The Crystal Springs Time Machine

Well, Albert Einstein and H.G. Wells couldn’t do it but Pastor Dr. Stan Weatherford of the First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs, Mississippi could. Weatherford informed Charles and Te’Andrea Wilson that members of his congregation wouldn’t allow them to be married in the church and thus catapulted them back in time to Mississippi circa 1962. Seems the Wilsons violated a cardinal sin of this church — they are African-Americans. On the day before the wedding, the Wilsons were told that “The church congregation had decided no black could be married at that church, and that if he went on to marry her, then they would vote [Weatherford] out the church.”

The Wilsons regularly attend the church but are not registered as members. They had scheduled the service weeks before and no objection had been raised at that time. Weatherford heard from what he termed a ” small minority” who complained that, “This had never been done before here, so it was setting a new precedent.” Weatherford picked up what was left of his manhood and proceeded to perform the service at a nearby church. “I didn’t want to have a controversy within the church, and I didn’t want a controversy to affect the wedding of Charles and Te’ Andrea. I wanted to make sure their wedding day was a special day,” he said.

The day was special, but the controversy in the church has just begun.

For his part Charles Wilson is forgiving but disappointed. “I blame those members who knew and call themselves Christians and didn’t stand up,” Wilson said.

Amen, Brother Wilson. Amen.

  1. Black Couple is denied marriage at a predominately white church. I guess the church they are attending are Satanist racists. Yes, stanatists, because only very evil people would deny marrying a couple just because of their race. Beware when the devil attacks our church congregations he enjoys it very much. I am so sad church members let themselves be controlled by the devil.

  2. Research the national standings; look at the correlation between the educational scores of Mississippi and this kind of backward thinking. The Wilsons appear to be the only people in this article who have a heart, soul and intellect.

  3. My son (who is a-religious) got some kind of a certificate that enables him to perform marriages in his state, so long as the individuals who are getting married have gotten their marriage license and done the civil thing in the civil courts first. He can do two marriages per year. I find that hilarious because it’s an authority granted to him by the STATE and he doesn’t have to claim to be a minister or a church to get it!

  4. Got married at a Nazarene church, even though wasn’t Nazarene. Was what former mother-in-law wanted. Pastor made us go through all the processes.

  5. So the good pastor valued his job over his moral and ethical responsibility. Nice.

    By doing so:

    a) he essentially disqualified himself from his position

    b) what does he want that job for if that is the nature of his congregation and they were unwavering, unless he is sympathetic to their beliefs?

    Bum.

  6. Apparently, “Thou Shalt Not Be A Brainless Bigot” was lost when Moses, as played by Mel Brooks, dropped the third tablet containing the 11th through 15th Commandments.

  7. Who is in charge here? Maybe they should move to Florida so they will get more respect!

  8. OK, Charles and Te’Andrea have a right to worship anywhere they like, but this story really makes me wonder why they feel so comfortable among a bunch of people like the Congregation who have a “small minority” who are unashamed of being so sinful as to try to deny a sacrament of their church to two of god’s children, right in his HOUSE! Any kid of MINE who acted that way towards one or two of his siblings would find himself out in the backyard in a tent in pretty short order!

  9. Thus far the “small minority” have remained nameless. Name these upstanding church members, Dr. Weatherford, so that we can honestly determine the strength and numbers of the supposed minority within your congregation.

  10. Let’s hope there are some real Christians in that church who will instigate a dialog with the cowardly pretenders. It’s too bad the pastor didn’t stand up to the bigots, tactfully, but assertively, and have the wedding where it was planned. The bigots won the battle, let’s hope they lose the war.

  11. There are too many letter “s” in the word Mississippi. When the pronounce it within the borders of that state they dont pronounce them at all. It is Mizzippi. On Sunday in that particular church they pray to the Lard. Cook with it too.

  12. “Can’t be! I mean I keep hearing from the geniuses that drive our national conversation on TV & in newspapers that we live in a post-racial America.”

    Frankly,

Our national pundit class, leading their insulated upper middle-class lives dragged kicking and yelling into an America that at least acknowledged the principle that all citizens are equal. However, in the years since the Civil Rights Act a good portion of the citizenry has remained unreconstructed in their bigotry as this blog well shows. Black people can attend services, put money in the plate, but when it comes to actually being members, or allowed the Churches services, a different attitude arises.

  13. Mark,
Maybe Jim is a member of this so-called Chritian church! What idiots!
Good article to get my dander up!

  14. Time changes some things but somethings are incapable of change….. Better they still consider the dixiecrat the progressive party……

  15. ” except when those bleeding hearts allow the coloreds cut in line ahead of a white guy.”

And what line would that be?

  16. Can’t be! I mean I keep hearing from the geniuses that drive our national conversation on TV & in newspapers that we live in a post-racial America. There is no more racism in our country they assure me over and over – except when those bleeding hearts allow the coloreds cut in line ahead of a white guy.
