California Senator (and Fierce Opponent to Gay Rights) Reportedly Arrested for DUI After Leaving Gay Bar

State Sen. Roy Ashburn (R-Calif.) is known as a fierce opponent of gay rights. It was, therefore, more than a bit curious when he was arrested for drunk driving after reportedly leaving a gay bar with an unidentified man in the passenger seat.

While there may certainly be more to this story, gay advocates are having a field day. In his apology, Ashburn leaves much to speculation:

“I am deeply sorry for my actions and offer no excuse for my poor judgment. I accept complete responsibility for my conduct and am prepared to accept the consequences for what I did. I am also truly sorry for the impact this incident will have on those who support and trust me – my family, my constituents, my friends, and my colleagues in the Senate.”

The state-issued Chevy Tahoe was seen swerving and the father of four identified himself. His companion was not identified and was not detained. He was believed to be leaving Faces, a popular gay bar in Sacramento. Faces bills itself as the city’s “premier gay and lesbian nightclub” and holds such events as “Dragalicious” on Sunday night.

  1. Almost without my malehood at the time. I found out how intimidating a Butch could be. Kind of put a damper on the rest of the evening.

  2. Rafflaw –
” This isn’t accused of being gay because it is not a crime. He is being accused of being a hypocrite……who happens to be gay. ”

    I couldn’t agree more!

    Byron –
” If the guy is gay and has children and a wife he has trashed them and will subject them to a huge emotional trauma. Divorce sucks for children.

It is too bad if he is gay that he didn’t think about his nature before he got married and had children. And to bad for society that he felt compelled to have to do that. ”

You’re absolutely right on point. You have no idea what this kind of discovery can do to a wife….an adult life of lies! If he does in fact admit to being gay I hope his family are justly compensated for the fraud committed against them!

  3. This guy has been doing what all anti-gay Republicans do. They bash gays and pass anti-gay laws and they all seem to end up drunk or under the influence of drugs in a gay bar. This isn’t accused of being gay because it is not a crime. He is being accused of being a hypocrite……who happens to be gay.

  4. Ecookie,

I learned a very valuable lesson very young. Never go to a Gay bar to pick up women. They are not amused. I can personally attest to that fact. One of the scariest moments that I as a 23 year old male could have ever learned. I have never tried that trick again.

  5. Will individuals in the gay community eventually out more of these hypocritical politicians?

  6. You are right empire cookie. The family values people are not exactly gay friendly.

  7. Duh, “What is taking place here, is the Senator is being accused of being gay because he allegedly went to a gay bar.”

No, I don’t think so. There have always been straight people who go to gay bars and everyone knows that – well anyone who has ever been to a gay bar anyway. But so-called family values republicans are not friends of Dorothy and you are unlikely to find them there. That was my point and that’s why people are jumping to this conclusion. When a family values type goes to a gay bar, chances are it’s because he’s a closet case.

“If he went to a gay bar, the gay community should be happy that he took the time to do so. Maybe he will learn something, which may help them to achieve equality.”

If he IS straight and just went to a gay bar for fun or on some strange fact finding mission (and did not go there for some nefarious purpose – eg., to catch someone else out), then I completely agree with you.

  8. A friend told me once that he didn’t see how anyone could suck a dick because he had a hard enough time just holding it in his mouth. I told him I wouldn’t know because I was always the recipient and it really didn’t matter much to me.

“I always woke up with a pounding headache and luckily that was it.”

You never know what they were putting in those beers. Ruffies work on men too. 🙂

  10. AY, swathmoremom you should have this discussion on the Perils of going green thread. This is about gay bars and the possibility of a man being gay.

  11. I used to go to one every Wednesday night for a promo.
It was called Sink or Swim, 10 cent well brands all night. I always woke up with a pounding headache and luckily that was it.

  12. The rye stays green all winter but in a normal year you have to water it all the time. I did not know you were a gardener.

  13. Duh:

you are right, I went to a gay bar in college with a guy who lived upstairs from me. Although I did have a beer with my friend, I compromised and drank it extremely quickly.

I remember seeing a guy I worked with at night at UPS loading trucks, he looked at me and I looked at him, I was thinking the same thing he was thinking “you’re gay?”. He was wrong, I guess I was right. So Sen. Ashburn could indeed be straight as you say. And just went with a buddy who happened to be gay to have a beer.

People make a big deal out of this because he is a family values republican. But if he isn’t gay it doesn’t speak very well for them, actually it doesn’t speak well for them either way. If the guy is gay and has children and a wife he has trashed them and will subject them to a huge emotional trauma. Divorce sucks for children.

It is too bad if he is gay that he didn’t think about his nature before he got married and had children. And to bad for society that he felt compelled to have to do that.

  14. I can assure you swartmore mom, I planted Rye and fertilized it quite well. I have had to cut and mow tow times now. I edged and trimmed on Monday. Cool as it was. I have the greenest yard in the neighborhood. Spring cleaning was before the last snow.
