Escape from New York: Democrats Embrace Socialist for New Mayor

The presumptive selection (pending the results of New York’s ranked-voting system) of Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani as the Democratic nominee has sent shockwaves throughout the business and political establishment. For those calling for the party to move more to the center, New Yorkers just responded with a Bronx cheer by choosing a socialist who wants city-run grocery stores, an eleven-percent city corporate tax rate, free child care, free buses, and other far-left wish list items.  Real estate in Florida is about to skyrocket.

Mamdani has said that he intends to make New York a “model for the Democratic Party” by moving to the far left and embracing socialist policies. Despite being called anti-Israel, Mamdani crushed Andrew Cuomo with young college-educated voters.

Mamdani has advanced a decidedly anti-police agenda:

He also has a full panoply of progressive promises, including to pay for freezing rents, providing free child care, and other programs by “taxing the rich.” It is a return to the “eat the rich” calls of figures from Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.) to former mayor Bill de Blasio.

Politicians have long turned to the “Eat the rich!” battle cry when things are not working out politically or economically. When struggling in the 2020 Democratic presidential primaries, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) pledged a wealth taxdeclaring that she was coming after “the diamonds, the yachts, and the Rembrandts too.” Then-New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, another Democratic contender at the time, was barely registering in the polls when he promised that “we will tax the hell out of the wealthy.”

The election also reinforces the opposition of many to the move to restore the state and local tax (SALT) deductions, which forces taxpayers in low-tax states to subsidize residents in high-tax states, such as California and New York. By allowing the deductions, politicians can assure New Yorkers that they will receive some of the money back from the rest of the country through deductions, justifying even higher tax hikes. I have long opposed SALT deductions as a uniquely bad idea.

The question is whether wealthy individuals and corporations will accelerate the exit from New York in light of continued support for increasing tax burdens and public subsidies.

Eric Adams could still prevail over Mamdani as an independent in the general election. Cuomo has also not ruled out an independent run. However, the results of the election show the increasing hold of socialist politics on many New Yorkers.

  1. Can’t remember when Congress Changed the tax laws to adding a 10% tax to luxury Yachts and Aircraft. What Happened? Airplane and Yacht sales declined. The rich stopped buying. Sales men or sales companies lost commissions. . Yacht and Aircraft manufacture started laying off workers. Mechanics for aircraft and yachts were Laid off. Aircraft, Yacht fuelers were laid off, Aircraft Hangers lost revenue, Marine storage facilities lost revenue, facilities maintenance worker were laid off. But if we tax the rich that will pay for free Bus service, free childcare, city run grocery stores run by politicians… anyone see a trend here?

  2. I read the comments and agree with all of the reasons that his policies will turn NYC into a raging dumpster fire that will disproportionately harm the most vulnerable. HOWEVER, I sincerely hope that he wins. New Yorkers richly deserve to feast on the inevitable consequences of their ideological fantasies, and to do so while someone is in the White House that will not mitigate their just rewards with federal money.

  3. Nothing is free. It’s all paid for by taxpayers. Mayor Adams had to cut the budget to pay for the wave of illegal immigrants. Candidate Mamdani would squeeze already over-burdened taxpayers to provide more “free” gifts.

He should look to California, where constantly going after businesses for more taxes just drove them out of state. Instead of gleaning more tax revenue, the state gets nothing at all.

  4. Young, college-aged voters chose a socialist, anti-police, antisemite who called for the destruction of Israel, because the education system, from K-grad school, has become a system of madrassas to the far Left. There is arguably more indoctrination than education happening in universities today.

College campuses were ground zero for the persecution of Jews.

Conservatives observed the gradual takeover of the entire education system by far Left activists, but were ineffective at stopping it. Public schools became training grounds for future Democrat activists.

Today, it’s an antisemitic mayor. Tomorrow, maybe the White House and Congressional majority, that may very well cut off aid to Israel and enable its destruction.

Complaints are meaningless, when we fail to stop schools from becoming essentially socialist youth camps.

  5. THE SINGULAR AMERICAN FAILURE IS THE JUDICIAL BRANCH, WITH EMPHASIS ON THE SUPREME COURT.
    ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Zohran Mamdani is a communist, and communism is unconstitutional, which the judicial branch must have decided long ago.

Start here: The absolute 5th Amendment right to private property shall not be denied.

Karl Marx: “The theory of the Communists may be summed up in the single sentence: Abolition of private property.”

Under the U.S. Constitution, only the owner of private property, such as a grocery store, has the power to “claim and exercise” dominion.

Only the owner has the power to establish the business model.

Only the owner has the power to set wages and prices.
    ____________________________________________________________

“[Private property is] that dominion which one man claims and exercises over the external things of the world, in exclusion of every other individual.”

    – James Madison

    1. The Supreme Court must have held long ago that only the owner of New York rental property has the power to set rental prices and to “claim and exercise” dominion.

The Supreme Court agreed with and supported Karl Marx and the Communist Manifesto and denied and did not support the “manifest tenor” of the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

      1. THE COMMUNIST SUPREME COURT MUST BE IMPEACHED EN MASSE FORTHWITH AND BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!
        __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

“…courts…must…declare all acts contrary to the manifest tenor of the Constitution void.”

“…men…do…what their powers do not authorize, [and] what they forbid.”
        _______________________________________________________________________________

“[A] limited Constitution … can be preserved in practice no other way than through the medium of courts of justice, whose duty it must be to declare all acts contrary to the manifest tenor of the Constitution void. Without this, all the reservations of particular rights or privileges would amount to nothing … To deny this would be to affirm … that men acting by virtue of powers may do not only what their powers do not authorize, but what they forbid.”

        – Alexander Hamilton

  6. Nobody has benefited more from socialism than Donald Trump.

Trump is snagging a luxury jet for own personal use, not for use by future presidents, paid for by you and me. His properties in Manhattan and worldwide are protected by taxpayer funded Secret Service officials – funded by you and me. His birthday parade was funded by you and me. All of his frivolous litigation is funded by you and me.

Trump and the mayor-candidate have much in common!

    1. > Trump is snagging a luxury jet for own personal use, not for use by future presidents, paid for by you and me.

I’m not paying for a gift to the US government, if you think you are, then you need to check with your accountant, as you’re being conned again.

      > His properties in Manhattan and worldwide are protected by taxpayer funded Secret Service officials – funded by you and me.

Oh I get it, since he’s not a legitimate president, he doesn’t deserve the same government protection as every other president. He also uses private security (gee, I wonder why) but I doubt anyone else is picking up the tab for that. Some socialist.

      > His birthday parade was funded by you and me.

The 250th anniversary parade for the Army was mostly paid for by corporate sponsors. Whoops!

      > All of his frivolous litigation is funded by you and me.

We’re talking about Gavin Newsom and his infantile attempt to play general, now? I thought you were ranting about President Trump.

      1. The state of California has cut funding for important programs in order to pay for Newsom’s litigious crusade against Trump, which is nothing more than positioning himself as a future presidential candidate at California taxpayer expense.

        1. Nothing is more important to Newsom than Newsom. You have to break a few eggs to make that omelet, and if the people of California have to suffer, that’s a sacrifice that Newsom is willing to make for Newsom.

    2. So you have no problem with our taxpayer money protecting the likes of criminals such as hillary, bill, obama, michelle and all their private luxury homes??? Just how many private trips did the dems take on the taxpayer dime – such as that pitiable trip to El Salvador to protect the “rights” of an illegal criminal hiding in plain site in Maryland. Get off your high horse and look at the dem mess found in each and every blue run urban cesspool/sanctuary city.

    3. His properties in Manhattan and worldwide are protected by taxpayer funded Secret Service officials
AND DON’T YOU DARE TRY TO REMIND ME THAT BOLSHEVIK BARACK’S NEW MANSIONS, AFTER BEING PRESIDENT MADE HIM AN INSTANT MILLIONAIRE, ALSO HAVE TAXPAYER FUNDED SECRET SERVICE GUARDING THOSE MANSIONS!

Anybody believe the claims that Bolshevik Barack paid for his own lawyers all the times he ended up in court – you know, like when the FEC charged him for multiple violations of election law?

Surely this Marxist Useful Idiot sent here from the Soviet Democrat Borg knows Obama’s mansions get Secret Service protection and taxpayers paid his legal bills while he was still a practicing political grifter?

    4. @anonymous

ATS is a well deserved moniker. Pbblt. 😝😝😝 Oh, and also, $$$. Congratulations. 🙄

    5. An
Trump is snagging a luxury jet for own personal use
      **********************
What a fool you are. Trump has his own jet. (757) The cost of flying a 747-800 is huge.
You must be a friend of george, he claims to know everything about jets.

    6. And you are a Socialist with very incorrect information! When making statements like this GO WITH ALL DETAILS TOO!

  7. All Americans, including Republicans, support a healthy balance of socialism.

Most Americans support “socialized” police protection. Socialized fire departments. Socialized rescue squads. Socialized public schools. Socialized drinking water systems. Socialized roads and interstates. And Social Security (mostly subsidized after the first 5 years).

All of support some socialization, the question is how much is healthy and is there a return-on-financial investment that benefits us?

    1. In much of the country most of what you consider to be socialist enterprises are either private or volunteer driven.

Most Americans would be thrilled to get the amount of government that they pay for. Instead we get police that don’t arrest criminals blocking traffic, and fire departments that would rather do DEI instead of putting out fires. Folks in California would kill to have a highway system that wasn’t a dystopian nightmare, but their government betters are busy not building a high speed train to nowhere instead. I’m sure the residents of Flynt, Michigan just love their pubic drinking water system. Given the flatlined or worse test scores since the creation of the Department of “Education” I wouldn’t go blowing the horn for public schools either. Students come out of public universities with lower test scores than when they entered, but I suppose that’s fine because at least they “reassigned” their “gender” three times while there. Social security is a Ponzi scheme, the “contributions” go straight into the general fund, and have for decades. Some investment.

Leftists love to use the word investment, even though they don’t have a clue what it even means. Here’s a hint, you invest your money because you’re risking your capital in order to generate a positive return. When the government spends money that it took through taxation, there is no risk involved, since it’s not their money. So what if they squander it on bribes and kickbacks for a non-existant high speed train? What are you going to do about it? I mean, it’s not like you’re going to do something meaningful like vote for a Republican. They’re just icky.

    2. The Constitution does not support socialism.

Read Article 1, Section 8, and the absolute 5th Amendment right to private property, comrade, it may be “taken” but not otherwise controlled in any way, shape, or form.

    3. @Anonymous

This is almost the single most stupid thing I’ve ever heard this year. No, you do not speak for anyone else, and no, we don’t. Twiddling with your algorithms is not that far from twiddling with the tiny thing between your legs or between your ears. Go blow, and enjoy the dollars you made from those individual words. You are at best an idiot, at worst a tool. And nobody here cares. Go buy a falafel from a food cart because you are too pathetic to cook something yourself at home. I’ll bet store bought spaghetti baffles you with it’s simple guidelines.

  8. The socialist Mamdani has “promised to pay for freezing rents,” and wants “city-run grocery stores, [. . .] free child care, free buses.” (JT)

Here are some of the decades-long problems plaguing NYC’s socialist public housing: mismanagement, neglect, severe physical deterioration, “leaks, rodent infestations, mold, and structural damage,” bribery and corruption, rampant crime — all of which endanger the health and safety of residents.

Now the socialist looter wants to bring that Lord of the Flies disaster to NYC’s grocery stores, transportation, child care.

Socialists learn nothing from their own disastrous history, let alone from the world’s history of socialist debacles.

    1. To the left, hard work and productivity are replaced with make-believe and dependence.

    2. Freezing rents, while making it more expensive to own property, will just lead to more landlords selling their properties, and getting out of the rental business. Government owned housing, like The Projects, were an infamous failure.

All rent control does is lead to more scarcity of units.

    3. Well, hell need to put everything behind lock and key as the current businesses do? Just order online and a drone delivers or little cars without drivers deliver. No one need leave the caves.
