Italy Rediscovers National Identity in Fight With EU Court

In my forthcoming book, Rage and the Republic: The Unfinished Story of the American Revolution, I discuss the threat posed by transnational governance, particularly with regard to the European Union. Now, Italy appears to be rediscovering its national identity in a growing fight with the Strasbourg-based European Court of Justice (ECJ). The court just blocked Italy from enforcing its own immigration laws to combat the flood of undocumented persons in the country. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has called the ruling an attack on national sovereignty.

The case was brought by two Bangladeshi illegal migrants who were being removed from the country and sent to an asylum processing centre in Albania. The EU member states can only determine safe countries for the return of migrants if they provide evidence and allow for judicial review. It found that the relocations by Italy “do not offer sufficient protection to their entire population.”

Former International Criminal Court magistrate Cuno Tarfusser observed that, under the decision, undocumented persons would merely have to declare themselves as being LGBT or a persecuted religious minority, and their removal would easily be blocked.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said:

“This is a development that should concern everyone – including the political forces that today celebrate the ruling – because it further reduces the already limited margins of autonomy for Governments and Parliaments in shaping the normative and administrative direction of the migration phenomenon. The Court’s decision weakens policies aimed at countering mass illegal immigration and defending national borders.”

I have long been a critic of the EU’s expanding efforts to project its power not just across but outside Europe. That includes threatening American companies that they must comply with EU censorship laws or face confiscatory fines.

Articles 34 and 35 of the infamous Digital Services Act require all sites to identify, assess, and mitigate “systemic risks” posed by content, including any threats to “civic discourse”, “electoral processes,” and “public health.” It is up to the EU to define and judge such categories in terms of compliance.

The act bars speech that is viewed as “disinformation” or “incitement.” European Commission Executive Vice President Margrethe Vestager celebrated its passage by declaring that it is “not a slogan anymore, that what is illegal offline should also be seen and dealt with as illegal online. Now it is a real thing. Democracy’s back.”

Some in this country have turned to the EU to force the censorship of their fellow citizens. After Elon Musk bought Twitter and dismantled most of the company’s censorship program, many on the left went bonkers. That fury only increased when Musk released the “Twitter files,” confirming the long-denied coordination and support by the government in targeting and suppressing speech.

In response, Hillary Clinton and other Democratic figures turned to Europe and called upon them to use their Digital Services Act to force censorship against Americans. (Clinton spoke at the World Forum and lashed out at the failure to control disinformation.)

The EU immediately responded by threatening Musk with confiscatory penalties against not just his company but himself. He would have to resume massive censorship or else face ruin.

At the recent Berlin conference, the World Forum heralded the slogan “A New World Order With European Values.” It was an expression of the globalized model of governance, a move that directly challenges core principles of democracy and national sovereignty. Countries like Italy are now facing the reality of such transnational governance as European courts and legislation negate national priorities and regulations.

  1. Meloni should tell judges to take a hike. These two Bangladeshi skipped whole bunch of safe countries before entering Italy, so they do no qualify to apply for asylum to begin with. Let alone, contesting vacations in Albania.

  2. Sadly, Meloni is a sunshine patriot. Riding in on an election where she promised independence from Brussles, she quickly was made to tow the line following every prescription for national suicide. She was an EU feather in the wind. With sentiment building against her internally, she was dragged kicking and screaming to her new-found position. Let’s see if she’s as dogged now.

  3. “Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has called the ruling an attack on national sovereignty.” (JT)

She should tell the ECJ to pound sand.

What are they going to do? Scold her? Tsk, tsk her? The ECJ has no police powers.

  4. Europe has doomed itself to become an Islamic Caliphate.

‘Strangers in own country’: Muslim students outnumber ethnic Austrians in Vienna

41.2% of students identify as Muslim, 34.5% as Christian
Teachers quitting, exodus of ethnic Austrian families in Vienna

For the first time in Vienna’s history, ethnic Austrians are poised to become a minority in the city’s elementary schools, with new figures revealing that Muslim pupils now outnumber all other religious groups.

According to official data from the city’s school council, 41.2 per cent of students in Vienna’s elementary schools identify as Muslim, compared to 34.5 per cent identifying as Christian.

The statistics, which also show German is increasingly a second language in many classrooms, have ignited heated political debate and raised concerns about integration, language barriers, and educational standards.

    1. The Muslim invasion has a simple plan: demographics. To conquer a non-Muslim democracy – breed your way to a majority.

  5. Wait. Wasn’t Meloni supposed to be the fascist? Seems she’s the Churchill of this European generation. Seems as though the EU seeks to finish what the Nazis started. This is not going anywhere pretty.

  6. Is this the new norm of MAGA? Mock those who mourn those who have been killed?

Cruz, who on Friday reposted a photo of Hochul at the funeral with the caption, “Um, wut?”

Cruz is an A Hole just like his orange god. Why do you mock those that mourn the dead?

    1. Get bent loser. Your trite characterizations are just lame. MAGA MAGA MAGA. Get some new material.

  7. I haven’t flown since maybe 2009. The Patriot Act DHS TSA thing is very wrong and very disappointing. Shameful, even.

If that shite ever gets cleaned up I would like to visit Europe. And when I visit I would like to meet Italian people in Italy, French people in France, Brits in England, German people in Germany… If I want to see burkas I’d go to burkaland. Islam is a problem for Europe and the EU is the heart if it. The US is not so far behind. Tolerance is overrated and suicidal.

  8. *. Obama wasted 17 years of our lives that can’t be reclaimed and he’s still wasting lives. Many have few years left. What a great injustice.

Get serious about this. Do what is right. There aren’t lives to waste.

  9. World War 2 was a waste of some perfectly good white boys.
I wonder what the world would be like today if they had all lived.

    1. World War I and II were a single 31-years conflict. It took Europe over 1,000 years to build the greatest culture the world has ever seen. Think of its art, classical music, literature, and progress in the sciences. Then that culture was destroyed in 30 years, and the continued destruction comes in its “strange suicide” as it feels guilty for having killed so many of its own in wars that need not have happened (since there was no real cause for WWI other than the nations kept arming to the teeth and then attacked lest they be attacked first).

Now Europe is committing suicide, willingly letting itself become an Islamic caliphate because of its personal feelings of guilt over the 31-years-war of 1914-1945. It is willingly letting itself be consumed by a great shroud of darkness, and all its achievements snuffed out. America is the last bastion.

      1. Yes, and the world was moving toward a nuclear war, saved by the exit of Biden and the entrance of Trump. The splintering and dysfunction under Biden resemble the early chaos before World War I, and we are not yet out of the danger zone he created. The other threat, Radical Islam, is real. I am not saying peaceful Muslims are bad; they are not. But the radical form is a danger in a nuclear world, especially where so many in the West refuse to face reality.

Let me talk about Jerusalem. It was never central to Islam. During 19 years of Jordanian control, it remained largely ignored. Its importance in Islam grew from a political rivalry between Damascus and Mecca, not from religious tradition.

So why Jerusalem? Because it is central to Judaism and also to the Christian world, extending wherever radical Islam tries to assert itself. That is why the destruction of other religious symbols from other religions, Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, and other religions, is not accidental. It is necessary for their dominance. We saw this clearly when the Taliban destroyed ancient Buddhist statues, and we’ve seen it elsewhere across the world. Erasing the past of others is part of their path to supremacy

      2. *. Civilization was geographically quite limited wasn’t it. Now the great hordes of the 3rd worlds are exposed. We are able to see now that Civilization was perhaps 20% of the nations and their people? It was and isn’t a very developed world at all.

        Quite an eye opener.

  10. The EU also told the Rolling Stones that they had to sound more like the Beatles or face sanctions and censorship.

  11. I saw a comment printed on a tee shirt the other day which seems to capture the times we find ourselves in. It read “ I wish Orwell would go back to being fiction.” The best humor includes a bit of truth.

  12. “the World Forum heralded the slogan “A New World Order With European Values.”

So basically the Fourth Reich. Soon to be Judenfrei.

Trump is right to crush “European Values.” No more Chamberlains when dealing with these scorpions.

  13. I had a very bad experience with a black man today.
All of that crying about past oppression makes
me think that they did something to bring it on themselves.
Go ahead. Burn crosses in their yards. I don’t care.
After what I experienced, I wouldn’t mind seeing a night of broken glass against them.

    1. Report this problem to the tribal chiefs who sold their ancestors to the Arab slave traders, who in turn sold them to British shippers, who in turn sold them to British planters.

Perhaps those parties would be interested in providing reparations and funding compassionate repatriation, understanding that the fondest desire of abductees is to return home.

      1. God knows we have gotten payback for our sins one hundred times over. All we need now is Muslims to finish the job!

        1. On January 1, 1863, immigrants were required to be “free white person(s)” or deported.

    2. I understand why you are posting anonymously. Hope this is some kind of satire posting that I’m just not getting.

  14. My concern is that the EU, dismayed that the USA has not bent the knee to the globalists and their agenda, decides that actually free countries are a threat and decides to openly ally with communist countries like China, Russia, or North Korea and out and out wages war on the free world. That Clinton and her ilk have run to them is telling in all that it implies regarding her and her associations. I really do think our dems expected to coast by and continue to steam roll us.

Outlandish, perhaps, but cautionary, and I know those types of alliances already exist to a degree, and it could get real ugly, real fast. The EU and the UN no longer represent anything resembling freedom or sanity, and the more European countries waking up and breaking ranks, the better. And we should get out altogether, stat, IMO.

  15. Enough!
