A financial journalist once offered simple advice: “Lie to people who want to be lied to, and you’ll get rich…Tell the truth to those who want to be lied to, and you’ll go broke.”
That axiom appears to have been taken to heart by radical Democratic candidates who this week issued transparent denials of past outrageous comments. Their calculus is clearly that the last thing that voters want to hear is the truth about their past views.
Certain cultural touchstones are considered inviolate in some states, such as beef in Texas.
In 2022, Talarico said he was reducing his meat consumption as part of climate-related efforts. Texas Democratic Senatorial candidate James Talarico was roasted after a video surfaced of his calling to reduce meat consumption and “I am proud to say that our campaign has officially become a non-meat campaign. We are only buying vegan products from our local vegan businesses.”
The backlash was so great that Talarico has been eating whole cows to prove that he is not all-hat and no cattle.
Obviously, lying about your positions is hardly a phenomenon confirmed to the far left. Many Republican candidates have also made painfully transparent pivots. However, the spins this week threaten to knock the planet off its axis.
In Wisconsin, Democratic Socialist Francesca Hong seems to be coasting to a primary win despite radical views such as defunding police. In an episode of “Pod Save America,” Hong was asked about her 2020 statements declaring “police exist to uphold white supremacy” and “I support defunding the police as a first step towards abolishing the police.”
Hong responded with a convoluted spin: “My views have only become stronger in that I’m serious about public safety and I will not abolish the police.”
Hong’s views on Thanksgiving took the axiom to a whole new level. Hong previously stated:
“Cancel Thanksgiving. Should have done this in 1621. If it takes a worldwide pandemic for us to realize we should stop celebrating colonialism and the original superspreader event that killed Indigenous folx and women so be it.”
That did not go over well in Wisconsin, only slightly better than coming out against cheese.
Hong did not deny her 2021 statement for weeks, including when confronted on CNN by host Kaitlan Collins. Asked directly if she still hated Thanksgiving, Hong offered her now much-ridiculed “I’m a chef” response, stating that, as a chef, she works to “bring more people to the table.”
Hong seemed to morph into Chauncey Gardner from Being There in offering non-sequiturs of being a “very serious gardener.”
When that interview fell flat, Hong decided to lie and claim that she was just joking in 2021 and “loves” Thanksgiving, her now “favorite holiday.” No one reading her quote or her later interviews would believe that it was a joke. It was not a joke for weeks until her responses became a joke.
Abdul El-Sayed skipped the transitional period and went straight to the lie in his controversy this week when a video surfaced of his saying how he hates the iconic Mackinac Island. Growing up in Chicago, one of my favorite things was to go with my family to the island, which is the quintessential small American town. I actually have never met anyone who hated Mackinac Island…until now. (Some sites are quoting El-Sayed as allegedly saying “I don’t think the most American place in Michigan is a place that…bans cars.”).
In the video, El-Sayed states “I hate Mackinac so much. It’s funny cause, like, if we win, this is gonna be, like, the summer home. Every time I’ve ever come here I’ve hated it.”
El-Sayed was clearly informed that declaring that you despise the most popular tourist location in Michigan is not a vote getter. So, El-Sayed simply told his supporters what they wanted to hear: you cannot believe your lying eyes and ears.
His campaign issued a bizarre statement that sought to convert his controversial comments into his opposition to the elite and privileged class, saying that he was actually referring to the Mackinac Policy Conference which is simply an annual nonpartisan forum for public policy discussions.
El-Sayed claims that he was referring to the conference as being like a summer home for governors. He maintains that he was referring to a conference as the entire island.
El-Sayed knows that it does not matter. He could have claimed that he was referring to hating Mackinac Island Pizza Company. It does not matter. His supporters do not want the baggage and he simply needed to unload it.
With the election in November, the next predictable step will be for Hong to join El-Sayed on Mackinac Island for a public Thanksgiving dinner. Talarico will be on hand to carve the bird with enthusiasm.
The real problem is that these individuals spent years throwing red meat (or, in the case of Talarico, tofu) to the far left. These statements were not considered extreme or controversial until they found themselves speaking to a wider audience. Then they sounded just crazy.
Moreover, some lies are unlikely to register with voters who may prefer to live in delusion. The fact that the Mamdani markets will ultimately sell the most expensive produce in New York is an inconvenient fact that is best ignored.
The model for far-left politicians appears to be Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger who ran as a moderate and then governed from the far left. Spanberger, for example, pledged not to gerrymander districts to eliminate all Republican districts and then immediately moved to do so. Many voters likely did not believe her on gerrymandering, taxes, or other broken pledges before the election. They just needed her to say it. So, you might have to visit Mackinac or feign enjoyment at Thanksgiving or barbeques for a few weeks. Then you can do a Spanberger.
Abraham Lincoln may have said “You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time.” However, the fact is that you do not have to fool all of the people all of the time, just enough to win over the course of a few weeks.

Yes, the products in NYCs government stores-that you need id to shop in-will be much more expensive than those in for profit stores. BUT, a big chunk of those costs will be hidden in the increased taxes necessary to keep the stores running. Wonder how many folks will make the connection? I’m not betting on a majority.
I think the play here is to create another form of government entitlement. If the people ‘shopping’ there get stuff for less than in other markets, they’ll be happy. Most of them probably don’t pay income taxes anyway. But they’ll only be happy until the shelves go bare, then they’ll be cynical and/or angry. When he says he needs to raise taxes on Billionaires to re-stock the store, they’ll be all in. The only question will be if he’ll be successful in redirecting all the anger at the ‘wealthy’/capitalists, or if he’ll catch some of the blame from the shoppers for providing ‘cheap’ stuff and then taking it away.
The other thing that will be interesting to see is how shoplifting will be handled at these places.

I was very pleased to hear a podcaster repeat something I frequently comment – virtually everything the left says is a lie or misleading. I don’t need the public credit as no one knows me. But I do want every commenter to realize this is the case. That’s all they do is lie and mislead. Of course they go back on their word and will lie and mislead again. It’s not outrageous or shocking as so many say. It’s their policy.
Seems to me that defunding the police is the first and last step to abolishing the police.
One thing I’ve noticed about Professor Turley’s blog is that nobody has to answer on the spot. We all have time. We can read the article, read the comments, look something up if we want, think it through, and then decide whether to hit “Comment.”
That’s what makes some of the comments so revealing.
When someone still chooses to ignore the facts, dismiss evidence, or simply repeat a political narrative, it tells me we’re looking at more than a disagreement. It says something about how that person processes information.
To me, one of the most important questions isn’t, “What do you believe?” It’s, “How did you get there?” Did you test your own assumptions? Did you look for evidence that challenged your position? Or did you simply accept the version that made you feel the most comfortable?
Nobody gets everything right. I know I don’t. But intellectual honesty starts with the humility to admit that your side can be wrong, too. If we lose that, we stop searching for the truth and start defending a tribe.
But, but, but I like MY tribe! It is sooo much better than your tribe and that should be obvious to even you benighted ones. My tribe is so soothing. I love the cocoon it provides.

The worst poll in my opinion began in 1958, asking about trust in the federal government. The founding generation would have used it to see how citizens have drifted away from the capacity for self-government. The lower the number the better. Today, people think it should be as high as possible. That’s a tragic drift.

Freedom of the press was meant to be the citizen’s antidote to lying pols (among other things.) Journalism is the only industry that enjoys broad Constitutional protections as part of the original text. When the press effectively represents a political party or an administration, they are being disloyal to the Constitution. Journalists should hold pol accountable for their statements, past and present.
Unfortunately, we no longer have a journalism industry. We have a confirmation bias industry. On all sidss.

I think that’s likely the case. Those of us in the middle seem to simply be outcasts at this point.
It’s quite simple, really. It boils down to the tiny percentage of citizens who actually vote in primaries – roughly 20%. In other words, depending on the race and the number of candidates, this allows no more than 10.1% of a given electorate to select the candidate – and if there are more than two candidates for a given slot, it can be well under 10%. Those who vote in primaries tend to be the most motivated towards a particular cause or individual – and often the most extreme. This happens in both major parties.

It is one thing to lie—a behavior that is both common and ubiquitous. However, a new level has emerged: lying about the lie. This often involves politicians who lie to fit a specific narrative and then, when that narrative begins to fail, lie about the initial falsehood.
Yet, lying about a lie does not function as a logical double negative; rather, it creates sheer confusion. For instance, James Talarico likely misrepresented his stance on veganism to gain favor for his candidacy, and now he is lying about having told that original lie.
Yet, our innovative American politicians go even further still: they lie about the lie they told about the original falsehood. At that point, the deception defies all logic.
Everyone’s arguing about which side lies worse. Wrong question. The moment a politician opens their mouth, assume deception is baked in. Doesn’t matter the party, doesn’t matter the cause. That’s not cynicism, that’s just paying attention.
The real failure isn’t theirs. It’s ours.
Figuring out the truth was never supposed to be optional homework we skip because the guy on our team said it. “I know you are but what am I” isn’t an argument, it’s a surrender. The second you’re defending a lie because your side told it, you’ve stopped being a citizen and started being a fan.

When the productive, wealth-generating part of a society refuses to be coopted by the communist based ideology, the remaining population of those unable to provide this wealth always end up in poverty after they have exhausted what remains when those in opposition are either eliminated, jailed or exiled. There’s nothing unusual about politicians lying when running for office. This is particulary easy to do if you’ve never held office before. But if and when you win, if you actually try to implement these deeply unpopular ideas, it won’t go over well with the voting public. I think the Democrats are digging themselves a deep hole.

In 2020 the nation went insane because the Dems needed to get Trump out of the WH and so they went well overboard in the lockdowns which allowed the insane mail-in ballot situation and Biden “getting” 81 million votes. It allowed our cities to be destroyed by lockdowns AND riots even though we couldn’t visit sick parents in the hospital. We had nurses and doctors begging us to stay home and then cheering on 1000s marching mouth to mouth for leftist causes. We had every single Dem candidate raise there hand for health care, free health care, for illegals and for an open border and we had the Dems not stopping Biden from opening said border. Oh, and the Trans thing took off too.
Well a funny thing happened in 2024…all of these insane positions were no longer perceived as being right or even sane and with X, the internet and even good old Professor Turley’s columns we all got to see over and over again Harris and others spouting their insane points of view.
Now we will have all of the DSA goons on video saying they support NO Borders, NO Prisons, NO Police, boys in girls sports and of course death to Israel. We will see how it plays out, but my guess is it won’t be good in TX, MI and WI as it is in NYC and Denver.
We couldn’t even visit healthy parents in assisted living. We couldn’t even take a walk in a park.

I would classify PT as a liberal in classical definition. The Democrat party is no longer moderate in any sense having purged moderates from its ranks. There’s not much difference between the DNC and DSA when both support packing SCOTUS rendering the Bill of Rights and the Constitution dead letters. Many prominent Dems, public and private have expressed their support for totalitarian socialist and communist regimes going back decades. I was surprised that Bill Cassidy cast the deciding vote for Blanche. Cassidy was one of the few Rs that supported the impeachment of DJT. He lost his seat in the primary this year, a remarkable outcome for an incumbent, to the Trump backed candidate. Despite the snub by DJT, his entire campaign was about his support for Trump. Like Mary Landrieu before him, he found that LA voters have long memories for senators who betray them. I’m not sure why he became emotional about it other than it was one of the last consequential votes he cast and it was in support of DJT.
He probably got emotional knowing he had to go home and explain to his daughter why he totally ignored Blanche’s role in the Epstein Files cover-up.
