“I Will Follow the Law”: Harris Adopts a Purely Pedestrian View of the Presidency in Fox Interview

Bret Baier/X

Last night, millions tuned in to watch Fox’s Bret Baier interview Vice President Kamala Harris in a brief but substantive exchange. One of the most interesting aspects of the interview was the purely pedestrian view of the presidency that Harris presented in the interview. Harris repeatedly responded with “I will follow the law” while refusing to say where she personally stands on immigration, transgender athletes, and other issues.

After confining interviews to largely softball forums like The View, Harris faced a serious journalist who pushed for actual answers on policies. While confined to a short time by the Harris campaign, Baier kept pulling Harris back to these questions to cut off the evasions that have characterized past interviews.

Baier noted that she has previously campaigned on some of these issues and publicly declared that she worked for such things as gender transitioning operations for undocumented persons. Harris now refuses to state her position on such issues and says “I will follow the law.”

Yet, Harris is not adopting that pedestrian model in other areas like abortion rights where she is pledging to use executive powers to resist pro-life laws. The Biden-Harris Administration has used such orders to negate both constitutional and statutory authority. That includes orders that were declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court on issues like the national eviction moratorium.

Notably, Harris did flip her position on decriminalizing unlawful entries. Despite running on that pledge in her earlier unsuccessful run for the White House, Harris now says that she is against such decriminalization. As with her past opposition to fracking and gun rights, the change is likely to draw criticism that Harris is adopting a new persona for a close race.

The refusal to give her position on these issues is reminiscent of Joe Biden’s last campaign where he simply refused to say if he opposed packing the Supreme Court with an instant liberal majority. What is different is that Harris previously stated strong and public positions on these questions but is now refusing to confirm that she continues to support those policies, including some that rank near the top of issues for voters.

Baier did a heroic job in trying to prevent the filibustering of the interview and push for answers on these questions. It was the first such interview where Harris faced a dogged interviewer. Given the frantic effort of the staff to end the interview (after showing up late), it is likely to be the last.

The mantra of “I will follow the law” ignores that a president plays a major role in the legislative process and has considerable executive powers in determining how such laws are enforced. The presidency is more than a promise of “joy” and compliance. It is about leadership on issues that matter to voters.

The interview had a seasonal feel with Halloween approaching like a political reading of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven where every question is answered by “Nevermore.”

That could well be the theme of the Harris campaign. When pressed on contradictions or controversies, Harris seemed to declare “Nevermore Trump” over and over again. We will see if that is enough in a matter of a few weeks.

In the meantime, real journalists will be left seeking answers that never come, exclaiming like Poe’s protagonist “tell me—tell me, I implore!” However, “Quoth the [Harris] ‘Nevermore.’”

  1. To address the ‘I will follow the Law’ comment:
given the law-following done in New York & Georgia by Democrat affiliates, this is what that would look like. Please refer to the infamous ‘punishment quote’ made by Harris.

  2. Good Post Jonathan

“… Harris repeatedly responded with “I will follow the law” while refusing to say where she personally stands on immigration, transgender athletes, and other issues. …”

She is on ‘Auto Pilot’, along for the free-ride just like Joe [I wonder what Her cut will be? (10,15, 20% ???) She’s Joe 2.0] Four more years of ‘Let Them Eat Cake’,’As Long As I get My Cut!’

Network Hypnosis and UniParty-Election shenanigans and VOILA! – The Deep State Owns You and We’re marching off to W.W.III

Calling this ‘U.S. Democracy’, is a mockery of our Imperial Empire.

  3. Her staff needed to keep the interview as short as possible because they didn’t want Brett to broach any more topics. On every each except abortion Harris is on the wrong side of the vast American people. By arriving late, having Harris filibuster each question and ending the interview early they managed to only have to reply to maybe 4 topics as such items as FRACKING in PA, her support for BLM rioters, her plagiarism, her support for free everything for illegals and her husbands alleged assault of a female lawyer were never discussed.

Of all the aggravating hypocritical positions of the Democrats and the media the one that is driving me up a wall right now is the DEMAND for health records for Trump and the claim that he is old and unfit. It reminds me of an old adage, shamelessness is a political superpower.

  4. This is the fifth or sixth account I have read of this interview, and it noticeably goes into far less detail, and is far less critical of Harris, than any of the others. I wonder why?

  5. Turley is being disingenuous again. Harris was not avoiding her positions. Baire kept interrupting her purposefully to avoid letting her say things Fox News did not want her to say to Fox viewers. The interview was short because Harris arrived 15 minutes late, not because her “handlers wanted to wrap it up.” Every interview has time constraints.

What Turley does not mention is that Harris was actually answering questions even if some were being cut off by Baier’s constant interruptions. She was far better than Trump’s disaster at the Univision town hall meeting. He did not anwer a single question and he rambled on as usual.

    1. My dog ate my homework…
Baier didn’t interrupt her, he did this thing that hasn’t been done so far. It’s called an interview with specific questions and answers.

It was another Trump ad without editing!

  6. Kamala insulted the American people in that interview.

I guess it was Kamala’s way of say “pass the bill if you want to find out what is in it”.

“vote for me and if elected you will find out what my positions are”…

That may be the what the Dems do in Congress but I don’t want that in the Presidency, no thanks

  7. A fourth term of the Obacula administration, correction I mean a second term of Harris would end the Republic. After last evening’s interview I doubt she’ll turn up on any program again that will ask substantive questions. I’m starting to believe her handler’s aren’t as confident and joyful as they were. It seems their new answer for all questions are “Trump is unhinged” and “he won’t show his health records”. It should be interesting how the msm spins the interview.

    1. * Obacula …

It’s just government by drug cartels robbing the poor as easy marks. There isn’t some grand Marxist scheme other than robbery and depravity committed by common criminals. She’s simply a gangster taking her cut.

      1. * She was late . It was scheduled for an hour. She cut it to 30 minutes and then again, 20 minutes. A common 5th grader ploy to assert herself as I control the time, I control you Bret Baier, I control your audience with my haughty contempt and disdain and I’m here to destroy you and this ugly nation. Arrogance strutting itself naked and your nakedness is covered with swindled gold threads.

Go back back and do your joyful interview with Charlemagne Tha god, whomever that is–>A drug dealer. It’s where she belongs.

God got your number and you ain’t foolin no one.

  8. “Bret Baier interview Vice President Kamala Harris”

Two of her repulsive traits were solidified in that interview:

She has mastered the dark art of using lots of words, while saying nothing.

She is chronically evasive and intellectually dishonest — as witnessed by her nasty habit of aggressively changing the topic.

    1. The problem for her is that if she actually said what she believes and what she would propose to do if President she will lose votes, because her DEI progressive agenda is unpopular. And the Republicans who support her are mainly neocons, whose foreign policy agenda is also unpopular. So she has to say nothing and scream about Trump. Fortunately, she is gradually being exposed for what she is.

  9. question…what is she doing for the border RIGHT NOW?
Democrats are importing illegals equivalent of 1% of the US population per year.
They are USING THEM to win congressional seats and elections….THIS IS OPEN TREASON and Sedition.
We need to destroy the Democrat Party!

  10. so NOW she is going to follow the law?

Democrats have IGNORED laws on a stunning scale since Obama!
I want Democrats criminals jailed by the 1000’s for
persecution of Trump and his people
Protecting Bidens and Democrats committing CRIMES
    Help illegals
    forced sex change of minors!

yes BY THE 1000’s. They want to persecute Republicans…well RIGHT BACK AT YOU!
It is CLEAR Democrats are fighting a Civil War to Destroy the WEST!

      1. Send yours and we’ll provide more blood thinners so Kamala continues to bleed to death! The interview was another disaster, first time she’s been pressed for an answer and as expected she hasn’t one!

  11. It is frightening to think she would be president. I cannot imagine a serious discussion with foreign leaders or in times of crisis. She “wants Republicans in her circle” and she choses R’s that most R’s disrespect! Idiot.

  12. I have been undecided until this interview as I think both of them are greatly flawed. At least Trump tells and mostly defends his policies, right or wrong. Harris doesn’t which is scary to this voter.

  13. Harris is a Puppet for the Elites, Neocons, Radical Left Bernie Sanders/Soros crowd. She tried filibuster any and all questions and as a good Puppet its all Trumps fault. It got so bad her staff forced Bret to end the interview early. She is an empty vessel serving as a figurehead for the Puppet Masters.

  14. Reminds me of the movie Dr. Moreau’s Island, “What is the law?” In a way it’s a good parallel of what the Democrats and their WOKE BS have done to our Nation.

    She can NEVER be President.

    1. With her talking over and screeching, it is easy to see why she goes through staff. God forbid you present her with a counter argument on a topic.
