“I Will Not Sit Idly as They Use Me as a Prop”: Is Bill Clinton Moving Back Into Contempt?

The Clintons are again suggesting that they might not agree to a deposition after previously yielding to the threat of a contempt vote. Hillary Clinton taunted House Oversight Chair James Comer “if you want this fight…let’s have it—in public.” For his part, Bill Clinton seemed more conclusive on X in opposing a deposition: “I will not sit idly as they use me as a prop in a closed-door kangaroo court.” The question is whether the Clintons are again gaming the system after avoiding a bipartisan vote to hold them in contempt.

As with the Hunter Biden deposition (which was also delayed by such tactics), there are various reasons for holding a closed deposition before public hearings.

First, these depositions allow professional staff to conduct questioning in a methodical and professional manner. In a public hearing, questioning is conducted by members who are often ill-equipped for substantive inquiries.

Second, the Clintons must be asked about a range of documents and communications that contain names and privacy-protected information. At a public hearing, the use of such documents would trigger redactions and interruptions.

Third, these depositions allow for in-depth questioning on transactions and communications. In a public hearing, members are confined to a five-minute rule that guarantees questioning cannot achieve much, if any, depth.

Those are all reasons the Clintons want a public hearing in which members, not staff, ask questions under tight time limits. It produces superficial examinations with little ability to pursue substantive conflicts or issues.

None of this really matters legally. All citizens are compelled to appear at such hearings. They may invoke the Fifth Amendment, but they must appear. Even the Clintons.

However, the Clintons have spent a lifetime gaming the system, avoiding accountability for alleged crimes, including (in the case of Bill Clinton) federal perjury.

This is vintage Clinton. After a bipartisan vote in committee to hold them in contempt, they took a 180-degree turn and agreed to the depositions. The final vote was then cancelled.

Once cancelled, Bill Clinton is again suggesting that he will “not sit idly by” for such a deposition. It is not clear what that means. He will sit for this deposition or be held in contempt like any other citizen.

The declaration could mean anything from laying the groundwork for invoking the Fifth Amendment to another act of defiance of the subpoena. He could be planning to refuse to answer certain questions in a combative approach to the deposition. However, that could still result in a contempt sanction.

Notably, the Clintons have long been able to control the conditions of their questioning. Even with the Independent Counsel, Clinton was able to secure concessions on time and questions. He still tripped the wire and committed perjury, according to a federal court.

This is a rare occasion where they will not dictate such conditions. That raises the intriguing possibility that Bill Clinton could set a precedent by invoking the Fifth Amendment. Otherwise, he may not be idle, but he will be present.

  1. Xlax, like usual chimes in on this making his typical argument that students and colleges are entitled to be closed minded and politically blind,
and that criticizing them for being a far left mono culture is somehow hypocrisy.
    That argument is self refuting.

But he is also making a number of fundamentally false assumptions about education.

K12 education is about acquiring specific knowledge and very core skills.
While in excellent schools with honors students K12 education AFTER at has managed to inculcate that CORE of knowledge and fundimental skills starts to perform the more advanced task of colleges.

Colleges have an entirely different agenda than K-12.
Colleges are supposed to be less about inculclating Knowledge, than the skills to acquire knowledge, and then to evaluate, and act based on that knowledge. Colleges are to teach you how to THINK – NOT What to think.

Whether it is in the technical sphere – how to design a bridge – as opposed to how to build a bridge someone else designed.

The presumption with K-12 is that students start with few skills and little knowledge. Students are not supposed to be taught what to think or how to think, They are supposed to be taught facts and fundimental skills.

Contra Xlax, College is is where we expect students to learn critical thinking. Most are not able to run their own lives, they certainly are not ready to run the college or the world or to tell the college what and how they should be taught.

Further the world – the rest of us, employers EXPECT that a HS degree tells us that the degree holder has basic competence in reading, and writing, and math, If the HS failed – then it has cheated whoever paid it and cheated the public, and should not be accredited.

The world expects even more out of College Graduates – that they have the basic skills to manage a McDonalds, that they can juggle and prioritize a collection of taks while assuring that no balls get dropped, that they can lead a small number of others, that they can solve basic problems, and that they can truthfully and concisely report success to their superiors. This is the core to critical thinking and the distinction between an entry level manager or professional and a burger flipper.

We do not expect that College students START with those skills fully developed. We do not even start assuming they can manage their own lives.

But we DO expect them to buckledown and LEARN, not assume they already know everything.

No xlax, a college student does not get to tell his structures professor That Newton was wrong, and that the student will use the Quetzelacota method of determining beam loads, because well “indigenous people are oppressed”.

The ideas of Marx – which modern modern progressivism is just a permutation of have never worked anywhere ever despite numerous tries.
Until such time as some Marxist or even social democrat manages to successfully operate a government under something that is more than marxist than some permutation of John Locke – then Marx should not be taught as anything beyond as an example of failure in either HS or College.
The same is true of any economic system other than Smithian Classical liberalism – when you can demonstrate Success, is the real world – you can teach that in HS or college.

We teach things that have failed – as failures – so we can learn from those failures.
We teach what has succeeded, as sucess so we can learn what works.

That is what the people paying for college should be expecting.
That is what those hiring people prestigious college degrees expect.

If you graduated from college with a worthless degree absent the skills needed to survive, much less thrive with a mountain of debt.
Some of the blame for that falls on YOU.
But some of it also falls on Idiots like Xlax, who think that students have the ability to decide for themselves what they need to learn and how.

No as a college student you do not get to decide what you wish to hear.
No as a college professor you do not get to teach whatever you wish to teach.

You must teach what works – and why, and what has not worked and why,
and you must teach your students how to figure that out themselves in the complex problems in the real world outside of academia where you can make idiotic claims that some modern permutation of Marxism might actually work,

Or lie to students that conservatism is some optional ideology rather than a fundamental principle of the universe.
Change is absolutely critical for the improvement of the human condition, but 9 times out of ten new ideas FAIL.
Conservatism is the basic reflection of that.

  2. My comment was just blocked. My neighbor works for the FBI so not sure if they are violating the federal Electronic Communications Act – a felony crime.

Reminder: each and every FBI employee and contractor makes a promise to GOD (oath of office) to not violate the First Amendment or Fourth Amendment rights of Americans.

Pam Bondi also made that same oath of office to not violate rights! Former Attorney General John Mitchell served 19 months in federal prison for far less.

    1. Most people are actually closet atheists whose oaths mean nothing to them because at heart they have no honor. It’s just a fact of human nature and always has been.

  4. Above the law as usual. The Clinton’s are a classic example of arrogance and self privilege This should be offensive to all!

  5. Bill Clinton: Eating ain’t cheating. It’s all you need to know about Bill ‘Bubba’ Clinton, no cigar needed.

  6. When I met Laken, it felt like I had known her my entire life; we clicked immediately. Laken was my fearless other half; she was the best friend anyone could ask for. Laken wasn’t just my best friend; she was my sorority sister, roommate, my person, and, most importantly, she became my family.

Laken was an extraordinary soul, full of love and kindness, and each memory with her holds its own special beauty. Every moment spent with Laken is one I will cherish forever. Whether it was the time we got stuck in an elevator, our study dates filled with laughter and sometimes tears, the banners we painted together on the hard floors of our AXO house, or simply driving around while singing our favorite songs, every moment is a testament to her beautiful spirit.

Her selflessness and love knew no limits. She was everyone’s biggest cheerleader; she made sure to celebrate every moment, no matter how small. Whether it was lending a listening ear or getting our house to grab a sweet treat, she knew exactly how to comfort us all. Laken was the kind of person who encouraged others to become the best versions of themselves. She lit up any room she entered and left every place and person better than she found them. Laken was a once-in-a-lifetime friend, and I’m forever grateful that God blessed me with her friendship. She pushed me to be a better person, cheering me on and always giving me the best advice. She showed me how to live life to the fullest, how to love, and how to trust in the Lord.

  7. I promise, Willy gonna pay. He cannot wiggle his way out of this one. Not this one. If he’s forced to answer honestly, he’s doomed. If he lies, he’s doomed. Pleads the fifth, he’s cooked. This is the end. He may fake a heart attack or some other serious illness and be excused, but everyone knows what that must mean. It is time. He has fooled millions long enough and the witch he clings to, as well. And they know it. They are the Great Deceivers. Never, ever fooled me for a split second. Surrounded by reporters asking him about Flowers when he was a candidate, he said because of so many lies about him, the media couldn’t hear him denying the accusations. A little, silly sounding, half-muffled giggle burped out of his mouth, subtly convincing his questioners of his carefree attitude about such nonsense.

  8. Interesting how BC says he’s being used as a prop when the testimony is private. It seems like he would be a prop if he was subjected to a public display. It seems like pols just say shit and expect their supporters to parrot the line without thinking.
