OMG B4NNNNN: Woman Falls Off Cliff in Alaska While Texting

Maria Pestrikoff has given the world another danger associated with texting. Pestrikoff was texting while walking toward a cliff to toss away a cigarette. While still texting, she slipped on the grass and went over the 60-foot cliff — causing a difficult rescue in Kodiak, Alaska.

Rescuers fought to get to her before the tide came in. They reached her when the tide was only ten feet away from carrying her out.

She is now recovering. When an accident like this is caused by negligence, should the person be required to pay for the part of the rescue? I have long taken the view that such services should not be charged to citizens, even in cases of negligence. However, there is a growing trend in charging citizens for rescues. What do you think?

  1. Malisha-

    “Animal Crackers” 1930- Paramount Pictures

Captain Spaulding (Groucho Marx) referring to The Professor (Harpo Marx), who has just entered the room:

“The gates swung open and a fig newton entered.”

She didn’t fall off the cliff on purpose. If you go mountain climbing when you know a snowstorm might be pending, you should have to pay.

  3. nick,

Yep, he’s height and weight challenged. I’ve know Dennis since he was Mayor of Cleveland. He’s always been “out there” and willing to take the political hit for his principles.
His district was redistricted out from under him but he was spending so much time doing other things that he’d lost much of his home support anyway. Kaptur ( longest-serving woman in the U.S. House of Representatives) beat him easily in the primary.

The redistricting was based on population losses as the state lost 2 congressional districts overall.

Kaptur is now running against Republican Samuel “Joe the Plumber” Wurzelbacher … kid you not … Joe the Plummer.

  4. Oh, if it’s a ‘legitimate’ rescue then there shouldn’t be a charge? Sounds to me like some folks are channeling Todd Aiken.

  5. Blouise, You’re correct about Kucinich. He brought to the forefront the space alien problems confronting the nation and world. I saw him in Roswell last year @ a vegan restaurant trying to pick up a waitress. He’s more tiny than Rahm or Bloomberg.

  6. mespo- we have a dumb a55 driver penalty in Az. If a driver is stupid enough to enter a flooded wash despite warning signs during a rain- and has to be rescued- they must pay the cost of that rescue.

I forgot what the real name of this law might be…..but any dumb a55 who drives into a flash flood will pay..

  7. Henman, “Who would have been third in line if the impeachments succeeded?”

They’d deal first with Cheney, install a new VP, then go for Bush. Just like they did with Nixon. They didn’t want to see Agnew as pres, and like most of them, there is “stuff” on them, or that can be made up, that can be brought out when needed.

  8. I know Mike Castle of Delaware was one of the republicans and Christine O’Donnell took care of him in the primary.

  9. I’m not sure if HenMan was referring to Resolution 333 or not. Dennis introduced several that all eventually ended up in Judiciary where they expired. Hopefully HenMan’s memory will serve and we’ll be able to find out the names and numbers.

  10. It would have been the Speaker of the House, HenMan.

Succession runs VP, Speaker of the House, President pro tempore of the Senate, Secretary of State, Treasury, Defense, USAG, Interior, Agriculture, Commerce, etc.

  11. Malisha-

I don’t know what the vote was. I have to leave for awhile- maybe I’ll see if I can find it later on C-SPAN, Wikipedia, or House of Rep. website. If you find it, I would love to know what the vote was on both of the miscreants! Too bad they failed. Who would have been third in line if the impeachments succeeded?

  12. HenMan — wait, ” Of course it was voted down, but he did get a few Republican votes.”

Do you know which Republican votes he got?
