The Green Party Calls for the Abolishment of Private Landlords in the United Kingdom

On Sunday, the Green Party in the United Kingdom voted to “abolish” private landlords in a move that reaffirms the party as a largely socialist movement. For some environmentalists, it is a sad hijacking of a cause by far-left elements that moves it away from its original environmental priorities.

The motion passed at the Greens’ conference in Bournemouth calls for the  “effective abolition of private landlordism.”

That would impact roughly three million people in Britain who rent out properties, including at least one high-ranking Green official, Adrian Ramsay, who is one of the Greens’ four MPs.

Ramsay insisted that he is not making a profit on his rental and would soon stop being a landlord.

The Green Party is committed to effectively eliminating private landlords through rent controls, a “land value tax,” and other means.

The move is reminiscent of Zohran Mamdani’s call to seize unoccupied luxury condos in New York and give them to the homeless. He has also called for Democratic Socialists to “seize the means of production” in America.

Ironically, this week former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo called out Mamdani for hypocrisy as a landlord of vacant valuable land in Uganda.

The Green Party motion states:

‘The private rental sector has failed, it is a vehicle for wealth extraction, funnelling money from renters to the landlord class…

This motion makes it clear that Green Party policy is to seek the effective abolition of private landlordism and to support the building of council housing.

…The Green Party believes the existence of private landlords adds no positive value to the economy or society, that the relationship between landlord and tenant is inherently and intrinsically extractive and exploitative.”

Carla Denyer, Green MP for Bristol Central, insists that the call to end private landlords as “inherently and intrinsically extractive and exploitative” does not actually mean an outright ban: “While the motion to confidence had an eye-catching name, it does not actually ‘abolish’ landlords.”

Once again, the Green Party has been steadily moving toward an openly socialist agenda, leaving many environmentalists at odds with the party.

Polls show that socialism is now more popular than capitalism in Great Britain, with a shocking increase in favor of communism.

  1. Private landlords operate under the sword of consumer choice, which bestows a degree of power to renters. Public landlords operate with impunity, leaving renters absolutely powerless. Doesn’t sound very progressive.

    1. Ah, free market competition. The answer. The only answer. Natural and God-given rights, freedoms, privileges, and immunities.

      Hear, hear!

  2. Turley quotes polls that apparently show that socialism is more popular than capitalism in the UK.
However, he completely fails to understand that the British concept of “socialism” is not the Marxist, communist concept that is held in the US
In the UK socialism means free basic health care, subsidized public transportation, subsidized housing for the poor, generous welfare and disability care for those unable to care for themselves.

The concept of socialism in the UK is most definitely not the extreme leftist idea that comes to the mind of Americans.

In some ways the social system in the UK is an example of extreme capitalism. Take for example the National Health Service that provides free basic healthcare and free prescription medications. The NHS is able to purchase prescription medications from American companies at 20% of the prices that Americans pay.
Why is that you may ask ???

Well, the NHS is the only purchaser of prescription medicines in the UK. There are a very few private companies and private health insurers that purchase, but the quantity is miniscule. The NHS is such a large purchaser that it can drive down the prices asked by manufacturers. They simply tell drug companies what they are willing to pay and tell them take it or leave it and the companies take it.
This is the ultimate form of capitalism where multiple suppliers are competing for the business of a single customer.
    Competition drives down prices.
    The purest form of capitalism.

    2. “In the UK socialism means free basic health care, subsidized public transportation, subsidized housing for the poor, generous welfare and disability care for those unable to care for themselves.”

      Paid for by whom?

  3. HOW can we get the masses to understand there is NOTHING GOOD ABOUT SOCIALISM at all! It is very dangerous, and is responsible for death , destruction, poverty and starvation all over the world.

  4. Just look at what happened in Seattle several years ago when the city politicians made it so unattractive for small investors to own rental property that the single family dwelling rental market contracted by 50% in one year. It was one of the main reasons that single family rental property owners were motivated to sell off, which coincided with the the additional inducement that of the housing market being a seller’s market and interest rates were still low. The ability to rent a house subsequently was cut in half and the supply was low so prices remained high for tenants, due to this and the fact that the remaining landlords often wanted higher rent to make it worth their while to stay in the market due to the regulatory cost and the higher risks associated with the rules. The prices have corrected downward a bit recently, possibly also due to lower demand for rentals.

A few years later, Washington’s politicians adopted many of the Seatte type regulations. More small landlords left the market and many developers decided to invest in other states. And of course the same politicians are now griping that there is not enough affordable housing for tenants. If you want to invest in rental property, you are better off doing so in other states.

    1. Completely irrelevant and nonsensical comment from a Mindless MAGA Mobster.
There is absolutely no chance of the Green policy ever coming to fruition.

The Greens hold 4 seats in Parliament out of 650 seats, or 0.6%.
They are a completely irrelevant fringe party.
This piece is just a deliberate attempt by Turley to stoke the rage that he so roundly criticizes.
      Total hypocrisy !!!!

      1. No, this is not an “attempt by Turley to stoke the rage” — it is an attempt to warn, to sound the alarm: these “greens” are in earnest, and their influence starts with mere “irrelevant” opposition and audacity; then it grows, and then it’s a threat. Yours is the non-nonsensical and mindless position.

    2. I concur, witnessed the Seattle diaspora to; Tacoma, Spokane, Bellingham, Vancouver Can., Kelowna Can., …
“Head for the Hills” as they say.

S.F. Bay Area was no different.

The; Banker, Brokers, and Rentier’s have past the People’s breaking point.

Unfortunately that’s how it goes, time after time … and it is deliberate, be there no mistake about that.

    3. Darren, that is very similar to the NYC housing crisis of the 1970s. If you know the details of NYC, how much does it mirror what happened in NY? I don’t know enough about Seattle.

In NYC, builders stopped building almost entirely, causing a crunch, along with about 100,000 units turned back to the city. When they started rebuilding, they built condominiums that many formerly living in the city could not afford. That was a double whammy on future tenants.

      1. S. Meyer, the NYC housing crisis was part of a nationwide housing crisis in the 70’s. It was also during the time Real estate speculators were engaging in fraud and inflating prices thereby keeping most housing out of reach for many. Affordable housing was in short supply because of corruption in the city as well. In the 70’s housing discrimination was a big thing. Trump benefitted from that when he discriminated against black folks by denying them housing they were perfectly qualified to obtain. It was dirty landlords like Trump who made things worse at the time.

        1. George Svelaz, once again, I have to refer to you as a fool. You think you know everything, but know almost nothing.

You lump a bunch of things together, hoping to hit the target, but you fail as usual. The housing catastrophe that happened in NYC is well-documented and discussed in numerous places. I know it well and remember.

” Trump benefitted from that when he discriminated against black folks by denying them housing they were perfectly qualified to obtain. It was dirty landlords like Trump who made things worse at the time.”

Trump benefitted, because he invested in the city when few did. If you want to rate landlords in NYC, you can drop him from that dirty list. He was one of the cleanest. I discussed the racism complaints in the past. Take note of the fact that in the end, neither NYC nor the feds could hang anything on him. He was targeted because he was high profile, and the problems were known because he didn’t fold like the many others.

You are too stupid to deal with.

Viva la United Kingdom’s Revolution 🇬🇧

Welcome to the United Kingdom of Euro-Mexico !

    The Mexican Revolution (1910-1920) 🇲🇽
Peasants were the driving force behind the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920), fighting for land reform under leaders like Emiliano Zapata and Pancho Villa to reclaim land stolen by wealthy landowners under the dictatorship of Porfirio Díaz. The revolution transformed from a national struggle into a grassroots movement as peasants, fed up with poverty and indentured servitude, organized and fought for their communities’ rights and better living conditions, ultimately leading to the inclusion of a land reform clause in the 1917 Constitution and the creation of the ejido system for land distribution.
    Conditions Leading to Peasant Uprising

    Land Concentration:
Wealthy landowners, with the support of the dictator Porfirio Díaz, accumulated vast amounts of land at the expense of Indigenous communities and poor peasants.

    Forced Labor:
Many peasants were trapped in indentured servitude, owing debts to landlords and forced to buy goods on credit at inflated prices, making escape nearly impossible.

    Dispossession of Indigenous Lands:
The concentration of land included the seizure of traditional Indigenous farmland, which prompted leaders like Zapata to organize to reclaim it.

    Key Peasant Leaders and Movements

    Emiliano Zapata:
A peasant leader in Morelos, Zapata led the Southern Liberation Army, fighting for the redistribution of land seized by hacienda owners. His movement focused on the motto “Tierra y Libertad” (Land and Liberty).

    Pancho Villa:
A leader in northern Mexico, Villa organized an army of working-class people to fight for dignity and better living conditions. He was seen as a “Robin Hood” figure for taking from the rich and giving to the poor.

    Impact of Peasant Involvement

    Grassroots Movement:
The involvement of peasants transformed the national revolution into a powerful grassroots movement driven by their struggle for fundamental rights.

    Land Reform (Ejido System):
The constant pressure from peasant uprisings led to the inclusion of land reform in the 1917 Constitution, establishing the ejido system. This system allowed for the assignment of individual and communal plots of public land to peasant farmers.

    Social Change:
The revolution’s focus on the needs of the poor and the creation of the ejido system led to widespread land redistribution, though the full realization of these goals evolved over decades.

  6. It’s that slow, silent, insidious, almost impalpable creep into our lives and lifestyles that makes it so dangerous.

And such alluring and innocent messaging!
Real/actual protest posters: “Justice for All!” “Equity and Equality!” “DEI!” “Reparations!” “Social Justice!” “Black Lives Matter!” “No Kings!” “Open Borders!” “NO Borders!” “Make a Difference!” “Workers of the World!” “We Stand Together!” “Solidarity!” “You Cannot Serve Both God and Money!” “Eat the Rich, Abolish the Police!” “Unity of the Revolution!” “Left is the New Right!” and……(for renters)….. “This Land Was Made for You and Me!”

No wonder our younger and vulnerable generations, -wanting to make the world a better place (as their parents taught them) are confused and willing.

      1. See no evil, hear no evil, said [insipid] Swallow-X to the other swallows:

“This fable, attributed to Aesop, reflects ancient Greek moral teachings that emphasize the importance of heeding wise counsel and the dangers of neglecting preventative actions. It has been retold through various cultures, reinforcing the universal theme that ignoring early warnings can lead to dire consequences, a lesson illustrated through the metaphor of sowing seeds that may later become detrimental if left unchecked. The story serves as a cautionary tale about foresight and the importance of vigilance against potential threats.”

      2. “Lin, Or…you’re being a bit paranoid. As a lawyer you should know better.”

George Svelaz, there is no “Or… you’re” being ignorant and ignoring definitions. If you passed fifth grade you should know better.

    1. Spot on Lin, as a lawyer you do know! It’s the corruption that is aiding their attempted coup, it’s disenfranchising people from their own government. Bringing these criminals to justice in their Grand conspiracy would correct our course immediately.

After all, our Constitution only serves a moral and just nation.

  7. Plus this issue for UK

  8. What is truly shocking is Professor Turley’s naivety. He is either truly naive or he’s just putting on a narrative for conservatives to rage about. He even threw in Mamdani for good measure to get the rage juices flowing for the right.

I guess he decided to blow past the quote, “ While the motion to confidence had an eye-catching name, it does not actually ‘abolish’ landlords.”

Obviously, this is a party declaration that has no chance of ever being put into law. It does make for a handy headline to stoke conservative rage. Professor Turley loves to rail against rage rhetoric and lament the “age of rage” while simultaneously stoking it for the benefit of his conservative and MAGA readers.

    1. If it has no chance to ever being put into law why make it a “party declaration”? Many laws that were in the past not considered to ever been enacted have been enacted later on.. and why not bring Mamdani into the article that is discussing communist ideas, the oxymoronic Democratic Socialist belongs in any conversation that discusses communism.

      1. Why not? It’s their right. As foolish as it sounds it’s their prerogative.

Mamdani is not a communist. What is wrong with discussing communist ideas anyway. President Trump discusses totalitarian ideas all the time. Does that make him a totalitarian?

Demoratic socialism is different than communism. Bernie Sanders is a Democratic socialist yet nobody is accusing him of being a communist. The only reason I think many call him a communist or Marxist is because of his name. The majority on this blog don’t know the difference between Communism, Marxism, and Socialism. To them they are just interchangeable labels to insult and smear.

        1. Marx modified his stance in later years, and that is why he started to use socialism differently than earlier on when socialism=communism. The best I can understand is that in later years, socialism was still on the way to communism

“Bernie Sanders is a Democratic socialist yet nobody is accusing him of being a communist.”

Bernie Sanders is a socialist, on the way to communism.

Once again, you display your ignorance.

          1. S. Meyer, you’re way off buddy.

“Socialism is still on the way to communism”

What was Karl Marx’s stance S. Meyer in your own words?

Was Karl Marx a Communist or Socialist?

“Bernie Sanders is a socialist, on the way to communism.”

Wrong. Bernie Sanders is Democratic Socialist, not a Socialist. Those are two different things. Mamdani is a Democratic Socialist yet you call him a Communist.

A Socialist is not a Communist.

You don’t understand the differences and that is why you like many here conflate the three Marxist, Communist, and Socialist as the same. They are not. You’re displaying your ignorance.

            1. “What was Karl Marx’s stance S. Meyer in your own words?”

I already did above. “Marx modified his stance in later years, and that is why he started to use socialism differently than earlier on when socialism=communism. The best I can understand is that in later years, socialism was still on the way to communism.”

“Was Karl Marx a Communist or Socialist?”

              He was a Marxist.

You can call Bernie Sanders anything you wish, but what you say is meaningless and ignorant.

“A Socialist is not a Communist.”

That depends on the time period.

You are a dummy and do not understand the common link of all three and how they diverged. If anyone wants to see total unmitigated ignorance, you are on display.

            2. “You’re displaying your ignorance.”

              Nice projection and smear.

You keep making that assertion — yet haven’t once explained or given an *argument* for why you think their explanations are wrong.

Until you explain what those differences are, your replies to others remain: Mindless insults.

        2. Well, X, what DON’T you like about communism? Surely not the murdering and mob mentality?
Mr. smartypants here thinks he’s teaching us something…about the DIFFERENCES between all the murderous ideologies.

        3. “The majority on this blog don’t know the difference between . . .”

Do you? Are you ever going to explain those differences? Or are you going to continue evading the question?

Here’s my suspicion: Yet again, you have no idea what you’re talking about. And you’re using this issue as a cudgel.

          1. “And [George X] you’re using this issue as a cudgel”.

George X doesn’t know what the word “cudgel” means. He will need to look up that word as well.

    2. @X

Oh, George. Tsk, tsk. I would say surely you have something better to do, but clearly that is not the case, at any time on any day of the week. Sad.

    3. Your projection about “rage” is off topic and irrelevant SWALLOW-X. Deal with the warning and future potential, already knocking at the door!

Khrushchev said, “Нравится вам или нет, но история на нашей стороне. Мы вас похороним.”
“Whether you like it or not, but history is on our side. We will bury you.” Khrushchev meant that History was on the side of Communism and it would eventually “bury” (end) Capitalism, giving way to Socialism/Communism.

—Swallow-X, you are the kind of useful-idiot liberal that will make sure Khrushchev’s words are realized.

  9. Maurice Strong, a communist, created the modern environmentalist movement. The movement has always been green on the outside and red on the inside.

  10. Oh, wonderful! So the UK is moving steadily toward both communism and Islamism, at the same time.

It does occur to me to wonder what their military will do with their nuclear arsenal the day before they become a caliphate.

  11. Hell, Reagan might as well have just moved the Berlin wall to the west side of Ireland and saved us all the trouble of waiting until the pernicious and lethal virus known as communism took over Europe (via their pseudo-intellectual, woke, elite).

  12. There was a post here the other day about Mamdani and his proposed sacking of gifted programs, and now a story about socialism/communism. There is a link:

  13. I guess the UK is jumping on-board the Marxist band wagon with both feet. Biggest mistake these people made was giving up their guns. They might want to read up on Solzhenitsyn and sharpen up some those farm implements.

    1. Sarcasm: BTeboe – right idea, wrong author. We are already reading Walter Duranty’s series of articles to hide Stalin’s mass murders and starvation as propagated by the Soviet “deep-state”, which is still thriving even if temporarily furloughed in the Great Swamp (Washington Metropolitan Area). The resultant Pulitzer Prize for this initiative motivates “journalism” (don’t say that word in front of children – obscene). Only ours are funded and published by the Wealthy Elite Autocrats who ruled the Presidential Autopen for the previous 4 years and the dancing puppets whose masters have been CCP and Russia since 2008 year. All hail to Arabella, ActBlue, OSF, . . . Their spewing rage identifying enemies by categories (eg. Fascists, White Racists, MAGA, . . . ) thinly veils whose actual actions are tyrannical power and fear completely absent of any democracy.

  14. Of course Turley very conveniently neglects to mention that the Greens hold precisely 4 seats in the House of Commons, out of 650 seats.
So the Greens represent 0.6% of the people of the UK. They are a fringe party.
99.4% of the people do not support the Greens, but Turley is trying to spin a story that the entire country is going Marxist.

He is just shoveling chum to the Mindless MAGA Mob to keep then agitated again, and they fall for it hook, line and sinker.

    1. I guess you missed this part.

  15. Just watched a video on Mozambique, a country ruined by Communists. At least they are honest enough to put an AK-47 on their flag.

  16. Green is dead. The big players have move six steps to the left to alternate forms of societal control. It’s all leftist politics these days for the principals, AOC, Greta Thunberg, Greens Party, Britain’s Labor, Gavin Newsom, the whole schmear of them. Elderly gents like John Kerry and Al Gore hang on to green.

  17. The Green Party has showed great affinity with the Russians for awhile…, that’s why they signed on with his efforts in getting trump elected in ’16. Jill Stein was planted to split the D vote. And it worked.

Then the Green party gave us Krysten Sinema, a senator who proved quite on par with standard R corruption at the senate level.

Just curious when you’re going to flip on Durham to get your Magat Phuckington base snarling, Turls? Seeing how you and Nrwscorp also work for the Russians.

  18. The Mother Country crossed the Rubicon a long time ago post-Thatcher. There’s no coming back. Best hope is that they don’t go full Soviet

    1. @whig98

Agreed. Britain is lost, just a question of how far they’ll go. It’s like the cold war never happened. Of course, to the largely young Green constituency, it may as well not have. They insist on learning the hard way.

      1. It will be too late when Brit’s are legally killed off by Islamic immigrants for slights against Islam. They all ready have carte blanche to put British children in the slave trade.
Soon they will control the military and its nuclear weapons. Western Europe will look to Russia for a bailout at any price.

      1. @Dustoff

Agreed. Forget about Islam for a moment; when people are shivering and hungry, as they were in the USSR, that’ll be the trigger. I’m sure the Greens/Labour are made up of the same, young, sheltered, and privileged fools our socialists are, stateside. This is generational. It pains me greatly to watch them make mistakes the world has already learned from at far too high a cost, and not that long ago. There is no cure for stupid, and apparently, there is no cure for the bad or lack of education at home or at school, or both, of the past 30 or so years. At the very least in the 16 years since Obama rose to prominence. the modern DNC is not representative of a political party, and the cries of ‘oligarchy’, are frankly, hilarious, considering the sources.

    2. Ughh, whig98, guessing you never watch the PBC (Philby Broadcasting Company), [oops I meant BBC(British Broadcasting Company)]. State press is already there. For humor, watch BBC America.
