Shockers: Child Advocate Arrested for Child Abuse; Motivational Speaker Arrested for Attempted Murder

Two bizarre stories are emerging out of Texas and Minnesota. In Austin, Billy Dan Carroll, 53, has been arrested of sexually assaulting an eight-year-old girl — despite his work as a child advocate against abuse. In Minneapolis, Russell Simon Jr, 45, is being held on attempted murder (using a statue of John Wayne) –despite his work as a popular motivational speaker on such things as anger management.

In Carroll’s case, he was a volunteer for the Court Appointed Special Advocacy group and is now suspected for being a serial rapist. Police say they found a video tape in Carroll’s bedroom showing him sexually assaulting six other children and two adults. Carroll (shown above) is being held on high bond.

Simon’s case is equally bizarre. He is charged with first-degree premeditated attempted murder, second-degree attempted murder, first-degree criminal sexual conduct, assault with a dangerous weapon, and violating the terms of his earlier prison release by using a firearm. He could be facing 30 years in prison. Simon, an ex-con, has spoken to over 250,000 kids in his signature “10 Seconds Can Change Your Life Forever.” For his website, click here.

The ten seconds that got Simon in trouble this time involved drinking with an old prison buddy, taking meth, stripping off his clothes, and then fighting with the buddy. At one point, he allegedly hit his pal in the face with a statue of John Wayne. It is not clear whether the statue depicts a scene from “The Quiet Man” (a misdemeanor) for “The Green Berets” (a felony).

Notably, he is not the only motivational speaker speaker arrested recently, click here.
Bijan Anjomi, 64, motivates people on “effortless prosperity until of course his arrest on three counts of sexual assault.

  1. Hello Mr. Turley:

    RE:Mr. Bijon Anjomi

I have written to you informing you of the dismissal of the charges against Mr. Anjomi yet your index and archive in your website still have him listed.

Please advise why you have not removed his name from your website’s index and archives, as it erroneously labels him.

    Yours sincerely,

  3. There is an old joke about defining the Yiddish expression “chutzpah”:
Murdering your parents and then asking mercy from the court as an orphan. It seems that so many people like Ted Haggard, Larry Craig, David Vitter and these two fools, present themselves publicly as crusaders against their private weaknesses. Sadly, many of us project a public persona that hides some of our true selves, even if our private “failings” are far below the level of these hypocrisies. Most of this can be ascribed to what is known as mild neurotic behavior. The instances illustrated by this story and in the examples I cite, achieve a level of full blown pathological behavior. I believe that our President and some members of his cohort have sociopathic pathologies, which they defend as “doing their duty.” In this administration though, others like the VP behave pathologically merely because they’re greedy and egocentric.

  4. Not really so shocking for the child abuser. We have known for years that child predators tend to gravitate towards jobs where they can work with their prey. Boy Scout leaders, day care workers, and similar vocations or avocations have seen a rise in complaints for this type of abuse. We had a multi-million dollar settlement here in Virginia involving a daycare worker at a church-run daycare in Williamsburg involving several victims. That a child advocate dons the wolf’s clothing seems in line with this but more invidious. The anger management guy is just crazy.
