I previously criticized Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi for suggesting that she has dirt on Newt Gingrich but would disclose it later. She has returned to that ignoble theme in an interview with CNN, saying that Gingrich will not be elected because “There is something I know.” I have been a vocal critic of Gingrich on this blog, but once again I view this low-grade form of politicking to be grossly unfair to Gingrich and a further degrading of our political system. If you want to attack Gingrich, then do it. Do not constantly suggest that you have severed heads in a duffel bag or some other evidence against the man.
Here is the exchange:
John King, CNN: “You make your case there passionately for President Obama. But also understand that this is a tough reelection climate for any president, Democrat or Republican in this economy. Because of your history with Speaker Gingrich, what goes through your mind when you think of the possibility, which is more real today than it was a week or a month ago, that he would be the Republican nominee and that you could come back here next January or next February with a President Gingrich?”
Rep. Nancy Pelosi: “Let me just say this. That will never happen.”
King: “Why?”
Pelosi: “He’s not going to be President of the United States. That’s not going to happen. Let me just make my prediction and stand by it, it isn’t going to happen.”
King: “Why are you so sure?”
Pelosi: “There is something I know. The Republicans, if they choose to nominate him that’s their prerogative. I don’t even think that’s going to happen.”
Once again, it should be Democrats who denounce this type of politics. It should not fall to either Gingrich or Republicans. What is really astonishing is that I would think that the Democrats would be dying to have Gingrich nominated and offering Obama a target-rich environment. Regardless of the political wisdom, it is wrong to constantly claim to have dirt on a politician . . . while promising to reveal it later.
Update: As on the earlier occasion, Pelosi has sent out aides to say that she was merely referring to things in the public record. After the prior incident, I was contacted by Pelosi aides who wanted to make the same point. Yet, here again, Pelosi comes forth and makes the same type sinister suggestion. She is not a stupid person and she knows how such comments will be interpreted — particularly after being criticized on the earlier occasion. This is precisely why Congress is now as unpopular as ebola.

Newt Gingrich is one of the most despicable, dirty, unethical politicians ever to walk the earth. He has used all kinds of dirty tricks and underhanded methods against his opponents for years. But then, he’s a Republican. So that’s to be expected. Apparently Dr. Turley thinks Democrats shouldn’t behave that way.
Well, that would make the Democrats all nice and ethical, but it’s the equivalent of fighting a knife fight when the other guy has a gun and we have one hand tied behind our back.
I for one am happy to see that Mrs. Pelosi can give it at least as well as the GOP, which attacks her relentlessly at every turn.
My advice to liberals: stop being such wimps. Competing with the vicious bunch of thugs that is the GOP is a contact sport, and we shouldn’t be shying away from smacking them around with the kind of tactics they use on us.
Now, Professor, why don’t you go back to criticizing the President, so you can help elect someone who’s even worse on the issues you care about?
Foot, meet bullet.
I know…..but I won’t tell you.
SwM,
Excellent analysis in this article:

Pelosi has timed her insertion perfectly as she is always the “draw the fire” from the President designee.
Lrobby99,
Never said that Gingrick was electable….is that really what you fear the most? I’d check my motives……..
She does not claim secret evidence. She claims to know why Gingrick is unelectable. Knowing Gingrick, she could quite possible be right. Get over it.
She is the founder of the Biden Breast Health Initiative non-profit organization, co-founded the Book Buddies program, and is active in Delaware Boots on the Ground.her community.
raff,
I was making reference to an NPR edition that I had heard sometime back….But maybe this will assist…

1. political system is already degraded.
2. banks can break the law with Obama’s Admin/DOJ Holder support – they’ll let the statute of limitations for various types of fraud run out (about 10 years, both Obama’s terms if he gets re-elected)
3. all is fair in war and this is a war of the 1% against the rest of us. I’m sure Gingrich could care less about your concern that Pelosi be fair, but hey, if it makes YOU feel better…
rafflaw, I thought Jill Biden was an educator.
Unfortunately politics is a combat sport. When the stakes are so high, those that play the game, play to win or they lose. I’ve opined many times here that in politics it is rarely about principle, or a given “Ism”, but naked lust for power.
She’s playing the game by perhaps sending a message to Newt and Republicans that is well known to Washington insiders, but not the public. By describing things as they are, I’m far from defending them, merely noting the parameters of the “game”. The fact that peoples lives are tragically affected by the playing of the “game” is what is so infuriating about it all. JT and most of us here want our politics and governance to be something far more noble, than merely a battle of egos. However, sadly ego and aggression seem to typify human behavior.
AY,
What benefit does Mrs. Biden get from the Health care act?
How do you say politely….Nancy….”SHIT or get off of the POT”….
I think prying eyes could find lots of political dirt on her and her husband….as I understand it…he is quite the beneficiary of the money brought home to California……
It’s be like Biden stepping up to further endorse the Obama Healthcare as passed….Does not his wife have some benefit from Healthcare Act?
Just saying…..
I’ve got a secret!
Maybe ‘what she knows’ is not about Gingrich but about the GOP in Congress and what they will do to prevent it. It is well known that they don’t want him as the nominee. Some have already started working against him publicly.
Is it legal to withhold information of illegal activity?
Actually,
I think most Democrats would prefer to have Gingrich as the Republican candidate. If he is unelectable, it isn’t because of dirt Pelosi might have on him. It will the crap he spews in every debate and every interview. He has shown himself to be headed down the Pat Buchanan road.
Nancy should be careful. I can’t believe Newt doesn’t have dirt on a lot of other pols. It’s not like we have an abundance
statesmen or women serving. Greed seems to be the main motivating factor and we all known that’s something he knows well.
I think she’s waiting and hoping the Republicans will nominate him. THEN if she looses her bomb and it’s really bad, it will help the Democrat get elected. Why in the world else would you not just spill it?
How is it wrong?
I have a comment on this issue.
