And I Have a Bridge in Brooklyn to Sell You: Schumer Suggests that the Administration Caused the Mexican Ship Collision

It has long been a practice for New York sharpies to scam chumps by offering to sell them the Brooklyn Bridge. However,  Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) tried an even harder scam in selling the idea on Sunday that the collision of the Mexican training ship Cuauhtémoc and the Brooklyn Bridge was the fault of the Trump Administration. Schumer appears to have missed the boat, literally, given the immediate reports of a loss of navigation ability on the vessel. In any case, the suggestion that cuts in staffing led to the crash is just the latest Democratic spin that dispenses with any factual foundation.

Democratic members have been actively spreading unfounded claims from the start of the Administration that tragedies were caused by reductions in staff or programs. That included blaming the Administration for a crash that occurred less than 24 hours after the new FAA commissioner took office as well as a crash in Canada due to bad weather. It simply does not matter if the claims are factually absurd. Democrats are rarely accused of disinformation and rely on a generally enabling legacy media.

The same pattern emerged after the blackout at Newark in a system that was flagged as antiquated during the Biden Administration and should have been replaced years ago. Despite only being in office for just over 100 days, the Democrats blamed the Trump Administration for the system failure.

Schumer pushed some of those earlier false claims. However, his gambit with the Brooklyn Bridge would embarrass the most hardened Brooklyn Bridge-selling grifter.

Unwilling to let any tragedy go to waste, the Democratic minority leader issued a press release declaring

“We know there has been meddling by the Trump administration into USCG staffing, and we need to know how this might have impacted the events of last night — from a command, communication and local coordination level. There are indications that this service [Vehicle Traffic System] may not be fully or adequately functional in light of a hiring freeze. If this were the case, the Brooklyn Bridge accident would be a national harbinger, demanding immediate attention.”

However, there is no such connection or allegation in the accident that killed two sailors and injured 17 others.

The Coast Guard was obviously not amused. It issued its own press release Sunday that said that it immediately responded to the scene of the deadly collision:

“Sector New York immediately launched a crew from Coast Guard Station New York to the scene and established a safety zone from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Manhattan Bridge. New York Vessel Traffic Services suspended commercial traffic in the area.”

President Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency eliminated its Logistics Information Management System, which managed configuration, maintenance, supply chain and technical data. It was viewed as ineffective and the cut saved over $32 million. It had nothing to do with the accident.

The hair-trigger attacks after these tragedies only deepen the public’s distrust. Polling shows that the public’s confidence in Democrats in Congress is at a record low of 25%.

On the day of Schumer’s comment, a new poll from the Associated Press (AP) and NORC at the University of Chicago found that only 35 percent of Democrats are optimistic about the party’s future.

That makes sense when your Senate minority leader is trying to sell the public a bridge story that treats them like moronic marks who will buy anything.

  1. So sad to see once a great political party become a sham of what they once were, a party of all the people. I have no idea what this convoluted bunch of confused and dazed party they have seem to have come except for total power over “we the people”. Sad and scary where this party is headed.

  2. If Democrats want to figure out why they lost last November and why their favorability rating is in the tank, they should look no further than Schumer’s statement implicating Trump in the bridge accident and the advisors who put him up to say it. Schumer should have been smart enough to decline his advisor’s recommendation to go public with such an outlandish charge however, he again proves to us that he is not very smart. Had the Democrats won the election, these people would now be running the federal government. God helped us.

  3. The photos plainly showed the sails were furled (not used). Even old sailing ships have engines retro fitted in. The days of anchoring in port and rowing to the dock are over. Uncontrolled docking wrecks ships and docks. I assumed correctly the engine failed to counteract the current, and the tug boat was unable to get ropes on to tow him in time and he was quickly in the Kim Chee.
The crash was one hundred percent the captains fault for not anticipating the danger. He should walk the plank!

  4. Chuckee has very meticulously thought it all out. It’s not really a fear for the nation that is his main concern. Rather it is his playing to his constituents in a deep blue state. He knows that the people who elected him think like him and will crawl under every rock to find anything wrong with the Trump administration no matter how ridiculous it is. Schumer is the captain of this ship of fools and his scallywags will gladly keep mopping the decks in front of the voting booth. Due to his voters he has no fear of recrimination and will continue to rave on about the missing strawberries. He’s sailed to a tropical island and he’s crazy for coco puffs.

  5. If Trump would just put some cheese on raw burger patties, then perhaps his leadership of the Mexican navy would improve.

  6. I know she’s a wack job, but I’d love to see AOC primary this old fart into retirement.

    1. She will. It’s the rise of incompetence. Western hemisphere is done. EU done. Africa has always been done. India done. China communist. Middle East tempory. Grow a garden and spend your life growing food and preserving it. Once the trees are gone burn cow pies.

      1. The ideas expressed by Schumer are just plain nuts. He’s mentally ill in reality completely lacking logic. Most of the dems are. Bipolar, or obsessive, compulsions, agitation and psychomotor control resulting in endless protests, screaming, clanging nonsense.

Some idiot senator focuses on one man deported instead of the ocean of homeless people. Maybe it’s easier to focus on one than an ocean of problems in faux control.

        Quite amazing…

        1. #9. There’s no shortage of the naive when it comes to the bright shiny object. And of course, the “Maryland Man”, turned out to be just like the Piltdown Man. A fraud perpetrated by a fraudster.

  7. It is a sign of institutional laziness. Why waste time investigating, or reading long, icky bills? Far easier to just oppose everything Trump or the Republicans do, and blame everything on them. Coming up with far-fetched accusations leaves more time for taking selfies, or preening in front of cameras with edgy theatrics to get ‘likes’ and shares. The Base demands it.

  8. “. . . meddling by the Trump administration into USCG staffing, and we need to know how this might have impacted the events of last night . . .” (Schumer)

Actually, Schumer might be on to something. But he’s focusing on the wrong agency.

The Mexican vessel is a sailing ship. It uses wind power. The DOGE fascists cut the Department of Energy, specifically targeting the Offices of Clean Energy and of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (the wind!). And everyone knows that the dictator Trump hates wind power.

Ergo, Trump’s chainsaw lunatics caused the Mexican ship to operate without sufficient wind, which caused it to drift into the bridge.

(Please do not confuse my thoughtful analysis with facts such as: The ship’s sails were not deployed, and that it was operating under motor power.)

  9. Sen. Chicken Little Schumer and his buddies on the left truly need to seek mental health care.

    1. Exactly what I thought when I heard that Schumer had weighed in with his brilliant analysis.
Chuck — you need a mental acuity test —

    2. Yes, profound mental illness without any idea of logic or morality. Morality is a form of logic. What is the psychiatric condition that causes people to tear up things, people, ideas and places? IDK

  10. Sorry Chuckey, more bad news.

A Mexican naval ship in the East River accelerated suddenly in the wrong direction before slamming its masts into the Brooklyn Bridge in a crash that killed two crew members, federal transportation officials said on Monday.

  11. They never stop…never. The democrat socialist/communist party has failed miserably at the federal, state and local level, and all they have left is to sit back and make up even more lies about Trump and his administration. They have been lying non-stop for over 8 years about him, and their TDS will simply not allow them to stop. All of their ideas fail…so now all they do is to ‘resist’ absolutely anything Trump does. These people are so full of hate for everyone (‘garbage’…..’deplorables’) who refuse to see the world through progressive lenses.

  12. I served in the Coast Guard from 1974 – 1978. I did search and rescue coxswain, Law Enforcement, and Aids to Navigation. I can tell you the US Coast Guard had nothing to do with the crash. The ultimate responsibility of any Maritime accident always rests with the Captain. He is responsible for his ship, his crews readiness to handle emergencies, knowing the height, beam and draft of his ship, and navigation. He should be on the Bridge when operating in confined of high traffic areas.

“The vessel didn’t use a tugboat’s assistance,” said Senator Chuck Schumer

Chuck the US Coast Guard does not provide ‘tugboat’s assistance’. It is not a named duty. Ships must request tugboats and pay them.

Schumer is not wanted by his own party or the opposition and is trying to make himself relevant with ignorant comments.

His party under the Biden administration signed an infrastructure bill into law, officially known as the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, was initially estimated at $547–715 billion but was ultimately amended to approximately $1.2 trillion, which included $550 billion in new spending. Yet they fix nothing. Quit blaming for failing infrastructure on others and lay the blame where it belongs, on BIDEN and the DEMOCRATS.

    1. This says it all. Keep it up libs.
University of Chicago found that only 35 percent of Democrats are optimistic about the party’s future.

      1. OOPS Sorry libs, even the Coast Guard is calling you out.

The Coast Guard rejected Schumer’s claim in a statement of its own. Furthermore, there were no other ships involved in Saturday’s crash that would have involved the VTS

    2. Thanks, Jake, for that input. I guess Chuck thinks all those river pilots are government employees. You can’t make this garbage the left is spewing as they scream WOLF!

    3. “The vessel didn’t use a tugboat’s assistance,” said Senator Chuck Schumer.

That tells you all you need to know. We generally use tugboats for barges and large ships. Any ship navigating in and out of a harbor, especially near ocean waters, typically requires a tug.

This alone shows Schumer isn’t sharp enough to flip hamburgers.

My own bridge opens every half hour for tall boats. Fixed bridges are built high enough for most vessels, but those that are taller either wait for an opening or avoid the route. The Brooklyn Bridge is a fixed bridge. That means if the ship was too tall to pass under, it never should’ve gone that way.

So either there was a mechanical failure, the captain didn’t know the height limits of the bridge, didn’t check the tide levels, or simply went in the wrong direction. But Schumer? He’s commenting like he doesn’t understand the basics of marine traffic. That is the problem withDemocrats. They do not know enough to be expected to pass bills regulating the rest of us.
