Anti-Witch and Pro-Palin: Kenyan Minister at Heart of Latest Controversy Over Faith-Based Politics

In the video below, Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin credits and praises a Kenyan Minister named Thomas Muthee with helping her to achieve the Alaskan governorship through prayer. It turns out the Muthee also hunts down witches and makes Rev. John Hagee look positively normal.

At a speech at the Wasilla Assembly of God on June 8 this year, Mrs Palin described how Muthee had laid his hands on her:

“As I was mayor and Pastor Muthee was here and he was praying over me, and you know how he speaks and he’s so bold. And he was praying “Lord make a way, Lord make a way. And I’m thinking, this guy’s really bold, he doesn’t even know what I’m going to do, he doesn’t know what my plans are. And he’s praying not “oh Lord if it be your will may she become governor,” no, he just prayed for it. He said “Lord make a way and let her do this next step. And that’s exactly what happened.”

For an update and video of the blessing (including to be protected from witchcraft), click here.

She might also have enlisted him in some good old witch hunting. After founding the Prayer Cave in 1989 in Kiambu, Kenya, Muthee reportedly says that he spoke with God and was called to the United States where he would be embraced by Palin and her church. While in Kenya, he says that he discovered that the community was inundated by witchcraft: “We prayed, we fasted, the Lord showed us a spirit of witchcraft resting over the place.”

He even identified one witch known as Mama Jane, who ran a competing “divination” center called the Emmanuel Clinic. He declared that she was responsible for a rash of car accidents and led a crusade against her — a movement that would trigger calls for her to be stoned to death. She was eventually arrested and then fled the area.

It is certainly an example of “small town values” but perhaps not the quite type that the campaign is looking for.

I was on the Fundamentalist angle of attack, but a 500 point drop in the stock market makes that seem less troublesome, seriously check out my Palin posts?

First of all we don’t need a “prayer cave” around here as we already have “The Beer Cave” where people go when they want to commune with spirits.

This story is remarkable for how unremarkable it all is. Belief in demons and witchcraft is widely held in fundamentalist churches. There’s a reason that about half of the US population thinks evolution is a lie. This is a profoundly irrational culture. It is scary and it is everywhere.

    Jill:

You are assuming that Mama Jane was not in fact a witch. I think that we need to hear the full story from Sarah Palin before we jump to any such conclusions. Don’t forget the traffic accidents. What about the traffic accidents?

  4. 4 Cro Magnum Man 1, September 17, 2008 at 5:03 pm

We should be clear here that Palin herself is under the influence of a religious cult that believes its members speak in Tongues.

If you’ve ever had the displeasure of attending a Pentacostal service and seen someone speak in Tongues, its quite deranged.

They babble incoherent gibberish and gobbledygook, uttering sounds, grunts, etc, that an interpreter declares the meaning of.

It is primitive, delusional and the notion that such a person under the influence of such a cult could possibly be considered for Vice President is insanity.

  5. 5 mespo727272 1, September 17, 2008 at 5:17 pm

I think witches are a protected class and immune from these scurrilous allegations and they should be Vice-Presidents too. Bring on the tanning bed, cousin Sarah’s moving on up to the big house with the “cement pond,” all with the aid of a few potions and spells. Yee-Haw!

  6. 6 Jill 1, September 17, 2008 at 5:38 pm

There is a test for witches–you can’t put lipstick on a broomstick. The thing just wacks you on the head when you try, forcing you to walk into traffic and perform the miracle of traffic jams. This is how Mama Jane did her work. I know all of this because I use a scrying mirror. This mirror is so powerful it decodes tongue speech.

I was dragged (willingly I admit) to a Pentecostal Assembly of God Church on several occasions. They waved their hands a lot, but quite a few denominations are like that. My biggest complaint is the attempt to use rock bands and the fact that their ministers always remind me of Terry McCauliffe on steroids and crank (greasy car salesman slicks)? But then that’s what John Edwards looks like and I liked him? I’d really rather nod off to pipe organ music even though I’m a Metalhead!! Christian modern (regardless of denomination) music stinks, it don’t have too it just doesn’t get the best and brightest for some reason though I hear Kansas is doing it now?I Close My Eyes, only for a moment…..

I find it scary how alot of these comments are left by one-minded Christians, Atheists or Agnostics saying how they cannot believe that ‘a rational decent christian’ can believe in such a thing as withcraft.

For one their are many serious pagan religions based around ‘witchcraft’ one of them being Wicca which originated from my home country of England. (Read my blog to find out a little more)

I do not believe that anyone of another faith such as Chrisianity should go anywhere near another religion with any intentions other than for interest and understanding and I find it quite sad that they felt they had to pray for the witch’s ‘salvation’? I do not wish to offend any Chrisitians but sometimes it seems like the only religion that cannot accept that other people have other beliefs and that is there path without believing they are indefinately wrong. One of my own personal beliefs is that it is impossible to walk the path of righteousness without an open mind

It’s scary that Palin quoted Westbrook Pegler in her acceptance speech.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/robert-f-kennedy-jr/governor-palins-reading-l_b_126478.html

RFK, Jr. writes, “Fascist writer Westbrook Pegler, an avowed racist who Sarah Palin approvingly quoted in her acceptance speech for the moral superiority of small town values, expressed his fervent hope about my father, Robert F. Kennedy, as he contemplated his own run for the presidency in 1965, that “some white patriot of the Southern tier will spatter his spoonful of brains in public premises before the snow flies.”

  15. 15 dummidumbwit 1, September 17, 2008 at 9:16 pm

True witches would be hard to find, most of what is defined as Wicca seems pre christian Goddess worship, not devil worship, you would have to be near one to know, but it is more Earth/Nature a feminine deity that existed prior to Christian conversion in much of Europe and elsewhere. So if you are a fundementalist Christian they are witches and devil worshipers, a non fundamentalist would refer to most Wicca as nature worshipers, same people different definitions? But calling a nature worshiper a Devil or a whatever based on religious beliefs violates the United States Constitution and the British one as well (likely as not).

I heard a guy use an expression that perhaps can be used by Sen. Obama to describe McSame’s economic policies without upsetting the Palin image police. Barack Obama could say:

You can put feathers on a dog, but that don’t make him a chicken.

Much the same could be said about Gov. Palin’s preparedness for her current role.

  17. 17 rafflaw 1, September 17, 2008 at 9:49 pm

The reason McCain picked Sarah “I can see Russia from my house” Palin is because her appointment was a quid pro quo to the religous right for their support of McCain. How else do you explain Dobson’s switch to support McCain right after she was named? I wish I could explain the car crashes!

  18. 18 Jill 1, September 17, 2008 at 9:55 pm

“And I’m thinking, this guy’s really bold, he doesn’t even know what I’m going to do, he doesn’t know what my plans are. And he’s praying not “oh Lord if it be your will may she become governor,” no, he just prayed for it.”

Two things come to mind here: 1. god isn’t dead, he’s really stupid and 2. I call these types of christians, “christian triumphalists”. It is clear they are not even bothering with the cover that it’s god’s will to be done. They are on a mission from hell to gain power at all cost and use it to impose their own will. Sarah Palin’s record is exactly that–gain power and impose her will on others. The new lord’s prayer suitable for Alabama courts: “Sarah’s will be done, on earth as it was in Alaska.”

Audio of two sermons given by Bishop Muthee are available at the KingsGate Church website…

    http://www.kingsgateuk.com/Articles/3516/Kingsgate_Community_Church/Resources/Teaching/Download_Sunday_Messages.aspx

At about 16:30 of the first sermon, Mr. Muthee recounts meeting a woman who told him that her prayers resurrected a dead child brought to some sort of prayer meeting in Bolivia. Muthee declares that he longs for such meetings.

At about 23:45 of the second sermon, Mr. Muthee declares that the more violent and committed believers become the quicker they will see things happen in their communities.

I’m at the point where I’d like to know the extent of Governor Palin’s relationship with the strange Mr. Muthee.

    Mama Jane a witch?!! Please!!!!
If you lived in Kenya, you would understand that traffic accidents are not caused by supernatural forces but rather through pure human error and stupidity. Name any major highway in Kenya and my guess is you will find a record of hundreds, if not thousands of accidents that have happened on it. This is due to the EXTREMELY poor state and maintenance of practically all roads in the country. Secondly, try and find a Kenyan who has never or who doesnt know anyone that has driven while drunk! We are talking here of a country where thousands of motorists drive drunk EVERY SINGLE DAY. The popular saying is that the `car will find its way home’ if its owner is too drunk to do it himself.
So, the theory of traffic accidents on Kiambu road can be easily discounted just by those two examples, not to mention overspeeding by both motorists and public transport vehicles (Matatus).

And as for charlatans such as Pastor Muthee, well, he is not the first one (nor will he be the last one apparently) to claim some God-given gift for sniffing out witches. Thousands of churches such as his have mushroomed all over the country, preying on a superstitious citizenry that will believe anything that promises to alleviate their fears and sufferings. And yes, someone DOES go laughing all the way to the bank after the dust settles, and that someone is Pastor Muthee and his fellow witchunters. Religion is BIG business in Kenya, believe me.

John McCain didn’t realize he needed the guy who promised to get Auto Jobs back in Michigan and managed to get elected Governor of Massachusetts as a Republican, but that’s hindsight, Obama and the Axelrod Machine are too smooth and Bubba’s down in Florida acting right like he always ends up doing? Obama is more centrist than you think just ask Limbaugh and Buchanan when they aren’t spouting red meat. And Michelle will keep him out of trouble for 8 years, they are more balanced and regular people.

McCain, having been the 2000 Maverick, who was having a crossover appeal to conservative Democrats is still thinking (correctly probably) that it is his job to appeal to the middle. Palin is doing the base and is effective because the base wants to hear “white Flag of Surrender, Shining City on the Hill and Get the Government out of out way” It’s our job to paint the picture of Reagan clones being in the way of everyone else in the country? Bush copied Reagan to the letter deficit funded military expenditures, deregulate everything and gimmicky tax give backs of real unimportance to the middle and much importance to the top end? So instead of being a Religious Zealot and an embarrassment, Palin is doing the base work for John McCain, the issues are returning to the top where they belong and Sarah does provide interest and color as well as a rallying point for our base to examine the real issues, Reagan vs FDR?

  49. 52 Dan Scott 1, April 16, 2010 at 11:45 pm

Does Palin Support McCain’s bill—Indefinite Detention of U.S. Citizens On Mere Suspicion?

On March 4, 2010, Sen. John McCain introduced S.3081, The “Enemy Belligerent Interrogation, Detention, and Prosecution Act of 2010.”

Sen. McCain’s S.3081 would eliminate several Constitutional protections allowing Government to arbitrarily pick up Americans on mere suspicion—with no probable cause. Your political opinions and statements made against U.S. Government could be used by Authorities to deem you a “hostile” “Enemy Belligerent” to cause your arrest and indefinite detention. S.3081 is so broadly written innocent anti-war protesters and Tea Party Groups might be arrested and detained just for attending demonstrations; Government can charge that attending demonstrations “materially supported hostilities.”

Considering how often Sarah Palin defends Free Speech, one can’t help wonder why Palin is helping McCain’s reelection to the U.S. Senate after he introduced possibly the most anti-Free Speech Bill in Modern U.S. History. Perhaps Palin or her Tea Party supporters haven’t considered McCain’s legislation might be used by a corrupt government administration to crush them. Tea Parties might question Palin whether she supports Sen. McCain’s bill the “Enemy Belligerent Interrogation, Detention, and Prosecution Act of 2010.” (S.3081)

Under S.3081, an “individual” need only be Suspected by Government of “suspicious activity” or “supporting hostilities” to be dragged off and held indefinitely in Military Custody. Government will have the power to detain and interrogate any individual without probable cause. Government need only allege an individual kept in detention, is an Unprivileged Enemy Belligerent suspected of; having engaged in hostilities against the United States or its coalition partners; or has purposefully and materially supported hostilities against the United States or its coalition partners. How could one prove to Government they did not purposely do something? “Materially Supporting Hostilities” against the United States could include any person or group that spoke out or demonstrated disapproval against an agency of U.S. Government. It is foreseeable many Americans might go underground to Resist Government Tyranny. Definition for Unprivileged Enemy Belligerent: (Anyone Subject to a Military Commission)

At least under the Patriot Act, law enforcement generally needed probable cause to detain a person indefinitely. Passage of S.3081 will permit government to use “mere suspicion” to curtail an individual’s Constitutional Protections against unlawful arrest, detention and interrogation without benefit of legal counsel and trial. According to S.3081 Government is not required to provide detained individuals U.S. Miranda Warnings or even an attorney.

S.3081 if passed will frighten Americans from speaking out. S.3081 is so broadly written, it appears any “individual” who writes on the Internet or verbally express an opinion against or an entity of U.S. Government or its coalition partners might be detained on the basis he or she is an “unprivileged enemy belligerent”, “supporting hostilities against U.S. Government.”

How might Americans respond should Government use this bill to take away their loved ones, family members and friends on mere suspicion? It is foreseeable McCain’s bill will drive lawful political activists underground, perhaps creating the domestic terrorists McCain said we needed to be protected from.

McCain’s bill mentions “non-violent acts” supporting terrorism in the U.S. and or emanating from America against a Coalition Partner. Non-violent terrorist acts” are covered in the Patriot Act to prosecute Persons that support “coercion to influence a government or intimidation to affect a civilian population.” However, U.S. activists and individuals under S.3081 would be much more vulnerable to prosecution, if (charged with suspicion) of “intentionally providing support to an Act of Terrorism”, for example American activists can’t control what other activists might do illegally—they network with domestically and overseas. Under the Patriot Act, law enforcement generally needs probable cause to detain or prosecute someone. But under S.3081, law enforcement and the military can too easily use (hearsay or informants) to allege “suspicious activity” to detain an individual. It is problematic under S.3081 that detained individuals in the U.S. not involved in terrorism or hostile activities, not given Miranda Warnings or allowed legal counsel will be prosecuted for ordinary crimes because of their alleged admissions while in military custody.

Notably, McCain’s S.3081 mandates (merging) Federal, State and Local Police and subsequently the U.S. Military to detain and hold Individuals in the U.S., even without probable cause. Interestingly a Rand Report prepared for the Army, recently made public, appears to suggest that U.S. Government develop a Local, State and Federal U.S. “National Police Stabilization Force merging State law enforcement with the Feds. What could happen to State Rights and what Laws and Jurisdiction would be used to prosecute state Citizens arrested by a National Police Stabilization Force? A National Police Force could potentially be sent by the President into any State with the approval of its governor, against the wishes of its Citizens? To clarify the Rand Corporation report visit:

    http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=122533

Historically it is foreseeable under S.3081 that “erroneous informant information” could be used to detain innocent Individuals. Other countries have used lying informants to imprison; even execute political opposition.

Under S.3081 government may use an individual’s phone call and email information to allege without probable cause “suspicious or hostile activity against a U.S. civilian population or the United States to detain Americans.”

(Make Your Own Determination If The Analysis Herein Is Correct) See McCain’s 12-page Senate bill S.3081 at:
    assets.theatlantic.com/static/mt/assets/politics/ARM10090.pdf

FYI: below is enclosed a copy of “Hitler’s Discriminatory Decrees signed February 28, 1933.” Although the Nazi Decrees are written differently than S.3081, the McCain bill could bring America to the same place crushing free speech and personal liberty. Note how the Nazi Government in Section (1) and (4), similar to U.S. S.3081, suspend personal liberty— shutdown Free Speech to intimidate Citizens speaking out against Government:

    See Section 1
“Sections 114, 115, 117, 118, 123, 124, and 153 of the Constitution of the German Reich are suspended until further notice. Thus, restrictions on personal liberty, on the right of free expression of opinion, including freedom of the press, on the right of assembly and the right of association, and violations of the privacy of postal, telegraphic, and telephonic communications, and warrants for house-searches, orders for confiscations as well as restrictions on property, are also permissible beyond the legal limits otherwise prescribed.”

Similar to McCain’s S. 3081, but using different wording the Nazi Government in Section (4) see below, suspended Constitutional rights, ordered the arrest of Citizens for any ACT that might incite or provoke disobedience against state authorities. McCain’s S.3081 instead mentions detaining and prosecuting Individuals for “supporting hostilities” against U.S. Government. S.3081 is so broadly written any person or group attending a protest could be arrested without provable cause and detained if government charged a protest-supported hostilities.

    See Section 4

Are You Scheduled For Government Interrogation If Senate bill 3081 Is Passed?

Government need only allege an individual kept in detention, is an Unprivileged Enemy Belligerent suspected of; having engaged in hostilities against the United States or its coalition partners; or has purposefully and materially supported hostilities against the United States; its coalition partners; or U.S. civilians.

Government.” The “supporting hostilities” provisions in S.3081 are so broad Government could use “suspicion” to detain U.S. corporate executives on the premise their corporations “supported hostilities” by providing goods or services to a nation engaged in hostilities against the United States.

Whoever provokes, or appeals for or incites to the disobedience of the orders given out by the supreme state authorities or the authorities subject to then for the execution of this decree, or the orders given by the Reich Government according to Section 2, is punishable—insofar as the deed, is not covered by the decree with more severe punishment and with imprisonment of not less that one month, or with a fine from 150 up to 15,000 Reichsmarks.
