

The first incident (5/2/23) involved Rodriguez confronting a “Students for Life” anti-abortion group at Hunter College, using profanity and tossing postcards and a contain of rubber fetuses. After that incident the right-wing media, Fox News and Breitbart along with the tabloid NY post, owned by Rupert Murdock, picked up on the story. The Post published an hyperbolic editorial declaring: “Hunter College freakout proves left loves violence and hate speech”.

Then there was the follow up incident at Rodriguez’s apartment in the Bronx involving the machete. The Post sent a reporter, Reuven Fenton, to interview Rodriguez. Art News reported (5/24/23): “A spokesperson for Rodriguez said that Fenton and a cameraman did not identify themselves and ‘did not use the intercom to gain access, and appear have been trespassing inside the building when they pounded on her door and started yelling at her through the door'”. That’s when Rodriguez apparently confronted Fenton with a machete. As a result of this incident Rodriguez agreed to plead guilty to various charges and enter therapy and Hunter College fired her.

Rodriguez obviously has issues. You don’t confront and threaten a reporter with a machete. But Rodriguez, a Black/Latina gay woman, made a salient point about her situation: “As much as this incident has stakes for my life, it is ultimately just part of as broader political struggle taking place across the country. right wing media organizations are weaponizing and sensationalizing this case to further their agenda, and using me a a prism through which to project their attacks on women, trans people, black people, Latinx people, migrants, and beyond”.

So why would you pick up the Rodriguez story from the right-wing media and tabloids like the NY Post and also run with it–not only in your new book but in your column? Rodriguez is an easy target. But her case is only one isolated incident that does not support your claim she is the “face of an age of rage”–advocating violence. . Rather, her case gives the right wing a cause to attack people of color, the LGBTQ+ and women’s rights. It looks like you have joined that crowd!

    1. Dennis says, “But Rodriguez, a Black/Latina gay woman….”

      Maybe she’ll vote three times?
No. make that 4-she’s a woman. Checked all the right boxes.

        1. She will register once as “Shaya Destiny Rhondo,” once as “Sylvia Santiago Rodriquez,” once as “Divine Renee” and once as “Sheila Rodham.”

    2. Bombshell transcripts: Trump urged use of troops to protect Capitol on Jan. 6 , but was rebuffed
Key lawmaker says interviews prove Pentagon wrongly allowed optics to overwhelm security concerns in lead-up to fateful day. The Pentagon’s top brass did not comply with Trump’s orders because of political concerns and “optics.”
      https://justthenews.com/accountability/watchdogs/bombshell-transcripts-trump-urged-use-troops-protect-capitol-jan-6-was

      1. ” Trump urged use of troops to protect Capitol on Jan. 6 , but was rebuffed”

Saw that. Wonder why that took this long to come out.

    3. Everyone lighten up a little on Dennis. He may well be a fervent leftist extremist, but there is still hope for him having recognized that “Rodriguez obviously has issues.” It’s an understatement for sure but nevertheless a correct one as well.

      1. “having recognized that “Rodriguez obviously has issues.” ”

I think that was just an “it takes one to know one” moment.

    4. Dennis, the “community work” specified in your work release program for sexual interference with children didn’t mean these meandering posts here. They had scrubbing graffiti off public buildings or something similar in mind.

  7. Oddly enough I do not have a problem with her rhetoric. Professor Rodriguez has right to her rants as much as anyone. Yet, she plays a dangerous game and may bet bitten in the end. What happens if she raises the machete to the wrong guy and gets chopped up herself as a self-defense move? I bet she screams loudly. I have noticed the most aggrieved seem to be the ones that do not believe others cannot be aggrieved through their actions.

I do take to heart she will pass too because the radicals get ignored by the young as they grow up.

    1. You don’t have a problem because you are older and more mature. I would guess 45-59 range? But look at the video.
She is not attracting an audience of older, wiser, more mature persons who will smile and keep walking. She is inspiring the Ohio State, Columbia State alumni types

  8. Dear Professor, I am wondering why on earth this person is not sitting in jail for her attack on the reporter and his crew? Or why wasn’t she dismissed immediately for her assault on the Pro-life students. Acting out in an aggressive and physical manner was wrong. The people writing here giving her a pass are hypocrites of the highest order. They will rail and complain about Republicans and Mr. Trump, however, they are unwilling to rightly judge what happened here in both instances.

    1. That “attack” was not an attack according to NY law. Brandishing her machete was deemed misdemeanor menacing in NY. Of course that would be according to the totallity of the circumstances.

She did not assault the pro-life students. She never touched them. What she did amounted to harrassment which is not considered a crime in NY.

§ 120.15 Menacing in the third degree.

A person is guilty of menacing in the third degree when, by physical
menace, he or she intentionally places or attempts to place another
person in fear of death, imminent serious physical injury or physical
      injury.

Menacing in the third degree is a class B misdemeanor.

She was charged and went to court over it. She made a plea deal and the charge was withdrawn, but she was required to attend six months of behavior therapy. Which seems like it’s just anger management classes.

  9. Fighting for freedom is a bad investment? Republicans have become stupid. Trump mocking Zelensky for requesting assistance is like mocking Benjamin Franklin for requesting assistance from the French. It’s not salesmanship. He’s not a car dealer. It’s for something noble, but Trump wouldn’t know anything about that.

  10. An oft-repeated legal phrase: “With the benefit comes the burden.” (i.e., the benefit and burden principle)

““Our ancestors … dreamed of us slitting the master’s throat,” she exhorts the crowd.
Rodriguez wants and demands the benefit of free speech protections afforded her to spew her ugly rhetoric,
-but does she accept and assume the burden of responsibility for any untoward or violent consequences that she blatantly inspires?

    1. Lin,
That would suggest a sense of responsibility. Not a common trait leftist Democrats have. Just look at all the calls for violence against Trump resulting in two assassination attempts and one offering up a bounty if he failed in his attempt. Yet, Democrats doubled down on violent rhetoric after the second attempt.
Now, will they continue the Jan 6th insurrection rhetoric after the recent bombshell report with transcripts that Trump ordered for tighter security at the Capitol on that day?

    2. In reality, you are likely aware, or at least have some understanding of what she was talking about.

Using rhetoric alone is not enough to conclude that her intentions should be taken seriously. Turley consistently defends similar rhetoric from Trump and his supporters. Why should this be any different? She might inspire someone, or she might not. That’s just the nature of exercising free speech, according to Turley.

      1. “similar rhetoric from Trump”
Yup, now that you mention it, I do recall Trump “exhorting” the crowd to slit the throats of those illegal immigrants! He even urged the crowd to slit the throats of those electoral congressional rascals on Jan 6!
Now that I think of it, didn’t Trump suggest that his supporters should go out and slit the throats of all those who spread lies, rumors, and false propaganda about him. Thanks for reminding us of this, buddy!

  11. Turley is quick to criticize Professor Rodriquez for what he perceives as lenient punishment, conveniently overlooking the fact that she was indeed held accountable under the law. She faced charges and entered a plea deal, which allowed for the withdrawal of charges in exchange for six months of behavioral therapy. Clearly, her legal representation was effective.

Upon fulfilling her obligations, she resumed her activist activities, which included expressing her strong opinions and engaging in incendiary rhetoric – all well within her legal rights.

Turley’s stance seems to align with right-leaning narratives, evident from the attention-grabbing headline “Slitting the Master’s Throat”: Fired Machete-wielding professor leads protesters in Chilling chant.” This headline, infused with rage-inciting language, seems tailored to resonate with right-leaning and MAGA readers. The article, offering only a partial story, further perpetuates the “age of rage” that Turley claims to decry, underscoring the irony of him contributing to the very issue he condemns.

    1. Sad that communist leftos spend their time maligning our greatest legal minds. Very hard these days to publish, be heard and have a civil discussion of the issues

  12. Dear Mr. Turley, I am sorry that your time was wasted on such a foul person as this “professor”. Please don’t waste anymore time on her. She is only a sad product of the Left-wing media and the Democratic party. Sad!!

    1. He needs the attention and keeps his MAGA readers satiated with rage. That was the point of the articel.

      1. Dennis, George, and Gigi all suffer from the same malady. Pretending to have authority and knowledge to condescendingly lecture us, while getting all their information from Wikipedia and the media.
(Gigi only differs because she resorts to female hysteric rage and flinging personal insults, while George assumes the air of diagnosing everyone with reading comprehension and context problems (even though he repeated his latest learning experience from Wiki by accusing some commenters of suffering from “Kruger-Dunning” syndrome–even though it’s really “Dunning-Kruger.” These three, what works of art!

  13. Actually, she’s got nothing on you as you shill for your magat base, Turls. Maybe bring a machete next time the R’s hire you out to testify like you’re an expert witness before Comer and Gymmy Jodan.

    1. Re: “Actually, she’s got nothing on you as you shill for your magat base, Turls…”

Sorry about your brain damage. Really…

  14. I don’t agree professor. There is rage and then there is insanity. She is clearly unhinged.

  15. “slitting the throats of the masters.”

Oh what horrors. And we have a person running for President that says Haitian Immigrants are eating your pets. And the idiot MAGA crowd takes up the cause and threatens Haitians everywhere.

Yes indeed, be fearful of those immigrants. Fear is an effective weapon of the idiot crowd.

Get out of your MAGA cult now before your cult leader loses the election and hides in his bathroom with his classified documents in his mar a logo playground. Fear not, maybe you can snag his wife as she will likely be no where near the loser in his bathroom.

    1. Get a grip. Let’s talk about the idiots who think (I use the word loosely) that equality of opportunity equals equality of outcome and that trillions in debt are not crippling the nation. Or the fools who believe bringing in millions of immigrants illegally is good for the economy and doesn’t cost tax payers a dime. Did you hold Biden in contempt for having classified documents in his garage? Hypocrite, thy name in ‘Liberal/Progressive’

  16. The only logical explanation that I can conjure for people such as this pile of vitriol is that they are full of hate for this nation yet they do not leave; and it is as if they are part of an external army of America-haters whose sole purpose is to destroy this nation from within. Why are ewe not using legislation dealing with treason and sedition to expel these bags of hate out of our nation? The exit door is never locked…

    1. Why are ewe not using legislation dealing with treason and sedition to expel these bags of hate out of our nation?

So glad someone else agrees with me that trump and his ilk should be convicted of treason. I’m not sure about the punishment of hanging, but spending the rest of their lives in prison? Fine by me.

      1. Bombshell transcripts: Trump urged use of troops to protect Capitol on Jan. 6 , but was rebuffed

        1. I looked at this. IT SHOULD BE FRONT PAGE NEWS ACROSS AMERICA. That will never happen, and I doubt anyone even mentions it, except maybe Sean Hannity. Then it will get dismissed as “right wing conspiracy theory.”

      2. for one reason – Trump and his followers are not shouting “death to America” – that’s why

    2. ” they are full of hate for this nation yet they do not leave”

Hey, Alec Baldwin and Babs Streisand need someone to channel…

    3. There is no such legislation. This is America, where we have the freedom of speech. If we had laws banning such speech we would not be America and we would deserve to be destroyed.
