AFGE Union Calls on Democrats to End Shutdown

In what Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) has reportedly called a possible game-changer, the American Federation of Government Employees union is demanding that Democrats end the government shutdown. Reporter Burgess Everett, Congressional Bureau Chief for Semafor,  posted “Sen. Durbin, No. 2 Democrat, says AFGE calling for end to shutdown ‘has a lot of impact.'”

According to Burgess, Durbin went on to say:

“It’s something we will be discussing this week. I’m not announcing any change in my position at this time. They’re our friends. We take them seriously.’ Says he’d support bills to pay SNAP and air traffic controllers.”

The AFGE, the largest union in the country representing federal employees, has joined Republicans in calling on Democrats to vote for a clean continuing resolution (CR).

Everett Kelley, AFGE’s national president, wrote:

“Today I’m making mine: it’s time to pass a clean continuing resolution and end this shutdown today. No half measures, and no gamesmanship. Put every single federal worker back on the job with full back pay — today.”

The unions, with their massive political war chests, cannot be ignored by Democratic members. This is the largest government employee union and represents an overwhelmingly Democratic base of union members. It is also ominous for Democrats with many federal workers going to the polls this week in the closer-than-expected elections in Virginia.

  1. When is the GOP-controlled Congress going to IMPEACH a godamm corrupt district court judge starting w Boassburg?
Who cares if there aren’t Senate votes?
Haul these lawless judges in before Congress to shine the bright lights on them and make them defend their actions under oath and in public.
DO SOMETHING you pathetic useless spineless toads.

    1. No courtesy letters inviting any of these Democrat/Biden admin officials and corrupt judges to testify.
You send them a subpoena right off the bat.
      Then enforce it.
      Contempt will be prosecuted.
      Lying will be prosecuted.
Either will result in actual prison time.

He’s truly lawless, highly partisan, and dangerous.

Glad the Senate Republicans are finally onboard.’

HAUL CORRUPT DC JUDGE BOASSBURG in front of Congress to shine BRIGHT LIGHTS ON HIS CORRUPTION!!! Now!!!

  2. The radical left say the shutdown is about healthcare. Maybe, however, this is something different. They currently have no desire or ability to create viable, common sense solutions to complex problems. The Democratic Left is about raw power and a common, irrational hatred of our current President and it seems, our country.

Why else do they embrace insanity? Open the border and foist 15 million more foreigners on us. Why is there a housing shortage? Healthcare provider shortage? Overwhelmed schools? etc. A flood of hardened criminals? Soft in criminals? The list is virtually endless.

These people are truly crazy. So, yes, they did a 180 and ignored their many speeches on the harm of shutdowns and did it. Then they deployed psychological warfare and flooded the zone with propaganda and copious amounts of gaslighting.

  3. Rabble:
Positing my 2 cents. The longer this goes on, the more resentment we will see from the armed forces.
Why? I am an instructor for the Navy. Since mid-September, minimal orders for sailors leaving their “A” school to go to their first seagoing commands have been cut, meaning most are stuck here until the civilian admin specialists can get un-furloughed. I only heard today that one class got their orders, which is slow as hell.
This can be extrapolated, meaning sailors out in the fleet are also not having orders cut, meaning they can’t go to their next commands either, or worse, can’t exit the armed forces because no one is able to route their DD-214’s and other papers beyond their local commands. It is beyond screwed, and the Navy only has one Personnel Specialist command at this point, meaning most commands use civilian support, which is nonexistent as long as they are furloughed.

  4. Democrats are enablers of our broken health care system.

Healthcare is a diseased sector of our economy where the prices are intentionally obscured and the customer is never right.

Subsidies for Wealthy Americans and Insurance Companies

    * Nearly all Obamacare premium tax credit (PTC) dollars constitute direct spending going to large health insurers, like UnitedHealthcare – not patients. Over $100 billion of the annual spending goes directly to large health insurers.

    * The PTC is the largest refundable tax credit in the tax code and over 83 percent of it is direct subsidy spending, not offsetting any owed taxes.

    * Extending the “Biden Covid Credits” is a $400 billion giveaway to insurance companies – not tax relief for American families. These are the same corporations that health care providers criticize for underpayments and excessive prior authorization practices.

    https://waysandmeans.house.gov/2025/10/20/democrats-failed-health-care-policies-protect-subsidies-for-wealthy-americans-and-insurance-companies/

All Americans have personally experienced year after year an increase in their health insurance premiums, lower coverage of both health care services and pharmaceutical products (Rxs), absurd prior authorization requests and the dreadful PBMs (pharmacy benefit managers) that are largely owned by large health insurance companies. The 3 largest PBMs in the U.S. are CVS Caremark, Cigna Express Scripts, and UnitedHealth Group’s Optum Rx, which together control the lions share of the market. When I started in medicine, steerage of prescriptions was illegal. PBMs are steerage of Rxs par excellence. The PBMs are a scandal beyond compare, and yet, Congress allows their practice to continue.

They don’t care because Members of Congress have health care coverage that is the Cadillac coverage of all times. Chuck Schumer wouldn’t know what any of these burdens are because he doesn’t have to deal with them. All of the Democrats voting for the shutdown of the federal government, are detached from the American experience of US health care.

It was only recently that Chuck Schumer and his wife received preferential treatment in 2022 during COVID at N.Y.U. Langone Medical Center Emergency Room, cutting in front of everyone else.

    1. ..don’t forget all the FRAUD with the COVID ‘loan’ funds.. the literally $Billions lost to people who created shell companies to obtain funds or used their companies to do so.. like the mega millionaire Realtor in Los Angeles who took COVID relief money for his RE company which he did not have to pay back.. so many stories of Abuse……

  5. 800,000 union federal workers going to the polls without a paycheck. That’s an interesting strategy Shakedown Schumer. 42 million SANP denied benefits. 7 million WICK denied benefits. The military and federal workers going to the polls unpaid. Never stop your enemy while they’re destroying themselves.

    1. “800,000 union federal workers [were never intended by the Founders to be] going to the polls [at all].”

      1. Turnout in 1789 was 11.6%, by design, and voters were required to be male, European, and 21, with 50 lbs. Sterling or 50 acres of net worth.

      2. In New York, the “poor,” “of indigent fortunes,” “with no will of their own,” and “under the immediate dominion of others” are about to conquer and destroy the city.

The Founders did not think that was a good thing, and the Founders did not intend for that to ever happen.

  6. Apparently, Trump has ordered the FBI to investigate what happened to Jimmy Hoffa.
This follows his order to investigate what happened to Amelia Earhart.
Perhaps it would be wiser for the FBI to look for the enemies within who stole the President’s marbles?

    1. President hasn’t lost his marbles. He’s the busiest president of all time. The Democrats socialism and road blocking everything is the problem plain and simple.

      1. Highest dumbocrap communist priorities: SNAP, EBT, WIC, food stamps, rent (i.e. private property) control, wage (i.e. private property) control, “free stuff,” “free status,” nationalized healthcare/Obongocare/unaffordable/affordablecare act, redistribution of wealth and social engineering.

  7. Man, the dems have really painted themselves into a corner on this one: they can’t both appease and reject their radical constituency at the same time. End the shutdown: they’ll be pissed you capitulated. Continue it: they’ll be pissed they aren’t being paid. There is no good outcome for them, and it is entirely their fault. Sh*t-down, is more like it, and they brought it on themselves.

I have long thought, since AOC was first hired to pose as a representative (though also hesitantly with Obama), that the dem party would fracture; it seems now they are simply set to implode altogether because they are a bunch of spineless, unethical cowards.

Anyone that thinks Mamdani is anything but an actor needs to get their head checked, and at this point that unfortunately is the majority of the privileged constituency of NYC. Please let this be a simple object lesson, and not a trend. AOC was and is bad enough, and it is very possible she will get Schumer’s seat, and again, because other dems, literally but for Fetterman, are spineless turds, that is just how the party will go. Dems have been willing to eat *bleep* and pretend they like it to preserve their status quo for a long time – this is far more serious than any of their past idiocy. That the Professor has been chewing on that for so long without question tells you all you need to know.

‘Vote blue no matter who’ is a joke, and honestly, given the communist leanings of the modern left, the colors should be switched. They are red to the core in 2025.

  8. If some of the people paying to build the ballroom are doing so because they are in the Epstein files that Trump is covering up, then it is only right for it to be named the Epstein Ballroom.

      1. That is silly. The autopen admiration had all of the material for four years. If they found anything on Trump, they would not have had to make up so much slanderous drivel.

    1. If some of Obama and Biden’s Soviet police state fascists are terrified that they could be the next finally investigated and indicted, they might try to keep their felonies covered up by attempting to deflect to BBBUUUTTTT… MUH TRUMP AND THE EPSTEIN FILES!!!!

These are the exact same people who spent eight years under Obama and then four years under Biden hiding The Epstein Files because the only people hurt by what was in those files was Clinton, Gates, Clinton, Clooney, Clinton, etc.

  9. *. We’ve known for a long time bureaucrats run the government. Is there a conflict of interest here? Congress is voting or is it really bureaucrats are voting.

Approximately 12.5 % of the population uses food stamps. That’s an economy. The 2 biggest users are Wal-Mart and McDonalds.

How many employees laid off at Amazon? 30 or 60 thousand? Yall get together like good socialists and open Amazon 2.

    1. *. Big rhetoric in congress, you’re taking food off the table of babies. Response-SEE FFFING WALMART AND MCDONALDS. Or maybe realize those jobs are jobs while living with parents or a second job for husband wife households, nuclear families.

      Paretos Principle

What a crud congress. It’s the reason for laws. Trustworthiness, honesty, and Abrego García …

    2. Where’s the Supreme Court?

There is no citable constitutional legal basis for “food stamps” on the federal level.

Like abortion, governmental charity must be conducted in the private sector or by the states.

      1. The reality is the taxpayers are subsidizing Wal-Mart and McDonald’s employees two big users. They can pay their employees a wage that includes food. They do sell food. That’s so insane.

  10. The Dems could pass the clean CR and then negotiate ACA subsidies. The point is they don’t want to negotiate; they want an ‘all or nothing’ solution. Based on what they are asking for in addition to the subsidy extension, they know there is no way in hell those funding initiatives would pass the giggle test. Also, ACA subsidies would easily pass but with more restrictions on paying for illegals and the Dems can’t abide that.

    1. Please cite the constitution for any legal basis for the ACA, healthcare, or any power to regulate any aspect of the healthcare industry.

All this —- is made up of whole jurisprudential cloth.

      1. Rabble:
Where is the Constitutional precedence for 2 parties? Why do congress get such a good paycheck, insurance, and other benefits that weren’t stated in the constitution?
Point of my question is, there are a lot of laws and regulations from the Legislative branch that are not necessarily from the Constitution, Preamble, or Delcaration. Laws and language change over time. Not all changes are good, of course, like ACA, but you can’t always rely on the parchment of a 255 year old document for all laws in the 21st century.

    2. Jeff, you are right. It appears by their actions (or lack thereof) that they have no solutions and this cadre are more interested in power than creating solutions. They are a new millionaire class of communists. Their goal, it seems, is to protect criminals and to destroy what is good about this nation.

  11. Well, now, this is the point where ideological principles meet an empty wallet. Just how committed are the actual democrat voters to the insane ideology of the far left. Ask each one of them, in the presence of their family members, just how much they want to sacrifice in order for millions of criminal invaders to have access to the taxpayer’s money?

    1. Rabble:
I expect the rabid “protest” dogs, soon to find themselves without the usual sustenance, will start doubting their masters and biting the hands. See how long Chuckie-boy lasts when no one is on their side.
I mean they’re losing the *unions.* They are beyond toasted.

      1. What an outrage. What corruption. Get rid of the “elected officials” and the bureaucrats just stand up. Vote yourselves a 100% salary increase.
