Sotomayor’s Headache: The United Kingdom Upholds Ban on Puberty-Blocking Drugs for Minors

In the aftermath of the contentious Supreme Court arguments in United States v. Skrmetti over state bans on puberty blockers and gender-altering surgeries, the United Kingdom reaffirmed that it finds the risks far outweigh the benefits of such treatments for minors under the currently available scientific evidence. The move by the liberal Labour Party stands in sharp contrast with the portrayal of the Biden Administration and the treatment of the subject by the liberal justices. Justice Sonia Sotomayor was widely criticized for analogizing puberty-blocking drugs to taking aspirin. It appears that doctors in the UK are not ready to tell minors to just “take two puberty blockers and call me in the morning.”

UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting said last week, “Children’s health care must always be evidence-led. The independent expert Commission on Human Medicines found that the current prescribing and care pathway for gender dysphoria and incongruence presents an unacceptable safety risk for children and young people.”

The decision follows the release of the Cass Review, which was raised by the conservative justices as contradicting the factual representations of the Biden Administration, even leading Justice Samuel Alito to suggest that Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar and the government might not have fulfilled their duty of candor to the tribunal. He noted that the Cass study found scant evidence that the benefits of transgender treatment are greater than the risks. He then delivered the haymaker: “I wonder if you would like to stand by the statement in your position or if you think it would now be appropriate to modify that and withdraw your statement.”

 

Streeting cited significant doubts about the benefits of puberty blockers while noting the “significant risks” to children.

The government will allow puberty blockers to be administered to children in clinical trials.

It is not clear if the Supreme Court will take “judicial notice” of the new decision, but it can.

In fairness to Sotomayor, she was trying to argue that all treatments have risks in making her aspirin analogy. Yet, the comment was taken as trivializing the alleged harm and trauma raised by many in this debate. These studies clearly show greater risks than those associated with aspirin. However, what the Biden Administration was arguing (and the liberal justices were seemingly supporting) is that states would be barred by the Court from reaching the same conclusion as the UK and other countries. Indeed, Streeting echoed what the states argued to the Supreme Court that the government must  “act with caution and care when it comes to this vulnerable group of young people, and follow the expert advice.”

    There’s been a mifepristone death in Texas. Apparently another law was passed with mifepristone making liability suits and criminal suits impossible.

    The states will divide and feds cut back to non-existence.

    1. * It’s quite unbelievable that the highest court in the land is considering the amputation of genitals and secondary sex traits for children and minors who do not know what it is to be a man or woman pre-puberty.

      Sotomayor compared amputation to aspirin and Jackson to interracial marriage . Both should be impeached immediately based on mental instability. For congress not to have moved on this makes them complicit.

      It is impossible to change genders, sex. One can only amputate and change secondary characteristics. This is massive child abuse.

I still maintain that the only way to end this gender madness once and for all, is to gather a few hundred now-adults who were maimed and disfigured as children and have a class-action lawsuit against all the hospitals, doctors, schools, teachers, lawyers, judges, and everyone else who enabled this madness, even some parents. Let is all hang out – all the pain, agony, and heartbreak, all those driven to suicide, all those who long to be whole again but have no remedy, all the lies that were told to impressionable young minds, all the resulting bitterness and hopelessness. Sue for at least a hundred trillion dollars, and win it. For those who did it with malicious intent or for their own kinky sexual gratification, throw them in jail and lose the key. That may seem a bit harsh, but it will only need to be done once, and all this incredible evil will be pushed back to hell where it belongs.

I can’t even imagine in the 80s if this was an option what I might have done at 11 years old. But my parents would never have allowed it. Insanity. Why are we allowing parents today to do it? Bc their kid might kill themself? Were is that pressure from? Who is giving those ideas as an option? When I came up we were taught suicide was blaphemy. You go to hell. If that is no longer the premise then I want a boob job a tummy tuck anti-aging etc al. Or ill kill myself. Weird we don’t make anorexia eat – but we chop boys dicks off. Why?

  3. * Bostoc has weight. Age has weight, too. It’s also muddied by parental guardianship. At one time it’s argued parents don’t have a right to know when children are at school and then it’s argued parents have the right to transition a minor. It’s either or.

    Medical decisions have been removed by courts if a child is endangered as to life if medical care is withheld by parents even by religious beliefs and again in abuse.

    It’s too complex for me, too, Justice Kavanaugh. Chase Strangio arguing for transitioned at age 16. Others are destransitioning. It’s like a chess game, Justice Gorsuch, where way leads on to way.

    When the Constitution becomes the only thing called upon as core moral beliefs it’s a problem. Did any of it really mean any of this? It’s a political science system. Wasn’t it really just about black people and equality? Isn’t that really what it was about? Who put new patches on an old document? If you do that it’ll ruin the whole document. Old wine…new skins…

    I have no idea but it’s also a road not taken long I stood and looked down one to where it bent in the undergrowth and took the other just as fair and that has made all the difference…

    1. * There’s a lemon tree in my yard. It’s a Meyer lemon. This tree is a graft of Meyer onto another type of lemon stock. The stock was some primitive giant lemon with think dimple skin and little juice.

      As years have passed the tree has reverted back to stock on half the tree and the other half are Meyer lemons. One day the stock portion will be removed but the once small Meyer tree thinks it’s a giant thing reaching far above the rooftop.

      There was one lemon that fell and it was odd. Half the lemon was Meyer and the other half stock. Funny looking thing. It was both types in one.

      As the story goes the creator made a man first and then by grafting a rib of chromosomes from the man made a woman. One imagines, Mr. Walsh, God made a 2nd man to receive that graft like my tree. XY shows a missing rib and XX shows the additional rib. Man has 7 genetic ribs and woman has 8 ribs if counted.

      Like my tree sometimes that graft doesn’t work well. Sometimes the graft reverts to stock.

      No one understands genetics. It’s being studied and experiments done. It’s all a shot in the dark unless a lemon falls that is half stock and half Meyer do we know. There are expressed, unexpressed, silenced genes and diseases can be turned on genetically.

      Children aren’t your lab monkeys. Children are to be handled with care and like the one lemon that fell that day interventions are allowable if evident. Puberty blockers may switch on diseases unknown.

      I don’t care much for Mr. Walsh. He’s too much brimstone. It’s understandable. His attempts to save children are noteworthy.

    Substance ingestion is certainly and irrefutably a natural and God-given right and freedom provided by the 9th Amendment.

    Article 1, Section 8 provides no power to Congress to regulate substance ingestion.

    Ingestion forced or induced by adults against minors of toxic or injurious substances is a crime; parents and guardians who cause physical injury or death to minors are guilty of poisoning or homicide.

    1. For some it is difficult to grasp and remember that it is precisely the government that is severely limited and restricted by the Constitution and Bill of Rights, while the people are provided the absolute maximum amount of freedom possible.

This is actually a slippery slope and a bit of a tight wire act; yes, it is sane to not give children drugs that ruin their biology for the rest of their lives; and yet, this a country where you can’t say a covid booster is bad or that cows are not the devil. Grain of salt. We need similar measures here for this particular topic (pre-millennials, we used to just call that sense), but don’t be fooled into thinking modern Labour is anything resembling sane. They are not.

    It *does* give us great fodder for the leftist idjits that are always telling us to ‘follow Europe’, though, and it is all too ridiculous for me to even comprehend anymore. We knew better before, and all of this was entirely unnecessary. Seriously and really – it’s called ‘sanity’. Sanity is something a great many who are young people today will wish we had when we could have protected them, before they were older and broken. Sotomayer will not be remembered fondly in the time stream. No modern leftist will be.

    When I was a child, we lived in a newly-developed suburban area @ 15 miles from a major metropolis. We had a deep, long yard, a small garden (tomatoes, strawberries), and woods behind us.
    I had no female playmates or neighbors, and was quite bored with dolls or puppets that didn’t move or speak back to me. I couldn’t sit still long enough to learn embroidery or cutting out doll clothes from my mother’s cedar chest filled with fabric remnants. I showed no interest in an indoor kitchen with hot ovens and sharp utensils, even though my mother included me. She also played cards and “jacks” and hula-hoop with me. (I DID have music lessons, stamp collection, art instruction, shelves of books, and yes! my own microscope!)

    But I was restless, with pent-up energy. For whatever reason, I was more fascinated with the UNknown of the “outdoors.”

    —-All this while my brother (a year and a half older) and his friends ran around “exploring” nature in the woods, spending the night in a tent with flashlights, reading Hero comic books, building a clubhouse, playing baseball, climbing trees, fishing in the creek, building extravagant structures with “Tinker Toys” and logs, experimenting with their chemistry sets or telescopes, running their electric trains around on elaborate scenic tracks, and building/traveling around in homemade pedal cars. Even worse, my father took him to work with him, once or twice a year, while I stayed home with Mom.
    I was envious. I wanted very badly to be a boy. I ignored my closet filled with cute clothes. didn’t want to sit still and be a pretty little girl, and I wanted to run around outdoors in my brother’s old, outgrown T-shirts and shorts.

    Of course, once puberty hit, I had crushes on,- and was “falling in love” with– my brother’s friends. All the time.
    …post-pubescent, I grew up to be blessed with modestly good looks and feminine appeal, and a happy life.

    But here’s the point:
    Back then, we would have been called “tomboys.”
    Today, we would be labeled are gender-dysphoric children in urgent need of advocative puberty blockers, name changes, and later surgical intervention.
    Yikes. I’m glad my parents just let me be me.

      Yup, agreed on every point. And apparently we started handing out law degrees in boxes of Lucky Charms, and those people went on to become Supreme Court Justices. It’s madness. 🤷🏻‍♂️

      That is a great post. My neighbor was a tomgirl. We would hang out, play sports together. Yes, puberty happened and I had a huge crush on her. She was actually my first kiss. Good memories. Last time I saw her was at my sisters wedding. As grown ups, we talked nostalgia and had a good laugh together about how goofy and awkward we were at the time.

    1. Sotomayor was and still is under-qualified to be on the SCOTUS. Her public comments regarding disagreements she’s had with the court rulings would seem reason enough to have her removed. It’s difficult to view an ‘unmade bed’ sitting on the Supreme Court !
