Yale Psychiatrist: Harris Voters May Need to Cut Off Friends and Family Members

With women pledging to break up with their boyfriends and divorce their husbands over the Trump victory, Yale University chief psychiatry resident Dr. Amanda Calhoun is advising that it may also be necessary for your mental health to cut off your family and friends who supported Trump. In that way, you can avoid being “triggered” by opposing political views — much like Yale itself.

As academics, we are dealing with the election on campuses across America. After the election, I had some valuable discussions with students who supported Harris and some who supported Trump. I wish there would be more interaction between the two groups. That is why this story stood out for me. I do not believe that further separation or isolation will help this country or these individuals.

Dr. Calhoun went on MSNBC’s Joy Reid to offer the curious take on good mental health. Reid has spent the week condemning the majority of voters (particularly minority voters) in the nation as racists and misogynists for the Trump victory.

Reid joined a rising tide of rage, which I discussed in my column this weekend. Dr. Calhoun added her voice to the madness.

“So, if you are going into a situation where you have family members, where you have close friends who you know have voted in ways that are against you… it’s completely fine to not be around those people and to tell them why…

…You know, to say, ‘I have a problem with the way that you voted because it went against my very livelihood, and I’m not going to be around you this holiday. I need to take some space for me.’ I think you should very much be entitled to do so, and I think it may be essential for your mental health.”

There is another possibility. You can try to resolve those feelings with people who you previously liked or loved. It may actually help to discuss these issues outside of the echo chamber of your political associations.

Of course, Yale University itself has followed this advice for years by removing faculty with opposing views for the general welfare of the community. Surveys show that 77% of Yale faculty “are registered as Democrats or have conducted political activity that heavily or exclusively supports Democrats; under 3% are Republican.” Furthermore, among 16 surveyed departments, “over 57%, have no registered Republicans at all. Across 14 departments in the Social Sciences and Humanities, the report identified 312 Democrat faculty (88%) and only 4 Republicans (1.1%), a ratio of around 78 to 1.”

Now, that is mental tranquility.

The suggestion that it may be “triggering” to see family and friends is not unique to Yale’s psychiatric staff.

Across the country, women have been cutting their hair and joining the Korean 4B movement—bihon (no marriage), bichulsan (no childbirth), biyeonae (no dating), and bisekseu (no sex). One is quoted as saying, “I fear The Handmaid’s Tale will become our reality.”

It is a curious response since figures like Reid blame white women for the loss. Trump won white women voters by eight points at 53 percent. Harris actually fell slightly in the support of women overall. Conversely, roughly 43 percent of men voted for Harris. Forty percent of women under 30 voted for Trump.

Yet I watched one deranged voter say that she is thinking of buying a “Glock” and shooting the first man who comes near her. If so, she would have an over 4 out of 10 likelihood of shooting a fellow Harris supporter.

None of this is good for our nation’s mental health and suggesting that people retreat further into their silos does not make for particularly healthy advice.

As discussed in my book, The Indispensable Right, we have become a nation of rage addicts. Taking another hit of rage will do little to break that addiction.

Jonathan Turley is the Shapiro Professor of Public Interest Law at George Washington University. He is the author of “The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage” (Simon & Schuster, 2024).

  1. If you understand how psyops works, then this result is the expected outcome. This was a coordinated strategy to manipulate target audiences (TA) to act in a particular way. In this case, to vote for Harris and Democrats because if not, the following will happen:

    – threat to our democracy
    – Trump is Hitler
    – Trump is a fascist
    – his supporters are nazis
    – he will put you in camps
    – he will take away your abortion rights

The psyops worked, but not widely enough. The problem is the affected TA’s haven’t gone anywhere. On top of that, their condtioned worse-case scenario has now been realized.

We are unfortunately going to have this “insanity” with us for awhile. Especially if the media outlets used in this campaign continue their operations.

    1. * Thank you, Olly.

The only things known are those things you’ve seen right now. A woman you knew was stabbed 50x at the car wash is true. A home broken into and trashed is true. People run over by cars is true etc.

Being a human being is a choice. It’s an act of will. Morality is an act of will. The rest are animals by lack of will. It’s that simple.

Political systems are acts of will. The system provides opportunities to be a human being. If not it is not moral.

The fake psyop shrink advises isolation which is a cult characteristic.

At holiday gatherings religion and politics are not discussed as a matter of courtesy.

      Done

  2. Reply to Blackbeard: EXACTLY! The hard Left has far too few children to replace themselves, and are operating an extinction strategy. Their only chance of group survival is what they are doing now, having burrowed their way into the Education system. Co-opting the children of “normals” (spectrum from Classical Liberals to Conservarive) is their only play.

Conservatives, especially, took their eyes off the ball regarding education. Covid made parents take a hard look at what was being taught, and that is forcing change in primary and high school curriculums. It will likely also change the willingness of parents to pay for their children to get brainwashed in Universities like Yale.

  3. Good riddance!! Already got left behind by angry Hillary voters, so there aren’t many left to hate on me.

  4. Who knew we could end abortions with unstable, angry women pledging to join the 4B movement and stop having sex?

    1. Psychologically speaking, promoting family and friend cut offs is extremely damaging. It is malpractice for a Physician to advise such a horrific action. I have spent much of my adult life reconnecting families that had experienced cut offs with a member over race, drug use, or sex. Cut offs can damage multiple generations of a family.
I would only suggest such a thing if abuse was involved.
With abusive people like this it is no wonder that our nation’s mental health is spiraling out of control.

        1. Faux or serious attempts? Unserious attempts are well-known tactics to get attention and acquiescence. Actual success would seem to be a quite poor strategy to achieve one’s goals…

          1. “Faux or serious attempts?”

That is a great point. And it explains something that has long baffled me.

After witnessing numerous, failed suicide attempts, I wondered: Is the person really that inept?

But you’re right. That ineptness was a feature, not a bug. The person’s actual motivation was a pathological need for attention.

            Thank you.

          2. Serious attempts. Though actual success would seem to be a quite poor strategy to achieve one’s goals,” we are not talking about people who are presently stable.

    2. Those ugly ass beotches arent having sex anyway.

Just like the fat neurotic lesbians protesting the loudest on abortion.

  5. What a stunning display of the narrow-minded intolerance that is dividing the country. No doubt she believes in diversity where race, gender and sexual orientation are concerned – just not in political opinion. Of course, an open mind that listens to both sides and forms its own opinion cannot be brainwashed — a threat to both extremes.

  6. How sweet the tears of these idiots are. Goodbye and don’t let the door knob hit ya, Canada wants you! Any sel respecting man wouldn’t have anything to do with them anyway! Liberal women don’t normally like men anyway, it’s a win win!

    1. Why isn’t julia roberts pontificating on the ried hate forum? They both hate white men.

    2. Goodbye and don’t let the door knob hit ya, Canada wants you!

You post that like it’s your way of proclaiming all you know about our neighbor Canada is the stereotype Canada.

  7. I had a dream yesterday that I got a call from Don. Don was a childhood friend. He committed suicide as a teenager. In the dream on the ‘phone he asked me how I was doing, myself, and my folks. I told him mom, dad and my sister were watching TV in the other room. I wanted to tell him how I felt, but for some reason I was on an old-fashioned telephone with a very long extension cord, and it was tangled, and I had to pull on it and we got disconnected. Then I woke up.

  8. Actually, Plan 4B is a 3-D anti-abortion chess move. Well played, I say.

If someone wants to go pout in the corner about the election and boycott Thanksgiving, well, they’re adults, they can do what they want. No doubt if they didn’t have a melt-down over the election before the pumpkin pie was served, they’d find something else to get upset about. Best to let them stay home and feed their cats.

  9. It would appear that we have seen the last of Svelaz-George.

He hasn’t made an appearance here since the election.

Small doubt that he was an election year plant.

I will miss rubbing his nose in his own doo doo.

  10. “may also be necessary for your mental health to cut off your family and friends who supported Trump”

Would this include all monetary support, food, clothing, vehicles and living within their homes? Let’s see how long that lasts? Is this wingnut going to care for these mentally weak children?

  11. MSNBC TWO NUT CASES Reid & so Called Shrink from Elite Yale, two Jokers, both of them need a Shrink. The Left Wing Radicals/Elite, DEMS, Main Street Media world ended on Nov 5th. with Trump’s mandate. Their world was shattered, They will resist but, in the end, like Trump did on Nove 5th he will win.

  12. As a resident, she is not a psychiatrist. She is training to become a psychiatrist. She may or may not be currently licensed to practice medicine. Doesn’t excuse her from encouraging folks suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome (such as Joy Reid) to act even crazier.

    1. Here we have another ill-informed comment from a low information MAGA loyalist.

      She is the Chief Resident.
She completed her residency in June 2023.
As in most residency programs, the best resident in the final year is invited back to serve as Chief Resident for the following year, supervising the training of upcoming residents.
She is appointed as a Clinical Fellow at Yale.
She is a fully licensed, fully trained psychiatrist.

      1. She is also a fool and a clown and an inexperienced moron in both her career and her life – this happens with young docs as they devote so much time to their profession and have so little for other things – like reality.

The fact she is the “best resident” is the most alarming aspect of any of this. She is an excellent regurgitator.

        1. Residency training involves clinical treatment of actual patients in the real world.
Residents are assessed by their ability to treat real patients.
“Regurgitation” of facts is not something that is considered in assessment.
The “best” resident is the one who clearly demonstrates the best ability to assess and treat patients in the “real world”.

Of course if you did not graduate from high school you can have no knowledge of these matters.

  13. Unfortunately, the Harris Despondent Crew see themselves as mentally fit and the rest of us as mentally unstable or intellectually inferior. Thus it is unlikely the HDC will seek help that mitigates their Trump Derangement Syndrome! Going to Yaley type psychiatrists for treatment only reinforces HDC disfunction with even more outrageous behavior on the horizon! The old adage – you can’t fix stupid – definitely applies to these folks!!

  14. I had to check to make sure this was not the Babylon Bee. Therapists in deep blue cities are going to get rich.

  15. The Democrats proudly claim that college educated folks voted in favor of Harris. They think this implies that the intelligent voted for Harris. So far no one has intimated or even outrightly expressed that most of those college educated types enjoy the Biden college loan forgiveness programs. (Bribes?)

In your article, you correctly observe that also the college educated have been indoctrinated by the professors. Being indoctrinated does not imply a higher intelligence. We have millions of Manchurian Candidates who have been programmed to believe what they’ve been told. (Islamic Madrasas Schools?)

  16. These folks are lucky that Trump won. He has pledged to get mentally ill people the help they need.

The old cliche is that the future belongs to those that have babies. Apparently the problem of the Left is going to solve itself.

    1. The ProgLibs had a rehearsal on this — Covid. I have liberal family members who cut me off because 1) I refused to wear a mask; 2)I refused a vaccine that had only been tested 4 months with a compromised control group; 3)refused to cancel my wedding (btw, no one got sick and everyone had a fabulous time).

    2. Promoting and celebrating homosexuality, trans-whateverism, and unfettered abortion leads to a population unable to replace itself. Destigmatizing drug use, presumably, leads to a greater number of people unable to lead productive lives. If you are unable to govern your own life, you become less desirable as sexual partner for parenthood.
