The Windy City: Chicago Mayor Johnson Puts “ICE on Notice” … of Meaningless Gesture

I have long been a critic of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, who has been a disaster for my home city. From moronic proposed taxes to racist comments, Johnson has brought some of the greatest devastation to the city since the Great Fire. Deeply unpopular, he often uses race-baiting commentary or gimmicks to distract voters. The latest is his chest-pounding press conference where he declared “we are putting ICE on notice in our city.”  The threat was that he was ordering the Chicago Police Department to move against ICE in the city. However, even a cursory examination reveals that, as before, there is less than meets the eye in Johnson’s theatrics.

Democratic leaders have jumped the shark on ICE and are now trying to outdo each other with increasingly reckless rhetoric. Gov. Tim Walz declared last week that this was now a “Fort Sumter” moment, alluding to a new civil war. Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner promised to “hunt down” ICE officers like “Nazis.”

Rep. Eric Swalwell has promised, if elected governor, he will take away the driver’s licenses of ICE officers and bar them from employment in the state. It is hard to see what else he can promise to take away other than cable and WiFi.

Johnson is not to be out-yelled on this or any other subject.

He signed an executive order Saturday laying the groundwork for the city to investigate and seek prosecution of federal law enforcement officers.

The order, titled “ICE On Notice,” directs members of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) to document alleged illegal activity by federal immigration agents and refer evidence of felony violations to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office for possible prosecution.

He declared that “with today’s order, we are putting ICE on notice in our city. Chicago will not sit idly by while Trump floods federal agents into our communities and terrorizes our residents.”

While it is true that officers do not have absolute immunity, it is highly unlikely that they could be liable for the increased enforcement of immigration laws. Just a day ago, a federal judge and Biden appointee in Minnesota rejected Attorney General Keith Ellison’s demand that federal operations be enjoined in his state. He could not come up with a single claim that the expanded operations were unlawful to sustain the burden for an injunction.

A close examination of the Johnson order shows that it is little more than a directive to the CPD to document any alleged violations. While suggesting that CPD would arrest federal officers, it merely states that they should take statements and preserve any videotapes of alleged violations.

Johnson said the order makes Chicago the first city in the nation to pursue legal accountability for alleged misconduct by federal immigration agents.

That included the alleged game-changing order that police should file “incident reports.” Actual incident reports! ICE officers are presumably fleeing en masse at the very threat of such CPD reports.

    1. The only people writing positive things about Mayor Johnson are other black Marxist Democrats. Dr. Thomas Sowell called him a pathetic example of Democrat racists promoting their worst.

Dr. Sowell is very black and grew up experiencing Democrat Kluxxer racism.

  1. Governor Wallace (a democrat) declared: “With today’s order, we are putting [the National Guard] on notice in [Alabama]. We will not sit idly by while [JFK] floods federal agents into our communities and terrorizes our residents.”

Toothless demagoguery then. As it is now.

  2. If this mayor wants to pick a fight with the Feds over Federal issues, feel free. Just do not cry when the Feds swing back. They take a very dim view of harming their people. Interfering with Federal enforcement can be an interference charge. That can lead to lengthy jail sentences. If I was a smart Fed, every criminal I caught, I would publish their crimes and then tell the citizenry that THIS mayor is working to keep the very same criminals on their streets.

  3. Give it some time, then we can ask him how many arrests did he make of these bad ICE boogiemen.
Since it’s such a huge problem to him, I’m sure he will have a whole jail full of ICE agents in no time!
Wait, you arrested none??? Were you sincere about the problem?

  4. Mayor Brandon johnson can’t prosecute ICE agents or anyone else . That power belongs to CCSA Elieen Burke who never received the mayor’s latest virtue signaling memo.

  5. As far too many of us go nuts and pretend the end of the world is upon us
Some word of Wisdom from Louis Armstrong.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBrd_3VMC3c

Martin Luther King has a dream – witch the left is pi$$ing all over.

But Louis Armstrong looked out at the world and saw that the good vastly outweighed the bad.

All of us who are ranting about civil war – but especially the idiots on the left who honestly but completely absurdly think this moment is Worse than Nazi Germany, should look arround.

We live in the best moment in history bar none.
And we live in the best country in the world in that moment.

We live in the least racist, least sexist, freest moment in history – except tomorrow.

I was thinking of Rene Good and Alex Pretti.

    What a waste!

Several children are without their mother because she valued criminals in this country illegally more than her family and her children.

As we learn more of Alex Pretti the more sad it is that he did NOT spend more of his time with his patients at the VA doing good,

Both are dead because they martyred themselves to fight fascism that isn’t, to protect criminals for the consequences of their own actions.

They are dead because they did NOT “think to myself What a Wonderful World”

There is no cause the left is fighting for today that is worth sacrificing a day for much less the rest of your life.

  6. ICE is the LAW that must be enforced.

Protesters are criminals that must be prosecuted, convicted, and penalized.

      1. Let me rephrase it: IS being enforced.
How’s that for some reality dems? your voter base and low-wage help is being deported.
Plans thwarted. By one single man by the way. Trump! Trump! Trump!

  7. From the vicious sleazeball Emmanuel, to the non-entity Washington, to Admiral Ackbar and now this? What is wrong with Chicago?

    1. Maybe if you became mayor it would all be better. Move the blacks to NY and push whites into the city.

  8. Mayor Bozo needs to follow slightly-smarter Minnesota Governor Bozo into cooperating with ICE; “They should coordinate with local law enforcement, pick these people up in the middle of the night when they’re not suspecting it”.
I would love to know who it was that “had a talkin’ to” commie Elmer Fud that caused his 180 degree change of mind!
Suddenly they deserve to be picked up (and presumedly deported)! AND when they least suspect it! What a transformation!
The best part is him acting like it was his idea all along and the feds started cooperating with him!
Hold off on the fraud conviction and clean up Minnesota while he’s still around!
I guess the protesters will have to work the 3rd shift too. Brrr!

  9. “He’s such a horrible person,” wrote Walsh. “And such a dishonest person. Yes, he was involved in that race. He endorsed the losing candidate, and she lost 100% because of him. She lost 100% because of this past year of his chaos, his cruelty, and his incompetence. Her loss was a total rejection of him.”

Thank you Texas republicans for doing all your redistricting. You will no lose the next election in a huuuuuuuuge landslide.
    Idiots.

  10. I have an inside scoop on Mayor Johnson’s next step if this move doesn’t work. His close aides tell me (confidentially of course) that he is planning to write a strongly-worded letter to the editor. That is the nuclear option that will have Secretary Noem shaking in her boots.

  11. Might be interesting to see them try to arrest/prosecute a federal officer for doing his/her job. The fun would be when it gets tossed and Johnson’s nose gets rubbed in the dirt – Again!

  12. Now I know why you all were so upset about Hunter Biden making $20 million (or whatever it was) while his daddy was the Prez/

He was a piker compared to trump…

Emissaries connected to a royal in Abu Dhabi discreetly signed a deal to buy a 49% stake in a Trump family cryptocurrency company for $500 million four days before Trump’s 2025 inauguration, The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday.

Now we’re talking, $500 million is a much better bribe.
Hunter was a piker compared to trump.

  13. King Johnson of Chicago now has declared his Supremacy over the entire US Federal Government. I thought the left wanted no kings?
He knows this is unenforceable but wants to grabstand for the home crowd. Total moron, but that’s what you get when you elect communist.

Do you think a cop risk going to jail for the Mayor? No, no.cop wants to end up in jail, not even a federal jail.

  14. “Johnson said the order makes Chicago the first city in the nation to pursue legal accountability for alleged misconduct by federal immigration agents.”—The under-structure of this accord already exists, and has always been an available avenue of accountability and remedy, for any civic administrative domain, at any time, if abuse can be legally proven….Johnson brings nothing new, creative, interesting, or helpful to the table. He’s a knock-off Gucci bag.

Johnson makes his basically-redundant “order” to extend and sustain popular gossip and kinetic outrage, keeping the insurrection-pot well stirred. Ergo, the “new-political-idiot” has learned that he can directly affect culture and politics, incite, with the added implication that he is competent and effective. Johnson is neither competent nor effective, but a presumptuously arrogant agitator.

    1. LOL Supremacy clause. And being a sanctuary city is by. Law illegal. I think accountability is finally coming to the Mayor for his illegal tricks.

  15. Dammit Bondi
Indict these politicians for incitement and obstruction to the immigration enforcement process, if we common citizens can see so should DOJ! Do not cower under these leftist organized attacks. Double down, kick them to the curb President Trump. Let the chips fall where they may. Good law abiding Americans deserves it, we’re tired of being ripped off by these criminals.

  17. The idiom that comes to mind is “Biting the hand that feeds you”. All theses states and cities survive on federal largess. If they are going to snarl at the the Feds, then perhaps these states and cities should federal funds spigot turned off and see if their perspective changes.
