HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. This is my favorite holiday with all of the essential elements of joy: food, friends, and football. As a Bears fan, I get to watch the Packers and the Lions compete today and I am guaranteed to leave a winner.
We are also celebrating Chanukah with my wife’s family — a twofer for the day!

Of course, we begin with our own game. We are starting the day with the 47th annual Turley Turkey bowl. As always, it is the Bears against the Redskins. I am the coach of the Bears and John Rice is the coach of the Redskins. While the Bears have a long unbroken record (at least here in McLean), Rice is an ever-creative coach and Redskins are expected to be a fierce team this year. However, our Bears team remains injury free and will be ramped up with donuts and hot chocolate. In honor of Trestman, we will be trying out our new West Coast offense style.

I am also making our traditional two Turkeys — one in the oven and one smoked on the grill. Both will have an apple-sausage-cornbread stuffing and Waldorf salad. We will have 16 and three dogs over for the dinner.

Now it is off to the gridiron and the annual appearance of the McLean Monsters of the Midway. I will update on the game for those of you who cannot see us on cable.

Until then, Happy Thanksgiving to one and all.

UPDATE: The Monsters of the McLean Midway triumphed again in a spirited game. The final score was Bears 21, Redskins 14. The last play was particularly exciting with an intersection, a recovered fumble, and Redskins touchdown with just 30 seconds remaining on the clock!

  1. Happy Thanksgiving, all! I am thankful for the brilliant reggies here and their tireless work, especially on weekends. In this brave new era where we all have to be our own Walter Cronkites now, this place rings loudly with actual liberty and justice.

    May you all find peace!

  2. Happy Thanksgiving to all and I echo mespo’s words.

Having prepared the stuffing (an old recipe handed down through the family from my great grandmother), sweet potatoes, gelatin salad, cranberry relish, and Elaine’s almond cake, I am now free to sit back and watch the younger generation pull the meal together. With 16 people coming to join the 5 of us already here, I am very grateful for my matriarch standing which brings with it guilt-free guest status.

Now … on to Thanksgiving Torts.

  3. HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!!Im happy for all the people ive met on and offline im Thankful for everyday that i wake up and im especially Thankful for my family…

  4. Happy Thanksgiving!

In addition to what mespo said, I’m thankful for my family, my friends (here and elsewhere), my health, my cats, good art (of all sorts), all the stuff Frank listed and (of course) Rachel Weisz.

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday.

  5. In recent years my family discovered that we are relatives of the John Robinson Family, the Pastor of the Pilgrims for the period they lived in Holland, after escaping religious persecution from England. He stayed in Holland with the older folks, as William Brewster and the younger stronger folks make the historic trip to New England, under the Mayflower Compact. It is other Historians and genealogists who tell us of our relation to John Robinson. Our first verified knowledge is of William Robinson, our 9x grandfather in the Boston area born approximately 1640, with the location of his birth unknown. We think out 10x grandfather might of been the son of John Robinson’s brother. We don’t know who William’s father is, but we do have verified evidence of a direct male line, since then, to me and my 3 brothers with relatives fighting in the Revolution, being organizers of the infamous Green Mountain Boys from the Bennington Vermont area. Capt. Samuel Robinson 8X grandfather is considered by most to be the father of Vermont and one of his sons Moses, the 2nd governor of Vermont. Capt. Samuel Robinson sadly died in England while proving ownership of the Vermont land grants that the than “York” Governor and his thugs were trying to literally steal. They captured and placed both Capt. Samuel and his son, my 7x grandfather Silas in jail, 3 months and 1 year respectively. Obviously we eventually won, but it cost Capt. Samuel Robinson his life as he died of small pox before he could return to his dream and reality of living in Vermont.

I tell this brief story, of a much greater one, in a hope of finding the missing link in our line. It also reminds me of the many things our forefathers had to endure and therefore I share this story of just one of many families who did so much for America. Vermont was the first known territory to abolish slavery, we believe in the world, circ. 1770s. We have document signed by our Grandfather Silas Robinson, on a treaty with the Indian’s in that area which later was abrogated by the U.S. Government. Everyone of Capt. Samuels sons, including Silas, fought in the Revolution. The Armory for the Continental Army and the Green Mountain Boys was the Robinson barn that the Battle of Bennington was literally fought over. The northern British Army, with German Hessians, as mercenaries, had run out of munitions, needing arms and supplies to continue. They didn’t take the barn and the rest is history.

If anyone knows of the father of our William Robinson in the Boston area circa 1650, please let me know. It would complete an already good story.

My brother is the genealogist and is writing the story focusing on Capt. Samuel, because it is not well known outside Vermont historians.

    Happy Thanksgiving to all.

  6. LLS history is as fraudulent as the rest of his posts. He could not even get right the FACT that the English stole Manhattan from the Dutch,NOT the Indians. I will let others figure out the vast lies and half truths since they are so numerous that is not worth my time to answer all of them. My only question is why he is still allowed to post.

  7. I was an American who spent time in Berlin during the Soviet occupation of East Germany. We called this holiday: Tanks Giving.

  8. To luckylarry you need to go get a glass of ice cold milk and a couple of Mallomars! You’ll feel wonderful…Happy Thanksgiving!

  9. “We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.” ~Cynthia Ozick

How often do you pause to appreciate what you have in life?

When I was young, I sort of took things for granted. I believe many other kids did so, too. After all, we were young and we didn’t know what life could be like on the other side.

One thing we took for granted was education. In my country, it’s compulsory for all kids to go to school, so it was a given. We never thought about how lucky we were to be educated.

Another thing we took for granted was our teachers. We never thought about how lucky we were to have teachers who cared for our growth so much, and poured their heart and soul in their lessons.

Then slowly as I grew up, I began to appreciate things around me more. As I saw more and more of the world out there, I realized all the things I’d been given are not rights, but privileges.

I realized that being literate is a not a right, but a gift. I realized there is a lot of war and violence in the world, and I’m lucky to live in a country where it’s safe and peaceful. I realized there are people out there who don’t have their five senses, and to have mine is a gift.

I realized the world is so beautiful, and we’re lucky to live in such an amazing world.

Mespo, I share your thanks and you are the Prince of Civility.

  13. Up early to prep the turkey…Happy Thanksgiving to all of us here and your beloved families. I bet my stuffing is better then your stuffing..LOL!

Would love to hear why you are thankful? Like many this is the question asked at my table. I am thankful because a beloved friend Carla is winning her fight with cancer. And to quote Julia Child…save the giblets!
