“A Bridge Too Far”: Gov. Brewer Vetoes Birther Bill

In a surprise move for many critics, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer vetoed the bill that would have required President Barack Obama and other presidential candidates to prove they were born in the United States before their names could have been placed on the state ballot. We previously discussed the bill and the serious constitutional questions that it raised. A former Secretary of State, Brewer objected to one state imposing such conditions on candidates.

Brewer stated that “[a]s a former Secretary of State, I do not support designating one person as a gatekeeper to the ballot for a candidate, which could lead to arbitrary or politically-motivated decisions. She went on to suggest that some of the conditions were simply demeaning: “I never imagined being presented with a bill that could require candidates for President of the greatest and most powerful nation on earth to submit their ‘early baptismal or circumcision certificates’ among other records to the Arizona Secretary of State. This is a bridge too far.”

The move saved Arizona the expense of a costly challenge that would have likely resulted in a defeat for Arizona in the courts.

However, thirteen other states are currently considering the same type of legislation. While the veto in Arizona may deter some, this may still become a court battle leading up to the elections.

  1. W=c,

“and what is our saving grace at this moment in history?”

The information age is making it harder for liars of both parties to be remain unexposed when they sellout and break the law.

Whether the American corpus politicum has the fortitude to hold them and their corporate masters accountable is another question altogether. If you kick a dog enough times though, they will bite. When the middle class is kicked and squeezed enough, they’ll take action.

And as far as Harper goes? It goes beyond simple fault. He’s not just another lying pol, but a bad guy for certain. Look into him for yourself if you doubt it.

  6. Mr. Obama was in the middle of his remarks when a woman in a white suit stood up and said, Mr. President we wrote you a song. POTUS tried to get her to wait until later, but she persisted and the table of 10 broke into a song that pointed out they’d just spent $5,000 donating to his campaign and went on to protest the treatment of Pfc. Bradley Manning. The woman stayed standing as they sang. Mr. Obama looked to Ms. Pelosi and asked, Nancy did you do this? Ms. Pelosi had a look on her face, as she stared at the singing group, that definitely said she did not. The song – will send quotes after transcribe – talked about Bradley Manning and how he is “alone in a cell…”

The 10 singers then passed around 8.5×11 signs that said “Free Bradley Manning” or had a photo of him. Then the woman in the white suit stripped off her jacket to reveal a black T-shirt that said Free Bradley Manning, with an image of him. “We paid our dues. Where’s our change?” they sang. USSS and WH staff had moved near the table at this point. The woman was escorted out. Two others left on their own. (The rest stayed and applauded at the end of POTUS’s speech.)

“That was a nice song,” a displeased Mr. Obama said. “Now where was I?” POTUS asked. As was indicated by that song, “Over the last 2 and a half years, change turned out to be tougher than we expected,” POTUS said.

Subject: Pool report #1a – song lyrics

    Here it is:

Dear Mr. President we honor you today sir
Each of us brought you $5,000
It takes a lot of Benjamins to run a campaign
I paid my dues, where’s our change?
We’ll vote for you in 2012, yes that’s true
Look at the Republicans – what else can we do
Even though we don’t know if we’ll retain our liberties
In what you seem content to call a free society
Yes it’s true that Terry Jones is legally free
To burn a people’s holy book in shameful effigy
But at another location in this country
Alone in a 6×12 cell sits Bradley
23 hours a day is night
The 5th and 8th Amendments say this kind of thing ain’t right
We paid our dues, where’s our change?

One of the singers gave your pooler the lyrics, written out on the back of the menu for the fundraiser. It includes the website freshjuiceparty.com

Also, on POTUS – your pooler would say he took the song in stride and at first he didn’t seem to realize it was a protest song.

  7. In fact, if Canadian Eh is lurking, I’m sure she’ll be glad to dish you some dirt on Harper.

  8. W=c,

You may want to investigate domestic Canadian politics before you get too excited. They too are plagued with insane greedsters posing as conservatives. Their only saving grace is the Liberal party up there can actually muster enough force and votes in Parliament to keep Harper and his goons somewhat in check as opposed to here where both sides are completely sold out. But do a little research on Stephen Harper’s history. You’ll find he’s every bit as unsavory a corporatist character as Bush and the Neocons here.

  9. Woosty,

The books that Trump writes only have chapters numbered 11–lots and lots of Chapters 11.

I believe a number of students who paid money to “attend” Trump’s online business school have filed a lawsuit against him.

What a great businessman–even his casinos go bankrupt! LOL!

  11. Go run and tell Doc Bdaman says he( Doc C.) received a response to his FOIA request and he’s not sharing. It’s either that or Doc C is still waiting for the most transparent president in history.

  12. 43 other presidents have not. What do they have to hide? I guess your argument is that President

We are not talking about the 43 others. You see, you want to focus on everything else except the one single thing that proves without a doubt that Obama was born in Hawaii and is no doubt a natural born citizen.

Show us what Fukino looked at.

“The only people who don’t want to disclose the truth are people with something to hide.”

Obama is the only honest and transparent POTUS in our history…

Pick any one and get back to me on that.

I had a gun safety idea 15 years ago that I got absolutely no support for when I wrote to the Steamboat Springs CO police to suggest it.

A lot of people there had guns. There was a bullet hole through our window and the police refused to even ask the neighbors about it. We had a dispute with our neighbor and the fact that he frequently carried a gun made it seem even more scary. A man I knew who was married and had two kids got upset and put his own gun in his mouth.

Someone I knew left his shot gun loaded. He had a heart attack and died and his gun was found 5 years later.

My idea was that the police should operate free gun storage lockers where hunters and the relatives of hunters could voluntarily and safely store their guns when they weren’t using them. Then they wouldn’t have the expense of a gun locker, plus there would be more security. People who don’t want to get rid of guns belonging to old hunters or guns that they inherited could store them safely with minimal effort.

  14. Most likely all Trump has found is a pack of scurrilous lies from Jerome Corsi…

    Bdaman,

President Obama has disclosed his official birth certificate – 43 other presidents have not. What do they have to hide? I guess your argument is that President Obama is the only honest and transparent POTUS in our history…

  15. I can’t believe that we are actually looking at anything Donald Trump is saying. Truth is another foreign word to that idiot.
