The Passing of Professor Turley’s Mother

Angela Turley

Some readers have noticed the interruption in new postings on this blog and social media. Due to the passing of his mother, Angela Piazza Turley, 97, in Chicago, Professor Turley has been spending this time with his family. He expects to resume writing sometime this week.

Professor Turley dedicated his book, The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage, to his mother who was a social worker and former president of Jane Addams Hull House in Chicago. In his dedication, he wrote “to my mother, Angela Piazza Turley, who taught me that life is an unyielding passionate pursuit of justice.”

  1. Condolences to Professor Turley. One is never truly ready for the passing of a family member, no matter how expected that event might be. However, he may be able to take some solace from the fact that 97 qualifies as a ripe, old age, and (probably) indicates a life well and thoroughly lived.

  2. Thank you to your mother for raising a magnificent scholar and wise orator. May her memories forever be a blessing.

  3. We are so sorry to hear this news. Mrs Turley certainly raised a wonderful son.

  4. Words are never enough. The memories of your Mother will bring you comfort when the words are gone. Memories are G-d’s blessing.

Although this poem is usually for aviators, I always thought of our mothers. We are in their hands from our first breath and we are under their wings as they mold us with their love until they move on to god. We continue to dance in the clouds as a tribute to them and their love.

    High Flight
“Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
    And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of – wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air….

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace.
Where never lark, or even eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
    – Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.”

    John Gillespie Magee Jr.

  7. Angela welcomed my fiance and I to SMOL 25 years ago. She pinned on my wedding corsage. It was the beginning of my becoming a catholic. A wonderful woman of faith. We will pray for her and for your entire family as you find Gods comfort
