Austin has joined various cities in installing cameras to catch speeders. They nailed 36 violators who just happen to be police officers running lights. The officers were not responding to a call. None of them were ticketed.
Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo responded with a powerful statement: “It is a concern. We talk about it to our folks.” Wow, it is a “concern.”
How much of a concern would it be when these police cruisers crash into a passenger car.
The Chief also rejected the notion of officers paying tickets for running lights: “What we do and what our policy is if that occurs is that we use progressive discipline to correct the behavior in either training or correct the behavior and so far, we haven’t had anybody do it twice. From my perspective, you’ve got to have your lights on, its required by the code.” Perhaps, citizens should be given the same warning notice before citations are issued.

Do you ever wonder why it is so hard to manage a police force when no one is consistantly applying the rules? B207a – Uniform Traffic Enforcement Policy & Tolerance Chart – If enforcement takes place with apparent favoritism and non-uniformity, residents will reject the program and the enforcement agency. Or: .03 Operation of Police Vehicles
A. Employees shall operate City-owned vehicles, and privately owned vehicles being used for official purposes, in a careful and prudent manner. They shall obey traffic laws and departmental policies. Or: G. Red Light Camera Citations Employees who receive a civil citation for running a red light while operating a City vehicle will be responsible for paying the fine in a timely manner.
1. The employee’s supervisor will complete, and submit to the Municipal Court, the ‘Affidavit of Non-Liability’ naming the individual driving at the time of the citation; transferring the liability from the City to the employee.
2. Emergency Response Vehicles (lights and sirens not activated) The Chief, or designee will determine if the vehicle’s driver received a citation as a result of responding to an emergency.
a. If yes, the employee’s supervisor will submit documentation to the Municipal Court, including the CAD number, stating the cited driver was responding to an emergency call and the citation should be dismissed.
b. If no, the employee’s supervisor will complete the ‘Affidavit of Non-Liability’ naming the individual driving at the time of the citation, transferring the liability from the City to the employee.

At least if a police officer ran a red light, they should put there revolving light on and give everyone a chance at least.
Seriously? This is what you have to complain about? When was the last time you were in an APD patrol car? Probably never. Have you ever ridden with a police officer? Do you know what they have to do while driving? No. Get your facts before you start complaining about something.
You should be grateful to APD for keeping your city safe. You should be thanking the officers for doing something you can’t and won’t do.

Accidents more than doubled at the Houston, Texas intersections where red light cameras are installed, according to a study released Monday by Rice University and the Texas Transportation Institute (TTI). This result posed a dilemma for TTI and the city of Houston which had requested the study. Houston Mayor Bill White was furious when he saw the report’s draft text in August. He banned the document from publication and ordered a re-writing of the text that would reflect a more positive result.

Houston, Texas red light camera setup mails out $2 million in tickets every month.
Houston, Texas has solved the problem caused by a law that took effect in September forcing the city to split one-half of red light camera profit with the state. By citing motorists for turning right on red and installing twenty new cameras in high-volume locations, Houston is pocketing more money than it did before the profit limitation law kicked in.
Tickets mailed in September were worth $882,525 but jumped to $2 million in October as a result of the changes. Some $270,000 of the increase came from motorists who turned on red and about $950,000 came from the new locations. The Houston Police Department denied the changes were designed to make up for lost revenue.
