Yale Psychiatrist: Harris Voters May Need to Cut Off Friends and Family Members

With women pledging to break up with their boyfriends and divorce their husbands over the Trump victory, Yale University chief psychiatry resident Dr. Amanda Calhoun is advising that it may also be necessary for your mental health to cut off your family and friends who supported Trump. In that way, you can avoid being “triggered” by opposing political views — much like Yale itself.

As academics, we are dealing with the election on campuses across America. After the election, I had some valuable discussions with students who supported Harris and some who supported Trump. I wish there would be more interaction between the two groups. That is why this story stood out for me. I do not believe that further separation or isolation will help this country or these individuals.

Dr. Calhoun went on MSNBC’s Joy Reid to offer the curious take on good mental health. Reid has spent the week condemning the majority of voters (particularly minority voters) in the nation as racists and misogynists for the Trump victory.

Reid joined a rising tide of rage, which I discussed in my column this weekend. Dr. Calhoun added her voice to the madness.

“So, if you are going into a situation where you have family members, where you have close friends who you know have voted in ways that are against you… it’s completely fine to not be around those people and to tell them why…

…You know, to say, ‘I have a problem with the way that you voted because it went against my very livelihood, and I’m not going to be around you this holiday. I need to take some space for me.’ I think you should very much be entitled to do so, and I think it may be essential for your mental health.”

There is another possibility. You can try to resolve those feelings with people who you previously liked or loved. It may actually help to discuss these issues outside of the echo chamber of your political associations.

Of course, Yale University itself has followed this advice for years by removing faculty with opposing views for the general welfare of the community. Surveys show that 77% of Yale faculty “are registered as Democrats or have conducted political activity that heavily or exclusively supports Democrats; under 3% are Republican.” Furthermore, among 16 surveyed departments, “over 57%, have no registered Republicans at all. Across 14 departments in the Social Sciences and Humanities, the report identified 312 Democrat faculty (88%) and only 4 Republicans (1.1%), a ratio of around 78 to 1.”

Now, that is mental tranquility.

The suggestion that it may be “triggering” to see family and friends is not unique to Yale’s psychiatric staff.

Across the country, women have been cutting their hair and joining the Korean 4B movement—bihon (no marriage), bichulsan (no childbirth), biyeonae (no dating), and bisekseu (no sex). One is quoted as saying, “I fear The Handmaid’s Tale will become our reality.”

It is a curious response since figures like Reid blame white women for the loss. Trump won white women voters by eight points at 53 percent. Harris actually fell slightly in the support of women overall. Conversely, roughly 43 percent of men voted for Harris. Forty percent of women under 30 voted for Trump.

Yet I watched one deranged voter say that she is thinking of buying a “Glock” and shooting the first man who comes near her. If so, she would have an over 4 out of 10 likelihood of shooting a fellow Harris supporter.

None of this is good for our nation’s mental health and suggesting that people retreat further into their silos does not make for particularly healthy advice.

As discussed in my book, The Indispensable Right, we have become a nation of rage addicts. Taking another hit of rage will do little to break that addiction.

Jonathan Turley is the Shapiro Professor of Public Interest Law at George Washington University. He is the author of “The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage” (Simon & Schuster, 2024).

  1. To all those who voted for Harris. Please do not speak to me or interact with me in any way. I consider you as an inferior being who is very toxic. You likely have a personality disorder and lack any degree of common sense.

    1. We have a daughter who is a Child and Adolescent Psychologist and I can attest that her and many of her friends in the same job are amongst the most mentally and emotionally unstable people. This girl of ours abandoned her younger brother who considered her his best friend because her parents are against abortion. What kind of witch does that? Not one that is mentally stable.

  2. What more evidence does one need to conclude that the people are totalitarian thugs or mentally deranged or both! In either case they are truly malign and a menace to a democratic society

  3. This country is not experiencing a Pandemic of Anger, this country is experiencing a Pandemic of Ignorance at the level of National Education.

It doesn’t even have to do with political factions, in the 60’s you could have enriching and wise conversations with a Marxist Leninist and come away amazed at the cultural level and the foundation with which these people defended their points of view. In other words, they were scholars.

But this is truly disconcerting!!!!! This “Supposed Psychiatrist” does not seem to have attended even a rural science school.

What she says is NONSENSE, it has no scientific basis, and she does not even merit her Hippocratic Oath!

1- It is necessary to investigate well if she is a “REAL PSYCHIATRIST”
2- Already in the pandemic, the media created a self-proclaimed “expert scientist” as the Covid Czar, who in the end DID NOT HAVE ANY DEGREE, she was not even a Doctor.

This COUNTRY URGENTLY NEEDS to face a full-fledged Educational Reform and appoint as I appoint Elon, Secretary of the Department of Government Efficiency, DOGE and Kennedy MAHA

A Secretary of EDUCATIONAL Efficiency, and become Educated America Again.

A cabinet of 3-4, with a philanthropic activism committed to EDUCATIONAL QUALITY

    – Vivek Ramaswamy, as an “anti-woke” activist and his brilliant curriculum

  4. I’ve actually been disowned by my family already for suggesting that my cousin leaving her husband for another miserable woman would not be healthy for her kids. It’s actually not that bad, since I’m missing all the politcal insanity as a bonus. Their loss.

  5. This just supports the argument that mainstream psychiatry is just a bunch of pretentious blather from loonies who try to vicariously sort out their own pathologies by tinkering with gullible people.

  6. And they continue to be the miserable, divisive people that they are. I can’t fathom living a life like that so my answer to her is, no thank you…

  7. women need to cut off nbc, cnn, abc, cbs, yale u, columbia u, the view and every other man hating and disinformation institute that is warping the minds of americans. since 99% of people who watch these programs don’t know our Creator, let me post the outcome for you. “we would have healed you but you would not be healed” jer 51:9

  8. The closing of the American mind is a tragic thing to watch. It leads to a whole slew of mental mistakes — warpage of information processing — loss of social opportunity — creeping anxiety.

We don’t talk enough about intellectual courage. It’s the opposite of the strident, defensive front put up in the face of dissonant facts. Mental toughness is opening up your thinking to challenge, to see if it can be improved and refined. Defensiveness is the posture Prof. Randall Kennedy was arguing Harvard Univ. adopt during the recent debate with JT.

    1. pbinca posted: We don’t talk enough about intellectual courage.

Are you qualified to discuss what intellectual courage looks like? Rather than just mouth those words?

Intellectual courage would involve Democrat voters openly stated that the Clinton/Obama/Biden/DNC “Trump Russia Dossier” was an evil (and illegal) political fraud carried out against not just Trump, but the American population as well in partnership with the mainstream media. First to attempt to fix the election, and second, when that failed destroy the Trump presidency.

Intellectual courage would involve Democrat voters like yourself openly acknowledging that The Big Lie regarding the 20202 election was the claim that it was fair and transparent.

While instead the Democrat deep state within the FBI, social media, etc hid the Biden Bribery Laptop from both oversight committees and the American public for YEARS up until the election.

That Democrats recruited ’51 Intelligence Experts’ willing to lie to Americans that the laptop should be dismissed as it was just ‘Putin election campaign disinformation’.

That elected Democrats in Washington and Democrat bureaucrats ran to social media to censor established news media attempting to publish news about that laptop and the contents of the messages inside of it.

Intellectual courage would involve Democrat voters like yourself acknowledging that Democrat lawyers getting voting laws unconstitutionally changed in swing states put Democrat fingers on the scales of the election.

It would involve you acknowledging that Mark Zuckerburg dumping nearly half a billion Zuckerbucks into reliable Democrat voting districts in those states to “get out the vote”, while excluding Republican districts from getting the same funding also was part of rigging the election.

You have NEVER had the intellectual courage to acknowledge any of that here, pbinca. Which means you don’t do it anywhere else, particularly not to your fellow California Democrats.

So why would you assume you have the credibility to speak on issues like intellectual courage when you have demonstrated a complete lack of that?

  9. Shame on them for that… Just what we need from a learned democrap,, more hate, more division.

    1. My Harris voter friend cut me off after telling me that “Dump”is stupid. I won’t miss her.

  10. * Ms Calhoun is obviously part of that historic medical group in film history–> Dr. Fine, Dr. Fine and Dr. Fine.

  11. If your wife/girlfriend leaves you because they got triggered by a Trump victory….then you are a lucky man to get rid of these psychos before they get a chance to ruin your life, and make you as miserable and petty as they are.

  12. Amanda Calhoun has a low emotional IQ. Trainees like her risk tanking their career when making divisive, political judgments about groups of individuals. Hillary Clinton, Joseph Biden and Kamala Harris are excellent examples of how their careers and popularity catered with their hateful comments towards millions of Americans. Nonetheless, it is instructive that a JAMA article listing her name as one of the authors, makes “racist” conclusions while ignoring one salient fact: black on black violent crime

Nash, K.A., Tolliver, D.G., Taylor, R.A., Calhoun, A.J., Auerbach, M.A., Venkatesh, A.K. and Wong, A.H., 2021. Racial and ethnic disparities in physical restraint use for pediatric patients in the emergency department. JAMA pediatrics, 175(12), pp.1283-1285.

Black adult patients are more likely to be physically restrained in the emergency department (ED)……..Our study demonstrates that even after adjusting for sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, Black children are more likely to be physically restrained in the ED compared with White children.

It is justified that these black adults and children are restrained in the emergency department given that a very large percentage of them are there because of commiting violent crime against other blacks, often times under the influence of drugs, most of whom live in government subsidized housing.

Having lived in Richmond for 10 years, and left it recently because of becoming exhausted with violent crime outside our front door, with a black housing project nearby, it gives me no pleasure to state that Black culture sucks. It is toxic, injurious, denigrates black women in large part but also black children. The perpetrators hide behind the excuse of describing a mythic, unique black culture. The only unique feature of black culture is that it is antithetical to evolutionary principles. Blacks in Africa and those who immigrate to America rebuke distance themselves from black Americans. Caribbean blacks do as well.

Black skin isn’t the problem as Cardi B demonstrated all too well in her insulting, demeaning song (?) Wet A** Pu***. Amanda Calhoun’s medical career will be as shortlived as Kamala’s. She will be lucky to make 6 figures post-fellowship training, and that’s her own fault

Diagnosis: stupid is as stupid does

  13. So Harris voters need to exclude and even cut off associating with Trump-voting relatives for the holidays? I guess that’s because the left prioritizes inclusion, right?

  14. Now you understand.  You bleeding-heart liberals abandoned your responsibility to “KEEP” the restricted-vote republic, as Ben Franklin admonished.  The Great Men and Leaders of America lost their resolve, forfeited their power to restrict, and diluted the vote, abrogating the voting limitations that have been imperative to “democracy” since inception.  America was reduced to the covetousness, greed, and anarchy of one-man, one-vote madness.  The Founders gave the States the power to restrict the vote for good reason—to keep America sane, rational and on the Constitution. American leaders lost their ability to lead and abandoned the Constitution. The communist American welfare state is anti- and unconstitutional. The vote must be restricted by elected officials with appropriate discipline per the Constitution lest the psychosis and anarchy that is Marx be delivered dominion.

“If it were probable that every man would give his vote freely, and without influence of any kind, then, upon the true theory and genuine principles of liberty, every member of the community, however poor, should have a vote… But since that can hardly be expected, in persons of indigent fortunes, or such as are under the immediate dominion of others, all popular states have been obliged to establish certain qualifications, whereby, some who are suspected to have no will of their own, are excluded from voting; in order to set other individuals, whose wills may be supposed independent, more thoroughly upon a level with each other.”

“A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.”

“The average age of the world’ greatest civilizations from the beginning of history has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; From spiritual faith to great courage; From courage to liberty; From liberty to abundance; From abundance to selfishness; From selfishness to complacency; From complacency to apathy; From apathy to dependence; From dependence back into bondage.”

    – Alexander Tyter/de Tocqueville/Henning W. Prentis

Necessary for mental health to sever ties with the people who care about you as a person, not use you as a statistic.

    Chief psychiatry resident.

    Conclusion: psychiatry is fake.

Psychiatry is real but many of the practitioners are not and are out there both politically and mentally and damage the field and their patients

  16. They shouldn’t stop at “I won’t eat with you” but go all the way “Take me out of your will. I don’t want your dirty capitalist money either!”

  17. It’s hard to believe this country has produced so many whining candy asses! Get over yourselves people! Learn to change your own diapers! The rest of us have work to do.

    1. I know, it’s hard to believe. I’m hanging with a bunch of guys that at 18 years old were slogging their way through mountains and jungles of SE Asia getting sniped at, booby trapped and mortared.

  18. The Yale Psychiatrist substantiates that disinformation, misinformation, false information and propaganda can easily yield adverse effects upon the human mind.
