A Sign of the Times: Colorado Billboard Proclaims the Lunacy Taking Hold in America

A billboard in Colorado is causing considerable controversy and gives an insight into the radical fringe of America. The billboard by car dealership owner Phil West in Wheat Ridge, Colorado combines the “birther” controversy with the suggestion that Obama is both a Muslim and a terrorist. It further makes the bizarre connection to Fort Hood — suggesting that Obama could at any time go on a shooting spree in the West Wing.

The billboard shown above included a cartoon of Obama wearing a Muslim turban and reads “PRESIDENT or JIHAD?” It also says “WAKE UP AMERICA! REMEMBER FT. HOOD!”

West sees nothing wrong in such a message. He insisted in one interview “You can’t suggest things. You can’t profile. You gotta call a spade a spade.”

He further adds (while dancing on the edge of sanity) “[e]verything I have read about Mr. Obama points right to the fact that he is a Muslim. And that is the agenda of what Muslim is all about. It’s about anti-American, it’s about anti-Christianity.” People buy cars from this man.

My favorite quote, however, comes from passing motorist Keith Walters: “I can’t honestly say he’s a Jihadist, but there’s a lot of things that are questionable. The whole birth certificate controversy. From what I’ve read, there’s no proof Obama isn’t a Muslim. And I don’t believe there’s any racism [in the billboard]. I think that should be a question asked to any president who — they have some questionable backgrounds.”

I love the use of “proving the negative.” The sign is legitimate because “there’s no proof Obama isn’t a Muslim.” There’s no proof that he is not the Anti-Christ or the Second Coming either.

By the way, Obama makes a terrible Muslim. He smokes, drinks, attends Church, fails to observe any Islamic holidays, raises his children as Christians, and eats pork. Pat Robertson would make a better Muslim.

It is moments like this that one wonders how we succeeded in forming a nation of self-government, let alone acquired nuclear weapons.

  1. “Prof: It is moments like this that one wonders how we succeeded in forming a nation of self-government, let alone acquired nuclear weapons.”
    =================================================================

We didn’t … the generations that formed this nation were a lot smarter than we are in that they knew how to ignore the crazies.

  2. LK,

I think a great many of us are completely exasperated. That quote was interesting because many of us who are progressive could have said the same thing. Executive malfeasance is being solidified and Congress is of little help. It doesn’t seem to matter what we need to do, it just won’t get done. I saw an article about how it is impossible to negotiate with the earth on climate change. Absolutely true. We need health care and financial help to the poor, working and middle class right now. Not gonna happen. Instead, we are getting more troops in Afghanistan. It is all so crazy I don’t know what to do. There are enlightened despots and I wish our ruling elite would come along that far! Instead they are simply despots. It’s why I do think we need a general strike, something that will stop the nation in its tracks and force the govt. to get moving. They will either declare martial law or they will have to take some measures to make things right.

  3. bdaman is back, as a troll.

A troll is an anonymous poster drops in with pasteups and links to topics totally unrelated to the tread, and often inflammatory, in an effort to hijack the discussion.

    Do not feed the troll.

Under zero tolerance for liars policy at Turley blog:

Both bdaman and Larry Sinclair are despicable liars.

    QUOTE
    Larry Sinclair For Newbies.

    By kravitz – June 13, 2008, 2:17AM

This is a guy who alleges he did cocaine and had oral sex with Senator Barack Obama in 1999.

His claims do not hold up. Even as swiftboating, it’s pretty lame. For the number of times his story has been proven to be a downright lie, like a Bozo punching toy, he gets right back up and says the same thing again. Nothing in his story holds up, and he is a convicted felon who has failed a rather notable lie detector test. See below.

Under the banner of the National Press Club, we will hear more from this tortured soul later this month. For the moment, for those who actually found real news to report or read, a few notable pieces of how we got to this point. Oh yeah, the National Press Club doesn’t even want Sinclair to use their logo or suggest he is coming as their guest or at their invitation. UNQUOTE

  4. I saw Mr. West on The Ed Show last night. He is a very frustrated man. At one point in the interview toward the end ED asked him something and Mr. West replied (not verbatim but close enough to convey the idea) ‘people are fed up, it didn’t seem to matter if it was Bush or Clinton or Obama, every President seems to come into office and take the worst policies of the previous President and build on them…’

That’s very much like my own observations. Mr. West struck me as a guy that realized that there were systemic problems with our two (allegedly two) party system and hadn’t a clue as to what it all meant or how we got to this point or how to correct it. Obama and the birther thing seemed to be his straw man for all the possibility real objections he has but is too ignorant to ferret out and/or articulate. It was an interesting interview.

  5. Bdaman,

There are many problems with the Democrats in general and President Obama in particular (as many people here like Jill and Buddha have pointed out), but “The Big Lie” is the signature move of the Republicans:

    There are WMD’s in Iraq

Saddam Hussein is a threat to America

Deregulation and tax cuts will solve all of our economic problems

    (I could go on…)

If you want to make substantive arguments about the current administration, go ahead, but the wingnut theories that you promote only serve to dumb down and inflame our national discourse.

On the subject of Bob Bauer being appointed as Whitehouse Counsel, no president has done such a thing since… GWB appointed Harriet Miers.

    http://ohforgoodnesssake.com/?p=4895

Were you outraged at her appointment?

As far as JBJD goes, she’s a school teacher (granted, she does have – or claims to have – a law degree) and while I’m not a lawyer, my guess is that the only result of her election fraud complaints will be to establish that Barack Obama is eligible to be on the ballot (and president) – if anyone manages to get one of these complaints into court at all. (And, by the way, they aren’t complaints against President Obama, they’re complaints against Democratic party officials who certified him eligible…)

And again with the global warming denial… I looked at the supposedly damming e-mails and didn’t see anything that was more than mildly inappropriate, if that. If you parse out every word in the email and spin as hard as you can you might think that there’s fraud going on, but in reality there’s no ‘there’ there. Nate Silver at fivethirtyeight.com had a good article on this (although I think he’s even overstating the improprieties):

    http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2009/11/i-read-through-160000000-bytes-of.html

Finally, FYI, the problem with ACORN is that it legitimately registers a lot of lower income voters (and does a lot of good for low-income people in general) who tend to vote democratic. God forbid that poor people exercise their constitutional right to vote!

  6. Bdaman,

Welcome back. Who have you been most recently before this incarnation?

  7. Thanks for keeping the conspiracy alive. This is once again heating up.

Now that Climategate is in full swing http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/viscount-monckton-on-global-warminggate-they-are-criminals-pjm-exclusive/

and Acorn goes to the dumpster http://biggovernment.com/2009/11/23/california-acorn-spokesman-responds-to-revelation-of-massive-doc-dump-and-data-breach/

    We must look to
    Goebbel’s “Big Lie” technique:

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

The recent promotion of Obama’s personal attorney to Whitehouse Counsel (Anita Mao Si Dunn’s Husband) which correct me if I’m wrong, Pelosi’s Attorney and the first time in presidential history that a president has BOUGHT his personal attorney into the Whitehouse. (IMO conflict of interest) especially when his firm was paid over a million dollars.

Then you have the OIP in Hawaii Mr. Paul T. Tsukiyama, ex-Director of the Office of Information Practices (OIP) in Hawaii has been appointed Vice-President & Director of Human Resources at Hawaii Health Systems Corporation. Many see this, including me as a pay for play, and thanks for keeping hush, hush. But we now know that President Obama is not about transparency at all. If he was he would allow full disclosure of all of his records.

I may suck but I can honestly say I’m not a sucker!

  8. I suggest that Mr. West wouldn’t know the difference between a Muslim and a Sikh. However, I believe that he does understand the citizens of Wheat Ridge, Colorado. Expect a spike in sales at his dealership.

  9. What concerns me are the patterns emerging. Patterns we have traditionally called “the fringe”.

On closer analysis we might consider them “those who are not afraid to say what others think is crazy”, because “the fringe” implies that they are a tiny minority.

When nations are in as much trouble as the U.S. is, these numbers can change insanely, because rational behaviour can fade into the background and become second fiddle.

The many single instances this blog masterfully pulls out of the fabric of our society and shows us daily are considerable indicators.

We need to consider the forest, as well as these strange trees, so as to formulate some systemic remedies.

  10. Here you go, birthers.

You should be mad about stuff like this:

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/11/23/systemic-risk-panel-would_n_368471.html

Your lack of focus and purposeful misdirection (in the case of trolls) is blinding you from seeing real problems. Like that. Do you feel government isn’t doing their job? Are you angry about it? Then do something CONCRETE about it. Pick a battle you can win. Because Obama is a citizen. Period. End of story. It’s good enough for the courts, if you don’t like it, too bad.

  11. By the way, Obama makes a terrible Muslim. He smokes, drinks, attends Church, fails to observe any Islamic holidays, raises his children as Christians, and eats pork. Pat Robertson would make a better Muslim.

Heck he’d make a bad Mormon too. Does that mean that he could be a Priest of another faith?

Well, well. I guess, he meant nothing racist in this remark. Is it just me or do some of these people appear to be sitting on a wire?

  12. Welcome to Idiot America, where: any theory is “valid” by its very existence; if enough people belive that theory, it must be a fact; and if enough people fervently believe it, the fact must be the truth.
