Galileo and the GOP: Huntsman Takes Stand For Science

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman took a startling position in the GOP debates last night — he suggested that the party not “run from science.” After candidates have lined up to reject everything from global warming to evolution, Huntsman is a standout in his Galileo moment in the GOP.

Huntsman stated:

“Listen, when you make comments that fly in the face of what 98 out of 100 climate scientists have said, when you call into question the science of evolution, all I’m saying is that, in order for the Republican Party to win, we can’t run from science. We can’t run from mainstream conservative philosophy. We’ve got to win voters.”

Wow.

I have long admired Jon Huntsman after we testified together before a House Committee when he was still governor of Utah. We then by coincidence flew back to Utah on the same plane. I found him very bright and engaging. I have little doubt that, if the GOP nominated Huntsman, they would win the White House — with many independent and Democratic votes going to Huntsman. He is moderate on many issues and exceptionally knowledgable about business issues. He also believes in science — a promising factor for a president. It is remarkable that such a position would make Huntsman a standout, but that is a measure of the times in which we are living. Of course, he lost the Pope Urban VIII vote.

With Obama at record lows in the polls, the Democrats are hanging their hopes on the GOP selecting an extremist and rejecting Huntsman. It has been pretty clear for months that Democrats are not going to be given a choice in their own party despite the desire of some to dump Obama. The problem is that Obama is now so unpopular that even some of the more extreme candidates might be able beat him.

Last night, Ron Paul won the straw polling after the debate.

  1. SWM,

I see you have posted recently….Are you going to at least apologize for attacking me?

  2. AY,

I read where Jon Huntsman is moving his campaign gestures to NH where he hopes that this will help stabilize his grass roots campaign. I also saw that he is having issues keeping staff and he is on his second or third manager.

I too thought he was the brightest of what the GOP has to offer. However, it looks like Swarthmore mom is going for Perry anyways.

  3. Oh, I figured I’d be getting an apology by someone that called me a Republican, a misogynist and to be viewed with askance….I suppose not yet!

  4. And BenD,

if I were Obama..I’d play it to the media what I was planning on sending to congress and have media coverage and direct mailing about his plan..to the hard core GOP districts….and then let the voters make their decisions….

But if Obama’s record speaks for itself, even if he has control of both houses of Congress….he won’t get shit done…He had already proved that…Clinton, If I recall had the odds stacked against him….He passed some health care laws regarding children…was impeached by the house…lost his law license(s) and all that with a GOP controlled congress….

If I recall he also left the Office with one of the highest approval ratings of any president….

  5. Anonymously Yours said, “Obama may have very well given a great speech….He did that to get elected… ”

It’s a good speech but an improbable and troubling plan.

    First, the Republicans won’t pass it. They want a desparate, disgruntled electorate next year. Helping Obama put people to work helps re-elect Obama. For the next 14 months, the Republican goal is “Let’s – – – make – – – Obama – – – a – – – one – – – term – – – president.”

Second, the Republicans will take Obama’s tax break concessions as the new normal and then ask what he’s willing to concede on top of that. If they agree to tax breaks in exchange for new construction and refurbishing, the tax breaks will come first, and the new construction . . . oh, look, abortion, gays, God, guns, grits, patriotism, war . . . what were we talking about?

Third, jobs created for tax breaks last as long as the tax breaks last. As a former state employee, and as a former federal employee, I’ve seen this. A laundry that gets a 50% tax credit on an employee’s salary for a year, hires an employee for a year. Then they fire her and hire another employee for a year.

Fourth, the payroll tax is NOT income tax. It’s Social Security tax. If the government waives half of a worker’s payroll tax, Social Security is now collecting 3/4 of that worker’s Social Security tax – 1/2 from the employer, and 1/4 from the employee. A person earning $12000 a year is having $9000 worth of Social Security contributions while getting $12000 worth of Social Security credits. While complaining that SSA is going broke, let’s stimulate the economy by underfunding it !?!?!?

  6. Pete said, “as a man i can honestly say that no matter what the subject
vagina’s will probably come to mind.”

Now, every 19 seconds, we’ll also think of Galileo and Huntsman, unfortunately.

  7. I do nate, you have some great points…especially with what all has been lost…

  8. I guess not a peep for the remainder of the night….I do expect an answer though….

  9. Well, I guess you don’t have an answer SWM except to try and discredit with no rational basis for doing so….except that you disagree with someone else’s point of view…Which is pretty shallow, don’t you think?

I have yet to hear why Obama is so great except the single issue of Pro Choice….that seems shallow as well…when people are Hungry, Homeless, Unemployed, Underemployed, Lack Adequate Housing, don’t have Health Insurance. And you indicated I did not care about my fellow man or woman…I think Abortion is a good ideal if someone has a place to live….other than that its pretty much a moot point….because if they don’t have at least those basics….the state will step in and take the children away…I have seen it happen in a number of instances….In the big picture it is moot…..Don’t you agree?

If you wanna have your heart ripped out go to the family court; Stay for a Juvenile Delinquency Hearing, a Designation Hearing, a Probable cause hearing to remove children from a household….this is called a Neglect and Abuse Hearing….Take the time….it might give you a different perspective….

However, I am still waiting for an answers as to why you disagreed with me and stated that I was a republican, a misogynist and someone to be viewed with askance….. ….Just like you said, if you disagree with someone you’ll state your opinion….I am doing the same…

  10. Why no comment….SWM….I am hoping you can enlighten the rest of the blawg of how great Obama is and why he should be re-elected on the single issue of abortion….when people are hungry, homeless, unemployed, underemployed, lack proper health insurance…seems like there are more important issues that need to be addressed before a single issue of abortion….not that it is not important….it is like having oil for a vehicle and you have a major oil leak…it seem kind of futile to keep putting more oil in until you get the leak fixed….

I wonder how many people that don’t have a job, are Hungry, under employed, homeless think about the issue of abortion….I bet that is the last thing they think of….call me skeptical….I bet they would like to have a nice house to live in, reliable transportation, health insurance, money for trips etc….

Now back to my question, why did you call me a : 1) A Republican; 2) a Misogynist and 3) a person viewed with ASKANCE…..

I have an inquiring mind…..and I can be singled issued….but never simple minded….I heard the other day the average person has over 3,00 thoughts per day….You know me and can probably attest that I am anything but average…

  11. Well Blouise, enjoy the cleaning….I am a lot of things but one thing that I am mostly is a realist…But I can be a pit bull when pushed and I have been pushed….

  12. Obama may have very well given a great speech….He did that to get elected…Now what is he going to do to keep the things he swore he was against….I am not even going to go to the issues of torture….or any of the International things that are on his plate….But purely domestic issues….Right now, I figure he is all HAT…. and this dog don’t hunt….on idle promises….I defended Obama when he was first in Office….I said, give him a chance to prove his mettle…..the only thing he has proven is he can’t keep his word….Ask anyone…but if you wanna check yourself look in April 09….I think Mike S, FFLEO were all on the same page….the only one left is Mike S….

Now, SWM, I am going to ask you why did you state the following; That I was
    1) A Republican; 2) a Misogynist and 3) a person viewed (to be viewed) with ASKANCE…..

I am still waiting…BTW, I will ask you every time, I see you post…
