The EPA has spent roughly $15 million to measure the pollution caused largely by cow farts and burps. I truly want to meet the researchers who got this assignment. Nevertheless, it turns out that California and Wisconsin are massive contributors to cow-based emissions. While Ronald Reagan may have identified trees as a major source of pollution, the report below reveals the dark untold story of those cute dairy cows that you see on the cartons of Ben and Jerry Ice Cream.
Cows produce large amounts of ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) particulates, nitrous oxide and methane. They produce so much that they surpass: Coal Mining Manure Management; Waste Water Treatment; Mobile Combustion and Iron & Steel Production.
For those of us who watch the Simpsons, this is no surprise. That leading attorney, Troy McClure, (who you may remember from such educational films as “Lead Paint: Delicious But Deadly,” and “Here Comes the Metric System!”) warned: “Don’t kid yourself, Jimmy. So, if I read this correctly, the FCC could use this EPA report to pull Rush Limbaugh off the air?
This debacle is compounded by the Dairy Association that has overwhelmed us with more dairy than is possibly healthy, even in the most scant diet and the Beef Industry that produces more beef than is healthy for us to consume.
Yet - we consume and consume and consume - plus we import more beef from Argentina and Brazil. Much of it frozen, much of it in cans, and if it’s at your butcher counter - no one has to tell you anything except that it is USDA Inspected and the Grade. How’s that for lobbying power.
Our congress has caused this debacle - deregulation being a battle cry attributed to the worshipers of Reagan, which effectively left Americans unprotected. Just as an aside - if Ronald Reagan had indeed had his way for more deregulation - then the Air Traffic Controllers would have told him to take a hike because they worked for a private agency as it almost is now - and he wouldn’t have had all those manly-man sound bites.
We’ve now got what he and his felonious heirs wished upon us. The oligarchs have got direct deposit, Congress is like so many doormen with their hands out to get us cabs, and the US Gov’t is counting farts. Perfect.
