Tomahawks Over Telescopes: Congress Moves To Scrap Hubble Successor To Save Money

We have often marveled at the extraordinary discoveries and pictures from the Hubble Space Telescope. However, a panel of the House Appropriations Committee Science has moved to cut the successor to Hubble — the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). It is part of a $1.6 billion cut into NASA — an agency already slashed deeply in prior budgets.

The Webb telescope is designed look deeper into space than the Hubble. Its launch is now delayed. It is 75 percent complete, but could now be scrapped.

House Appropriations Chairman Hal Rogers (R-Ky.) said “given this time of fiscal crisis, it is also important that Congress make tough decisions to cut programs where necessary to give priority to programs with broad national reach that have the most benefit to the American people.”

I understand that sentiment but why not make the tough decision to cut funding for our three wars? The Obama Administration has just burned over $1 billion on our latest war. We are literally burning away our scientific and educational foundations to pay for these wars.

  1. Elaine, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo should be on everyone’s bucket list.

There are dozens of videos on YouTube of the Tattoo from over the years.

BTW, on Sunday morning, at the church Kirk) service on the grounds of the Games, they had a Flowers of the Forest ceremony. They read the names of those who had joined the Flowers of the Forest this past year. I lost it when they read Reed’s name. I had been holding a lot in, but that was about too much. They read the names, then a lone piper plays the ancient tune which was written by a member of our family five hundred years ago.

When we buried my son four years ago, the piper also played Flowers of the Forest at his service in the National Cemetery.

  2. Otteray,

Back in 1972 when my husband and I spent three weeks traveling through England and Scotland, we attended the Military Tattoo at Edinburgh Castle. We also saw some highland games in Inverness. It was the best vacation! I have never eaten haggis–and never intend too.

Love the Saor Patrol! Thanks for the video.

  3. Bdaman: “I have not paid much attention to the blog as of late as it’s been family vacation time….”

I wondered where you have been. I hope it’s been a good vacation, mum’s OK and you took the plunge with the C-Pap.

  4. Elaine, this weekend I went to the Highland Games on Grandfather Mountain with my daughter and her boyfriend. Weather was fine except for Sunday morning when it was more like the Outer Hebrides. Good food, good music, and good company along with world class athletics and dancing. My daughter’s boyfriend discovered haggis and Scotch eggs. He loved the food. When I left them Saturday afternoon he had a huge plate of haggis that he was scarfing down.

Sunday, he signed up for the athletic events for next year. A professional coach who was there set him up with a training partner. He is a powerfully built young man and should do well tossing improbable objects great distances. Despite his size and almost superhuman strength, he treats my daughter like a princess. Literally. In a time where we are surrounded by people with no manners, this red headed young man of Scottish descent has the formal manners one might expect of a medieval knight and he talks almost like a character out of a Shakespeare play. I think she did well.

Saor Patrol is one of the musical groups that entertained us this weekend. Saor is pronounced, “Shore,” and is from a Gaelic word that translates as either ‘freedom’ or ‘liberty.’ They generate almost enough energy at their gigs to light a small town.

  5. Henman,

    The-Family-Values-freedom-scope?

    Mespo,

You don’t understand. There are two types of people in the world, Those who agree with Roco and dirty hippie LIEberals.

  6. Otteray,

My husband and I celebrated on Sunday with my daughter and son-in-law. It was their first wedding anniversary. I made some of their favorite foods–lobster rolls and Caesar salad. The weather was perfect.

We watched the US women’s soccer team play Brazil. They beat Brazil in overtime. I thought they were toast considering they were playing down a man.

  7. I can see where being in that position could really suck. You say that as if you’ve had personal experience running afoul of him. For your sake, I certainly hope not.

Yeah he could be a real bitch sometimes but I’ve learned it was really nothing personal it’s just his nature. He really is a good guy. Smart, intelligent, intelligent and smart. Witty, humorous intelligent and smart.
Like the real Buddha he is the all knowing because he is so smart and intelligent witty and smart.

I have not paid much attention to the blog as of late as it’s been family vacation time so I have not seen the revelation of announcement of his extended leave of absence. I hope all is well with him.

MeMe I’m use to your kind, been dealing with it my whole life. In fact I saw a person last night at a benefit concert who’s called me nigger for over thirty years. He looked half dead. Not healthy looking at all. So to you is as I say to him. Your time is gonna come.

  8. Gene H.,

Be wary of the unknown….You never know whom you are going to meet…..

  9. Bdaman,

I’ve met Buddha (who it is my understanding has taken a possibly extended leave of absence) and he was most welcoming. I also found his posts to be both very intelligent and savagely funny. Although I wouldn’t want to be on his bad side, I can see where being in that position could really suck. You say that as if you’ve had personal experience running afoul of him. For your sake, I certainly hope not.

    MeMe,

I think maybe you’ve made a mistake. This isn’t the Stormfront website. You can get there through Google though.

  10. Oh goodie, Bdabitch is back. What white lies are you going to spread this time half breed?
