Almost twenty years ago, the country was outraged by allegations of an African-American stripper that she was hired and then gang raped by white Duke Lacrosse players. The story followed an all-too-familiar pattern. The media, professors, and pundits immediately treated the allegations as true and declared the crime as a manifestation of our racist society. Many demanded immediate suspensions of all of the students as the racial and class conflicts were emphasized in the media. As I wrote previously, Duke University joined the mob against its own students and discarded any semblance of due process or fairness. Now, the accuser Crystal Mangum has admitted that she made the whole thing up in an interview on the independent media outlet “Let’s Talk With Kat.” The problem is that little was likely learned in higher education from the experience.
The students found themselves in a nightmare as the media flash mob formed to call for their punishment. They were arrested and subject to the unethical and unprofessional treatment of former Durham County district attorney Mike Nifong.
Nifong pandered to the press and the community in public speeches despite criticism from some of us that he was fueling the rage against the students despite serious questions over this account. He declared publicly:
“The information that I have does lead me to conclude that a rape did occur. The circumstances of the rape indicated a deep racial motivation for some of the things that were done. It makes a crime that is by its nature one of the most offensive and invasive even more so.”
From the outset, there were obvious problems with the account, including a lack of supporting forensic evidence that would ordinarily be found at the scene.
Nifong was later disbarred for his misconduct, including withholding exculpatory evidence. Even after the allegation was shown to be a hoax, former North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper took the easy way out and declined to charge Mangum despite her ruining the lives of these students. She was later arrested and convicted of murdering her boyfriend.
Now, Mangum is admitting, “I testified falsely against them by saying that they raped me when they didn’t, and that was wrong, and I betrayed the trust of a lot of other people who believed in me…[I] made up a story that wasn’t true because I wanted validation from people and not from God.”
It is heartening to see Mangum come to grips with what she did and ask for forgiveness. However, there remains a lack of such remorse from many in the press and higher education who helped lead this mob against these students. Years later, many continued to resist efforts to afford due process protections to those accused in higher education.
The media followed its usual pattern of dispensing with countervailing facts to fuel the racial elements or play up the class differences. Nancy Grace declared, “I’m so glad they didn’t miss a lacrosse game over a little thing like gang rape!”
Former prosecutor Wendy Murphy, who praised Nifong’s handling of the case, said publicly that “I never, ever met a false rape claim, by the way. My own statistics speak to the truth.”
Feminist and journalist Amanda Marcotte writes for publications such as Salon and Slate. She captured the blind rage even after ethics charges were raised against Nifong, stating:
“I’ve been sort of casually listening to CNN blaring throughout the waiting area and good f**king god is that channel pure evil. For awhile, I had to listen to how the poor dear lacrosse players at Duke are being persecuted just because they held someone down and f**ked her against her will—not rape, of course, because the charges have been thrown out. Can’t a few white boys sexually assault a black woman anymore without people getting all wound up about it? So unfair.”
Marcotte later deleted the statement and criticized Nifong.
The greatest unfairness to these students came not from such extreme voices but mainstream media, which showed little interest or comfort in exploring contradictions and gaps in the account.
As is often the case, the hoax was later revealed and there was a collective shrug from most in the media as we await the next cathartic case or controversy.

I tried to follow this case as events unfolded. With two exceptions all of the media lied or distorted their accounts to promote a racist narrative that could only increase divisions and hostility in our country.
The two exceptions were an outstanding new reporter, Megyn Kelly, and the slightly less effective Dan Abrams. Both are lawyers who learned to hold judgement in abeyance until shaped by facts.
But the Duke faculty sank to depths even our corrupt corporate media couldn’t plumb. I recall one or more of them ignoring the evidence that no crime occurred and saying that whatever happened here those boys should be punished because of historical wrongs committed by white men against black women. So, basically, punish them even if innocent because of ‘history’. Setting aside the fact that many black women really aren’t very high on a rapist’s menu because of the Whoopie Goldberg factor, the savagely racist desire to punish those boys only for being white was shocking.
I decided to look at a couple of those professors’ academic papers to understand where that hatred originated.
I learned nothing but that they were frauds. The ‘expert’ academic papers were unreadable, unintelligible gibberish, no doubt ‘peer reviewed’ by an actual peer, which is to say another idiot.
Dishonest corporate ‘news’ media is crashing. Nobody cares what they say. Fortunately there are signs that the intellectually crippled and compromised universities aren’t far behind in getting a much needed stable cleaning. It can’t happen too soon.

A pardon for the 39 FBI Head Office agents who the Inspector General’s report said accepted bribes from CNN, the NYT, MSNBC and other news media in return for providing “leaks” about their dropping the Clinton investigation to spin up the Crossfire Hurricane Trump investigation. All of them were referred for prosecution in that Inspector General’s report. Pardoning them so they no longer had to fear being prosecuted by unfair Trump lawfare would help heal the nation.
A pardon for those named members of the mainstream news media for bribing those 39 FBI federal agents.
A pardon for Hillary Clinton for her five years of income tax evasion, perjury, the illegal Russia dossier, accepting Putin bribes, money laundering, and classified information crimes.

The third alleged incident occurred in the Hamptons in 2020 at Combs’ estate. The plaintiff has alleged he was anally raped by Combs and members of the rapper’s entourage. The music industry is on edge as Sean “Diddy” Combs faces mounting lawsuits and accusations. Many in the industry fear that the widening scandal will implicate prominent names. Earlier this week, fellow rapper Jay-Z was named in a new lawsuit that has claimed Jay-Z participated in the rape of a 13-year-old girl alongside Combs. Jay-Z has denied the allegations as a “blackmail attempt.”

As with a similar sham at the UVA Frat rape case, it was class warfare. Elite arrogant snobs versus downtrodden blue collar victims and their unrequested social justice advocates. Too bad for the gored oxen of our day that the reverse proved to be true as is often the case.
Liberals will always justify their most heinous actions by saying, “My intentions were good, so I am excused for what I did.” Even if they ruined the lives of many, innocent people.
There is really nothing new to any of this. The old adage of “everyone in prison is innocent, just ask them” remains a truism. Even in her confession if one calls it that, she says she has no regrets, about lying over the rape or the murder of her boyfriend. This during a “come to Jesus”, admission wherein it appears from what she says, (not having any regrets), that some liberal wing of a church has convinced her, as is becoming ever more popular in our time, that salvation is handed out to everyone. A participation award so to speak. And it’s hard to blame her for that in as much as that is what is taught in our illustrious education system. “You didn’t lose because in your thoughts you won.” Here’s a gold star for your forehead.
Most of us knew at the time that she was lying. There was too many discrepancies in her story. But even 20 years ago(it’s been that long?), the culture was that you had to believe the accusing victim or you were a sexist rape denier.
The young victims, although receiving funds through the financial settlement, were not and will never be made whole. They lost job opportunities which affected their life-long earnings, and of course, the reputational damage was something that could not be repaired.
The media was like sharks after chum. They went into a feeding frenzy and would not listen to anyone who questioned the narrative that all white men in college sports were naturally rapists. Also, the 88 faculty members who signed the letter vilifying the team members before even learning of the lack of confirming evidence in the case, suffered no repercussions from their actions. Most, if not all, went on to well paying and even tenured positions and never suffered any repercussions for their actions.
I know of a few more high-profile rape accusation cases where the media either circled around and protected the obviously guilty rapist, or else held up the false accuser as a haloed victim that didn’t need evidence but must be believed at face value no matter what. That allowed some perpetrators to walk away scott-free as true victims suffered, and also allowed some fake accusers to walk away with millions of dollars while the falsely accused had to pay a steep price. In all those cases, the media played a major part in the outcome.
* Same old story. Without the smoking gun you ain’t got nuttin’. At least produce a blue dress you forgot to launder.

Jonathan: Let’s get this straight. You think one of the big stories of the day is that a former stripper now admits she lied about being raped by three Duke lacrosse players in 2006? Really? What you don’t mention in your column is that the following year the NC AG said there was no credible evidence to support Crystal Mangum’s claim–no DNA, witnesses and other evidence the rape ever occurred. The Durham prosecutor who championed Mangum was disbarred for lying and other misconduct in the investigation. You also don’t mention that in 2007 the former lacrosse players settled with Duke for undisclosed amount. The were made whole for the false accusations.
That should have been the end of the story. But after Mangum’s admission Fox News decided revive the story with lots of photos of Mangum in a long article yesterday. Could it be because Mangum is Black? Would Fox give the same coverage had the accuser of the Duke players been White? And you know your role. It’s to provide an echo chamber for Fox and other right-wing media to push racist tropes!

You seem to be confusing the various actors in this saga all over the place.
The real world FACTS are that
people make true allegations – especially of sexual misconduct and are not believed all the time.
AND
people make false allegations – especially of sexual misconduct and are believed all if the time.
It is very often difficult or even impossible to sort out.
While certainty about specific claims is elusive – there is little doubt of the predatory behavior of Weinstein or Epstein and his clients.
I beleived Anita Hill during the Thomas hearings – though I would note her allegations are TAME compared to those against Clinton.
I was initially skeptical of Jenifer Flowers – but there is now an enormous body of evidence that Bill Clinton is a sexual preditor.
I initially beleived Stormy Daniels – but I did NOT find her testimony Credible. Though separately whether her story is true or false it did NOT
legitimately lead to any claim of criminality. Further whether Daniels is telling the truth or not – there is little doubt that Trump is not faithful to his spouses.
I do Not beleive Ford or Carroll. I strongly suspect something happened to Ford, but I have little doubt it had nothing to do with Judge or Kavanaugh.
As to Carroll – she has accuse every man she has crossed paths with of rape. She is nuts and not beleivable.

But the odds are that I am correct on all of them.

Dennis: It is really sort of chilly here, even though the temp is in the high 50’s. So I cut my porch time down, and came on in. I think I will steam the last of my head of green cabbage tonite, perhaps with some Polish sausage. I will have gotten at least 8 or 9 meals out of that one head, which has saved me a lot of money. I had even put out bacon bread and Great Value Froot Loops for them, and that was untouched as well. They do not seem bothered by the red dye or anything. Something I do, and you may want to try as well, is when you fry up bacon, drain the bacon onto a piece of cheap white bread. Then, I also clean out the skillet by either pouring the grease over the bread, or by putting the bread directly into the skillet. Let it harden up, and it makes a great treat for coons, possums, and even birds! Plus, you reduce the grease that goes down the drain.
Perhaps there is something you can help me with. I have often been disturbed by the fact that there are no black Froot Loops. Could it be a racial thing??? I mean, blackberries are black, and they even have black grapes, although they seem a little more dark purple on time. Also, both prunes and raisins are black, so there is certainly a fruit basis for black Froot Loops, either of the real kind, or the generic Great Values ones. You seem well versed on racial things, and sensitive to issues of systemic racism, so I was wondering if you had any thoughts on this.

Sigh. Just, sigh. I got nothin’ left for the modern left, and I wish I had more to say about that, except that not much has changed over the years. The American Democratic Party ceased to be something to take seriously many decades ago. The damage they have wrought on this country is just too big to calculate. I am not a monster, so I actually hope that injured Nancy is ok for the people who love her; the modern left and all of their collective and generational insanity would happily put a bullet in my head for the simple transgression of disagreeing with them. This is a fact in 2024, and I, indeed, we, have had enough.
There is no way to repair the damage this woman did, and it’ll take decades to repair all that the current administration has done and continues to do, all the way out the door. It is disgusting. There is no other word, and they have clearly not heard the people; we will double defeat them in 2026, triply in 2028. I hope with all sincerity that the rest of the Western world finds their courage and follows our example.
And though this is straying from the topic a tad, very unexpectedly, even after the Cold War, we are once again engaged in a battle of freedom vs. oligarchy with modern communists that have infiltrated like cockroaches.
