Clickbait: How a Five-Year-Old Boy Become the Latest Prop in Post-Truth Politics

Below is my column in The Hill on the false “bait boy” story that went viral last week, the latest concoction of the left and an enabling media. It was an all-too-familiar pattern. Even after it was debunked, Gov. Tim Walz was still raising it late last week to paint ICE as soulless, depraved thugs. It simply does not matter that it is untrue in our post-truth political environment.

Here is the opinion:

“I am outraged, and you should be too.” That message from former Vice President Kamala Harris has been a virtual mantra of the Democratic Party for years. For several months, this has meant decrying the imminent death of democracy and our descent into authoritarianism. Now, it means falsely claiming that ICE “kidnapped” or “arrested” a five-year-old boy and used him as “bait” to catch someone.

The “bait boy” story is actually the latest clickbait hoax in our “Age of Rage.

Five years ago, Harris was expressing the same call for outrage over the false story of Border agents whipping migrants in Texas. She expressed disgust over the “horrible and deeply troubling” scenes reminiscent of the slave period.

It quickly became a pile-on, with the media spreading the false account. Reps. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) and Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) described the incident as “worse than what we witnessed in slavery” and “white supremacist behavior.”

President Biden threw the agents under the bus, publicly expressing disgust over their conduct and promising punishment before any investigation had occurred: “It was horrible what to see, as you saw — to see people treated like they did: horses nearly running them over and people being strapped. It’s outrageous. I promise you, those people will pay.”

The media continued to repeat the false account, even as many of us pointed out that the publicly available video showed the story was demonstrably untrue. It did not matter. It fit the narrative on the left, and the agents were left under investigation for more than a year before being cleared of the “whipping” charges.

After the false story was exposed, the media just shrugged and went on to the next gotcha story.

As for this new hoax, Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minn.) declared the incident to be “the worst of the damn worst” in a video on X. Craig, a candidate for Senate, accused federal officers of taking the boy to “use him to lure his father out.”

That is false. According to reports, the father was spotted in public and fled, abandoning the boy. Like Harris, Craig reminded citizens that “this is a time where we should all be outraged. If this doesn’t pierce through your humanity, as a Republican member of Congress, if you can’t speak out about this, then you’ve got no humanity left.”

The key, again, is the requisite outrage. If you are not outraged, you are not human.

It is often said that we are living in a “post-truth” political environment. The term rose to favor due to the 2016 election of President Trump. Oxford Dictionaries specifically cited Trump when it selected the term as word of the year. The irony is that the proof of post-truth politics is often found among those who use it the most on the left, in the media and academia.

The bait boy hoax is particularly disgraceful. It is common to have minor children present during arrests of all kinds. Officers will often try to get family members to take a child rather than put him into child services.

In this case, ICE officers were trying to detain Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, an undocumented Ecuadorian national, when he bolted and left behind his five-year-old child, Liam Conejo Ramos.

Rather than leave the child in the freezing cold on the street, the officers took the child to his home to get his mother to take him in. She refused to open the door despite agents reportedly saying that she would not be detained. They proceeded to take the boy to McDonald’s, play his favorite music, and take care of him. He was never arrested. They also did not send him into detention. According to ICE, his father asked for the boy to be allowed to stay with him at a detention facility, and ICE agreed.

One can have good-faith objections to immigration enforcement policies. The Trump administration has made it a priority to deport the millions of undocumented migrants allowed into the country under the Biden administration. That is what Trump pledged to do in his campaign.

Post-truth politics and post-truth journalism are designed to fuel rage — to give people license to say and do things that they would not ordinarily say or do.

Even nurses this week have joined in the hate-fest against ICE and the administration. In New York, an injured NYPD officer and his colleagues were treated rudely by nurses when they were mistaken for ICE officers.

In Florida, a nurse named Lexie Lawler at the Baptist Health Boca Raton Regional Hospital directed her rage at White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt, who is expecting her second child.  Lawler posted that “As a labor and delivery nurse, it gives me great joy to wish Karoline Leavitt a fourth-degree tear. I hope you f——- rip from bow to stern and never s— normally again, you c—.” Like the ICE agents, Leavitt is not treated as a person but some Golem who can be joyfully and righteously harmed.

There is a strange aspect to rage addictions. Many on the left will use false stories to virtue signal, then unleash the most unvirtuous attacks. The greatest irony is that these individuals are doing precisely what they accuse ICE of doing. They are using this five-year-old as bait — clickbait — to fuel protests and outrage.

The call for outrage is meant to strip away the humanity of ICE agents, who are portrayed as having no sympathy or concern for a child. Indeed, the use of this child by protesters strips him of his humanity. He was as much of a prop as the ICE agents were.

The bait boy hoax does show that Harris and Craig may be right about one thing: “This is a time where we should all be outraged.”

  1. What’s the back-story of these Network Media blitz?

Dose; Gov. Tim Walz, Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minn.), Reps. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) and Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.), any given number of Individuals that get on the Networks for a 30-120 minute spot, get a Paycheck or their part of filling the void with fodder of the 24 hour/365 day news cycle?

Are they getting a paycheck, getting money under the table or their bigger Institution (The DNC, etc…) getting money or ‘Airtime in lieu of compensation (Political Ad discounts)’.

The Talking Heads (news anchors) need to be fed, and its a hungry 24 hr. time-slot to feed.
Is it the ‘business of business’ behind this?

    What’s the back-story behind all this ???

    1. Example: Representative Jamie Raskin (Dem – Maryland’s 8th Congressional District ~ 2025-2026 Committee on Judiciary) was on 3-4 Network Spots commenting on the Minnesota this past weekend.
      [Link] youtube.com/watch?v=tCFIvRDoUgs
      [Link] x.com/jamie_raskin/status/2015557873921671588
      Etc….

So will Representative Jamie Raskin receive Live-Airtime and/or Campaign Commercial Airtime “compensation” over the Broadcast Network or Local Affiliate(s) for his time spent on the News Spot(s) previously held (i.e.: like the news spots made this weekend) ?
[Ret.?: If he was not up for re-election, would he have wasted his time, commenting about something going on in Minnesota (not even his State of Maryland)]

Representative Jamie Raskin (Incumbent) is up for re-election:

      2026: Maryland’s 8th Congressional District election, 2026
Primary election: The primary will occur on June 23, 2026.

      Democratic primary election:
Democratic primary for U.S. House Maryland District 8
Incumbent Jamie Raskin and Stephen Leon are running in the Democratic primary for U.S. House Maryland District 8 on June 23, 2026.
Candidate(s): Jamie Raskin (Incumbent) and Stephen Leon

      Republican primary election:
Republican primary for U.S. House Maryland District 8
Candidate: Cheryl Riley is running in the Republican primary for U.S. House Maryland District 8 on June 23, 2026.

The general election will occur on November 3, 2026.
General election candidates will be added here following the primary.

  2. When you lose Rupert Murdoch, it is pretty much over.

Two Rupert Murdoch-owned newspapers, The Wall Street Journal and the New York Post, on Sunday urged Donald Trump to put a halt to his brutal immigration operation in Minnesota following the killing of Alex Pretti this weekend, in a clear sign the Australian media mogul is urging the president to back away from his aggressive strategy.

The Journal’s editorial, titled “Time for ICE to Pause in Minneapolis,” warned Trump that Pretti’s fatal shooting, the second killing of a protester in the city by federal officers, “is the worst incident to date in what is becoming a moral and political debacle” for his presidency.
The editorial board condemned Trump administration officials’ efforts to distort reality on Saturday’s tragedy, directly calling out Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Trump deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, who baselessly labeled Pretti a “domestic terrorist” and claimed the 37-year-old ICU nurse set out to kill law enforcement.
“Ms. Noem and Mr. Miller aren’t credible spokesmen. Their social-media and cable-TV strategy is to own the libs, rather than to persuade Americans,” it said.

The NY Post’s editorial board echoed the Journal in criticizing the administration’s messaging strategy, noting that eyewitness video of the shooting directly undercuts Trump officials’ claims that Pretti “brandished” a firearm at federal agents.

“The alacritous and misleading rhetoric coming out of the administration needs to stop: Any reasonable person who has watched the videos clearly knows by now he was not ‘waving his gun around,’” it said.

“Noem should also take a break from her self-promoting and combative TV hits,” it added.
The Post added that “however noble the mission is to rid the country of the ‘worst of the worst,’ the broad support for it is now ebbing fast.”

“Mr. President, the American people didn’t vote for these scenes and you can’t continue to order them to not believe their lying eyes,” it warned.

  3. Classic Turley post – using the story of a 5 year old boy as a promo (in a hypertexted link to Amazon no less) for his book “Age of Rage!” Does it get any more tacky? I especially like the bit where you claim that ICE is not a bunch of thugs days after the whole world watched them execute Alex Pretti in the middle of broad daylight and then listened Noem, Bovino and the lot lie about it in Orwellian fashion. You’re pathetic.

  4. Minneapolis is in a state of insurrection. Conspiracy and obstruction are felonies. The leaders must go to prison.

Crime is way down because deportations are way up. Don’t give in to staged riots and media lies. Lincoln faced worse.

    1. “Minneapolis is in a state of insurrection.” Um… and you know that how, from tv news?
You are not a lawyer. You just spew inanities everyday, every hour..

    2. Diogenes,
The rage Democrats are spewing I think is in an attempt to get the Trump admin to stop the fraud investigations. Just as we saw with the USAID fraud, waste and abuse, I think there are a lot of people very dependent on the fraud continuing. So much so, they need to escalate the riots, to increase the violence in the streets.

      1. True, even in other blue states, they’re not going as far as Minneapolis. Fraud crackdowns have made them desperate.

      2. Are there links to articles that explain what the fraud is all about, or is it just wild speculation?

    1. Right, because it all implicates Trump and Biden didn’t release it just to do Trump a favor (eye-roll).

      1. DustOff,
Seems to be a lot of pictures of Bill Clinton smiling a lot in Epstein’s pool, getting massages, getting real friendly with young girls.

          1. That is what we have seen so far. Bill Clinton in one of Epstein’s pools, getting a massage by a Epstein employee, sitting next to a young girl. He was smiling in all the pictures.
Then there are all those 26 trips Bill Clinton took on Epstein’s Lolita Express, 5 without his SS detail.
            Sure. Release the Epstein files.

  5. Soros-paid violent mob waging war against America. Evil governor walz comparing brave law enforcement officers to nazis. He has now gone full demonic. Between him and low-IQ word salad Carmela, we dodged two bullets, and I thank God for that.

    1. “Soros-paid violent mob waging war against America.”

Exactly. These are deviant agitators, media lies, and dark money. If we surrender to this fraud, we’re worthless.

    2. No proof soros had anything to do with MN.
Walz low IQ? And yet he’s the gov. of MN.
And you? old man from KS babbling like a nursing home retard.

        1. Me? Um… been out shoveling snow in WA.
          Documented you say?
The only thing that has been documented, is that you’re a fool.

    3. OldManFromKS,
The Soros paid mob are one thing. They are in it for the money. I get that. It is the true believers, the dupes, that I find disturbing. They actually believe they are fighting against . . . something. Take Alex Petti. His own parents told him, “We had this discussion with him two weeks ago or so, you know, that go ahead and protest, but do not engage, do not do anything stupid, basically.”
Nothing says stupid like taking a fully loaded handgun, with 2 additional fully loaded magazines to a protest, then do something stupid like confront, obstruct and failure to obey LEOs. Did not have to happen, but this is what you get with true believers.

  6. Why has no one asked Walz and Frey why they are not out there protesting and filming but have instead chosen to lead from behind?

  7. Excellent piece. Grateful for all you do, Professor and team, and sane, knowledgable posters. Somehow discourse largely still prevails here.

  8. Prof. Turley: How concerned should we be about being a “post-truth” society? You seem genuinely aghast. What are the consequences to our ability as a people to make sound decisions? Not just about immigration policy and its enforcement, but about alternate currencies like crypto, online sports betting, the legal status of AIs, chemical and plastic contamination of our food supply, the future of marriage and the nuclear family structure?

All of these pose complex problems needing to be solved. Four of the ones mentioned signal the end of civilization of left unsolved. Progress is stalled on each one because the truth is hard to swallow, and that gives infowarriors all they need to cloud the truth by seducing us with simple answers, demonization of opposing voices, and comforting false narratives.

What’s perplexing is how you, a man who devoted his life to the law, and spent thousands of hours immersed in courtroom procedure, has no practical ideas to offer on how to make the court of public opinion work to expose the truth and disarm the lies — to elevate fact and logic over fabrication and distaff. Your pathetic pabulum is counter-infowarfare, meaning countering lies with opposing lies.

“Trump incited the Jan 6th insurrection” vs. “The FBI sent in provocateurs who turned a peaceful demonstration into a riot”.

“Hunter’s laptop has all the earmarks of a Russian intel op” vs. “I won the (2020) election by a landslide”.

My guess is you’ve taken sides as a mild infowarrior — ignoring falsehoods are put across by the right, while lambasting those put out by the left.

There’s no way that is going to solve the problem of deceitful political infowarfare. Let the wasted time, energy and opportunity continue. Existential threats? Who says we’re poisioning our own food? What’s so special about the $US? We can’t regulate AI without China beating us! Being a mom or dad?…that’s a lifestyle choice!

  9. Although what you say is true the problem is the Trump administration continually lies about everything. It is for this reason no one believes anything from either side. It is unfortunate and sad that the United States has a sexual predator, con man and chronic liar as President. Even all of the artificial intelligences admit this.

  10. It does warm my heart to know that democrats are now worried about civilian deaths from law enforcement. Of course Ashli Babbit was not driving around the halls of congress in a car or trying to run over capitol policemen and she had no firearm . She also did not try to impede the police in their enforcement activity. She was trespassing. She was not wrestling with police either. Yet she was still shot. There were over 1 thousand people in the capitol and trespassing but were not shot either.

    1. Which is really odd because the current argument from those on the right is Pretti was ignoring commands and he got shot. Sounds like they are indeed perfectly ok with law enforcement shooting those who aren’t obeying commands.

    2. She impeded, she trespassed, she confronted police. How is that not a deadly warning for the Capitol Police?
      Oh, sorry, you were there.

    3. I’ve been in the U.S. Capitol a number of times and walked right in. When you say “trespassing”, you mean Nancy unilaterally closed the Capitol because Covid. So she could call everyday normal behavior an “insurrection”.

  11. It is a side-bar to the main story, but any nurse who could make the statements about a patient that Lexie Lawler did, even hypothetically, should be decertified and never permitted to administer any type of medical care again. Let’s find out how well her stupid, aggressive arrogance persists while she starves for lack of employment.

  12. Well said Professor. It appears that what is happening in Minneapolis / St. Paul is more than about deportations. It’s also about political power derived from illegal means such as fraud in government contracts, no oversight, use of illegals likely in voting, census (which of course determines representation and their slice of the federal pie).
I note that this appears to be mostly in the Twin Cities area and not the state as a whole. Also I note that the Republican House in Minnesota has initiated many investigations of wrongdoing, but it seems to go no where with the governor, and attorney general in the investigated party.
I don’t think this is going to be resolved without a massive federal intervention. I think Trump will eventually have to bite the bullet and declare an insurrection. But he will likely need to arrest or charge the governor and AG at the same time.
Additional information on the Mr. Pretti. He was part of the underground messaging in the city thru signal. Also, although he had a concealed carry permit, Minnesota law and many states require you carry identification with you and what identification is required. He did not do this. Also must states require that if you have a firearm with you, you announce it to police, which Mr Pretti apparently also did not do.
Bad decisions can have bad consequences.

    1. “I think Trump will eventually have to bite the bullet and declare an insurrection.”

Governor Walz has moved the needle in that direction by activating the National Guard. A governor calling in the National Guard can become part of the factual record used to justify later federal intervention.

      1. S. Meyer,
The question I have is what orders will Walz give the NG if he does deploy them? Be even more fun if some of the NG said his orders were not lawful and they would not obey them. Puts the Democrats Seditious 6 in a very uncomfortable position.

  13. Only voters can rid the US Congress of wigged Waters and hairless Pressley. But Baptist Health in Boca Raton has a responsibility to question R.N. Lawler’s ability to care for patients without regard to her political bias and mean spirit; bring on the hospital’s human resources department.

  14. The political left goes out of its way to provide more and more evidence to support this statement…

“The political left has shown its pattern of propaganda lies within their narratives so many times that it’s beyond me why anyone would blindly accept any narrative that the political left, their lapdog Pravda-USA media, their woke consumed bureaucracy, or their activist supporters actively push?”

What’s going on with protesters in Minnesota and around the USA…

Protesters in the 21st century seem to think they’re completely untouchable by law enforcement, no matter what they do, and that kind of thinking is delusional and has made some of the protesters stupid to the point of complete absurdity.

In my opinion; the regressive left is getting the political martyrs they want to elevate on their faux moral pedestals. They’re getting them from the ranks of truly ignorant protesters (sheeple) that have been ginned up by immoral propaganda into completely believing that everything they do is 100% righteous and they can do absolutely nothing wrong with their “ends justifies the means” violent mob resistance. These are the 21st century’s regressive left foot soldiers.

    1. Steve Witherspoon, you must be joking. DHS has been blatantly lying to your face and yet still bury your head in ignorance and naïveté.

Protesters are angry because of ICE and their overreaching tactics. They are doing it on purpose to stoke anger and provoke incidents that allow them to “show” how these protesters are violent. ICE has been constantly violating constitutional rights, attacking people peacefully recording their actions and assaulting protesters trying to provoke a violent response to justify an arrest. These agents are not only poorly trained, but also poorly vetted. There are Proud Boys members, former abusive cops, Oath Keepers, Neo-Nazis, etc. DHS has been on a hiring spree and to keep up they have shortened training times and relaxed physical fitness requirements. Have you seen those fatso’s wearing ICE and CBP gear? It’s clear DHS is not doing a good job with its training and vetting practices which leads to overly eager “agents” getting increasingly violent and unprofessional.

Blaming the protesters when it’s ICE and DHS that are the problem. None of the violence came to Minneapolis until DHS and ICE showed up. It’s intentional, be design. They want to stoke more violence so Trump can have an excuse to invoke the insurrection act and activate the military.

Kristi Noem and Bovino have been constantly lying on tv and everyone see it. Even Fox News is not buying their BS. Don’t pretend to be unaware of the real time disconnect between what they are saying and what the video is showing you.

      1. george
Steve Witherspoon, you must be joking. DHS has been blatantly lying to your face and yet still bury your head in ignorance and naïveté.
        ______________________________
Yeah and biden always told the truth…. HAHAHAHA.

Hey george, seen the news on the new AF 1 The US Air Force is sure happy to have it.

        You lose again.

      2. X,
Maybe you don’t realize this but absolutely nothing you wrote disproves what I wrote, if you think it did, you’re showing a level of delusional thinking that’s not likely fixable.

That said; you’re welcome to your opinion even when it shows that you’re so gullible that you’ve swallowed propaganda as if it’s fact.

        Have a nice day.

    2. Steve,
      Well said.
Pertti was one of those dupes who blindly believed the delusional narrative being pushed by the left. And it cost him his life. Even his own parents said, “We had this discussion with him two weeks ago or so, you know, that go ahead and protest, but do not engage, do not do anything stupid, basically,” Michael Pretti added, per CBS News. “And he said he knows that. He knew that.”

  15. MAGA – How come the dollar has fallen so low under trump?

Opps, I get it, he really meant MAGMA – Make America Get Measles Again.

    1. I forgot to mention that long interest rates are also up under trump. What’s going on? Is trump actually an imbecile?

    2. Replying to Anon at 949 re the “MAGMA” item. You are kidding right? We eliminated measles long ago and FJB brought it back into the country from 3rd world cesspools.

  16. What this continues to show is that these are not new facts being revealed that require public understanding. This is simply another lump of coal thrown into the furnace.

The goal is not to inform but to keep the rage burning. Outrage must be constantly fed. The usual ideologues will fall for it. A few more may be drawn in. A few may drift away. But the purpose is maintenance, not persuasion.

This is not about truth or policy. It is about sustaining emotional heat. That is the function of post-truth politics: not conversion, but combustion.

    1. OLLY,
To me, it is amazing that when the truth finally gets out, these dupes continue to believe it. And or, when the truth does get out, all those MSM who were pushing the hoax narrative, they shrug and say nothing, and their dupes continue to believe MSM, blindly.

  17. If you want to see a prime example of irony and hypocrisy with regard to Turley,

“The media continued to repeat the false account, even as many of us pointed out that the publicly available video showed the story was demonstrably untrue. It did not matter.”

This is in regard to the whipping incident. Which makes it odd because Turley immediately went to work criticizing a clear lie from the Biden administration. But when the situation is on the other foot, DHS and ICE and President Trump outright lying about Good and Pretti’s shootings he sure seems intent on deflecting or turning a blind eye on what videos clearly show. Turley’s hypocrisy is astonishing in its clarity and disgusting in its obviousness.

Why isn’t Turley openly criticizing Trump and DHS for doing exactly what he saw the Biden administration do? It’s obvious he isn’t going to unless he wants to incur the wrath of MAGA, Trump, DHS, and possibly Miller. Turley, like most Republicans turn into mewling cowards when the obvious lying and gaslighting is coming from the right. Kristi Noem falsely claimed Pretti brandished is weapon at ICE. That was a lie. Bovino falsely claimed Pretti intended to massacre DHS agents. That was a clear lie. Kash Patel, stated protesters bringing guns to protests intent to assault and obstruct ICE operations. Every passing hour DHS continues to peddle and make more obvious lies and Turley gingerly ignores it while attempting to gaslight the left as a means of distraction from lying he supposedly is opposed to, but only when a Democrat is in office. That just makes Turley look stupid. It corrodes his credibility if you can still call it that. If he’s so concerned about this 5 year old’s “hoax” story perhaps he should mention the fact that DHS is on a lying spree so egregious that even Fox News is not having it. Turley, shame on you.

    1. I stopped reading all of your 1000 comments a day. I save about an hour a day, my blood pressure went down, my eye sight is better, the grass is greener, the sky is bluer and I think my hair is growing back.

      1. The truth is that hard to handle ay hullbobby?

I suggest you get help for you neurosis, not stop reading the truth.

        1. Truth and Mr X don’t mix. He replies to himself as Anonymous all the time as a lame way to validate his comment but we all see through it.

          1. Hullbubby, the fact that you think I post anonymously and can’t figure it out is amusing. I only post as X with the occasional early hit on the return button.

It shows us how bad it’s gotten when the likes of you cannot distinguish fact from opinion or opinions from different people.

What is indeed interesting is the lack of any true rebuttal or a rational argument. Perhaps because you have none to offer.

            1. Like when you said Trump would keep the new 747-400.
You lose, the Air Force is happy to have another one.
              You have zip to offer

      2. Hullbobby, you’re hilarious. I know you read the whole thing. Otherwise you wouldn’t be commenting on it. But on the oft chance you do only read a few sentences it would explain why you choose to wallow in your own ignorance.

      3. “I stopped reading all of your 1000 comments a day. ” We stopped reading your inane comments long ago. One can only take so much stupid in a day.

      4. HullBobby,
Yeah, just scroll past. I purposely keep his comments off my screen. Not worth reading. But the few times I do, it is when people like John Say, Lin, OLLY completely dismantle him!! Lin does it with such grace. John Say breaks him down line by line. And watching OLLY make him run in circles like a dog chasing it’s tail was epic!

    2. At this point one has to wonder if JT is a Russian bot just like all the pro putin (oops trump) comments here.

    3. GSX, it is clear, most people skip or read just a sentence or so, and then they flush the toilet. The good news is that your BS cured Vincnte’s constipation.
