Majority of Weiner Constituents Want Him To Remain Their Representative

It is the ultimate example of voters getting the representatives that they deserve. A recent poll shows 56 percent of constituents of Anthony Weiner want him to remain in office. I spoke on the Weiner scandal on CNN last night.

For years, Democrats have been criticizing the blind loyalty shown to politicians from Tom DeLay to David Vitter. Yet, in New York, voters want to retain a politicians who spent a week piling lie upon lie over the sending of lewd photos. In addition, some of the women complained that they only wanted to talk politics — making (if true) Weiner a type of virtual flasher. He then alleged that a crime of hacking was committed and attacked media — calling them foul names and blaming them for the scandal. Despite this record, the voters want Weiner to continue to speak for them. Weiner only admitted his lies when pictures emerged showing him and confirming his role. Stories have now emerged suggesting that he contacted at least one woman to try to convince her to lie.

What exactly does it take? Just because you like his politics and he attacks people you dislike does not excuse a member in such despicable conduct. When people complain about Congress being a cesspool, they need to consider how their own blind loyalties contribute to that problem.

Weiner is now saying that his wife is making him stay in office, though others have suggested that he needs this job. In the end, it is up to the voters to determine the minimal level of honesty and integrity required to be their representative in Congress.

I, too, think people should consider their blind loyalty to politicians–whether they are Democrats or Republicans. What Congressman Weiner did showed a terrible lack of common sense, good judgment, and maturity. Sending a young woman–who had not solicited it– a picture of his genitalia does seem to me to be a form of flashing/indecent exposure/exhibitionism.

Is this type of behavior really typical of the majority of men? I think not. I wonder: Is it normal? Is what Weiner did indicative of a psychological disorder?

  2. @Former Federal: Turley is an attorney and an instructor at GWU, which I know confers a “J.D.” which stands for “Juris Doctor,” a doctorate in law. My calling him Doctor is an educated guess as to his education.

  3. Like I said in an earlier post about the congressman,I get a chance to hear a lot of radio and I’ve heard many of his constituents come forward and say why they like this congressman,One station brought into play Jennefer Flowers playing a tape of Bill Clinton and his lustful conversation. And I( forget the other young lady who also came forward). And Clinton became President. So you have to give the people what they want I guess.

  4. If he has not broken any laws or sell votes then I guess the voters in his district get to decide is he should stay or go. I think he has been a good Congressman. I am deeply disappointed in his behavior and question if he can be as good in the future when we will forever be reminded of his stupid, crumby acts.

There have been, and still are, many more unethical and stupider members in the House so for me the bar is set at legal or ethical (based on actions in the House separate from personal) misbehavior. And I will stick to that, unlike so many elected officials and TV pundits no matter if they have an R or a D after their name.

  5. Here’s a thought:

How many elected female politicians have been caught hiring prostitutes, sending pics of their naked body parts through the “intertubes”, cheating on their spouses? Perhaps they haven’t done it or perhaps they are smart about how they do it … soooo

Solve the problem … stop electing men to office … only women need apply.

But then sadly we might have to stop talking about sex, sex, sex …

While Professor Turley is about the only man I would coronate King, I do not think he has a Ph.D. accompanying his plethoric credentials. Correct me if I am in error.

  7. “Dr. Turley is painting their reaction as irrational, when it may be that demanding Weiner resign is even MORE irrational.”

    Tony C.

    I agree.

  8. I believe there is a fundamental difference in lying about one’s personal sex life and lying on the job about the job, and I think it is yet another thing to engage in hypocrisy on the job (vilifying gays when one is gay, or using “family values” to garner votes when one cheating on a spouse with a staffer or intern or campaign manager or hooker).

I don’t lie about either, but I also do not think being dishonest about sexual activity, an emotional and physical activity, automatically implies a politician will be dishonest about their rational take on policy, bills, or social issues.

There is no evidence I am aware of that Weiner is anything but a hard-left liberal progressive, in his voting record or public statements on policy. If that stance represents his district, then why should they take the chance of screwing that up? Everybody keeps saying this is a distracton from the real news on the budget, the debt, the financial crisis and the jobs: Maybe his constituents are paying attention to the budget, the debt, the financial crisis and jobs, and they think Weiner’s predictable vote on those issues outweigh whatever time he wastes on his libido, and because they are focused on the right thing they don’t want to roll the dice on a replacement appointment.

Dr. Turley is painting their reaction as irrational, when it may be that demanding Weiner resign is even MORE irrational.

  9. Sex, sex, sex … pictures about sex … lies about sex … shame about sex … talk about sex … write about sex … sex, sex, sex

  10. Rep. Weiner appears to be guilty of being a jerk. I wouldn’t vote for him for Husband of the Year. Whether he remains in office is up to his constituents, unless he is redistricted out. In that case, what does it matter what his constituents think?

For progressives to give up on Weiner, who appears to be a jerk and a less-than-stellar husband, when actual criminals like Vitter stay in office, would be counterproductive.

If liberals and conservatives are jerks in equal proportions, and the liberal jerks get forced out of office and the conservative jerks get to stay, simple arithmetic mandates that eventually the government will consist entirely of conservative jerks.

  11. You said “Weiner Constituents”, which is not to be confused with “Hot Dog Ingredients”.

  12. Continued support of this representative is an example of how blind political partisanship trumps honor, ethics, and morality. Neither he nor his constituents can be shamed into admitting the egregious nature of his actions.

  13. I don’t know if he should go or stay but I would prefer him to my congressman, Pete Sessions. Watched the Spitzer show before the MAVS game. Go MAVS.
