Congresswomen Moves To Stop Military From Spending $100 Million in NASCAR Endorsements

Rep. Betty McCollum, D-Minnesota, has come up with an easy way to say $100 million: end military sponsorships of NASCAR. Most people might be a bit surprised to learn that we are spending $100 million for NASCAR endorsements, but that cost is quite modest when you consider that the military is willing to spend almost $500,000 for a flyover of a closed football stadium.

McCollum wants to bar the endorsement in the 2011 House budget bill.

While most people would find it shocking that our schools are cutting teachers and resources while the military is willing to pay $100 million for race car endorsement. I am not one of those people. As previously noted, I have filled out the form requesting a flyover at this year’s Turley Turkey Bowl. I would now like to add a request for an endorsement of the Turley McLean Bears football team. I am only asking for $1 million a year over the next 10 years — one tenth of the expense of NASCAR.

The National Guard sponsors Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s team, the Army sponsors Ryan Newman, and the Air Force sponsors AJ Allmendinger. That leaves the Navy and the Marines open for the Turkey Bowl endorsement.

If my request is refused, I would hope that we could simply end all product or sports endorsements from the military. This appears to be an example of a budget that should be trimmed if it is being wasted in this way.

Scott Walker refused a D.O.T. award of $800 million to build a high speed railroad line between Milwaukee and Madison. It was to be part of a Chicago-Milwaukee-Minneapolis route. Walker thought he could use the money for highway construction, but it doesn’t work that way. The money has now been distributed among 13 other states that aren’t governed by morons.

  2. $100 Million is a bald faced lie! 11.6 million in 2009 and 7 million in 2010. This article is pure and smelly BS!!

  3. Blouise,
I would like to echo your comments about keeping our eyes on the state issues. The Republicans have succeeded in keeping progressive judges off of the bench and they are currently attacking women’s issues in many states. This Walker Teapublican is using this financial crisis to try to break the unions in Wisconsin. Isn’t this the same guy who refused stimulus money for the high speed rail systems?

“El Cid finds himself exiled in liberal land … fear not, the Moors will save you … see, just over the horizon … a triangle hat festooned with teabag fringe … jump on your elephant and ride like the wind ….”

Lmao – he appears to be an ornery type, “YOU DAMNED KIDS GET OFF OF MY LAWN!”

Ever hear the one about El Cid and the camel ….. weeell, El Cid and his camel walk into a bar ….

I posted a long (for me) comment on Scott Walker about an hour ago on the tail end of the “Throwing a Curveball” thread. I didn’t know the Wisconsin stuff was being discussed here. Blouise, keep an eye on what Walker does in Wis. You may be getting a preview of what Kasich will do in Ohio. I think Walker and Kasich are are joined at the hip. Evil twins on a rampage. In Wis.,the Senate and Assembly are now both in Republican hands also, so Walker has a free hand to do the harm he did to Milwaukee County on a grander scale. And he’s in a damned big hurry.

    Wisconsin’s state motto is “Forward”.

Soon it will be “You’re On Your Own, Mack”.

  7. My two favorite parts of the Politico article:

“House Speaker John Boehner sharply criticized President Obama on Thursday for “unleashing” Organizing for America in Wisconsin to pressure Gov. Scott Walker to abandon anti-union legislation.”

    and my favorite:

“Until they do, they are not focusing on jobs, and they are not listening to the American people who put them in power.”

The scent of hypocrisy with an undertone of fake outrage – yummy!

  8. I urge the Crier to get in touch with reality.

If Obama isn’t screwing over the unions enough for the RNC?

    Too damn bad.

He can get off his lazy orange ass and do the union busting himself like his heroes in Peru, Venezuela and Germany.

  9. UPDATE: House Speaker John Boehner called on Obama to pull OfA out of the effort:

“I’m disappointed that instead of providing similar leadership from the White House, the president has chosen to attack leaders such as Gov. Walker, who are listening to the people and confronting problems that have been neglected for years at the expense of jobs and economic growth,” Boehner said in a statement. “I urge the president to order the DNC to suspend these tactics.”

  10. The middle class is not created by government. anyone that thinks it is, is lacking in the most basic economic understanding.

In fact they have the understanding of a 2 year old.

  11. eniobo,

Oh you’ve got trouble too … but your dude is a real buffoon … these guys out here are serious flesh-eaters … if you know what I mean …

  12. “that is where the real battle against the American middle and lower class is taking place.”

Does Chris Christie ring a bell?

    The new **Wizard of Oz**.

I’ve been working on this action for awhile. I put my money and my hands where my mouth is.

It has to be done or the republicans will succeed is stamping out the middle class one state at a time under the guise of “fiscal responsibility” … failing to mention, of course, that they and their buddies at the banks and on Wall Street created the mess in the first place.
