Is Justin Bieber a Dead-Beat Dad Or Rape Victim?

I rarely take much interest in celebrity story, but one legal stories this week caught my eye: a woman who is seeking paternity liability from Justin Bieber. What is fascinating is that it would seem likely that any paternity payment would be accompanied by a possible charge of statutory rape. The alleged 30-second tryst after the concert occurred when Bieber was just 16 in a state (California) with a statutory date of 18.

In this case, the woman is 20 years old with a three-month old child. That would seem to confirm that she was an adult having sex with a child.

Mariah Yeater says that the occasion of her impregnation was also the date Bieber lost his virginity. That later point would only seem to aggravate the claim of statutory rape. She claims to have had sex with him at the Staples Center on the night of October 25, 2010 after a show. She says that they had relations in a “private area” known more commonly as a bathroom.

This is a high-risk claim which, even if successful in forcing a DNA test, could result in his not being the father but in her being a criminal defendant.

It is interesting how these cases involving celebrities often disregard of the statutory rape implications as in the case of the Spears controversy. Yet we still see a steady stream of disturbing prosecutions, including allegations of different treatment given males versus females.

  1. “I agree with the suing for paternity.” in the above comment meant I agreed with Mike Spindell regarding the lawsuit, not that I agreed with suing Bieber.

Is Justin Bieber a Dead-Beat Dad Or Rape Victim?

    can’t it be both?”

    In a just world?

  3. Briefly:

Courts have ruled that rape of a young man by an older woman is no excuse for handing out paternity and child custody to female rapists. And so even if he was raped, a court could still give this rapist access to his millions.

Mike, most statutory rape laws I’ve seen usually have various +/- offsetting penalties clause for kids within a year or two of each other.

  4. I agree with the suing for paternity. I was talking only about the sex act. I was only saying she didn’t take advantage of him by having sex. The paternity suit is a whole other issue

  5. “taking advantage? He’s 16. He wasn’t taken advantage of. He’s a teenager, famous, and rich”

    Jeff,

I get why she did it, but then to sue for paternity evinces more than just celebrity predation.

  6. “Are you suggesting that in California he’s being taken advantage of but if he was a few hundred miles east he wouldn’t have been taken advantage of?”
Obviously. Sometimes the law is indeed “an ass”.
I don;t know anything about this Beiber (nor do I really want to) but his celebrity should not negate the issue of his youth,16, allegedly a virgin, and this older woman, took advantage of him. If he had not been a celebrity should would not have given a whit about this boy most probably, Sounds on the face of it she took advantage of his youth and his celebrity.

  7. taking advantage? He’s 16. He wasn’t taken advantage of. He’s a teenager, famous, and rich. Believe me he is getting plenty now and doesn’t see the sex as being taken advantage of. Plus it was a crime because it happened in California. If he was in another state it may have been legal. Are you suggesting that in California he’s being taken advantage of but if he was a few hundred miles east he wouldn’t have been taken advantage of?

It wasn’t like she had control over him. She was not an authority figure. She was just one of 1000’s of girls wanting a celebrity – assuming of course they even had sex.

  8. Statutory rape laws while protecting the young, can in certain instances be quite unfair. A sixteen year old having consensual sex with an eighteen year old, pick your melange of sexes, to my mind doesn’t go to the spirit of the laws purpose. In this case, however, this young woman was clearly taking advantage of a naive, if famous young man, in order to add him to her minds’ trophy case. To then charge him with a paternity suit is the height of greed. given this set of facts I think she should be prosecuted.

  9. That must of have been some conversation between girlfriends;

    Mariah-Girl I think I’m pregnant

    Friend -Really,Who”s the father?

Mariah-You know that young thing I was telling you about

Friend-What young thing you and he are about the same age, right?

Mariah -Not quite, hes a little younger than me.

    Friend -Really?.How much younger?

    Mariah-About (4) years

Friend-Four years!!!!! ,Girl are you crazy? Never mind ,dont answer that.
