Happy Easter and Passover!!!

Happy Easter to everyone celebrating the holiday today.  Despite my kids being older, the bunny still came to the Turley house and left baskets overflowing with their favorite chocolates and candies, including a doggie basket for Luna.

We are “double dippers” who celebrate Passover and Easter. Growing up in a Jewish neighborhood of Chicago, it was probably inevitable that I would marry the best Jewish cook that I have ever known. For the seder, Leslie rendered a chicken and made Matzo ball soup that was “like buttah.” She also made brisket, Apple Kugel, and latkes. Leslie also made her great Grandma Dot’s famous Sponge Cake and chocolate-covered Matzo. It was divine.

We will celebrate Easter tonight with my family’s traditional lamb, saffron rice, and other dishes. We have an Easter Egg cake, a carrot cake,  and other desserts to go with the horn-o-plenty left by the bunny.

Best wishes to everyone today and I hope that you can spend time with your friends and loved ones.

Happy Easter and Passover!

  1. Happy Easter everyone!

Enjoyed a good, easy dinner: Baked mackerel with carrots and seared bok choi in a balsamic vinegar/ginger/honey/red pepper glaze. Watched “Barabbas” with Anthony Quinn

    1. Sounds wickedly delightful, luxuriously rich and sinfully stimulating: mackerel baked until the skin crackles and the flesh melts. You can hear the laughter

  2. It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain

  3. Happy Easter Professor. Always enjoy the column and sometimes the comments. Being from a family that was both Jewish and Christian and a Business that has Jewish, Christian and Muslim colleagues has given me a chance at a great deal of new knowledge and experience.
I look forward to your views each day.

    1. JONATHAN IS A PRECIOUS GIFT TO AMERICA AND THE WORLD. VERY, VERY FEW HAVE HIS WISDOM, HIS ETHICS, HIS INTELLECT, HIS WILLINGNESS TO SHARE SO MUCH INFORMATION ON THE LAW, FOR FREE. HE IS AMAZING.

I LOVE THE WAYS WHICH WOK’S JEALOUSY RUNS RAMPANT ON THE SITE HE MAKES AVAILABLE, EVEN TO THE FILTHY SCUM

AN ABRAHAM LINCOLN FIGURE TO BE SURE

  4. The “kingdom of god”,which Jesus said that he was sent to proclaim “the good news of”(Luke 4:43),will destroy earth’s destroyers(Rev.11:18),refurbish the earth & end death (Rev.21:3-5),& resurrect everyone since Eden(Daniel 12:2/Rev.20:4-6),was predicted to be the 4th “kingdom to rise sequentially from Babylon with disunited people& divided rule.-Daniel 2:33-44! 100+ last day prophecies have been fulfilled!

  5. My sister, who couldn’t be more secular, who hates all religions with passion, married a non-practicing Jewish man. About 3 years into their marriage, she pauses one day and says, “You know, I think the Jews are the Chosen People.” Indeed, they are. They are the most talented, the most intelligent, the most gifted and the best at a variety of things. It is so obvious, unless your jealousy blocks out reality. THAT is the reason for antisemitism. Jealousy and envy.

    1. Zionist Shillbot. Can’t just let the thread be simple. “Hey everyone, we’re God’s chosen because we said so! Never forget!” Soooo boring. Soooo predictable. Looking a little desperate lately, your polling sliding as Americans wake up, even as your propaganda budget ramps up. Greensplatt spying on Americans and threatening FBI action. Future uncertainty increasing. Plenty of Trump voters don’t like you. Wake up, America: free your minds.

      1. I think in both posts there is a misunderstanding of what the “Chosen” people really means in the tradition. It had more to do with that the people didn’t at the time have a god; has nothing to do with a belief in superiority. Happy Easter and Passover.

        1. And that definition is just fine. Let’s take this piece of it

“Jewish tradition emphasizes that being chosen is not a privilege, but a call to service and ethical living.”

Given Israel’s many abuses of the United States(Epstein, USS Liberty, Lavon, possibly Charlie Kirk and more) I think we need to strictly separate the terms Jewish and Zionist. Despising zionists is not antisemitic. Cheers to the failure of Greater Israel!

          So, Happy Easter, Americans

          1. Being chosen is to be chosen for a duty that an individual Jew doesn’t have to do, and a non-Jew can do. There is no earthly reward or penalty.

Observant Jews believe in the Torah and that in Genesis God said he created man in his own image. He didn’t create groups or say Jews were created in a better or different image; rather, we are the same. That means Old Fish and Schwartz are born the same. Neither is better than the other. Mishnah Sanhedrin 4:5: “And it was also for the sake of peace among mankind, that none should say to his fellow, ‘My father was greater than your father.’

If all men were born from Adam as equals, then no nation is superior, but each nation has the same natural rights to defend itself. Therefore, Israel doesn’t claim to be better but has to defend itself and its sovereignty. That is what all nations do. Without classifying you, I think as an American, you want to put America First, as do I and many people, but by doing it in the right way. Along the way, America has made mistakes, as has Israel, France, Great Britain, and Germany. Let’s treat all countries as equal without creating double standards, making sure that we place blame on all, not just one.

            Happy Easter Old Fish

            1. God called Abraham to leave his home for a new land (Canaan), promising to make him a great nation, make his name great, and bless those who blessed him

“I will make you into a great nation,
              and I will bless you;
I will make your name great..”

I will bless those who bless you,
              and whoever curses you I will curse;
              and all peoples on earth
              will be blessed through you.”

CHOSEN FOR GREAT, IMMEASURABLE, FREQUENT SUFFERING

            2. Epstein etal crossed a line that cannot be uncrossed. Expose everything and see where it leads, both literally and figuratively. Too many secrets festering and poisoning everything.

              1. Epstein was a bad person. He has a Jewish name from which you can attach nothing. Albert Einstein and many other Nobel Prize winners for physics have Jewish names far out of proportion to all other people. What do you wish to garner from that?

I would like Epstein totally exposed, but he is dead. and the records are open to all of Congress to view. We have a problem; with all the papers existing, there are so many names, we don’t know what to do with them. They are innocent people with a few guilty ones who should be prosecuted if they broke the law. Should all the names be released? I understand that one of the papers discussed Epstein and Old Fish on the same page. I think it came from a Chinese take-out service when they wrote the names down on paper so they knew who ordered what. Is there anything there we need to know about?

                1. wrt Epstein and his backers you are being disingenuous. The little red herring smells bad.

                  1. What an a h .
                    Zionism?
The greatest people on earth drives her demon of murder to erupt exactly where her heart is.

                    Jealousy. Envy.

Possibly Mary Magdalene. Possibly Peter Pan

                  2. You call me disingenuous, yet you rely on the same tired archetypes. Before Epstein, who was your excuse? Those who seek to hate simply rotate the cast of characters to fit the script.

You see a Jewish name with money and influence and immediately pivot to ‘spy.’ It is a lazy leap. Perhaps he simply made powerful people uncomfortable for reasons far more mundane than international intrigue.

Since you are obsessed with ‘codes,’ I looked at your own name: Old Fish. Old like the Testament, Fish like Jonah. Is that your Mossad handle? Or are you just repeating ancient tropes while waiting for the next name to blame?”

                    1. S. Meyer,
Prior to Epstein I was ambivalent about the subject. I pretty much passively accepted the narratives surrounding Israel and jews and thought the US was generally doing the right thing supporting Israel.

American Jewish people I’ve known and worked with were just people. Israelis seemed a bit arrogant and had a more in-your-face style. Not the same as Americans.

Epstein plus evidence of active narrative manipulation, for me, crossed a line that cannot be uncrossed, ever. Israel cannot be trusted.

Keep in mind that Islam is, to me, entirely incompatible with the USA and while it does look like Israel is sometimes more brutal than is needed to defend itself, I have no dog in that fight in the ME.

Also, keep in mind that I am in no way a Christian. A, ir, un, and, occasionally, anti as far as religion is concerned.

You are free to interpret information and events as you please, as am I.

                    2. “You are free to interpret information and events as you please,”

And I do, Old Fish, but you can see that I accept you in good faith. We probably have a lot of agreement. For instance, you find “Israelis a bit arrogant,” and they are, in part because they have to be. If you look at where they live in the Middle East, and have lived for over 3,000 years, you see a population of almost 500 million people, where only about 7 million are Jews.

The odds are tremendously against their survival, as they were when their war of independence began without an army, air force, or heavy weapons. Five nations attacked: Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon, along with irregular forces. Let that sit for a moment, because many wars followed with those same disproportionate odds.

I understand why you might perceive the tactics as brutal. But the reality is the opposite; their ratio of civilians to combatants killed is remarkably low because they prioritize saving civilian lives, even when it means more Israeli soldiers die to keep the targeting precise. That restraint prolonged the war. If it were me, I might have leveled the entire area in a week to force an end, but Israel refuses to bomb the hospitals or schools that Hamas uses as launch sites. They will not shoot and bomb indiscriminately, and when mistakes happen, they are investigated.

In WWII and Vietnam, we killed many more civilians than the Israelis have. So did the British and the French. The media distorts the news, but when the IRGC killed 30,000 people in a single day, the world stayed silent. That is a flagrant double standard.

Epstein was a pig who likely blackmailed many prominent people. I wish he were alive so the full truth could come out. I hope you continue to have amicable relations with your Jewish friends and neighbors.

          2. Under Clinton, a Jew?, we used satellite-guided bombs on the Embassy of China, Belgrade, FR Yugoslavia, killing three Chinese journalists and injuring twenty-seven others, known in China as the May 8 incident

        1. Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.

  6. Tis the season for Easter and Passover to softly usher in remembrance, prayer, peace and harmony.

  7. Happy Easter to all! I am not particularly religious, but I have come to very much appreciate our cultural traditions (particularly in these turbulent times) and Easter has always been one of those. I have fond memories, going back well over 70 years, of my parents dressing up in their “Sunday best” (and making me do the same, which I wasn’t much of a fan of at that time) and taking the family to the Atlantic City Boardwalk to stroll n the Easter Parade. Sadly, that is a tradition that seems to have vanished almost completely.

  8. Happy Easter and passover. Next week is orthodox Easter as it follows the passover calendar, happy early Easter to you.

The reason for the season. 🐰

  9. God bless you and your dear family, Jonathan.
Thank you for bring an invaluable patriot!

  10. Best wishes to you and your family.
Thanks for providing such a great place for people to express themselves.
