On Tuesday, my new book for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Rage and the Republic, will be released. It is a book about revolutions, including our own. The book begins with a quote from the French writer Jacques Mallet du Pan, written in 1793: “Like Saturn, the Revolution devours its children.” History has proven him right over and over again. Today’s revolutionaries often become tomorrow’s reactionaries as the mob turns on its former leaders.
That inexorable pattern will soon play out as Democratic establishment leaders fuel the rage in the streets of cities like Minneapolis, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia. A glimpse of this reality was seen this week at Sarah Lawrence College. The college has long pandered to the far left and has virtually purged any conservatives or libertarians from its faculty ranks. Without a conservative to cancel, students set upon liberal columnist Ezra Klein, disrupting his talk, as Cristle Judd, president of Sarah Lawrence College, sat obediently in silence next to him.
After disrupting the event, the students left to carry on their protests outside. What was notable was Klein’s surprise, who (to his credit) remained calm and tried to engage the protesters. Klein attempted to object that he was not a “denier” of alleged atrocities in Gaza. The students were not there for a dialogue but a disruption. They ignored Klein’s efforts to tamp down the rhetoric and yelling.
Judd was entirely useless, remaining a mere pedestrian watching the protest. After the students left, she quipped, “Welcome to Sarah Lawrence College.” There was no pledge to suspend or expel the students: just a shrug and a joke.
I have long argued that universities need to focus on conduct, not speech content. This is conduct. If you disrupt classes or events (rather than protesting outside), you deny the very essence of higher education by preventing others from hearing a diversity of viewpoints.
In fairness to Klein, I am not suggesting that he is leading a mob. Rather, he is an example of how the focus on cancelling conservative figures is unlikely to end there. Sarah Lawrence College is a liberal echo chamber with virtually no conservatives or libertarians to attack. In that environment, the left becomes the target of the far left; the spectrum simply adjusts with no relative reactionaries.
After years of viewpoint intolerance, schools like Yale have finally reached the point where there is not a single faculty member left who donates to the Republican party or candidates.
In 2018, a faculty member who called for greater viewpoint diversity at Sarah Lawrence was the subject of threats and vandalism.
Samuel J. Abrams, a professor at Sarah Lawrence College, wrote about the problem almost ten years ago. His research showed that, while the faculty was overwhelmingly liberal, the administrators were even more so. In his survey of 900 college administrators, he found that liberal staff members outnumber conservative staff members by a 12-to-1 ratio: “A fairly liberal student body is being taught by a very liberal professoriate — and socialized by an incredibly liberal group of administrators.”
That was almost a decade ago.
This does not happen overnight or by accident. It is the result of faculty and administrators replicating their own views while effectively purging their ranks of conservatives or moderates.
When this intellectual cleansing is complete, what remains is a new spectrum and an adjusted political litmus test. That is how a liberal columnist like Klein can become the target of a cancel campaign.
As Klein pleaded, “You have me right here. You can talk to me,” he was missing the point. It is not about dialogue or intellectual exchange. These students have been taught that they do not have to tolerate opposing views on their campuses. Klein was simply next in line.

Remember the “Free Speech Movement” from Berkeley? They still have the “Free Speech Movement” cafe it’s built right into the undergraduate library. There is a “Free Speech Spot” embedded in stone on Sproul Plaza.
Sproul is where a hysterical mob did $1 Million damage to the campus to stop the comediain Milo from speaking in 2017.
You could stand on the Free Speech Spot, look north and see the FSM cafe to the west the Playhouse facility where another hysterical mob was allowed to attack the Jewish students and shut down there speaker event on Feb. 27 2024. No arrests were made. The police chief of the UC campus cops is Ms. Yogananda who ran and hid going radio silent on J6 next day Nancy Pelosi promoted her to Chief of the Capitol Hill police. She lasted about 6 months.
In Berkeley in early 2024 a member of the Berkeley City Council was terrorized into resigning his position after verbal and posted threats on his door. He wrote a letter of explanation that was published in the local Berkeleyside web site and nowhere else. No DOJ or AG or DA investigation followed.
Recently the Berkeleyside site ended it’s comments section there is no free speech left there either. The edition announcing this included emails sent to the editors all celebrating the end of the comments section. Years ago the Daily Californian student newspaper at the UC ended comments as well.
The last thing in Berkeley where anybody gets to say anything is the Berkeley Scanner web site started by a courageous young woman who reported on crime at the Berkeleyside site. It has a comments section along with constituting the only base of reporting on endemic crime in the Berkeley area, a very dangerous environment as the presence of the students at the UC and the notoriously weak enforcement mandated by the local government produce an incentive and baiting action for criminal predators. None of this draws any attention from any of the other media in the region. Though the most recent episode of free speech suppression at UC Berkeley after a Turning Point USA event was disrupted drew attention from US DOJ Civil Rights Divsion.
The Left is beyond redemption.

After a very trying week, I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say that it comes as such a relief that after scanning 3 million pages of documents, as well as more than 2,000 videos and 180,000 images, of the DOJ Epstein repository; “Data Set 9,” “Data Set 10,” “Data Set 11” and “Data Set 12” totaling over 300 gigabytes of data, paper, video, photographs, and audio that live within the FBI’s main electronic case management system, “Sentinel.” These records would include investigative reports and records from the FBI Miami field division’s original Epstein investigation. The bulk of the records would come from the second investigation carried out by the FBI’s New York Office, including memorandums about the investigation and potential targets, locations to be searched, records to be subpoenaed, and hundreds of pages of “302s,” which are the forms that FBI agents use to memorialize what witnesses, victims and suspects said in interviews with investigators.

It’s congress that has failed for years. Fines for not following fed laws are better than troops, daily fines unreclaimable. The census will require action and elections.
They want money. Make them earn it and penalize with fines, fairly for crimes committed by the States themselves.

Victorian fiction routinely used “darkness” as a symbolic code, and Brontë allows her narrator to exploit that convention. By keeping him racially indeterminate, Brontë ensures that he remains a permanent outsider, excluded not just by class but by perception itself.
Even readings that assume Heathcliff is white English rely on literary license rather than textual certainty. He may be an Irish orphan, whose dark hair and unfamiliar features would have been enough to mark him as alien in nineteenth-century Yorkshire. He may also reflect the Gothic “changeling” trope, in which a child’s darkness signifies unease or disruption rather than biology. In each case, physical description serves atmosphere and moral framing, not documentary accuracy.
Ultimately, Wuthering Heights is a novel about how stories are told to excuse cruelty. Heathcliff’s “darkness”—whether read as racial, symbolic, or rhetorical—is less a fact about his body than a product of narrative choice. The literary license taken by the narrators does the moral work of the novel: it explains, rationalizes, and perpetuates his exclusion.
