Chicago to Create “Gay High School”

Chicago school officials are recommending the creation of a “gay-friendly” high school to accommodate rising numbers of gay and lesbian students and reduce harassment in the school system. I have long been opposed to the increasing specialization and balkanization of the public school system. While I support this worthy purpose, I believe that it has a negative impact on the goals of a public system as a whole. It is hard to oppose such schools like School for Social Justice Pride Campus, but I believe that the solution is to expel abusive and homophobic students — not remove the victims.

While I have been long supporter of gay rights, I opposed the creation of the Harvey Milk High school in New York, click here and here.

The School for Social Justice Pride Campus, will not be exclusive to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students, but it aimed at that target population. For the full story, click here.

  1. “There is a reason it takes a man and a woman to create a child.”

Yep, like you only plan to have sex solely for procreation.

Hmmm, maybe your God made homosexuals to prevent overpopulation?

You should practice what you ‘preach’.

    Conservatives …

  3. I do think on my own, thanks Mespo. There’s nothing wrong with listening to or reading things someone says or writes. It’s the same way you develope your thoughts as well. YOu don’t lock you’re self up in a little room and block out all media types and make these decisions.

I don’t agree with everything they say. I never said that.

But you seem to have to idea that people have to accept everything and everyone. And I don’t think I do.

I have my own beliefs on what I think is right and you have your own.

Once you realize that, maybe you’ll grow up and quit whining so much

  4. My name is Frelima “Free” Sample, owner/CEO of Rainbow muzik, which is an internet-based record label that primarily targets the LGBT (lesbian, gay, transgender, and bisexual) community and provides a lot of educational information on our website regarding current events. I read the article on Chicago’s plan to open a gay-friendly high school and I have mixed feelings. I feel that yes, it is a form of segregation and I completely disagree with the segregation, however I do feel that we must, MUST implement a support system for these kids. I cannot stress how important it is that these lgbt kids have some form of support system put in place to address their specific needs. These kids need support more than any other minority group mainly because, unlike any other minority, many of them are not accepted and face ostracism in their own homes from their parents. it’s bad enough these kids have to face oppression from society, but to have to deal with it at home when they are not even old enough to provide for themselves and move out on their own, demands some major attention from the public. The suicide and homeless rates amongst this demographic of children is excessively high, and the problem is the children do not have enough resources to address their needs to seek help. The only advantage that I see these type of schools having is that there will be resources available to these kids that address their specific needs. So long as the schools offer teaching opportunities to LGBT teachers and provide counseling, and community outreach resources, I don’t know, maybe, and I stress maybe the schools of this type may not be such a bad idea. We HAVE to remember that the LGBT students that opt to attend such schools have enough pride about who they are as individuals, that despite what discrimination they may face from their peers, society and their families, they still have the courage to proclaim their sexuality and not hide it. I have to commend these children for having the strength to be so courageous at such an early age. These children are not on the “Down Low (DL)”, hiding their sexuality and possibly exposing members of the opposite sex to disease and H.I.V. should they engage in unprotected sex without their partner knowing their risk level. No the deception is not there, but the possibility they won’t get hired at a job, admitted to a college, allowed in the military, sneers and whispers, uncouth jokes, and so much more, are realities they face everyday. All realities that a “closeted gay”, if you will, shies away from, because unlike the color of your skin, your sexuality you can hide. Society still has not matured to a level where we can accept people for who the are and their individuality yet, and until it does, the need to protect the children who are simply non-traditional is imperative. I would prefer that the money spent to create the segregated schools be spent on counselors, resources, and the increased hiring of LGBT teachers, but if the school boards refuse to do their part and the new schools are the only option offered, then I have to say, it is a start. Before we can criticize or put forth our opinion we have to take a stand and do our part. You may not like the “Gay Highs”, but unless you are in some way providing resources to these kids with an incredible need for help, you are a part of the problem and adding to it, not part of the solution.

    That is just so lesbian!

    But, can three or more?

“I’m not going to lie, I listen to Glenn Beck and Rush. I love those guys.”

Don’t worry you’ll grow out of that too! As for my news, I don’t “get it” from anyone. I prefer to read it myself from many sources and make up my own mind. TV is for the lazy and those in need of being told what to think. You don’t have time to consider what you’ve been exposed to like reading a newspaper article. I don’t like being led. Obsequiousness is really not a very attractive quality–nor particularly healthy for a democracy. Here’s a lttle test for you! Who said this:

“If a nation expects to be ignorant and free in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be.”

The “regulars” on this blog know it as one of my favorite quotations from one of my favorite persons. By the way, it is the antithesis of Rush and Beck!

  7. Jessica, for your personal edification
    – this is considered ‘comedy’ in the real world.

Kathy Griffin on ‘Senator Larry Craig’:

  8. Whatever Mespo…

There is a reason that two penis’s cannot create a child. And I’m talking about two people actually having sex, not two morons in a lab putting semen with an egg.

I’m not going to lie, I listen to Glenn Beck and Rush. I love those guys. So I think you know where I stand on a number of things.

You can go ahead and get your news from the “highly” educated Katie Couric and Campbell Brown. Oh and Charles Gibson in his “smart-looking” glasses”. It’s pretty clear to me which side of the fence you are sitting on.

  9. “Like I said, this site is just chock full of Liberals, who want rights for everyone but Christians.”

    Jessica,
No one on this site is against Christians having their rights and freedoms. Your problem is that you identify Christian Rights with the ability of Christians to impose their beliefs on everyone else. The irony of this is that in this respect you and your ilk seem to share similar beliefs with those in Islam who think Sharia Law should prevail.

As far as Christian rights are concerned I must tell you that as a Jew growing up in the 50’s, I resented my public school assemblies being opened up with Christian Prayers. This was a violation of my rights. Especially so because 50% of the kids in my school were Jewish.

  10. Jessica,
I didn’t really throw any studies at you, but mainly emphasized that The Golden Rule is the basic tenet of Christianity. Do you disagree? If you do agree, than how do you reconcile The Golden Rule with Conservative Philosophy? If you don’t agree than do you feel that the proscription of sexuality is more important to God than the following of the golden Rule?

  11. Mespo,

At the moment, I can’t think of any argument for defending a neo-con against a finding of treachery and treason to benefactor; not even in an anticipatory memorandum sense.
