Gun Appreciation Day across the country was marked by various gun shot wounds. At the Dixie Gun and Knife Show in Raleigh, North Carolina, the owner of a 12-gauge shotgun was asked to remove his gun from its case at a security check point and accidentally discharged the weapon — wounding three people.
I am a bit curious about what a security check point is looking for at a gun show when people are allowed to bring in guns.
At another gun show in Medina, Ohio, a gun dealer was attempting to unload a 9 mm semi-automatic Taurus pistol that he had purchased when it went off and hit his 62-year-old partner in the arm and groin.
Then in Indianapolis at the Indy 1500 Gun and Knife Show gun show, a man shot himself in the hand. Emory L. Cozee, 54, was reportedly walking back to his car while loading his .45 caliber semi-automatic when he accidentally shot himself in the hand. Not the brightest move I suspect.
At this rate, the gun control advocates may prevail by simple attrition.
Bob Kauten:
when you are out on the farm shooting CRT’s, old propane tanks, empty O2 tanks and other targets of opportunity like pumpkins, it is a real pain in the neck to have to reload after 7 shots. It just sucks the fun right out of shooting.
And if you have a fully automatic weapon? Oh hell no to 7 round clips. 50 round magazines is the minimum.
Liberals just want to suck the fun out of everything except sex. Cant drink, smoke, shoot, eat red meat, but at least we can . . .
guns should only be handled by trained experienced professionals

John,
I didn’t want my kids anywhere near guns or people who had guns. When they are old enough to make more adult type decisions, then maybe you can train them to handle guns. Just not at my house.
I was at a gun shop today and also at a gun range here in Virginia. Both were doing what they described as “whirlwind business.” They were packed. There was little or no ammunition for sale and handguns were leaping from the display cases. Fear is great motivator and were I the gun manufacturers (i.e. the NRA), I’d submit a proposal for gun control every quarter and right before the annual meeting.
Ah communication … ever hear the one about the drill sergeant responding to a young recruit at boot camp who called his rifle a “gun”?
The old sergeant glared deep into the soldier’s eyes.
The sergeant then ordered him to “march down the road a mile chanting ‘this is my rifle’, as you hold your rifle high, then grasp your unit between your legs and chant ‘this is my gun, one is for fighting and one is for fun’, then march back here and get in line” …
Jude,
All right, ban semi-automatic weapons with large ammunition capacities. Is that better? Don’t divert the conversation that we need to have, by arguing about definitions. This is a frequent tactic of the NRA.
Large-ammunition-capacity guns create more slaughter per incident. There is no civilian purpose for such weapons, other than bolstering the pathetic ego of the owner. Civilians who think they need one are delusional, and probably shouldn’t be allowed to own one.
Do you fear a raid on your home, by multiple armed attackers? The only folks with a reason to fear that, are folks engaged in large, undeclared, cash transactions.
Everyone knows what we mean by “assault weapons.”
“Lots of ammo, lots of bang-bang, lots of death, as fast as you can pull the trigger.”
Please don’t insult our intelligence by feigning ignorance.
EastBroadwayLong Beach: “And we must limit the use of ASSAULT weapons….. they are not necessary for hunting…. they are only meant for killing other humans.”
Tell me what this would do, since “assault weapons” are used in less than 3% of violent crimes, and there is literally no difference, other than cosmetic, typically, between them and any other weapon of a similar type. A semi-automatic rifle is just as deadly as one that uneducated people would label “an assault rifle”.
rafflaw 1, John,
I have a crazy idea. don’t let kids touch any guns. Loaded or unloaded. We prevent them from driving a car until they are 16 (in Illinois), why not require that kids under 16 can’t shoot or own a gun.
Ok the FIRST thing I taught the kids, was how to go up and down stairs as soon as they could crawl.
WHY? Because there could be a time when you aren’t around, and I wanted to mitigate the risk of them getting hurt.
When they were older, I started my motorcycle up until pipes were just warm, and then called the kids over. The wife got upset, until I asked if she rather they find out which pieces are hot after a 100 mile run.
When they got bigger I told the wife to start giving them drinks in some old glasses…she said they will break them…I replied of course they will…BUT WE will control what, when, and how they are broken…and what they should do when they DO break them.
The point? YOU CAN NOT CONTROL LIFE.
You can only try to control as much as you can to try to keep the kids as safe as you can.
Do I want the kids over someone’s place finding out about guns…the hard way?
That’s why we have some of the tragedies we do…
Darwin Awards all around….

Albuquerque Shooting: Teenager Kills 5 People, Including 3 Children

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A 15-year-old boy remained in custody Sunday night as detectives tried to piece together what led to the shooting of his parents and three of their children who were found dead in a New Mexico home.
The teenager was arrested on murder and other charges in connection with the shootings, which happened Saturday night at the home in a rural area southwest of downtown Albuquerque, said Lt. Sid Covington, a Bernalillo County sheriff’s spokesman.
Authorities identified the victims late Sunday as Greg Griego, 51, his wife Sara Griego, 40, and three of their children: a 9-year-old boy, Zephania Griego, and daughters Jael Griego, 5, and Angelina Griego, 2.
Word of the shootings traveled quickly through the law enforcement community, and officials began offering their condolences for Greg Griego, a spiritual leader known for his work with firefighters and the 13 years he spent as a volunteer chaplain at the county jail.
“Chaplin Griego was a dedicated professional that passionately served his fellow man and the firefighters of this community,” Fire Chief James Breen said in a statement. “His calming spirit and gentle nature will be greatly missed.”
Jail Chief Ramon Rustin said Griego was instrumental in the creation of the Metropolitan Detention Center’s chaplain program and worked to get inmates integrated back into the community.
Griego also was a former member of the pastoral staff at Calvary, a Christian church in Albuquerque. As part of his work there, he oversaw the Straight Street program for jail inmates.
Authorities said each victim suffered more than one gunshot wound, and several guns were found at the home, one of which was a semi-automatic military-style rifle. Investigators were trying to determine who owned the guns.
Otteray.

Ain’t that the truth?!!!!! The security guard hired by the charter school in Michigan who left his gun unattended in a student bathroom was a retired police weapons instructor!
Teenager Accidentally Kills Brother While Playing With Mother’s Gun

Excerpt;
A 14-year-old in Henry County, Georgia unintentionally shot and killed his 15-year-old brother early Saturday morning while playing with his mother’s gun, according to police. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that charges may be brought against the teenager and his mother, who have not yet been named. Though the mother left the handgun unloaded, the brothers were apparently still able to use it:
The brothers, along with a friend who was spending the night, had gotten the mother’s handgun, “which at the time had been unloaded,” [Police Sargent] Smith said.
“During the course of the evening and early morning hours, one of the boys had evidently loaded the weapon, Smith said. “The 14-year-old at some point pointed the weapon at his brother and pulled the trigger, which resulted in the 15-year-old being struck in the chest area.”
Rafflaw: Guns dont have peddles.
One would think that there would be more guns misfirings. None dare call them an “accident”. An accident is waiting to happen. Single shot weapons are the way to go for single thought people.
When hunting dogs get together they yak about the humans who are bad shots.
This is a laughable offense…. and a further demonstration that we really do need new laws limiting many types of firearms in this country. I’m not saying banning guns is the answer, but I am saying that laws mandating propper training in all forms of firearms handling, including not leaving live ammunition in the gun when it’s not necessary. And we must limit the use of ASSAULT weapons….. they are not necessary for hunting…. they are only meant for killing other humans. We have systems for obtaining a drivers license….. why not for other ‘killing’ machines?
John,
I have a crazy idea. don’t let kids touch any guns. Loaded or unloaded. We prevent them from driving a car until they are 16 (in Illinois), why not require that kids under 16 can’t shoot or own a gun.
One of the reasons I don’t own a gun is that it is among the available appliances that can have lethal effects if mishandled. True a barbeque can explode, but the simplicity of safe operation is such that one would have to be extremely careless for it to happen. Like John’s story above the friend in question had o doubt done this procedure many times and it seems not careless about it. Yet rote procedures become procedures that are done almost mechanically without conscious attention. On rare occasions that inattention can kill you. Although I’ve developed rote procedures for driving. I always use a turn signal even when there are no cars around for instance, I am constantly making the effort to pay close attention to what I am doing because with an auto, like a gun, the lapses of attention can cause tragedy.
The FIRST thing I taught the kids…you NEVER ASK if a gun is loaded, you ALWAYS assume that it is loaded…ALL THE TIME!
Then i tell them the story of a friend at work, got back with a pump 12 gauge from hunting…pumped the rounds out, cleaned the gun…and then because he “KNEW” the gun was empty….cycled the pump & pulled the trigger.
What he DIDN’T know was that a last round had got stuck when he cycled the ammo out of the gun, and when he cycled the pump again, it loaded it.
He blew a hole in his wall 5ft from his wife, and had shot in the roof of a car sitting in the drive.
And then there is this gun story out of Michigan:
Security guard leaves gun unattended in restroom at Lapeer charter school

Excerpt:
Lapeer, MI — A security officer at a Lapeer charter school left a firearm unattended in a school bathroom on Monday, Jan. 14, a school official said.
The security officer “made a breach in security protocol” and left an unloaded weapon in a restroom “for a few moments,” said Chatfield School Director Matt Young.
Young said the school has been in contact with local authorities about the matter and wouldn’t discuss any possible repercussion for the officer, calling it “a personnel matter.” Young also declined to name the security officer.
“The school has put additional security procedures in place that follow local law enforcement practices and guidelines,” Young said in a statement. “At no time was any student involved in this breach of protocol. We will continue to work on improving school security.”
Young stressed that no children were exposed to the handgun or put in danger, and declined to comment more on specifics of the incident.
“Few things are more dangerous than articulate superficiality. Glib demagogues have been the curse of the 20th century and tens of millions of human beings have paid with their lives for the heady visions and clever talk of political egotists. Yet the danger is not that a particular child will follow in the footsteps of Lenin, Hitler or Mao. The danger is that great numbers of people will never know what it is to know, as distinguished from sounding off.”

The security checkpoints are supposed to make sure all firearms brought into the gun show are unloaded and the chamber cleared. It appears the folks described above were not the brightest bulbs on the Christmas tree. As I said in another thread a little while ago, you can’t fix stupid.
