Fun With Nanos . . . Or First Generation Hunter-Killer Robots?

The mad scientists at the GRASP Lab, University of Pennsylvania have developed this swarm of nano quadrotors that can perform remarkable flight operations.

Anyone who saw The Terminator series knows that this is how it all began in the development of Hunter-Killer unmanned aircraft. Here are those cute GRASP nanos in a few years . . .

  1. That is the coolest thing I have ever seen. However when they fly in formation in ranks it is scary. Hats off to you Professor, this time!

    Dredd,

Hopefully journalists will use them to assist in legitimate reporting,
as opposed to spying and controlling.

My guess is that citizen journalists will be more forthright with technology than Big Brother’s main stream media has been and will be.

    Police forces will love these.
Put cameras on the bottom and
they’ll be able to spy on anyone.

    So will citizen journalists.

    Professor Turley,

Actually the first attack machines are very old (Picture).

They are much older than the organic realm which includes the human species.

They cause anything from Mad Cow disease to herpes. They are called prions and phages (ibid).

  5. I Remember Years ago, a Terrible Movie starring Gene Simmons as a Mad Scientist with Cyber Bugs… This is Them!

  6. BN,

That word you are using, “toy”. I do not think it means what you think it means . . .

This is a video called “Precise Aggressive Maneuvers for Autonomous Quadrotor Flight”.

Function follows form. Ask yourself, “What is this being designed for?”

I think it’s pretty clear that these are most certainly not toys.

  7. Just another tool to use in order to “keep the populace in line”. My “laughter” goes way beyond “nervous”. This scares the hell out of me.

  9. Good work.

    Put it to good use.

Rescue, fire fighting, cleaning up weather disasters, looking for victims of earthquakes, etc.

Don’t let the warmongers get hold of them.
