Residents in Houston are a bit concerned when Harris County police decided to call off a manhunt of an escaped prisoner because of the heat. The man was arrested for possession and suspected of robbery. However, he was able to get out of his handcuffs during transport and escaped. The police started the manhunt but then called it off because it was just to darn hot.
The escape occurred around noon and police decided the heat was taking its toll on the officers and their dogs. It does not appear that the man waited out of a sense of fair play for the temperature to drop.

CERTIORARI TO THE UNITED STATES COURT OF APPEALS FOR THE SECOND CIRCUIT
No. 10–174. Argued April 19, 2011—Decided June 20, 2011

I am less concerned about sea level rise than I am regarding air pollution and the polluting of both fresh and salt water. The rising global temperatures do not sound like much, but we are going to continue seeing WX extremes in both directions for the foreseeable future–all related directly to overall warming.
If the seas rise and drown some of those ticky-tacky beachfront developments, I will not shed a tear. What I will lose sleep over is the REASON the seas rise. That is the major cause for concern. Before he died, my son in Alaska expressed concern about the receding sea ice and loss of the habitat of wildlife the native peoples depended on for sustenance.
The past several years, the Iditarod, which traditionally starts in front of the Fur Exchange in Anchorage, had to have a “show start” for TV. Dump trucks brought snow to spread so the TV cameras could show the start of the race. Then, once out of sight of the cameras, the sleds and dogs were loaded onto trucks and driven out to Eagle Lake where there was actually snow on the ground so the race could start for real.
O.S. you hit the nail on the head. ” Too Many People”
I remember being in the Bahamas in the late 70’s and seeing a Russian trawlers dragging it’s nets. I remember and old Cuban telling me in the Keys over margaritas that Cuba doesn’t have any fish anymore because the same Russian trawlers would run circles around the island filling up the bilges with fish.
Changing Tides: Research Center Under Fire for ‘Adjusted’ Sea-Level Data
Is climate change raising sea levels, as Al Gore has argued — or are climate scientists doctoring the data?
The University of Colorado’s Sea Level Research Group decided in May to add 0.3 millimeters — or about the thickness of a fingernail — every year to its actual measurements of sea levels, sparking criticism from experts who called it an attempt to exaggerate the effects of global warming.
“Gatekeepers of our sea level data are manufacturing a fictitious sea level rise that is not occurring,” said James M. Taylor, a lawyer who focuses on environmental issues for the Heartland Institute.
Taylor calls it tomfoolery.
“There really is no reason to do this other than to advance a political agenda,” he said.
Climate scientist John Christy, a professor at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, said that the amount of water in the ocean and sea level were two different things.
“To me… sea level rise is what’s measured against the actual coast,” he told FoxNews.com. “That’s what tells us the impact of rising oceans.”
Taylor agreed.
“Many global warming alarmists say that vast stretches of coastline are going to be swallowed up by the sea. Well, that means we should be talking about sea level, not about global water volume.”

It is not just the ocean that is practically on life support. The freshwater that supports life on land is at critical mass already. Too many people, not enough fresh water, and the fresh water we have is being polluted. For me, this is not an abstraction. I live downstream from this (see link—sorry, I don’t know how to shorten links like this):

And our atmosphere is sometimes so thick you could almost slice it like bread. When flying, it seems the haze layer is getting thicker and denser. I know for a fact that is true about the haze “bubble” around cities and more densely populated areas.
We cannot wait for the ultimate, definitive, be-all-end-all studies to come in that will convince the most ardent global warming deniers. The clock is ticking now and the data are both convincing and compelling.
Oh and Sea Level Rise
One important change in these releases is that we are now adding a correction of 0.3 mm/year due to Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA), so you may notice that the rate of sea level rise is now 0.3 mm/year higher than earlier releases. This is a correction to account for the fact that the global ocean basins are getting slightly larger over time as mantle material moves from under the oceans into previously glaciated regions on land. Simply subtract 0.3 mm/year if you prefer to not include the GIA correction.
You may also note that rate of sea level rise over recent years has been less than the long-term average. This is believed to be due to the recent La Nina’s we have been experiencing, though research on this is continuing. We will soon add a plot to the web site illustrating this effect.
So they are adjusting sea level rise but if you don’t like it you can subtract it even though in recent years it has been than the long term averages. We think it’s La Nina but we’re not sure we are still doing research.

Diagnosing the state of the Ocean’s health
IPSO is currently compiling the Global State of the Ocean Report, which will collate world-wide marine science to give a comprehensive overview of the health of the Ocean.
The Report is due to be published in 2012 but we already know that the Ocean’s health is in a critical state.
But for now trust us. We are Green Peace.
Sadder still, because it is clear he loves the sea so much.
Been a Bluewater fisherman all my life. The last boat I mated on was a 65 Viking out of Camachee Cove, St. Augustine called the Incognito.
Snow Falling in Colorado on Eve of Northern Hemisphere’s Summer Solstice
The calendar says summer starts tomorrow in the Northern Hemisphere. The snow falling in the mountains of Colorado tells a different story.
A storm that has prompted a tornado watch across Nebraska and Kansas today also left 2 to 4 inches of snow in the Rocky Mountains, said Joe Ramey, a weather service meteorologist in Grand Junction, Colorado.
“It is unusual,” Ramey said. “Here it is the last day of spring.”

Buddha, I was just reading that and you beat me to posting it. The news is getting worse almost by the day. I know you have a scientific background, so you are probably like me. I am having trouble wrapping my head around the level of denial by folks like Bdaman and his pilot friend. Sadder still, because it is clear he loves the sea so much.
It gets worse too . . .

Some folks think the earth is flat. Does not make it so, but they believe it anyway.
Some folks do not believe in evolution. Does not make it so, but they believe it.
Some folks do not believe our earth is inexorably warming due to human influence. Does not make it so, but they believe it.
I am a scientist. I do not base opinions on belief but on longitudinal observations of verifiable data.

O.S. yes I’ve seen you reference you being a pilot and I understand your ability to read weather charts and your understanding of meteorology. As for me I am the main forecaster for 911surfreport.com. I look at weather charts and forecast models everyday. I would say the difference between you and I as it relates to weather is I’m looking for patterns that will produce ocean swells while you are much more focused in the altitude aspects of aviation. So as you can imagine Hurricane Season is when I get cranked up. One of the sites I visit at least twice a day is the Tropical Atlantic e-Wall from Penn State. It gives me three models at one stop I can follow. The GFS, CMC and NOGAPS. As you know there are many many models to choose from but out of all of the years I’ve been doing this these are the three I rely upon. It’s one thing to look at the models. It’s another thing to compare what they forecast to real-time data such as satellite loops. If you look at the last time I updated which was Thursday of last week The GFS HWRF NAM and a few others were all forecasting that a low would develop just off the Carolina Coast and drift South and sit just East of North Florida this Wednesday producing some very large surf. http://911surfreport.com/forecast.php
Guess what they were wrong. Climate models are no different. Climate models just like any other model depends on a human to input the information to achieve an outcome. Contrary to popular belief I know alot more about weather and climate than some here would like to believe.
I want to comment more but I got to put the little one to bed. I’ll be updating my forecast page in the morning to break the bad news that no surf is in the forecast to start week four of the 2011 Hurricane season.
Oh as for pilots. My surfin buddy is a retired Fighter Pilot and veteran of the first Gulf War and now flies for Delta. His main gig is New York to Senegal where he gets to take a few days off and surf in NGOR. He doesn’t believe in GW or CC either and I’m sure he has a good understanding of it also.
Thanks again.
Bdaman. You are welcome. I always try to keep it civil unless I am pushed to the wall and my last nerve stepped on. Then I can get salty, but seldom make it personal.
As for climate and weather. You may recall that I am a pilot and have been flying airplanes for more than sixty years. One of my ratings is in gliders, which requires an extensive knowledge of micrometerology. My knowledge of meteorology extends much further than what you can find on Wikipedia or other popular sites. I have to understand it, because my life depends on it.
It is a major mistake to assume that because we have a cold winter or an unusually hot summer that this phenomenon alone is a predictor of anything. What does matter is sea temperatures, which are more stable than transient atmospheric phenomenon. For example, when global temperatures get warmer, the Gulf Stream gets colder. The reason for that is melting polar ice cools the Gulf Stream, and that affects weather along the GS. These kinds of localized phenomenon are misleading, and unfortunately, are often seized on by those who would argue there is no such thing as global warming or climate change.
Since I know how to read weather charts, and try to keep up with the scientific literature, I am convinced the atmospheric and oceanic changes we are seeing are 1) gradual, 2) increasing at an exponential rate, and 3) are caused by human activity. The latter ranges from industrial emissions, auto and other exhaust gases, destruction of the rain forests, and fires. There are a half dozen other causes, but this is a blog, not a scientific journal.
I do not buy for one minute the screeds from the pseudoscientific “experts” hired by the US Chamber of Commerce, industry spinmeisters, or “studies” bought and paid for by other special interests. There is something called ‘ecological validity’ as well as ‘construct validity’ that must be taken into consideration when looking at studies sponsored by any government, industry or organization with something to sell or protect.
When any of those groups tries to sell me something, I keep my hand firmly on my wallet.
Thank you O.S. for your polite response.
Climate encompasses the statistics of temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind, rainfall, atmospheric particle count and other meteorological elemental measurements in a given region over long periods of time. Climate can be contrasted to weather, which is the present condition of these same elements and their variations over shorter time periods.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate
Weather is the state of the atmosphere, to the degree that it is hot or cold, wet or dry, calm or stormy, clear or cloudy.[1] Most weather phenomena occur in the troposphere,[2][3] just below the stratosphere. Weather refers, generally, to day-to-day temperature and precipitation activity, whereas climate is the term for the average atmospheric conditions over longer periods of time.[4] When used without qualification, “weather” is understood to be the weather of Earth.

Bdaman,
This is how I treat people unwilling to engage in a discussion in good faith. How I treat you is entirely based on your past behavior – if you want me to treat you better, then you should try behaving better. You’ve shown yourself to be a liar, an idiot, and a propagandist (and not a very good one) – do you think that any of those things are worthy of respect? I don’t.
In case you missed it, I completely agree with this comment from Gingerbaker:
First sensible thing you have said in the thread.
Do you actually think the disinformation factoids you spew, which come from paid shills for the energy industry, have not been debunked 1000 times already?
You have no understanding of science, but worse than that, you have no understanding of how much more intelligent and educated and careful than you are the thousands of climate scientists who investigate and publish on the topic.
Your arguments ARE idiotic and moronic – on this topic you ARE a moron and an idiot, it is TRUE that you don’t know what you are talking about, and you have no one to blame but yourself.
Climate change is THE most important problem for humanity; it is vitally important for future generations that we address the issue NOW rather than in years to come. People like you, and the Koch brothers, and the idiot at What’s Up With That, and all the SOB’s who shill for the petro industry, are making our ability to provide a functioning and just society for our children and grandkids less and less probable. You don’t seem to get it, but billions WILL die from this.
The time for treating careless people like you with kid gloves, to treat your studied, self-satisfied ignorance with respect is OVER. You and your ilk are choking the media, polluting the conversation, and preventing the country from acting like a responsible adult. –>There is a scientific consensus on this issue!! <– Either truly educate yourself, or STFU and get out of the way. If not, I hold you nearly as morally responsible as the Koch brothers for the blood of billions to come.
Bdaman, you are conflating regional weather with global climate. There is a vast difference. When there is global warming, or cooling for that matter, there will be regions of unusual cold, just as there are regions of unusual heat. If you look carefully at what climatologists have been saying, a change of global temperature that averages more than half a degree Fahrenheit is significant enough for concern.
But slightly better than being a paid disinformation agent. He can’t engage with anyone – either he’s aware that his arguments have no merit or he’s deluded himself to the point where any argument he makes is necessarily fallacious (and usually obviously so).
It’s not that if you would learn to treat someone how you yourself would like to be treated I just might partake. Look at GingerBaker, I’m an idiot and a moron and I don’t know what I’m talking about. I wont argue with that. In fact for arguments sake I’ll go ahead and agree. I Bdaman, am an idiot and a moron and I don’t know what I’m talking about. There that’s better.
