Before the State of the Union, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) joined other leaders in promising Americans that the Democrats will unleash a revenge tour after taking power in November, pledging to start throwing Trump people in jail when they retake Congress. Murphy went on MS NOW to feed the rage addiction that has taken over his party.
We recently discussed how Susan Rice joined the mob in stating that “When it comes to the elites, you know, the corporate interests, the law firms, the universities, the media … it’s not going to end well for them.”
She followed other Democrats, assuring voters that, if they returned Democrats to power, they would crack down on their political opponents.
Republicans and law enforcement are now regularly called “Nazis” and “fascists” by Democratic leaders. Some are promising arrests from the President to individual police officers. Last week, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner promised to “hunt down” ICE officers like “Nazis.” Democratic strategist James Carville previously threatened that “collaborators” may be treated in the same way as they were after World War II.
Gov. Tim Walz, who has called ICE officers “Gestapo,” said that this may be our “Fort Sumter” moment, a triggering event for a civil war that killed hundreds of thousands of Americans.
Democratic members have been warned that they have to join the mob or be devoured by it. Bravo star and liberal podcast host Jennifer Welch praised footage of a “No Kings” protester celebrating the death of Charlie Kirk. After playing the clip, Welch laughed with joy and declared, “So listen up, Democratic establishment. You can either jump on board with this s—, or we’re coming after you in the same way that we come after MAGA. Period.”
Murphy clearly got the message and added his voice in declaring that “they’re going to get their clocks cleaned this November, and a bunch of people are probably gonna end up going to jail.”
It is a curious pledge, since the Democrats could retake the House and Senate in November. That would not give them the ability to throw people into jail even if they had actual crimes to charge.
What is clear is that the Democratic Party has now decided to try to ride the rage wave to power, leading the mob with such reckless rhetoric. In “Rage and the Republic: The Unfinished Story of the American Revolution,” I explore the rise of what I call the “new Jacobins,” establishment figures who are calling for radical changes to our constitutional system and for retaliation against political opponents. It is a book about revolutions and how they can consume those who start them.
These Democratic politicians will learn this lesson from history that they are likely to be devoured by the very mobocracy that they are unleashing through rage politics.
I watched the C-SPAN coverage, and it was a masterful political performance. The President, instead of threatening Dems with lawfare, shamed and embarrassed them by daring them to stay seated while saying “the Govt.’s priorities are the wellbeing of its citizens, not illegal immigrants”. The cutaway shots showed individual Dems seething in being boxed in, humiliated so tactically.
Trump went on from there with a set of proposals for legislation that further isolated and shamed, but the “solidarity” of the Dem caucus held for things like legislating SAVE and insider trading. C-SPAN cutaway to a feeble, embarrassed looking Nancy Pelosi during the insider-trading jab.
Gradually, a few independent-minded Dems began standing during some of these “tests”, for instance the TrumpAccounts for babies, TrumpRx lowering prescription drugs, and banning corporate buyouts of single family dwellings. The way Trump broke the “solidarity” of the Dem caucus was a political master-stroke. By the end of the speech, he had all Dems (except a few most brittle haters) standing, in support of the military hero of the Venezuela operation, and a Korean War pilot. This forced Mark Kelly to stand in respect for military heroism.
The diffident, disrespectful behavior of the Dems, e.g., recognizing the young woman who was taken by the state away from her parents because they didn’t support her gender reassignment by powerful others — caused Trump to label the Dems as “crazy”. It was very effective theater. The Dems were stunned and forced into a corner bereft of common sense. This strengthened Trump’s assertion at the end that Dems are not prepared to lead the country in a sane direction, still burdened by their “woke” neuroses. Yet, Trump was measured and in-control — he did not frame the Dems as irredeemable. He did not rule out reform within the Dem Party. That was Presidential, and indicated a level of restraint and reserve.
Trump goes off the rails verbally when feeling insecure. Last night, you could tell he felt totally in-control, and that’s when he’s at his best.
