I am having a tough week. I was recently compelled to write a column expressing skepticism about the prosecution of former FBI Director James Comey for shell art posted on social media, despite being one of his longest and most vocal critics. Now, I find myself having to write a column in defense of former Northwestern University President Morton Schapiro, who was just dumped as the commencement speaker for Georgetown Law School. I have criticized Schapiro for years as a major force in destroying the intellectual diversity in higher education. The problem with believing in free speech is that you have to believe in free speech even for those whose speech you abhor. The irony in both cases is crushing. Comey, who targeted President Donald Trump in a baseless Russian collusion investigation manufactured by the Clinton campaign, is now complaining about lawfare against him.Schapiro is even less compelling as a victim in a cancel campaign. While Northwestern president, Schapiro pandered to the left and showed little support for free speech on campus. Schapiro denounced what he called “absolute” free speech positions and endorsed speech sanctions, including treating speech as a form of assault.
Under Schapiro, a wide array of speech was deemed “microaggressive” or intolerable in the interests of harmony and inclusion. He did little to quell the viewpoint intolerance at Northwestern and the virtual purging of faculty ranks of conservative or Republican faculty.
Now the mob has come for Schapiro.
He was selected to speak at the law school commencement and immediately triggered an outcry. A Jewish academic, Schapiro is viewed as pro-Israel. He was immediately labeled a “Zionist” and an offensive choice by students and faculty.
A petition called on the administration to remove Schapiro, stating “Schapiro is not a lawyer, has no connection to Georgetown, and holds controversial, Zionist, and harmful opinions.”
Of course, past commencement speakers such as Henry Louis Gates Jr. were also non-lawyers with no connection to Georgetown, but there were no protests. That was just last year.
Every year, commencements remain a virtual lock for liberal and Democratic speakers. After eliminating most conservative faculty members from departments, universities have made commencements the final lessons of ideological indoctrination for students.
This year’s speakers include figures ranging from Nancy Pelosi (Notre Dame de Namur University) to Jamie Raskin (American University and Goucher College) to candidates like James Talarico (Paul Quinn College). There is no subtlety in their selection or their messages. As expected, Pelosi slammed the GOP and Trump while Talarico gave effectively a stump speech on fighting the billionaires.
Schapiro fits within the narrow ideological bandwidth of permissible liberal speakers with one notable complication: he supports Israel.
Accordingly, Schapiro was unceremoniously dumped and replaced with a Georgetown law professor who has opposed investigations into antisemitism on campuses.
For his part, Schapiro wrote campus leaders: “I have presided over 28 commencements as a president and dean, and those ceremonies are about celebrating the graduates and their supporters. I was looking forward to giving a talk about humility and gratitude, but I don’t want my presence to distract from the day’s festivities. I wish the law school graduates the best of luck in the days ahead.”
It was a gracious and mature response to an adolescent and irrational campaign.
It was, regrettably, the product of the very same cringing-concession policies I previously criticized Schapiro for enabling at Northwestern.
During his tenure, the university abandoned academic integrity and control to student mobs. One example that I previously discussed involved a Sociology class taught by Professor Beth Redbird that examined “inequality in American society with an emphasis on race, class and gender.” Redbird invited both an undocumented person and a spokesperson for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement. It was precisely the type of balanced discussion that we once valued in higher education, exposing students to vastly different views to allow them to consider the underlying social and political realities.
Various student groups organized protests to stop their fellow students from hearing from the ICE representative. They were greatly assisted by the university itself. As protesters screamed “F**k ICE” outside of the hall, the Dean of Students appeared and told these students that they would be allowed into the class if they promised not to disrupt it. The university simply asked them to stop screaming profanities and told Redbird that they promised to sit quietly in her class.
Of course, they immediately stopped the class, the ICE official had to be removed, and Redbird was forced to cancel her class. What was most unnerving was not just the passivity of Northwestern (which took no action against the students) but also the sense of entitlement at the university that prevented others from speaking.
Sophomore April Navarro rejected the notion that faculty should be allowed to invite such speakers to their classrooms for a “good, nice conversation with ICE.” She added, “We’re not interested in having those types of conversations … We’re not engaging in those kinds of things; it legitimizes ICE’s violence, it makes Northwestern complicit in this.”
Now, it is Schapiro himself being canceled.
In Rage and the Republic, I write about how academic and political figures are ignoring history as they pander to radical groups. Democratic leaders like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries believe that they can ride a rage wave back into power. What they ignore is how these revolutions ultimately “devour their own.” Today’s revolutionaries become tomorrow’s reactionaries.
Schapiro is only the latest victim of viewpoint intolerance in higher education. Of course, his detractors can quote Schapiro himself in dismissing objections as reducing free speech to mere “slogans or free speech at all costs.” It appears that he is now one of the prohibitive costs to be avoided in our academic echo chamber.
Jonathan Turley is a law professor and the best-selling author of “Rage and the Republic: The Unfinished Story of the American Revolution.”
This column also ran on Fox.com
Best Line of the Day: ‘Today’s revolutionaries become tomorrow’s reactionaries’ We’ve already seen this happening.. when you go so far Left, to the most extreme edge, as these Pols of the obama & little obama (aka jeffries) constellations have done.. you’ve finally arrived at the final 360th degree of the circle and now are forced to cross over to the 1st degree.. welcome to Reactionaryism… so very clear they are now operating from there…
The liberal academic establishment thinks that if they accommodate (pander to) the radicals, then the radical elements will graduate, mature, or quiet down. It didn’t end so well in the French Revolution and here we see evidence that the radicals are destroying even their intellectual allies such as Morton Schapiro.
“In a federal appeals court … the secretary of defense argued that military retirees were subject to freedom of speech restrictions because of their connection to the military, and that if they didn’t like those restrictions, retirees could forfeit their pension and benefits. Let that sink in. The Trump administration expects the people who have put their lives on the line for America to cede one of their basic rights, or forfeit the retirement pay and benefits they have earned over decades of service.”
Typical context-free comment from low-IQ leftist troll.
This is the case of Mark Kelley encouraging members of the military to disobey Trump’s orders because he disagrees with Trump’s policies. Hegseth will probably lose this case but the context does matter, and of course you, our unfriendly non-neighborhood low-IQ pathetic idiotic troll left out all the context.
https://reason.com/2026/05/08/d-c-circuit-seems-disinclined-to-let-pete-hegseth-punish-a-senator-for-his-speech/
You just copy/paste from some pathetic garbage left-wing website. Get a life, moron.
The ad calling for disobeying orders was stupid. However lacking in detail my recollection of it may be, calling for personnel to disobey unlawful orders is, well, lawful. I guess being nearly a free speech absolutist, calling on personnel to disobey any orders because you don’t like the CiC doesn’t seem obviously unlawful for the simple reason that he holds no power to make them do so.
Likewise, without evidence of intent to follow through or a direct connection with another who might do the same, the Comey case looks weak. Stupid political theater on the parts of Comey and the administration.
Bread and circuses without the bread.
That makes ex-mil personnel into second-class citizens. It is difficult to see how, except in the case of classified information, any court would allow that vile policy to stand.
It all boils down to narrative control by the powerful. F ’em
The mob is soon going to be gerrymandered into oblivion.
God willing

“8647”
Clearly Comey was not out of a menu item, and he was not leaving a speakeasy through the 86 Bedford St. entrance.
There are only two ways to “get rid of” a president of the U.S.
Being an off year, Comey was not electioneering, and Comey had no reasonable hope of impeaching President Trump.
The only possible meaning to Comey’s “8647” is to “get rid of” by the only remaining means, that is, assassinate, President Trump.
Guilty of conspiring to incite an assassination!
Case closed.
You mean it’s not, hold the mayo? Darn
If Putin can conduct a pointless and futile war that has produced 300,000 deaths and 1.3 million casualties, President Trump has a very long way to go in Iran.
He can simply muddle through until he has “awakened a great sleeping Persian giant and filled him with a terrible resolve.”
Would you condemn America if say Canada were to allow China, Russia, Tehran and other adversaries stacked under NATO to place bioweapons labs and missile systems on our borders? I think Vladamir is well justified in his “pointless “ war against the con artist Zelensky, today’s warfare is multi faceted and practices subversion to our country on every level.

TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim May 2026 as Jewish American Heritage Month. I call upon Americans to celebrate the heritage and contributions of Jewish Americans and to observe this month with appropriate programs, activities, and ceremonies. I further call on all Americans to celebrate their faith and freedom throughout this year, during this month, and especially on Shabbat to celebrate our 250th year.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this fourth day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-six, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and fiftieth.

Shabbat Shalom
May the Almighty bless and keep President Trump!
Amen, and hope you are having a good Shabbos.
While slightly off topic I have often wondered when reading one of Prof. Turley’s articles in which he mentions the Redbird incident if he has ever invited a NICE official to speak at one of his classes.
Shabbat shalom everyone 🎉🎊🍾🥂🏆🥰🍞🍷
Have a peaceful sabbath.

PT, when laws are written as mazes that lawyers write to be read and understood by lawyers and not the general citizenry there’s a problem. Basic principles should be known and held by all.
Pitiful. Yes, Comey’s message defies the law if not directly then by appearance. It regards the President of United States specifically and suggests assassination. A threat of any kind shall not be tolerated. It’s the law.

Off the bat, I observe that the following statement is untrue: “….a baseless Russian collusion investigation manufactured by the Clinton campaign…..”. A REPUBLICAN -led Senate Committee investigated the connections between Trump’s campaign and Russians and concluded that the January 2017 Intelligence Community assessment alleging Russian interference was “coherent and well-constructed”. The Committee report found that the Russian government had engaged in an “extensive campaign” to sabotage the election in favor of Donald Trump, which included assistance from some of Trump’s own advisers. According to the report, “some evidence suggests” that Konstantin Kilimnik, to whom Manafort provided polling data, was directly connected to the Russian theft of Clinton-campaign emails. In addition, while Trump’s written testimony in the Mueller report stated that he did not recall speaking with Roger Stone about WikiLeaks, the Senate report concludes that “Trump did, in fact, speak with Stone about WikiLeaks and with members of his Campaign about Stone’s access to WikiLeaks on multiple occasions.”
Hillary Clinton was NOT the impetus for investigating ties between Russians and Trump. From “Business”: “Intelligence assessments concluded that Russia interfered in the 2016 US presidential election through cyber operations and coordinated information campaigns. These efforts involved hacking political organisations, stealing internal communications, and releasing them through third-party platforms…. .
Several individuals associated with Trump’s campaign and transition period held interactions with Russian officials or intermediaries.
Michael Flynn, Trump’s first national security adviser, spoke with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak during the transition, including discussions related to sanctions. Flynn later admitted to misleading investigators and resigned early in the administration. His previous appearances on Russia Today and undisclosed foreign payments raised further concerns about judgement and security awareness.
Jeff Sessions, a senator during the campaign and later attorney-general, met with Kislyak in his legislative capacity. Controversy surrounding his testimony during confirmation hearings led to his recusal from oversight of related investigations.
Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, met Kislyak during the transition and later held discussions with Sergey Gorkov, the head of a Russian state-owned development bank under sanctions. Kushner later amended security clearance paperwork after omitting several foreign contacts.
The Trump Tower Meeting
In June 2016, Donald Trump Jr. attended a meeting at Trump Tower after being told Russian-linked individuals possessed damaging information about Hillary Clinton. The meeting produced no meaningful outcome but became one of the most closely examined episodes of the campaign.
Investigators concluded that while the meeting reflected poor judgement, it did not meet the legal threshold for prosecution. Trump Jr. had previously remarked that Russian money formed a significant share of the Trump Organization’s assets, a statement frequently cited in discussions of foreign financial exposure.
Paul Manafort and Pro-Russian Political Work
Paul Manafort joined Trump’s campaign after years of consulting for pro-Russian political figures in Ukraine. He received substantial payments for this work and later faced criminal charges related to tax and bank fraud.
Manafort was convicted on these charges, which were unrelated to election interference. Investigators confirmed he shared internal campaign polling data with a Russian-linked associate, a development that raised serious concerns but did not lead to conspiracy charges.
Other Advisers and Intermediaries
George Papadopoulos, a foreign policy adviser, learned early in the campaign that Russian sources claimed to possess emails harmful to Hillary Clinton. He later pleaded guilty to lying to investigators about his contacts.
Carter Page travelled to Moscow during the campaign and was later subjected to surveillance warrants that were criticised for procedural flaws. Page was never charged.
Roger Stone, a long-time Trump associate, communicated with intermediaries linked to WikiLeaks during the campaign. He was later convicted of lying to Congress and obstruction of justice, though investigators did not establish direct coordination with Russian intelligence.
JD Gordon, a national security adviser to the campaign, met with Ambassador Kislyak at the Republican National Convention and advocated changes to the party platform that softened language on Ukraine. Gordon later stated the changes were approved by Trump.”
It is a MAGA media talking point to claim that Hillary Clinton manufactured a false Russian collusion narrative. The facts prove otherwise. AND, BTW, after Flynn was convicted, appealed his convictions, and lost his appeal, Flynn filed a civil lawsuit alleging some kind of deprivation of his rights. Trump has directed his DOJ to give Flynn $1.25 million of our taxpayer dollars to “settle” the claim, which is as baseless as anything can possibly be. Trump pardoned Roger Stone. Trump paid Carter Page $1.25 million of our taxpayer dollars to “settle” his claim. Manafort not only received a pardon, he was gifted $3.15 million of our taxpayer dollars to “settle” his claim.
And, you MAGAs wonder why people like me take to the streets, carrying signs.

Gigi, your lack of intelligence shows up Bigly here.
Senate Republicans found-and did not deny- evidence of exchanges between Trump campaign and Russian operatives.
WHAT YOU FAIL TO UNDERSTAND was there was NO COOPERATION OR COLLUSION between the two.
It WAS the Clinton campaign that tried to establish a damaging connection. It failed and she now hates Trump for it.

The schadenfreude runneth over in Virginia and filleth our cups.
The Virginia Supreme Court (VASC) ruling on Democrats gerrymander was written by Justice D. Arthur Kelsey, a Republican, who was appointed to the VA Court of Appeals by Democrat Governor Mark Warner in 2002. The VA Assembly elected him to the VASC in 2015 for a 12 year term.

it gets better.
Justice Kelsey quoted US Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan, in the first page of the majority 4-3 opinion:
From Madison’s era (2) to the present, political parties of every stripe have offered if-by-whiskey arguments supporting partisan gerrymandering. Since that time until today, these arguments have been criticized by thoughtful jurists and legal scholars. “[P]artisan gerrymanders,” Justice Kagan has observed, “deprive[] citizens of the most fundamental of their constitutional rights: the rights to participate equally in the political process, to join with others to advance political beliefs, and to choose their political representatives.” Rucho v. Common Cause, 588 U.S. 684, 721-22 (2019) (Kagan, J., joined by Ginsburg, Breyer, and Sotomayor, JJ., dissenting).

schadenfreude on steroids.
Happily it is a beautiful sunny, crisp cool day here in Virginia.
I love the reference to “if by whiskey.” That term originated from Noah Sweat, a member of the Mississippi legislature in 1954. He made his seminal “if by whiskey” speech concerning the prohibition of alcoholic liquor, a law that was still in force in Mississippi at the time. The speech is worth reproducing in full:
My friends, I had not intended to discuss this controversial subject at this particular time. However, I want you to know that I do not shun controversy. On the contrary, I will take a stand on any issue at any time, regardless of how fraught with controversy it might be.
You have asked me how I feel about whiskey. All right, here is how I feel about whiskey: If when you say whiskey you mean the devil’s brew, the poison scourge, the bloody monster, that defiles innocence, dethrones reason, destroys the home, creates misery and poverty, yea, literally takes the bread from the mouths of little children; if you mean the evil drink that topples the Christian man and woman from the pinnacle of righteous, gracious living into the bottomless pit of degradation, and despair, and shame and helplessness, and hopelessness, then certainly I am against it.
But, if when you say whiskey you mean the oil of conversation, the philosophic wine, the ale that is consumed when good fellows get together, that puts a song in their hearts and laughter on their lips, and the warm glow of contentment in their eyes; if you mean Christmas cheer; if you mean the stimulating drink that puts the spring in the old gentleman’s step on a frosty, crispy morning; if you mean the drink which enables a man to magnify his joy, and his happiness, and to forget, if only for a little while, life’s great tragedies, and heartaches, and sorrows; if you mean that drink, the sale of which pours into our treasuries untold millions of dollars, which are used to provide tender care for our little crippled children, our blind, our deaf, our dumb, our pitiful aged and infirm; to build highways and hospitals and schools, then certainly I am for it.
This is my stand. I will not retreat from it. I will not compromise.
Golden takeaway today– if by whiskey.
Unfamiliar with the term “if-by-whiskey”, I clicked the Web Search option. Thanks for helping to expand my repertoire.
OMFK & Creekan,
We are all always learning. I’m 62, just learned a computational statistical software package used in medical sciences called simply R. Perhaps Darren is familiar with it. I took a course this past semester in computational statistics, and it was a humiliating ordeal. I never felt so stupid compared to the kids in the class. I refused to take computer science courses when I was in college (1980s), scoffing at the notion that people would actually spend time on such devices instead of interacting with each other. My prognostication skills have a p value > 5.00.
I come to this forum often as a break from my usual diet of scienc-y jargon. I am cognizant that there are hundreds of lurkers, and I essentially write to them – and give my brain a break from molecular medicine. Glad I could entertain you with my above post.
TL;DR: I try to learn something new everyday.
It’s whiskey time somewhere in the world.
Blessed Sabbath OMFK and to all.
Thank you Estovir, you as well.

Let’s see, now. Trump commands Texas to “find” him 5 more seats, and, without consulting the voters, the Texas legislature does that. Virginia puts the question to the voters, who choose redistricting and pro-Trump judges strike it down. Now, explain to me how, if the voters want redistricting and vote for it, that this IS “gerrymandering”, but when the Texas legislature does it without consulting voters it is NOT “gerrymandering”. AND, why gerrymandering now, right before the midterms.
The inconvenient truth is that Trump is a big, fat, coward–he and MAGA are afraid of the people having a voice in their future and having a voice on how our tax dollars are spent. They are afraid that the money will be cut off for $1 Billion a day war Trump started without consulting Congress, that he lies about being a war, about taking $1 B of our taxpayer dollars to build a ballroom that the overwhelming majority of Americans do NOT want, about gas and grocery prices through the roof because of the stupid war Trump started based on the lie that Iran was poised to nuke us. Trump’s mental illness prevents him from accepting the will of the people, who overwhelmingly oppose him and his agenda. He is the most unpopular POTUS in US history, he has no clue how to end the war he started and even MAGAs are turning against him.
“Trump commands….”
You are so childish. grow up.
Where did the idea come from if not from Trump? Midterm redistricting has not been done anytime recently. Trump has said that Republicans will win all elections for the next 50 years even when they lose the popular vote if red states redistrict away blue districts. Hasn’t MAGA media played the videos of Trump panicking about being impeached? BTW— the vote in the Virginia Supreme Court was 3 to 4, based on some lame argument about the wording of the measure that passed.
Yesterday in Tennessee, Republicans fractured the only black district in the entire state, slicing it up and putting the parts into red districts.
In Alabama, Republicans kept the state house open despite a tornado warning and order to evacuate. The newly redrawn map took away one of two predominantly black districts.
In Louisiana, they are trying to take away all of the black districts. The Governor nullified over 40,000 votes that had already been cast, based on the lie that there is an “emergency”. The “emergency” is that Republicans have a chance to nullify Democrat votes.
Jim Crow isn’t dead anymore. Republicans proudly and boldly are taking away the voices of black voters. We will no longer be a democracy because Republicans will do anything to get and keep power, because it is the only way they can “win”. The will of the American people means nothing. MAGA and Trump have a 34% approval rating. Republicans can’t win on a level playing field, so they have to cheat. The American people aren’t going to stand for it.
Ha! all the MAGA winning getting to you? TDS flare ups have you stewing all night? grit your teeth when you see orange?
The world is bending to Trump’s will to Make America Great Again and you can’t take it.
(This is awesome!)
“. . . pro-Trump judges strike it down.”
Justice Kelsey wrote the majority opinion. He was appointed to the VA Appeals Court by a *democrat* governor (Warner). Then elected to the VA Supreme Court by a *unanimous* vote of the VA legislature.
Care to try again? Maybe this time with an argument, rather then your usual, childish ad hominem attacks.
