Mountain Tragedy: Woman Killed by Lightning Shortly Before Boyfriend Was To Propose to Her

This story is absolutely horrific. In Western North Carolina, Richard Butler went with his girlfriend, Bethany Lott, 25, on a hike to the top of a mountain. His plan was to propose to her at the top. However, when they reached the top, lightning struck and killed Lott.

The accident occurred on Max Patch Mountain in the Pisgah National Forest, which is along the Appalachian Trail.

He had the ring in hand when the lightning struck. He said that she had just said “God baby, look at it. Isn’t it beautiful?”

Without question, one of the saddest stories that I have read.

  1. Jericho,

Surely you are funna us. The are waiting for him to be mentally evaluated before they try him for interfering with official work of the forestry department and intentional and reckless disregard for human life for placing someone in a position of a known harm.

  2. Accidents?
We still have these? I thought everything was a crime by now?

Was there no prosecuter nearby who would’ve wanted to file a criminal complaint and try to make this poor man’s life a living hell? Surely someone would’ve wanted that… maybe it’s too nice out…

  3. Lightening is also called “engagement” because the presenting part of the fetus is then engaged in the mother’s pelvis. Yet I have seen no mention of the danger it presents the mother. Wait. Okay, lightning. Got it.
