We have yet another example of the perversity of justice under Sharia law. The latest case comes out of Iran where university students have filed a criminal complaint against famed actress Leila Hatami, who recently starred in the Oscar-winning film, A Separation. Some Iranians were outraged when Hatami accepted a customary peck on the cheek from Gilles Jacob, the President of Cannes Festival, as she arrived at Cannes Film Festival to serve as a member of the prestigious jury. Not only is such a sign of affection a crime in the Islamic Republic but (gasp) Hatami was wearing a head scarf that did not entirely cover her hair from being seen by men. She is now subject to jail and flogging under article 638 of Islamic Criminal Justice. The Sharia law calls for 50 lashes.
One would think that a nation like Iran would be overwhelmed with pride at the success of a citizen on the international stage. Hatami is one of just five women members on the Palme d’Or prize jury. However, in a country where women are segregated and flogged in the name of Islamic morality, many view Hatami with disgust and anger. That includes the Hizbullah Students, a group of university students with links to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard that first brought the criminal complaint. They are demanding that Hatami be flogged.
The petition, supported by many officials and citizens, declared “We, the undersigned, who are a group of student Muslim brothers and sisters, ask the cultural and media branch of the judiciary to prosecute Leyla Hatami for her sinful act of kissing a strange man in public, which according to article 638 of Islamic Criminal Justice carries a prison sentence. Furthermore, the action of this film star has hurt the religious sentiments of the proud and martyrs breeding nation of Iran and as such we also demand the punishment of flogging for her as stipulated in the law.”
Hatami has been denounced in the media as committing a “an affront to the chastity of women in Iran” and Hossein Nushabadi, Iran’s deputy minister of culture, declared Hatami to be in open “violation of religious beliefs.” He went on to say that she had disgraced the nation and the faith by such an immoral act and that, unlike Hatami, “Iranian woman is the symbol of chastity and innocence.” And of course Iranian courts are the symbol of cruelty and ignorance.

Feynman:
They have managed to get the UK to allow 85 Sharia Law councils, which determine family and financial disputes. They also perform polygamous marriages.
Nearly half of US Muslims polled want Sharia Law here in the US, and 12% want blasphemers to be hanged.
Moderate/reformed/modern (pick your adjective here) Muslims do NOT want Sharia Law, because they like a Western lifestyle. But Muslims who brought Old Country Values with them DO want it.

Po:
Sharia Law jurisprudence is based on the Qu’ran. In 100% of instances where Sharia Law is practiced, women fair very poorly. The are ZERO cases of Sharia Law allowing homosexuality, and women to have relations with a man outside of marriage. It universally gives men more free reign in that regard. So it might be interpreted that women can’t drive in Saudi Arabia, but then can in Iran, as long as there is no unrelated male in the car, but it all has similar themes.
Paul:
“Remember, CAIR is trying to get Sharia law included in American jurisprudence, let this be a lesson to all of us.”
SO TRUE! And they also tried to ban the mention of Islamic extremism and jihad from the 9/11 memorial!
Paul:
It is not a question of whether she broke Sharia Law. However, many Muslim women do not follow strict Sharia once they leave their country. Saudi women, for example, are often wearing couture, expensive makeup, and dripping with jewels under their veil. As soon as they land some take off the veil and relish freedom.
We punish our citizens who break our laws abroad, such as sexual tourism, a just law. The Iranians may punish her for breaking Sharia Law abroad, an unjust law.
This reminds me of an incident where Richard Gere caused a brouhaha when he kissed a Bollywood actress at the podium. He was mugging for the cameras, and only knew Bollywood is a genre of romance musicals. He had NO idea that it is taboo for the actors to kiss on film. Only in recent years have a few actors dared to do it, and it was big news. They usually touch foreheads or hug, instead.
Does anyone know if she has already returned to Iran? Is asylum here in the US or UK an option?
Help! Lost a post. Can someone please fish it out from the Vortex of Doom?

Absolute Truth is a redundancy.
Truth is “An Absolute” and has no use for an adjective like “absolute”.
What you are suggesting is that “Truth” exists separate from anyone’s understanding, approval, or discovery.
An independent entity; so to speak.
This makes sense because in the end; there can only be one truth among theories that disagree.
Everything else is fabricated fantasy. Wishes and dreams.
I don’t believe that; as you seem to suggest; there is one “Truth” that covers all, in the world you describe. There is a truth about this and a truth about that. one all encompassing “Truth” veritably reeks of “God”. Because according to the rules of that world, everything must be proven separately from all else and must be able to stand alone or it is not considered verifiable.
The “Scientific Method” requires that all things happen in a vacuum to prove that they actually exist before they qualify to be part of any multi-faceted experiment much less a successful one.
So; the concept of one; all encompassing “Truth” is not a scientific principle at all but a religious one because belief in an unprovable thing requires not education but Faith.
Now; if you wish to delve into the land of Faith or Religion then we must admit or accept the concept and existence of “God” at which point; upon some reflection; we will find that Truth = God because if you have absolute control and power; whatever you choose to be; is.
Of course if one accepts God as real then one will find that contrary to popular thought; there is a school which believes that Freedom is also equal to God.
That God believes more than anyone in the separation of Church and State, where one or both are not according to his rules and standards.
Could be though that you didn’t realize you were treading so close to that particular philosophical line.
Truth; God; Absolutes; Proofs; and Faith. What a tangled web of theory and unprovable facts?
Care for a Walnetto, Sir?
Perhaps I may be better able to respond to the question, “Is Dr. Harris serious?” than anyone else, perhaps because of being “Dr. Harris”?
“Yes!”
Sharia law punishes people for violating it. U.S. law punishes people for violating it. In that sense, both Sharia law and U.S. law operate similarly.
However, in both Sharia law and in U.S. law, the truth value of the implicitly explicit premise that people violate the law is given as a fact of truth.
I have come to find that the notion, common to both U.S. law and Sharia law, that people violate the law, is scientifically, biologically, and philosophically false.
A little set theory, with emphasis on sets that contain themselves as members…
If it is true that “there is no truth,” then the logical proposition, “there is no truth” is necessarily true, and there is truth. The logical proposition that there is no truth cannot be true; therefore, truth cannot not exist.
Likewise, if it is true that there is no absolute truth, then the logical proposition, “there is no absolute truth” is false, and there cannot not be absolute truth.
If there cannot not be truth and if there cannot not be absolute truth, is the existential question else than learning what is true and learning what is absolutely true?
That effort, in my view, belongs to the realm of natural philosophy, or, as it has been named more recently, the realm of science.
After what is false has been sufficiently accurately identified (which has yet to happen, methinks), what remains may be what is true and what is absolutely true?
A question for non-science-oriented post-modernists: “If it is wrong to learn what is wrong and if it is wrong to learn how to avoid wrongdoing, how can wrongs and wrongdoings ever cease?”
I hope people like Feynman recognise that “not out of the woods” is a darn long way from having fingers severed as a reminder to not type out bad things about the central government, or regarding a 7th Century religious leader.
No, don’t expect your type would.
Laser
I am sorry about your case. It must be a tough day for you.
Angryman,
You mean we are not talking about Eyelashes?
Mr Keebler,
I would suggest that; that is because you have never had Fifty lashes.
feynman (it would seem you are correct)
And, you are also spot on – that we aren’t out of the woods.
Today the Judge dismissed my entire case against Romney & gang;
which opens the doorway for much more mayhem & material adversity.
Warspite says:
Is Dr. Harris serious? In the US we have a distinction between Church & State. A real, meaningful distinction. We also have a distinction between the Military and Civil. A real, meaningful distinction.
_________________________________________
There are millions in this country and many legislators, governors, and Catholic prelates who disagree with your assertion that we have a distinction between Church & State. And lots (almost all?) of our local LEOs look a lot like the military.
We did have some great good luck with the founders. Can you name a half dozen that could repeat their accomplishments since 1900?
150 years ago (a long way from the Enlightenment) large segments of this country had slavery. Jim Crow was in effect until ……when?,,,,did it die in 1964? We have legislators in this country that know less that any Islamic scholar from 700 years ago. We have pastors with enormous congregations that are working on criminalizing homosexuality in Africa.
We are not out of the woods.
It’s unlikely any woman would dignify such a moronic statement.
(PAUL – be bvery, very quiet – heh, heh, heh, heh)
And maybe they will hunt silly rabbits;
because I pounced on you enough – already.
If not – Trix is not just for kids!
On my FB a guy holds up a sign stating;
“I’m for feminism;
because women can’t drive in Afghanistan”.
Then (one who went to PAUL’s school of women’s logic) chimes in and says;
“Come on U Idiot Mangina. Women aren’t ABLE to drive anywhere. They’re terrible drivers. It’s an issue with their ability, they endanger us all by being on the roads”
It started out – somewhat – okay. And I was thinking (as the yid that I am), Israeli women and men are both required to do 2 years in the military.
And – then
BAM!
Picture this PAUL,
About 1/2 dozen decent (brilliant strategists) women are currently (not on any “cycle” unified) – about to go “civil” upon drumming upon you.
May the force of mercy be with you.
I’m abandoning your ship!
Sheessshh!
Okay PAUL – you STEPPED into the abyss;
and I’m not going down with your ship!
WOW!
SHEESSSHHH!
Good point, Laser.
We don’t flog people. We just shoot them.
Here’s one for the injustice archives.
Woman calls police on 911 – who find a man backing up with garden shears.
Cops shoot/kill (probable mentally ill or intoxicated) guy;
because he was about to turn the corner onto public street.
Couldn’t they have just shot him in the leg?
