License To Kill

-Submitted by David Drumm (Nal), Guest Blogger

Floyd Lee Corkins II, 28, of Virginia shot and wounded Leo Johnson at the Family Research Council’s (FRC) Washington D.C. headquarters. Johnson prevented additional violence when he disarmed Corkins. Corkins’ backpack contained ammunition and 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches. Johnson is doing well and there is no word on the fate of the sandwiches.

FRC president Tony Perkins said that Corkins was “was given a license” by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) which has labeled the FRC a “hate group.” The SPLC responded that Perkins’ claim is outrageous and that Perkins has said that pedophilia is “a homosexual problem” and that an FRC official said he wanted to criminalize homosexuality and “export homosexuals from the United States.”

Using Perkins’ logic, the FRC has given a “license” to those who do violence against LGBT individuals.

Perkins’ comments are a pathetic attempt to stifle criticism of the organization he heads. Perkins provides no evidence that Corkins has even heard of the SPLC or was aware of the “hate group” label. Perkins’ comments have provided the SPLC with more media coverage that it has received in years. Internet articles have provided links to SPLC’s justification for FRC’s “hate group” label allowing readers to make up their own minds.

Playing the victim card in response to SPLC’s “hate group” evidence makes Perkins come off as whiny.

Perkins also said that the SPLC:

labeled us a hate group because we defend the family and we stand for traditional, orthodox Christianity.

This is an example of the Straw Man fallacy, where the SPLC’s actual position is substituted with a fictitious version. The argument then proceeds against the fictitious position.

Perkins’ decision to draw additional media attention to SPLC’s “hate group” label is baffling. Perkins’ fallacious argument is indicative of a weak position that cannot deal with even a modicum of criticism.

The FRC is on the losing side of history regarding same-sex marriage. As philosopher Michael LaBossiere points out, “mixed-race and same-sex marriages seem morally analogous.” At another time in our past, the FRC would have made the same arguments in opposition to mixed-race marriage.

  1. BTW, I forgot my explanation of the sandwiches.

He had planned a Stockholm syndrome style hold out. Wonder who he thought would fall in love with him during that time?

PS I feel nauseated when I see the a**kissing by these interviewers. But if they have 58% of the Republicans and
the Koch brothers behind them, then that is a very good reason to slick nicely.

  2. I don’t know who did the song but Williams Burroughs, in Naked Lunch, wrote: “Send lawyers, guns and money. The shit has hit the fan,”

  3. Send Lawyers Guns & Money, Lord, Get me out of this!
da na duna nut nut nunna , nun de nn dun done.

Ok gang. Who wrote and sang Lawyers guns and Money?

It sometimes takes items of personal protection to prevent violent nutcases. All dogs need rifles. The right to arm bears should not be infringed.

  4. Good job David. Mr. Perkins and his FRC are hate mongers, pure and simple.
Frankly put it correctly when he stated that FRC’s role is to keep the base scared of something.

  5. What movie was it, or source that was not a movie (if it was not in fact a movie) that had a hilarious exchange wherein somebody started to object vociferously because some people had been demonstrating against hate and by doing that had generated a situation where they encouraged folks to “hate the haters” and that wasn’t fair?

If you hang around long enough and there are enough guns in circulation, you will eventually get a good shooting headline for every insane idea known to man and a few known only to poultry.

But tell me the purpose of the 15 chick-fil-A sandwiches again? I didn’t get that. (Now wait a minute: the anti-anti-gay guy bought the 15 chick-fil-A sandwiches and took them with him when he went to shoot the FRC “kill the gays” guy, is that correct?)

    Here are my questions:

    Are the sandwiches in evidence?
What kind of sandwiches are they?
How’s a girl supposed to keep all of this straight in her mind?
Why the Hell did they name the fast food place a name that not only means nothing but in addition is hard to type?

  6. One thing extremist meme complexes like these FRC (pronounced “farce”) folks do is make it easier to hypothesize why, in the U.S. at least, The Skulls They Are A Changin’.

Remember that behavior impacts genetic “on off switches”, and 98% of human genetic material is microbial.

And don’t forget that microbes help shape the brain.

  7. Why Not Call the Family Research Council a Hate Group?

Unfortunately for Perkins, it’s pretty clear that a fair portion of FRC’s business is hate.

Opposition to gay marriage is anti-gay, but it does not have to be rooted in hate. But FRC is not simply an anti-gay marriage group. As the Law Center has documented, FRC has a broad and inflammatory anti-gay agenda. FRC contends that gays are dangerous, which its scholars argue justifies criminalizing homosexual behavior and barring gays from various professions, like teaching.

For example, see this 1999 paper co-authored by Robert Knight, who at the time served as FRC’s Director of Cultural Affairs. In it, he alleges the existence of a gay conspiracy to promote pedophilia. It begins:

Although most homosexual activists publicly deny that they want access to boys, many homosexual groups around the world are working aggressively to lower the age of sexual consent. Their cause is being aided by the professional psychiatric and psychological associations, which have moved in recent years toward normalizing pedophilia, much as they did with homosexuality in the early 1970s.

    Later, it contends:

In the United States, homosexual activists are more circumspect about their efforts to gain access to children than they are in Canada or Europe. While NAMBLA has regularly marched in homosexual pride parades in New York, San Francisco and other major cities, homosexual activists publicly disassociate themselves from pedophiles as part of a public relations strategy.

FRC senior fellow Peter Sprigg said on MSNBC in 2009 that homosexual behavior should be a crime. A 2010 FRC pamphlet says the claim that gay men are not especially likely to molest children is a “myth” used to “support the notion that homosexuals should be allowed to work with children as schoolteachers.”

If we’re going to talk about language that might incite people to violence, how about claims that gays are dangerous, diseased, possibly mentally ill people intent on hurting children?

Perkins defends such arguments by asserting that his organization is merely contributing to public policy discussions. Except that much of what it contributes to the discussions is hate.

  8. OS,

What happens…… We eventually call them Senator, Representative and/or President…..

    Nothing more need be said…..

  9. Perkins’ Fascist Research Council has nothing to do with morality or families; it has everything to do with shearing the flock and keeping the ignorant voting Republican against their own best interests.

The best way to do that is to keep the ignorant scared, scared of queers, scared of the coloreds, scared of Muslims, scared of everything Perkins and his ilk point them at. In order to keep that fear level high they need to constantly claim to be under attack to contently be under threat.

Whatever set this shooter off it plays into Perkins scheme and Tony played it perfectly. The ignorant have no clue what SPLC is but know it supports things that scare them therefore whatever Tony says is true about them.

  10. I’m sick of it…… Perhaps a Nucleat war would be a justifiable solution…. Clean the Planet of the scourge of humanity. Give the Earth a chance to bring forth a far smarter species than ourselves…. We call ourselves the most intelligent species…… When will we become smart enough to demonstrate that intelligence?

  11. What happens if you cross crazy with habitual liars? An episode like this one. Two different kinds of nutcases going after each other, and then Nutcase #1 tries to spin it to place the blame on a third party.

Kind of like when Rand Paul blamed Obama for a plant closing… 2008. Except Paul did not even have the cover of somebody with a firearm.

  12. Logical fallacy, meet propaganda. Propaganda, meet logical fallacy. Silly bigot! Everyone knows a license to kill comes from M when you get your double naught spy status. Now what was that the Bible said about sowing?
