The Passing of Professor Turley’s Mother

Angela Turley

Some readers have noticed the interruption in new postings on this blog and social media. Due to the passing of his mother, Angela Piazza Turley, 97, in Chicago, Professor Turley has been spending this time with his family. He expects to resume writing sometime this week.

Professor Turley dedicated his book, The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage, to his mother who was a social worker and former president of Jane Addams Hull House in Chicago. In his dedication, he wrote “to my mother, Angela Piazza Turley, who taught me that life is an unyielding passionate pursuit of justice.”

  1. A loss at any age. May your mother rest in peace and her love for you sustain you and your family at this time.

  2. NB:

The comments by individuals, presumably lurkers, on the death of Professor Turley’s mother, have been beautiful. Professor Turley likely has been touched and encouraged by these comments. The majority of the comments have come from a religious place, confirming what many of us have stated many times: America was created by a religious people for a religious people. Professor Turley has commented over the years that he had a Catholic upbringing and married a Jewish wife. Many have traveled that path and kept both religious traditions alive, e.g. Viktor Emil Frankl & Eleonore Katharina Schwindt both attended church and synagogue. Perhaps with the passing of his mother, the Turleys can revisit the role of religion in their world, and reassess whether Catholicism / Judaism should continue to be excommunicated from their lives, or embraced with humility, appreciation and acknowledgement that something bigger than us exists. St. Augustine of Hippo stated it best in his Confessions:

cor nostrum inquietum est donec requiescat in Te
our hearts are restless until they rest in You

Estovir, I wasn’t quite sure what you meant by “continue to be excommunicated.” I hadn’t thought of Turley as having turned away from religion, only that he doesn’t speak much about it. From past remarks, I assumed he believed in God. Are you suggesting he actively distanced himself from Catholicism and Judaism? Or were you speaking more generally?

  3. blessed, blessed indeed to have a mother that loves you dearly. It’s so obvious.

and blessed, blessed indeed that we have a good steward of critically important issues and values, that is you Jonathan.

May God continue to bless you and yours.

I have no social media. I’m simply a retired paralegal who lives in NYC. I came to that profession later in life.

I often look to your postings to see what is what going on in law these days.

Take this time to be with your family.
May your mother’s memory be a blessing.
