Happy Independence Day!
Despite the planned protests, most Americans will join today in celebrating our common article of faith in the Declaration of Independence. This country remains the greatest hope for freedom in the world, and these protests reaffirm those rights. We celebrate the ideals of the people we strive to be — and the millions who came before us. We will be watching the fireworks tonight at home with family and setting off our own after grilling up burgers, brats, corn, and other items for our Independence Day celebration.
This is a great day for family, food, and fun. It is also a day to remember and to celebrate what we have accomplished in the protection of liberty.
I truly love this holiday because it ideally celebrates what we have in common, rather than what divides us. For all of our faults and failures, we have triumphed over great evils from without and within. The Framers gave us a system that has withstood the test of time and turmoil. It will withstand these days and we will find a course forward as a nation.

This revolution in the practice of the world, may, with an honest praise, be pronounced the most triumphant epoch of its history, and the most consoling presage of its happiness.”

Jonathan: For millions of Americans there’s not much to celebrate this Fourth of July. Speaker Mike Johnson barely got the votes he needed to get DJT’s “Big Beautiful Bill” across the finish line. Six or seven MAGA Republicans opposed the bill because of the drastic cuts to Medicaid and other social programs that benefit their constituents. What changed their minds? They got a photo op in the Oval Office with DJT who gave then his autograph on trinkets! Completely insane!
So now we have a bill that gives DJT and his billionaire friends $975 billion in permanent tax cuts that they really don’t need. The offsets? Medicaid is being cut aby $1 trillion along with other programs that Americans depend upon. And who will be affected by these drastic cuts? Rural hospitals in particular. There is already fallout. Community Hospital in McCook, Nebraska, population 7,253, has just announced it is closing. Troy Bruntz, the CEO of CH, said: “Unfortunately, the current financial environment, driven by anticipated federal budget cuts to Medicaid, has made it impossible for us to continue to operate all of our services,…”. Six other rural hospitals in Nebraska will probably also close. A total of 760 rural hospitals, many in “red” states”, will also risk closure due to the Medicaid cuts.
The American health care system is broken. And the MAGA House and Senate will make it worse. What are the chances the Dems can retake control of House next year? Their chances have just be enhanced by DJT’s bill.
Now you say you “truly love” the 4th of July because “it really celebrates what we have in common, rather that what divides us”. Apparently DJT didn’t get your memo. At a rally today in Des Moines, Iowa DJT couldn’t waste a chance to attack the Dems for voting against his bill: “They wouldn’t vote only because they hate Trump, but I hate them, too, you know? I really do. I hate them. I cannot stand them, because I really believe they hate our country”. Never could accuse DJT of being a uniter. Even when he wins he hates!

Today we had the pleasure of once again to visit Colonial Williamsburg to celebrate July 4th. The heat was intense when not in the shade, and the sun was unrelenting, but the crowds were at full capacity on the grounds of Colonial Williamsburg. The highpoint was at Noon for the reading of the Declaration of Independence as written by Thomas Jefferson, re-enacted by actors portraying the period from the Courthouse Steps.

It was moving to watch the actors give their rendition of that moment in time. We gathered with thousands at Williamsburg where the public was invited to participate in cheering for the United States.
From there we walked the grounds, visited the shops, interacted with guests and asked questions to the various period actors. We left because the heat zapped our energy but all in all, it was a marvelous way to celebrate America’s July 4th with apparently thousands of other patriotic Americans who came in all shapes, sizes, colors, ethnicities and yes, even a few folks wearing the traditional rainbow flags. If any Democrats were present, they dared not utter their inanities, knowing the crowds would have not put up with their anti-American shtick.
