In a story that can only make Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad feel more comfortable visiting the United States, a community college professor says that he was fired after stating in his Western Civilization class that the story of Adam and Eve should not be read literally. A community college instructor in Red Oak claims he was fired after he told his students that the biblical story of Adam and Eve should not be literally interpreted.
Steve Bitterman calims that officials at Southwestern Community College fired him after a handful of students threatened legal action.

I must agree with your view on the harsh treatment of atheists. What is particularly worrisome in this account is how it may have invaded the protected realm of the classroom. If we cannot exchange such views openly and freely, educational institutions become mere reflections of majoritarian or accepted logic and dogma.
I cannot say I am surprised that a professor was fired for saying adam and eve are a myth. This country is becoming more and more dictatorial and limiting of our free speech.
However, this country has always in my lifetime been hostile to those who don’t believe in religion. I have been an atheist all my life, I never was religious. At the age of seven I was punished by my teacher when she ordered all of us to declare our religion. As I had none I said I was atheist. I was banned from many class activities and told I could not speak to the teacher’s daughter.
When my own daughter was taught in her class that the story of Jesus was literally true, I spoke to the teacher. When I stated that she should not teach religion in a history class the teacher became very hostile to myself and my daughter.
As you may be aware there are about 9 states which deny atheists the right to public office by requiring any office holder to declare a belief in God.
As the country becomes more authoritarian and less democratic more such incidents will occur.
