PORTEOUS IMPEACHMENT TRIAL — DAY FIVE

The fifth day of the Senate trial for United States District Court Judge Thomas Porteous starts today at 8 a.m.

Some this testimony will center on Article IV of the impeachment. I have attached our motions to dismiss Article Fourth and our general summary if you are following the case.

    The Senate is still on track for a post-Thanksgiving session in which members will vote on four articles of impeachment against New Orleans federal Judge Thomas Porteous.

    Before the session, the Senate Impeachment Trial Committee will meet to approve a “neutral” summary of the trial the panel conducted last month on the impeachment articles unanimously approved last March by the House of Representatives.

    When the Senate convenes to settle the issue, the senators will hear closing arguments by the House Impeachment prosecutors, led by Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and Porteous’ lawyers, led by George Washington University Law professor Jonathan Turley.

    Porteous is accused of taking gifts, including cash, trips and free meals, from lawyers and a bail bonds company with business before him. If two thirds of the senators voting approve one or more of the impeachment articles, Porteous would be stripped of his $174,000 job and lose his federal pension.

I thought most of you bloggers were students oor ex-students of Jon’s. I thought I was the lone AARP card holder. I’ll get reenergized when I hear the trial report is finalized [before 11-15-2010?]and Jon’s argument is scheduled before the full senate [before Thangsgiving break?].

    ATLANTA (AP) — A veteran federal judge faces drug and firearms charges after an exotic dancer at an Atlanta strip club told authorities he used cocaine, marijuana and other illegal drugs with her.

    Prosecutors said Senior U.S. District Judge Jack T. Camp was arrested Friday after handing an undercover agent $160 for cocaine and Roxycodone, a narcotic pain medication.

    Authorities said they also found two firearms in the front seat of his vehicle.

    The 67-year-old Camp was released Monday on a $50,000 bond. His attorney said the judge intends to plead not guilty and would probably take a leave of absence.

    In an affidavit, officials said Camp met the dancer, who was a federal informant, at the Goldrush Showbar in Atlanta and began paying her for sex and buying cocaine from her.
