Editor of American Jewish Magazine Calls For Israel’s Mossad To Kill Obama

Andrew Adler, the owner and publisher of the Atlanta Jewish Times, has apologized after running a column that lists three options for Israel to deal with its current threats that included killing Barack Obama. The column went out of its way to make sure that readers “read ‘three’ correctly” — “U.S. based Mossad agents” should kill the president. The column is just one more example of how religious writers and politicians use faith as a vehicle for hate and violent speech. Given our discussion of Santorum’s honorary campaign chairman (who denounced gays as making God want to vomit), one has to wonder about the intestinal fortitude of the Almighty during periods of sectarian extremism.

Adler listed three options for Israel to counter Iran’s nuclear weapons in his weekly newspaper last Friday. The first is to launch a pre-emptive strike against Hamas and Hezbollah. The second is to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities. Then there is the third option:

Three, give the go-ahead for U.S.-based Mossad agents to take out a president deemed unfriendly to Israel in order for the current vice president to take his place, and forcefully dictate that the United States’ policy includes its helping the Jewish state obliterate its enemies.

Yes, you read “three” correctly. Order a hit on a president in order to preserve Israel’s existence. Think about it. If I have thought of this Tom Clancy-type scenario, don’t you think that this almost unfathomable idea has been discussed in Israel’s most inner circles?

Another way of putting “three” in perspective goes something like this: How far would you go to save a nation comprised of seven million lives…Jews, Christians and Arabs alike?

You have got to believe, like I do, that all options are on the table.

A bit hard to peddle back from that. The readers of the Atlanta Jewish Times will hopefully use this disgraceful column as a vehicle to reexamine the rhetoric and extremism displayed by Adler and others in today’s political discourse. An apology for such a hateful and extremist column falls a bit short of convincing. It comes off as an “I should not have put it in print” apology.

    Look I know you hate Obama with every fiber of your being. Really though “cult leader”? Really? So because I’d vote for him I’m in a cult? That is as misdirected as me saying that just because someone doesn’t support Israel, they are anti-Jewish. There are times when your hatred goes too far into the realm of fantasy and in so doing you undermine the case you presume to make. However, him being a Communist, Kenyan, Muslim, I guess you’re just being fair in your way, absurdly so.

  4. Mike – its a shame that you have to defend your citizenship because of cranks like this guy.

    I am a Pastafarian who believes strongly in the right of Israel to live peacefully withing its borders. But in America for reasons I cannot fathom, the only acceptable positions are those of the hard right in Israel. There is a more robust & healthier debate inside Israel than in the US as to what should be done to secure peace. Sadly, their hard right & the US government have chosen a path that I believe will lead to the eventual destruction of the Jewish State at a horrific cost in human suffering to everyone involved.

    Guys like this will be given a pass but should some Jewish writer suggest that there are peaceful solutions he would be branded a self-hating Jew and not friend of Israel.

  8. This is interesting in many ways.

    1. American exceptionalism. Obama has claimed the right to kill other nations’ leaders. In fact, he has done so. Evidently this is a right only of American presidents.

    2. Differential treatment. To my knowledge, the govt. never claimed Al-Awaliki told people to kill the president. Yet he and his 16 year old son were killed by drone on the president’s order. Was this because they didn’t apologize?

    3. The best way to rally people around a cult leader is to have a fake death threat. The doubters and believers become more immeshed in the cult than ever before.

    I’m going with door number 3. Obama has several groups of supporters. He needs all of them to win his election. His supporters consist of the following people:

    a. donors from the financial and MIC who know who they’re paying for and what they’ll get for all that money.

    b. true believers. These are the people who understand that Obama tortures, is a war monger, engages in financial crimes, imprisons the innocent ,etc. and frankly, really don’t care that much about it as long as their team wins.

    c. people who are so busy working and so ill informed by the “press” that they think Obama is on the side of the people. Today in naked capitalism Yves has a write up about what will surely be a huge headline for Obama: “Obama to Use Pension Funds of Ordinary Americans to Pay for Bank Mortgage “Settlement”

    Yves writes about what is actually happening. Headlines in every major paper will read that a great victory has happened for homeowners when nothing can be further from the truth.

    It is voters in category b and c that need shoring up to make certain they come out to vote. Those are the people this story is aimed at and so far, it looks like it is effective on them.

  9. This article was an absurdity, written by a man with no secret “entre'” into the inner workings of the Netanyahu Administration. I’ve been writing here since Bibi’s ascent to power, that he is little more than a Republican Neocon operative, but as much as I dislike the man he is not stupid enough to consider a plot to assassinate an American President. This is the meanderings, of Mr. Adler and represents an extremely right wing political attitude, that were it implemented would destroy the country he purports to save.

    The Atlanta metro area has a current population of about 113,000 Jews and this weekly newspaper has a total circulation of around 6,500. If you take any population of people I think you will find that about 5% are batshit crazy. So while shocking as this writing is, it must be put into context, as the ravings of an small group of people.

    However, judging from the comments, there is more to be discussed. I am an
    American Jew and I do support the existence of Israel as a Jewish State. Nevertheless, I do not have dual loyalties since I’m American born and bred. I believe strongly in a two state solution and feel the occupied territories should be stripped of Jewish settlers as a means of finally obtaining peace. It is my belief that Netayahu has set back the course of peace and that he has done so because he is under the influence of American Neocons. There is a drive on among the Neocon Corporatists to go to war with Iran, that I believe is fueled by money/oil.

    My Mid-East view is rather unique, in that I don’t know of many who have even postulated it. I believe that America’s BFF in the ME is not Israel, but Saudi Arabia. I believe that this can be shown historically and that while administration after administration has espoused friendship towards Israel, in truth the US has played that role to control the Israeli’s and actually to see that the ME hostilities continue indefinitely. This is primarily because the Saudi’s need an ME bogeyman, to keep their and the Arab people from focusing to closely on their regimes despotism.

    I believe that Israel does not need either US aid or guidance to survive and should cut this chain that binds them. Israel must of course vote out Bibi first and lately that seems a large possibility. Like in all the world, the real ME situation is not as it seems to common folk such as ourselves, we must look beyond all the copious propaganda.

    Yeah, good times. Apparently not only is it OK if you are a Republican it is more OK if you are a Jewish Republican.

    The right wing zionist establishment, their AIPAC front group, and the Congressional lapdogs fixated on the idea that Obama is “unfriendly” to Israel. Powerful political leverage, that. Nevermind that it’s not true as measured by the record of Obama caving to Bibi right along.

    So, in the spirit that it’s ok to use obscene and radical leverage when attacking from the right, this little bit of discourse understandably just slipped out.

    Thanks again, MSM, for helping to establish a cowardly brand of journalism that virtually insulates right wing fanatics, which most so-called r.w. establishment types are, especially where Israel is concerned, from criticism.

    What Goldwater said in 1964, I believe, is now the accepted norm: “extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice” I think even he would be surprised at how twisted, upside down, and out of control this have become.

  20. I would hope that readers of the Atlanta Jewish Times would use this disgraceful column as a vehicle to reexamine their desire to continue their subscriptions. Put this man out of business.
