“Anathema in the University Mission”: Bari Weiss Canceled at UCLA

This week, CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss was supposed to give the UCLA Burkle Center’s annual Daniel Pearl Memorial guest lecture on “The Future of Journalism.” It was a wonderful opportunity for students to hear from one of the impactful voices in the media. However, they will not be able to do so after a successful cancel campaign supported by faculty members.
The College Fix reports that roughly 11,000 people signed a petition demanding the university cancel the event, and a leader at the center hosting her talk threatened to resign if the journalist spoke.
One of the most outspoken critics was Margaret Peters, associate director of the Burkle Center, who suggested that she would resign even if Weiss were allowed to speak virtually, according to The Daily Bruin. The LA Times reported that UCLA was turning to the common excuse of security concerns to effectively yield to the heckler’s veto.Peters told The Daily Bruin:

“that she believes Weiss has used the guise of free speech to attack people on the left whose opinions she does not agree with – and having her speak at a signatory lecture would legitimize these actions….To invite somebody who is working against that mission in highly powerful places just seems like anathema in the university mission.”

This statement is an example of the culture that is inculcated into students who become intolerant in college. It explains why students feel righteous in shouting down or interrupting speakers.

What is “anathema” to the academic mission is the viewpoint intolerance and orthodoxy shown by Peters and the faculty and students at UCLA. In accusing Weiss of attacking those with “opinions she does not agree with,” Peters demanded that Weiss be silenced as someone with opinions that she does not agree with.

The lack of self-awareness is a common element among many in higher education who claim to support free speech and intellectual diversity while purging universities of conservative or libertarian faculty or speakers.

The fact that UCLA would pick Peters to lead this Center speaks volumes about the culture in higher education. Peters felt complete license to speak as the Associate Director for the canceling of speakers with opposing views.  Her overt intolerance was likely an advantage with other faculty members.

After years of surveys showing the purging of faculty ranks, there is no evidence that faculty members are willing to allow a diversity of opinions.

After years of viewpoint intolerance, schools like Yale have finally reached the point where there is not a single faculty member left who donates to the Republican Party or candidates.

In 2018, a faculty member who called for greater viewpoint diversity at Sarah Lawrence was the subject of threats and vandalism.

Samuel J. Abrams, a professor at Sarah Lawrence College, wrote about the problem almost ten years ago. His research showed that, while the faculty was overwhelmingly liberal, the administrators were even more so. In his survey of 900 college administrators, he found that liberal staff members outnumber conservative staff members by a 12-to-1 ratio: “A fairly liberal student body is being taught by a very liberal professoriate — and socialized by an incredibly liberal group of administrators.”

That was almost a decade ago.

This does not happen overnight or by accident. It is the result of faculty and administrators replicating their own views while effectively purging their ranks of conservatives or moderates.

Today, even liberal columnists like Ezra Klein have been subject to disruptive protests. It is rare for libertarian or conservative figures to be invited on campuses and these faculty members have succeeded in deterring others.

It is important for speakers to continue to appear on campuses despite these threats. We cannot yield to the mob.

Indeed, today I will be speaking at the University of Southern California from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm PST at the USC Davidson Conference Center (3409 South Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, CA 90007). I look forward to speaking about my book Rage and the Republic.” I will then be speaking in the evening at the California Club.

  2. The corruption starts with the top of California, and it’s corrupt election policies and procedures. Until that is resolved, nothing changes in California, but when the corrupter is toppled, the entire university structure needs a complete overhaul. Eventually, the corruption will break the entire state into reform.

    1. The Counties in CA run the elections. The self-serving corruption of state Dems was Prop 50. It was pitched to voters as an “equalizer” to cancel out the 2025 TX redistricting map. But, what if the Courts overturned the TX map change? At the last minute before passing the CA leg, sponsors quietly removed a clause that would re-equalize if TX was court-ordered to revert maps. Pure Dem political advantage was the goal – the TX map was the pretext.

That was done out in the open. Avenues for organized vote cheating are extremely narrow, and detectable.
The Country Officials who oversee elections are not crooked…they are honest and competent.

Vote farming is currently untoward and corrupt, but legal under state law. Repubs joined in vote farming last cycle.

If I were you, I’d be more concerned about election cycle infowarfare, i.e. duping the public about candidates and their policy positions. Half the CA voters are weak in civics and policy, and thus manipulatable by the political parties.

  3. Any thoughts of someone starting a counter signature campaign to be “allowed” to hear the invited speakers? The campaign should stress that this is in the interest of academic freedom and diversity. Those who do not want to attend are not free to stay away and those who do want to hear a “diverse” presentation should have the right to do so, as well. Start the signature campaign as an addendum along with the announcement of the “controversial” speaker, so it has time to circulate and gather signatures ahead of the anti-free-speech tyrants.

      1. ….and you’re surely experienced with your own propagandists, and your own advice….

While you try to sound wise, think about THIS: the only way to have any chance of breaking free of propaganda is to HEAR ALL sides and then decide for yourself. You can’t do this if you let others [and their petitions] decide for you, what you can and cannot hear.

Try harder to make sense rather than rely on one-liners….

      2. @mojaponica “Anyone who pays for propagandists deserves what they get.” AGREED!!!

We the People of the United States CREATED the Department of Education in 1979 (went live 1980 aka the Department of Indoctrination).
We the People of the United States are funding the Certified Indoctrination Organizations (e.g., US Tax Dollars of this Anathema in the University Mission).
We the People of the United States are funding the propagandists and indoctrinationists who are in control of our education systems (primary, secondary, post-secondary).
We the People of the United States are funding the division of America through the indoctrination process.

        WE DESERVE WHAT WE GET

  4. Turley claims: ” It was a wonderful opportunity for students to hear from one of the impactful voices in the media.” “impactful voices”? Weiss is MAGA. MAGA is poison–lies. MAGA is a cult devoted to a chronic, habitual liar, a misogynist, racist, convicted felon who seeks adulation, praise and glory, but who cuts off food to starving children, cuts off health insurance subsidies to millions of Americans, enacted illegal tariffs to get corporate CEOs and leaders of other countries to pay homage to him and give him gifts, and who lines his pockets from grifts he gets from cheating his way into office by lying. Taking the money that should go to support American causes, Trump created an army of gun toting thugs who abuse people, including US citizens, who kill protesters who are US citizens, and wants to create a system of large concentration camps surrounding major cities. Universities shouldn’t tolerate MAGA, Trump or anyone associated with either of them because they are antithetical to what universities stand for. The US Congress shouldn’t tolerate Trump, either. He wants to come to the Congress tonight, seeking applause and glory, and lie to the American people about nonexistent economic “success”, made up numbers, made up relations with other countries, and is trying to use the glory of the US Mens’ Hockey Team’s victory to contribute to his aggrandizement. Trump is repulsive. The majority of Americans are finally seeing the light.

Meanwhile, it turns out that Pammie Jo has buried witness reports to the FBI about Trump forcing a 13 year old girl to submit to oral sex. Epstein survivors will be in the audience tonight. He’ll lie about that, too, if he addresses it at all.

      1. Hey Farmer–don’t you know that such listings can be manipulated–MAGA oligarchs could pre-order lots of copies, which would then juice up the ratings, all to help sell Turley as a “best selling author”. Joe Kennedy did it with JFK”s first book. Number 1 on the NYT nonfiction best seller’s list — which is the list on which Turley’s book debuted–was and still is “Nobody’s Girl” by Virginia Roberts Giuffre. What does that tell you? It has held that spot for the past 17 weeks. Turley’s book slid to #11.

      2. Turley’s book “debuted” as #2 on the non fiction list, behind Virginia Roberts Giuffre’s book “Nobody’s Girl”, which has held the #1 spot for 17 weeks. AND, debut stats can be manipulated by an individual or group ordering large numbers of copies–it’s what Joe Kennedy did with JFK’s first book. Turley’s book immediately slid to #11.

    1. You think Bari Weiss is MAGA? That shows how little you know about her. For instance, if you read her Substack Common Sense (the vehicle that built her ascendance to lead CBS News), you wouldn’t make such a bs, know-nothing claim.

I’m growing tired of uninformed “opinion”.

      1. According to “Distractify”:

“Conservative journalist and former New York Times op-ed staff editor Bari Weiss is the new editor-in-chief of CBS News. The announcement was made in a letter to readers of The Free Press — the internet-based media company founded by the journalist — on Oct. 6, 2025.

The announcement came as a shock to many, as the journalist has no experience managing a TV newsroom, nor does she have experience operating and has never produced broadcast news, per Reuters. She is also a provocative voice known for her bias and “anti-woke” philosophy, and according to MSNBC News, The Free Press is a “Trump-friendly” website. She has also described herself as a “Zionist fanatic” and is “blindly” supportive of Israel’s genocide in Gaza, per The New Statesman….

Bari has accused mainstream media outlets of betraying standards and of losing sight of their principles, and yet her own media outlet is extremely critical of the left and “a hyperpartisan supporter of the Netanyahu government.” Despite being married to a woman and once calling herself a liberal, she appears to have adopted far-right ideology. Some wonder if she is bitter over her exit from The New York Times.

She left after the outlet ran an op-ed by Republican Senator Tom Cotton, who called for the military to respond “with force” after people protested the murder of George Floyd. Staffers at the Times protested the piece, and Bari took to Twitter (now X) and called the staffers “wokes.”

Yeah, Bari Weiss is MAGA and does not belong on a university campus environment, which would not be “blindly supportive” of genocide of the Palestinian people or having the military forcefully respond to people protesting the murder of George Floyd. Having her there would not be “a wonderful opportunity” to hear from an “impactful voice” in media. Turley is just trying to prop up Weiss’s credibilty by ignoring the reasons why she is not wanted.

    2. That 13 year old girl? That entire story was demonstrated to be phony many years ago. You’re simply too stupid to know it.

      1. “demonstrated phony”? By whom? Pammie Jo or Kashyip Patel? The complaints were never even investigated for obvious reasons.

        1. By the courts. She sued Trump 3 separate times and could not make a claim for when these alleged assaults took place that Trump was not able to prove he was thousands of miles away.

People make false claims about wealthy people all the time.

    3. No Weiss is not MAGA – not unless everyone not in the far left 20% of the country is MAGA.
Weiss is left of Center – just not woke left of center.

You clearly no absolutely nothing about her.
And what you think you know is all lies.

    4. The 13yr old nonsense was actually litigated years ago. The courts found there was no credible claim.
This person tried this claim in 3 different courts making 3 different claims or abuse.
All three failed because Trump was thousands of miles away at the time this person alleged she was assaulted.

DOJ/FBI have no reason to investigate something the courts already found to be a hoax.

I would note that this garbage was available to Merrit Garland for 4 years. It was available to Lorretta Lynch and Eric Older for 8.

If there was substance – it would have been investigated.

  5. “However, they will not be able to do so after a successful cancel campaign supported by faculty members.”

Read: “However, they will not be able to do so after a successful cancel campaign supported by [the Communist Party].”

  6. It is not easy being a journalist these days, I’m not talking about the don lemon type “journalists”. I mean ones that report the news.

    1. Presenters, don lemon. Journalists, Bari Weiss. The media, schools and other propaganda outlets confuse the two on purpose. A journalist is the person that did the research and writing of the article. The presenter is the person that mouths what the journalist did and presents the impression that he did the work.

  7. The REAL….ANATHEMA in the university mission:

    * to kill dialectical thought and stop dialogue which teaches critical thinking

    * to destroy understanding and compromise with “the other,” thus promote bias and closed-mindedness

    * to destroy the goals of science and learning by ending inquiry and making it both unattractive and dangerous

    * to Dumb-Down by reason of these most UN-collegial despotic absolutist policies.

SHAME. Margaret Peters, associate director of the Burkle Center, is an autocrat of the worst stripe and her student body is too dumbed-down to know it.

    1. @Dianna Bec

      Let us also remember:

*ignoring basic skills in favor of fealty to ideology.

We have people with master’s degrees that can’t spell or do basic algebra, though some of that falls on the primary grades, as well. This will only get worse as more AI enabled wearable devices come down the pipeline. I am certain that whenever the likes of AOC are actually able to complete a sentence they are listening through an earpiece. Prepare yourselves for some wild pronouncements when it’s an algorithm feeding them words.

And yes, stop kidding yourselves, older folks: this has all infiltrated the sciences and business education etc., too. There is literally no respite in the university setting, even in the reddest of places. It is in community colleges. It is everywhere, and it’ll take a termite-level fumigation to fix it.

      1. @James: you completed the list with absolute understanding of the FULCRUM and its primacy:

        * ignoring basic skills in favor of fealty to ideology [ !!! ]

      2. James,
Had a funny thought reading your comment and “wild pronouncements.” The old computer adage of “garbage in, garbage out.” Might be able to spoof AI by putting massive amounts of garbage out for AI to pick up on and make “wild pronouncements.” Be a lot of fun to see AOC or Newsome say something like,
“Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?”

Just recently some Congressman put up a big picture of Pertti getting shot. It was a very bad AI fake. The gun angle was all wrong and the one ICE LEO, was missing his head. And yet people believe it. Later when his office was questioned about using the fake, the Congressman’s staff just said it was slightly edited.

        1. @Upstate

Honestly, I think that’s inevitable; in a closed feedback loop, such as is the nature of algorithms which simply continually eat and regurgitate a pool of data they have been fed, data rot will just happen. It will. that is just 1s and 0s and math, it has nothing to with anything but the nature of the beast, and that is its nature – mathematics, which is invariable. Period.

What humans do alongside is another matter, and that is what we are facing, IMO, as ever, the unethical humans, this is not new, just a different skin. Still: it can make an idiot like AOC sound as though she is speaking from a place of cognizance even though she is essentially an actress. This is something it would behoove us all to educate ourselves about and pay attention to in the future, because it is in use whether we like it or not, it will only escalate, and not everyone is savvy in this regard, no offense intended to anyone. Most people have more pressing things to pay attention to, but this is kind of a big deal. Thankfully the backlash is coming in hard.

And as a personal opinion: modern Silicon Valley no longer innovates, they also simply regurgitate and ride on the back of other people’s hard work and vision. They used to empower people, now they just enable. There has not been parity, generationally. Not even close. I struggle to find a single gadget, in the pipeline from any SV company, including Apple, that actually empowers rather than just makes people less capable of dealing with reality or being functionally human, and often at the cost of efficiency, as well.

  8. . UCLA must be existential or nihilist philosophically. Rejection of the Constitution as valid law is part of that. The government in California is merely a mix of mafia-state, kleptocracy by political system.

Don’t go there if there’s a personal objection or employ a UCLA grad journalist if an employer. Censorship is part of freedom and can be imposed meaningfully.

The first amendment in its speech, press and assemble for debate peacefully is not part of the program.

Thank you, PT, for exposing UCLA’s philosophy. They’re ready to back that up via 2A with violence.

    1. . ^^^^ The use of cannot secure safety is a form of terrorism. Rifles are also used directly as in Charlie Kirk murder and DJT assassination attempts. Saying I’ll quit my job is merely I’ll hold my breath, mommy. Please do.

      1. . Click on Margaret Peter’s from the article. Her hardbound book regarding global trade and immigration, migration barriers is $115.00 dollars, Princeton Press.

  9. Faculty members in higher education continue to demonstrate that those who can’t do teach, while at the same time, prevent/prohibit others from doing.

  10. “The Daniel Pearl Memorial Lecture is in honor of the WSJ reporter who was captured and beheaded while working in Pakistan.”

    I remember that.

Given that founding motivation, I think I’ve found the best possible keynote speaker for the event. Granted, she isn’t real, but she is far more coherent and relevant than anyone the Lefties could forward for the job.

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3WK4xTvgHGw

    “Sod off, Paki wankers!”

  11. As a UCLA alum I long ago stopped donating primarily due to intolerance as displayed in this decision to disinvite someone with an opposing viewpoint.

  12. With Diverse precedents of entertaining abortive ideation to relieve “burdens”, a critical mass of liberal voices Planned protests that would force [catastrophic] [anthropogenic] climate change, thus creating a hostile environment. A sanctuary state where the risk could not be remedied without additional force and expense.

  13. Prof. Turley leaves out some context. The Daniel Pearl Memorial Lecture is in honor of the WSJ reporter who was captured and beheaded while working in Pakistan. Mr. Pearl is a symbol for fearlessness in reporting, and much has been written on him. For Ms. Peters to cravenly deny a voice in the press to be heard in this lecture is dishonoring to Mr. Pearl.

    From Wikipedia:
The Daniel Pearl Memorial Lecture at UCLA was established by the foundation in 2002. Christopher Hitchens delivered a lecture on March 3, 2010. Other lecturers have included Anderson Cooper, David Brooks, Ted Koppel, Larry King, Jeff Greenfield, Daniel Schorr, and Thomas Friedman.

  14. I remember a game called Propaganda where you won points if you could recognize the specific fallacy in an argument (e.g. appeal to authority, ad hominem, etc.). It wasn’t such a fun game, but it was educational and memorable (from 50+ years ago). In that English & writing courses are to teach reasoned thought and expression; this seems like a great time to bring back this idea. It would not be hard to do. You could do this as a Bingo card in the comments section here, as one example!

    1. HEAR, HEAR – We could also use effective Legal Training (e.g., Law School) as a proper harbor for that approach – and the understanding of Logos, Ethos, and Pathos as fundamental infrastructure of rhetorical argument.

  15. We know how she got her job, and that she has no ethics, journalistic or otherwise. Only connections to the Zio imperialist gangsters got her the gig, and she’s simply boring, weird, and incompetent. We’re not buying news from well-funded liars.

    1. We know? How is it that you think “we (all) know” how she got the job? You karens always ruin everything.

      1. X is also prone to the “everybody knows…” commie rhetoric. he thinks we won’t see through it.
It’s the result of “group think”, meaning: “Don’t you want to go along with everybody?”
Everyone knows X is an idiot. see how that works?

    2. You could not be more wrong.
She left the NYT, went on to create a newsletter called Common Sense. It was so successful she then turned it into The Free Press. At last count it has some two million paying subscribers. I am one of them.
David Ellison, CEO of Paramount Skydance, hired her to be the editor-in-chief of CBS news to help clean CBS news up. Reportedly she is experiencing internal conflicts with a leftist newroom.
Weiss’s newsroom is one of the most diverse of the independent media.

    3. If what you claimed was True – that would still be irrelevant.

This is not just about the right to free speech it is about the extremely important benefits to free speech – particularly hearing the arguments you disagree with the most presented by their strongest advocates.

Weiss is a bit pro israel for my tastes – but she is still an absolutely fantastic journalist who has not only been an outspoken voice for a free press AND for objective journalism.

Weiss is exactly the right person to be speaking and the effort to cancel her is the proof that she needs to be heard at UCLA

If this professor wished to resign – that is her choice. People who seek to suppress views they do not like – should not be heading anything at any university anywhere.

    4. She “got her job” by leaving NYT and starting her own independent media outlet, building it to something worth over 100M,
And being hired by CBS to try to turn a failing MSM outlet arround – because she had SUCCESSFULLY built her own media empire that SUCCESSFULY appealed to both the left and the right.

And the last thing any left wing journalism school wants students to hear is:

If you buy the journalism is advocacy crap you are being taught – you will be competing with myriads of other graduates for a shrinking number of jobs. If you actually figure out how to be objective in your journalism and gain the trust and respect of all but the most extreme – you can succeed – possibly wildly in journalism today.

Bari Weiss has been incredibly successful because she iis relatively objective and center left in her own advocacy.

Except as it relates to Israel she leans about as far left as you can be – without being Woke.

      1. Please keep displaying your ignorance. Weiss has NEVER been a political commentator. To the extent she is even political at all she is on the left just shy of woke, except on issues related to Israel. But for the most part she is a REAL journalist. She has been reporting stories objectively – possibly longer than you have been alive. She has likely done more investigative journalism than anyone on 60 minutes today.
Further she has built her own broadcast media empire that is worth $100M – which BTW is likely more than CBS news is worth.
The entirety of CBS i only worth $12B

We live in the internet age – before you say open your mouth and repeat some stupid nonsense you heard from sources that have burned their credibility to the ground – do your own research – it has never been easier.

Bari WEiss has more jounalistic credibility than the entirety of CBS news. Hiring her was not just an effort to leverage her skills to build a large audience it was also to attract people BECAUSE he has credibility with people from right to left outside the extremes.
The owners of CBS bought someone they are betting can save CBS news, but they also bought a massive increase in credibility.

      2. Guess you haven’t noticed this yet, but ALL news today is nothing but political commentary. Especially, coming from the extreme-left with their many axes to grind: you can’t hear any fact at all without them coloring it, telling you what-and-how to think and feel about it….

    1. Book editor?

Bari Weiss is an American journalist, writer, and media entrepreneur with a career spanning major publications and a prominent role in shaping contemporary media discourse.

Early Life & Education: Born on March 25, 1984, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Weiss is a proud Pittsburgh native and a graduate of Columbia University (2007), where she majored in history. She founded The Current, a Columbia magazine on Jewish politics and culture, and spent a gap year in Israel working on a medical clinic and studying at a feminist yeshiva.
      Career Highlights:

The Wall Street Journal (2013–2017): Served as op-ed and book review editor, known for her conservative-leaning perspective.
The New York Times (2017–2020): Joined as an opinion staff editor and writer, becoming one of the most prominent conservative voices on the paper’s opinion page. She was named Vanity Fair’s “star opinion writer” in 2019.

Resignation & Founding The Free Press (2020–present): Resigned in July 2020, citing a hostile work environment and the influence of social media on editorial decisions. She launched Common Sense, which evolved into The Free Press, a subscription-based media company. She is the founder and editor of The Free Press and hosts the podcast Honestly.
International Columnist: Since March 2021, she has been a regular columnist for Die Welt, the German daily newspaper.
CBS News (2025–present): Appointed Editor-in-Chief of CBS News in October 2025 following Paramount Skydance’s acquisition of The Free Press. She oversees editorial strategy across TV, digital, audio, and social platforms, reporting directly to Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison.
      Publications & Recognition:

Author of How to Fight Anti-Semitism (2019), winner of the National Jewish Book Award.
Winner of the 2018 Reason Foundation Bastiat Prize and the 2021 Daniel Pearl Award for Courage and Integrity in Journalism.
Personal Life: Married to former New York Times reporter Nellie Bowles; the couple has two children. She identifies as a bi woman and is a vocal pro-Israel advocate.

      Book editor you?

        1. Generally building a broad cast empire worth $100M – more than CBS News is worth at a time when the MSM is declining is broadcast management experience.

      1. The claim she is conservative leaning is FALSE. She is center left – just shy of Woke.

What she is NOT is biased. She is exactly the right person to speak to journalism students about objectivity, neutrality, presenting all sides,
She has also succeed in media at a time when most of the media is failing,
and she has succeeded as a voice from the center left when MOST media success stories are from the right.

Weiss is the best hope for the MSM to avoid further decline and irrelevance.

    2. BS. She has built her own media empire from scratch in only a few years.
      She is a successful journalist
      Successful newpaper Editor,
Successful multi-media alternate media magnate – with her own empire that SHE build from scratch in a few years worth over 100M.

Roughly speaking she is the lefts version of Ben Shapiro – with experience in pretty much ALL of Media

While CBS itself is worth about 10 times what her own empire is, CBS News specifically is worth signifcantly LESS than the media empire she has created.

And she has EXTENSIVE broadcast experience. She has been broadcasting her own show plus managing those of several others for about a decade.

Those of you on the left repeat stupid idiocy they have heard.

She has probably PERSONALLY done more investigative journalist stories than anyone on 50 minutes.
      And managed many more.

Regardless if you are at CBS – SHE IS THE BOSS, She will be fired if she does not save CBS by expanding its audience.
She is accountable to the owners for that – and that is why she was hired,
If you are at CBS and wish to keep your job – you had better first do as she directs, and next pray that she succeeds,
      Because the alternative is bankruptcy.

If you can not live with that – Find some outher dying left wing MSM media establishment that will hire you.

I would note that While Weiss is leading the effort at CBS – MOST of the MSM is striving against idiots to do exactly the same.

Note to the woke in media – either the MSM figures out how to restore much larger audiences, or it dies.
You had better get on board and hope that they succeed rather than obstructing, because if the MSM fails,
your next Boss could be Ben Shapiro. The media as a whole has a significant over supply of left wing nuts and a shortage or other points of view,
and expecially objective journalists that people trust.

How can you tell ? Easy, look what is succeeding and what is not.

  16. Reading the comments, there seems to be some question over how the speech cancellation came to pass.
Obviously, some UCLA students, 11K out of 48K (23%) wanted the speech cancelled, and signed a petition.

The Bari Weiss security team and UCLA Admin could not reach agreement about security arrangements.
The Weiss team, failing to obtain assurances of adequate event security, backed out of the event.

Is this a factual rundown? (for those of us more interested in facts than taking sides)

    1. pbinca,
Actually I believe you have a concise summary of what has transpired that we know of.
You bring up a very good point: What were the security measures/assurances they could not agree upon?

      1. You believe? Neither you (simp) or pbinca were present. And you spend your entire day doing this nonsense?

    2. Pbinca, sort of. Barry Weiss’ security team may have been demanding more than what the University deemed appropriate for the event. That does not mean they were denying her the ability to hold the event. The university cannot be expected to provide something close to presidential level of security for Weiss and it is not obligated to.

Ultimately it is Weiss’s choice, not the university.

11,000 people signing a petition objecting to Weiss having her event is not a denial of her rights. It’s a civil objection that the university is not obligated to honor. It is not also intimidation as some seem to claim it is. It’s a civil free speech protest.

The fact remains that the university made every effort to accommodate Weiss. It was ultimately her choice whether to continue and take the risk or cancel. The “mob” did not coerce the university or the professor’s threat to resign made them cancel the event.

Turley implies the “mob” forced the university to cancel. That is not factual.

      1. Where in ANY of your constant defenses of irrationality is there ever ANY promotion of responsibility and equal-time?!?!?!

You say, and with quite a bit of arrogance: “It’s a civil objection that the university is not obligated to honor.”

Listen, Marxo-fascist, “civil objection” actually works like this: if you don’t like the speaker, DON’T GO!!!!! But you must let others have a chance at making the choice for themselves, and not give full-control over everyone else to the weak-brains that can’t handle difference and objections.

      2. “Pbinca, sort of. Barry Weiss’ security team may have been demanding more than what the University deemed appropriate for the event. ”
Possibly – but the security required for any speaker not on the far left to speak at a California public University is well documents.
We have dozens of examples of protestors – often not student roiting over speeches by people they do not like and doing hundreds of millions in property damage.

The courts have long ago ruled that public universities MUST allow free speech, and that they CAN not attempt to pass the cost or burden of security to the speaker. That is less true at private colleges and not true at all at private institutions.

      3. “That does not mean they were denying her the ability to hold the event. The university cannot be expected to provide something close to presidential level of security for Weiss and it is not obligated to.”
False public universities are REQUIRED to provide whatever security is needed.

Ben Shapiro spoke a few years ago at UCB and had to go to court to assure his right to speak as well as to force the university to provide sufficient security. Ben won Easily because there are decades old precidents on this – dating back to the 60’s

While Weiss does not how the power to dictate what level of security their will be, the University is responsible for any harm that occurs if something happens.

      4. i would just note – this “security” ruse is not new, and the courts addressed is decades ago.

At a public forum for free speech – and guest speeches at public universities meet that requirement,
The government (a public university is a government actor) can not impose on the surface neutral burdens on speakers that result in view point discrimination.

Attempts by govenrment to charge fees that limit access – including security fees have been shot down by the courts LONG AGO.
Near universally in cases bought by the almost non-existant today “free speech left” – in fact some of them involved the University of California system. The university free speech movement started at UCB in the 60’s by the left.

People like Derschowitz and Turley who are on the left, but also advocates of free speech are the last vestigges of the free speech movement from the left from the 60’s.

Regardles UCD can not precule Weiss from Speaking, and they MUST provide adequate security for the event.
Weis may have chosen not to speak, but she COULD have chosen to go to court – and she would have won – easily,
        As Ben Shapiro did.

      5. “11,000 people signing a petition objecting to Weiss having her event is not a denial of her rights. It’s a civil objection that the university is not obligated to honor. It is not also intimidation as some seem to claim it is. It’s a civil free speech protest.”
Correct, but the university is required to allow Weiss to speak and to provide adequate security for her to do so.
Even if every student on campus signed a petition opposing her.

“The fact remains that the university made every effort to accommodate Weiss. ”
Irrelevant, they are obligated to provide sufficient security, if Weiss beleives thay have failed to do so – she can as she has chosen decide not to speak. Or she can as Ben Shapiro chose, to go to court and get a court order requiring UCD to provide adequate security.
UCD does not have the choice not to provide adequate security. They are a government actor in the context of free speech.
They are not permitted to create a burden that constitutes viewpoint discrimination.
They are obligated to provide adequate security, Weiss could have gone to court to get an order to do so.
Further if WEiss had chosen to go forward and anything happened as a result of inadequate security – whoever was harmed could sue the University for damages due to inadequate security.

Public colleges can not hide behind security as a means to engage in viewpoint discrimination.

My Guess is that Weiss has different interests that Shapiro, that she does not have the time to reschedule – as likely would be necescary if she had to get a court order, and that Weiss unlike Shapiro is not seeking to be the poster person for free speech on Campuses.

Given the lefts recent assassination of Charlie Kirk it is likely that the courts would take the demands of ANY controversial speaker for security on a public campus extremely seriously.

“It was ultimately her choice whether to continue and take the risk or cancel.”
Sorry X – not how the law works.

There is a snowballs chance in h311 that had weis gone to court to demand more security that the courts would not have ordered that demand met. There is not a federal court today that would want to rule against security for a controversial speaker an risk that something very bad happens.

If Weiss cancelled over security – either there was not sufficient time and she could not rechedule, or she is not seeking the same high profile on free speech on campus as Ben Shapiro.

” The “mob” did not coerce the university or the professor’s threat to resign made them cancel the event.”
Of course they did – that was EXACTLY the message that was transmitted by Charlie Kirk’s assassination.
and restated every single time some left wing nut talks about murdering people they diasgree with – something that happens all the time.
In fact there have been numerous arrests of left wing nuts who have threatened to kill ICE officers or others that disagree with them.
These mostly do not make the left wing news – but they happen all the time – dozens of them.

While this was an arrest for ACTING rather than threatening DOJ recently convicted a quaker who threw rocks at ICE officers in portland, striking one on the head, and later used a steel post to break doors and windows at the Portland federal court.

Proving the left is dangerous to those it opposes is Trivial.

“Turley implies the “mob” forced the university to cancel. That is not factual.”
No what is true is the “mob” forced the cancelation, and the university was constitutionally obligated to prevent that.
